Fri night overflow JD Oct 30

I am still getting used to having all the games

Star-divide

I have been hanging out in the game treads of some other teams I like  Suns,Bulls,Kings and Magic. any body have a favorite or least favorite[hate is such a strong word] other blog site? This is a transparent attempt to come with enough verbage to get a new JD up. Also discuss any ideas we can come up with and implement our selves to improve the way things work  around here. Would a Sat. Fantasy players thread be worth a try? Is this 75 words?

For a second this pre-season I almost forgot how much of a G rudy is. Too bad him and Roy play the same position…… It would be interesting to see what rudy would do as a starter on another team.

What happened to the JD I created about my birthday and taking a hiatus?

I come back here like 10 minutes ago to check it out and see how things went today as a lurker instead of a poster, and the blasted thing isn’t even there. What’s up with that?

Okay, so that’s what occurs when I plan on taking a relaxing 30-day break. Well, if this is how things go down during my absence, I guess I’ll have to renege on my promise to let the season play out a bit before coming back for basketball talk. Yes, I do hear the massive amount of groans out there. It’s cool with me, though.

Anyway, my birthday was decent today. I got a bunch of gift cards — mostly to Fred Meyer’s, which’ll probably be used mostly to buy gasoline at the fill-up station — as well as some AK1984 approved long-sleeve plaid shirts.

Now, back to the issue at hand, I’m still curious as to what in the JD today led to its deletion. If it was my use of “retarded” to describe Nate McMillan’s offense, then I apologizing for offending anyone. I’ve got a special needs sister, however, so in my warped mind I feel I can use the word “retarded” as a slang term without it being offensive.

So, with that said, I apologize to both my 17-year-old sister and McMillan.

i think most people assumed you deleted it yourself.

that’s what I thought anyway. The deletion caused quite a stir. you can check the other JD if you feel like scrolling through it.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 30, 2009 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I did scroll through that one after noticing my was gone.

At first I thought that maybe I never posted the JD, because i was a bit hammered at the time late last night; however, that obviously wasn’t the case when I read through the midday JD. At any rate, I hope that somebody made a screen shot of it or something. It’d be cool to get a chance to read through it.

Nope, I'd just planned on taking a self-imposed break for a month.

Yet, I probably wouldn’t’ve lasted the full 30 days, which is ’cause I lack self-control and my willpower is next to nil.

That’d’ve been really odd to get banned over “retarded,” especially in light of some of the game thread craziness from last night. Though, I can see where some people would’ve assumed the whole “last straw” idea.

I’m 99.99% sure that I didn’t delete it myself, although I was pretty hungover this morning and may’ve done it and my alcohol-riddled mind forgot when I had woke up this afternoon. The likelihood of that is slim to none, though.

I don't get the joke

tevis seems to politely be saying that being so blatant about inappropriate word choice isn’t healthy for Blazers Edge…. why does that land him an insult? I don’t think it’s ok or funny and no amount of priviledge should be granted to someone constantly pushing the limits especially of late. It isn’t innapropriate to say Nigger or retarded. Especially when I’m not directing to anyone or any object, just pointing out why they are considered “bad” by the site .

Like every other conversation site on the planet we do not allow

obviously offensive comments based on race, orientation, religion, and the like. These subjects can be discussed from time to time but should not get anywhere near the bad taste line.

Cloudy's Bets of the Weekend

Miami (-6.5) at Wake Forest — this is a damn good Miami team playing a not so good Wake Forest team. I expect “the U” to be hungry after a tough loss to Clemson last week.

Oregon State (-9.5) vs. UCLA — I’ll take a hot Oregon State offense at home against a bad UCLA team any day of the week.

I’d stay away from USC-Oregon. But my hunch is that USC covers the 3 point spread. I don’t think Oregon is as good as everyone thinks, they have basically played the bottom half of the Pac-10 so far.

and purdue(who just beat ohio state, which was usc calling card win until ND,thought niether team is anything special), and keep in mind that they have crushed the bottom half of the pac 10. lastly cal is in the top half of the pac, they may not be in the top teir but they finish in the top half.

top 15 teams signature wins

florida: lsu by 10
bama: va tech, ole miss, and south carolina
texas: oklamhoma( a 3 loss team)
iowa: penn state
usc: ohio state(barely and they really aren’t good) and ND (good offense, not a great team)
tcu: byu
boise: oregon(who is appearantly overrated)
cincy: south florida and i guess oregon state(neither really signature wins)
lsu: georgia(not that impressive either)
oregon: utah(nothing impressive but just as good as the schools around them’s wins)
georgia tech: va tech
penn state: michigan?
va tech: miami
ok state: georgia?
pitt: south florida
judging off the keys wins by the teams around oregon, i would say they are appropriately ranked.

by cloudydays on Oct 30, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

ya it does

its gonna suck for boise if tcu wins out, then they could finish in the top 10 and not get into a bcs game. bama really is the only team that has an impressive resume, the rest is a mixed bag of good wins and bad loses, just like the year lsu won, the only difference is with florida and bama meeting in the sec championship most likely undefeated u could have a situation were both teams get put right back against each other in the title game(far fetched but if all the other teams finish with one of two loses and florida beats bama, bama could still get in with a more impressive resume)

I didn’t think we played all that bad, good effort, great boards, even made free throws.

We just couldn’t hit a bucket, I still say when you shoot 32% for the entire game, and lead almost the entire game, you’re doing some things right. We were leading when Roy and LMA basically had nothing.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

I hate Denver always grabbing the arm and making it look like we caused the foul. There good at it, and then complain when it goes against them.
Don’t think Denver forgot we tied them last year, they wanted this game.

Maybe!

Durant is an amazing scorer, but so bad at everything else. And everything else really matters.

Green isn’t very good at anything and can’t guard a position.

Westbrook I like.

They got a long way to go, I think. Despite the 2 wins. They were just so bad in every category last year, and their Green and Durant won’t improve on the areas they need to improve in that quickly.

They have zero good post players.

ROY >>>>>> Durant
Oden>>>>>> whoever they play at PF or C
LMA>>>>>>> whoever they play at PF or C
Martell >>>>> better than Thabo
Andre Miller >>>>> will struggle to keep up with Westbrook but is a much better playmaker and more experience.

And who do they have on the bench? Nick Collison, who I like. But nuthin’ else.

UofTOrange runs a good program and maintains a good sense of humor. Despite some testiness between dreamshakers and bedgers from last seasons playoffs the rivalry is good spirited.

On the other end of the spectrum is CanusHoopus… the cracker running that excuse is still snickering about his little BM slight on PTB fans. I have worse things to say about that guy but I’m saving ’em for game one vs the t-woofs.

The Celticsblog is decent as well… they probably still carry a grudge after RipCity went in their and gave the Bedge a bad rep. Oh well… that pompous LA team got beat handily tonight…. so it’s ALL good

Every SBNation blog has its own subculture.

The opposite of Blazersedge could be considered Lookout Landing, which condones swearing and bans all type of political discussion due to its divisiveness. Lookout Landing is also way heavier into advanced statistical metrics — although so is Blazersedge, albeit to a much lesser extent — thus, it’s essentially a group of guys who are like arrogant versions of jksnake99.

I just dropped Hasheem Thabest on our 20 team league

He didn’t even play tonight. I give up on my “I’ll just see if he gets some blocks” plan after only 2 games.

Picked up Boobie Gibson. He makes 3’s. I think I might need them now. With Delonte West out and likely going to have a weird year, Boobie will get those minutes. The season before last he made a grip of 3’s.

Go Mortimer.

by broyposse on Oct 30, 2009 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

i was debating on Curry or Tyreke but since both sucks at fg%, took a shot at getting 3pts…Evans did better today though…

I think Jennings will do well under the Buck’s system as oppose to the Euroleague he played in…

But it is early and reaching for Shaq looks like a bad mistake if he doesn’t get more rebounds

by broyposse on Oct 30, 2009 11:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Jennings did great today

I just imagined Skiles murdering him sooner rather than later, or taking every opportunity to “teach” him a lesson by benching him when he tries to show any flair or personality on the basketeering court.

by Mortimer on Oct 30, 2009 11:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Scott Skiles is one of many reasons I want to trade Travis Outlaw for Kurt Thomas.

The dynamic between Skiles and Outlaw could either be succesful — with Outlaw finally putting it all together — or, as I’d predict in this case, be an abject failure with “Trout” riding the pine for long stretches of games.

I am obligated to point out that blocks don't always equal good defense

Marcus Camby is a great example of this.

But yes, Oden is a better defender, especially once he stays out of foul trouble.

I think he likes it when Gasol is out

he gets to be a focal point on offense. And then forgets defense. He looked lost on defense. Nice touch around the hoop on the other end, however

not necessarily tempo. More style as in isolation vs. ball movement, perimeter based vs. feeding the post, etc. I find certain styles of basketball incredible to watch… I think we have the capacity to be a team that people are taken aback by… but I fear Nate will try to fit all the talent into his very strict system.

Yeah, I like a slow-paced offense that feeds the post rather than relies heavily on isos.

That’s why I keep going back to Jeff Van Gundy, who keeps the tempo low while managing to run an offense through both a pivot and a high-usage wing player. Van Gundy, moreover, emphasizes defense for real instead of espousing empty rehetoric, which is icing on the cake.

I see us feeding the post much more as Oden develops

Often running the offense through him in the long run.

I think he more than has the passing ability to pull it off. Just needs more experience to know when to do what. But he’s a great passer for how young and raw he is— better than Howard is even today.

Then Nate actually drew up some alleyoop plays.
But I agree, we do have the ability to set some people back this year.
And I don’t think we have to rely on any one approach, we have the tools to throw a lot of styles at teams.

Uncharacteristically ugly for all involved

I don’t expect it to last, everyone is uncharacteristically off with their game and flow and rhythm to my eyes.

We got a relatively easy schedule for November. Maybe even VERY easy. We could have beat Denver even playing as weak as we did and not learned a lesson for 20+ games. We needed to learn a lesson I think.

We need LMA to be strong.

We need Miller incorporated with the other best players. And that means not making him be The Blake when he’s playing with Roy. He isn’t Blake.

We need Oden and/or Joel to stay on the floor.

Our defense has been good, better than last year. Martell has really impressed on that end, and so has Oden. Our rebounding has remained a strength as well, obviously. We just ain’t hitting shots we normally hit and our offensive has NO flow to it— something that was such a strength last year.

I see lots of improvements, but that on court chemistry on offense is lacking. Fortunately, offense is usually the easier thing to fix, especially for a team with such talented offensive players like we got.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I know it won’t last. It’ll flow better eventually.

I guess I started thinking about this because we really deserved to lose last night. Our new 65 million dollar man was afraid of the opposing frontcourt, we played Juwan for nearly a quarter, and Andre Miiller took three triples.

I think we needed to learn a lesson. I’m not too bummed we lost, in all honesty.

Joel Przybilla isn't capable of playing the 4 on offense, except for his ability to ...

set hard picks up high for Brandon Roy or Andre Miller — or even Rudy Fernandez — to have an open lane for driving to the hoop. Unlike an actual 5/4 player such as Jeff Foster, Przybilla has hands of stone and can’t hit a jump shot to save his life. I, for one, dislike Greg Oden and Pryzbilla playing together under any circumstances.

I’m the only one in the league with TWO top 10 players from last year, and Kidd is giving me assists and steals but lacking elsewhere. I think he’ll be good for me though.

In the ESPN league, I snagged Martell for my homer pick.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Side note

I really really like Horford, though he had an up and down sophomore campaign. He deserved ROY over Durant, and would have gotten it if they ever ran a play for the kid. He basically averaged a double double off of garbage buckets.

He can dribble the ball in the open court, rebound and play defense; he is a beast. I think he’ll be really good.

He needs to be moved to PF though. He’s a natural beastly PF.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I am literally starting Chuck Hayes tomorrow night. It’s just too thin. Although, if Chuck proves to be a steal machine, he’s worth it.

I do like Horford. He plays with a lot of fluidity and grace for such a muscular dude. I like the way he moves. He’s a much better prospect than Griffin to my eyes.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Oct 31, 2009 1:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he will be quiet a bit better than Griffin

Both move pretty good, though Horford is taller/longer and more skilled— even though he isn’t that skilled really. Not yet.

Griffin as a SF will take some time, and he just isn’t a halfcourt player. He’ll be good, but I am pretty sure his lack of length and not knowing how to play defense will keep him from really helping a team to be good.

Horford plays tough, and just needs to be involved more. He can be so good.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:36 AM PDT up reply actions

If the Los Angeles Clippers move Blake Griffin to small forward, he'll become ...

an even more tragic version of Marcus Fizer. Playing Griffin at power forward is the only reasonable option, even though he’s got shortcomings with defense and size like Carlos Boozer.

I agree, it's a bad idea

He just doesn’t have a SF game.

What he is, is a running PF who moves really well, is nice and thick, and can finish with the best of them. He also rebounds very well (at least he did in college, and I expect it to remain).

He has to be a PF to be truly successful I’d say, BUT BUT BUT if he can adapt his game to be a physical SF, you can hide him on defense much easier. As long as he is a PF, his lack of defense will mean his team won’t likely be very good.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 2:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Blake Griffin's efficiency and rebounding -- especially on offense -- are ...

doomed to dip if he’s moved to the 3. On defense, however, Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby are a frontline that could somewhat mask 3s who drive by Griffin — particualrly Camby, which is due to his standout weakside help and defensive rebounding — down the wing or baseline to the hoop.

Dear Paul Allen:

Waive Patty Mills & sign Ime Udoka.

Sincerely,
AK1984

by AK1984 on Oct 31, 2009 2:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, which makes it an odd problem

On offense he’ll be best as a PF, but on defense you’ll want to hide him— but you can’t hide him as an interior defender which all PFs and Cs are.

It would take a weird lineup that would allow him to be hidden as the SF on defense, and remain the PF on offense, which means the SF on offense has to be able to be a good interior defender and guard PFs on defense.

I dunno who would be like that. Old Shawn Marion?

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 2:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe odd isn't the right word

Since there are a ton of undersized PFs who can’t guard the interior, or their own man…

To be truly effective, it’s a problem that’ll need figuring out— assuming Blake does prove to not be a good defender as expected. But you know what happens when you assume? You might be wrong.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 2:14 AM PDT up reply actions

You wouldn't need someone such as Shawn Marion, but rather ...

Rasheed Wallace. In a frontcourt with Wallace and Blake Griffin, a great help defender and shot blocker like Marcus Camby would add balance.

On Offense
C: Blake Griffin
PF: Marcus Camby
SF: Rasheed Wallace

On Defense
C: Rasheed Wallace
PF: Marcus Camby
SF: Blake Griffin

Wallace isn’t walking through that door, though, so Mike Dunleavy, Sr. can’t go back to the well with “Sheed” this time.

If you ever go to a Clips game

Notice the cold frosty silence when he is introduced

by southern oregon on Oct 31, 2009 2:14 AM PDT up reply actions

What bugged me

Is that the FIRE DUMBLEAVY chants started during the National Anthem.

Some kid is trying to sing, and FIRE DUMBLEAVY or DUMBLEAVY SUCKS echoes through the arena.

It’s kept up all game. They don’t treat him with silence, they treat him with boos and jeers and taunts.

It was a couple of years ago last time I was there

for a Clips game, maybe the native’s are getting restless

by southern oregon on Oct 31, 2009 2:21 AM PDT up reply actions

They are very restless

They hate Dunleavy, which as far as his coaching goes is likely unfair, but as far as his GMing go, I think there needs to be a change.

Of course the same problems franchise-wide will remain as long as Sterling is the owner. He is dumb and evil.

The jeers and taunts and chants about Dunleavy never stop, even when they are winning! They were beating us soundly and it never stopped.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 2:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Let's take our collective GM'ing crew at BE ...

to the downtrodden L.A. Clippers. If any owner within the NBA world is crazy enough to hire us goons, Donald Sterling is the guy.

All kidding aside, the Clippers should cave in to Bill Simmons’ inane desires by making him a NBA front office executive.

I’d revel in schadenfreude, as Simmons being an abject failure at his dream job would bring me immense pleasure.

George Karl and the Denver Nuggets would be perfect for him, as ...

Blake Griffin could just slide into the Kenyon Martin role rather smoothly.

Alas, Griffin is stuck with the Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling, and Mike Dunleavy, Sr.

two top ten players? That is impressive. I am happy with Nash and Arenas… I think they are both top 15 players this year. Lots assists, points, threes, and turnovers! Yay.

As long as Kidd, who was ranked 9 last year, gives me numbers in every cat like normal

He’ll be a top 10 player again.

Wade has been Wade of course.

Nene played awful against us, which hurt my score, and ya know what? I USUALLY take any player who is playing us out of the lineup because I don’t want to benefit from anyone hurting my Blazers.

Since I decided to not be that way this year, I left Nene in, and I really would have benefited if I hadn’t. He did nothing in the game.

Well maybe he rebounded well. I forget. He shot like a turd though.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:38 AM PDT up reply actions

wow I don't think I have anywhere near that much talent

Roy will be Roy this year, but aside from that do I really have anyone near the top 15?

My team’s strength is in numbers vs. having a couple dominant players…

by cloudydays on Oct 31, 2009 1:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Troy Murphy is normally top 20, and was top 15 last year I think.

I got dominant players AND strength in numbers, so eat it Cloudy. Hard.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:41 AM PDT up reply actions

McGee only played 47 seconds the first game

I was about to drop him, but just like I expected he got 2 blocks tonight, which will make me keep him.

I think he’ll keep doing that all year— a game where he literally gives me nothing in any category, and then a few blocks the next game, enticing me to keep him.

DeRozan has been good for steals and blocks, with a few. He’s been starting.

Bonner good for 3’s.

Haslem rebounded like I wanted, and nothing else.

Tyreke had a bad first game but a really nice game tonight.

AK47 been getting steals, blocks, boards, and assists like I hoped.

Nene will be better, and so will Kidd, and JR Smith ain’t back from suspension yet.

I am happy with my team. I think all got a chance to be top 100 except for McGee at this pace.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, Udonis won't be a top 100 player most likely

Because he ONLY gets some points (usually 10) and rebounds (usually 8 to 10).

Nuthin’ else.

What froze me

Was when I decided to just drop Thabest and say he wasn’t fun enough to keep around, picking a new player took me quite a while.

Then I saw Boobie, remembered that he’ll be getting minutes now (and saw he was averaging 24 minutes in the first 2 games), and the light went on.

After him though, man, there ain’t no FA’s to get.

Jamario has been dropped… Finley will get 3’s… but a bunch of nuthin left.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 2:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Conley was awful his first game, his second game he got 10 assists but turned the ball over like crazy. Who knows what his role will be when AI gets back.

Roy has been and will be Roy. I don’t think I have to worry about him.

Terrence Williams had a great first game (15-10), and an OK 2nd game. I have a feeling he will be on and off like that all year.

Murphy has had two straight double doubles, he will be fine.

Biedrins has been very underwhelming so far — he hasn’t had a double double yet.

Sheed has been my Bonner, except he actually contributes in blocks and sometimes boards.

Barbosa has scored and not done much else.

Krstic has been surprisingly good.

Lou Williams has been good as well, I wish he’d get more assists though.

Battier has done a good job getting steals and 3PM, which is really all I need from him.

I’m not sure what makes a player top 100, so I can’t really predict that…

oh I forgot about Ryan Anderson

He has been great (better than Bonner!) so far, but who knows what his role will be once Shard gets back.

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

by cloudydays on Oct 31, 2009 1:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Ryan Anderson fits better in that 4-outside/1-inside spread offense ...

than mid-range shooting specialist Brandon Bass, so he should get the backup minutes at the 4 behind Rashard Lewis.

To predict top100

I go by history, and what they do of course… the more stats the contribute to, the better.

Haslem won’t because he only gives ya 2 stats (3 counting nice FG%) consistently, and nuthin’ much else. If he gave me like a block a game or something it’d be different…

That’s why Murphy gets ranked so high every year. Good FG%, a ton of 3’s, a ton of rebounds, nice points, and then nothing else. But being elite in 3 categories makes him a top 15 fantasy player.

DeRozan will be a borderline top 100 guy if he keeps getting a steal and a block a game… being a rook, I have no idea if he can keep it up. He’s rebounded decent as well.

If they produce across a few stats, they’ll be top 100. And sometimes even if they just do 1 stat at an elite level (I remember Boobie being top 100 two seasons ago I think, just based on 3’s).

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:53 AM PDT up reply actions

huh

I suppose there is the potential for most of my team to be top 100…

it’s way to early to tell though

Except for Terrence Williams and Conley

Your entire team is top 100 as we speak.

Mine sure ain’t.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Nenad won't stay top 100

And Conley won’t stay so low.

Terrence will be up and down like you say. he’s a rook, and that sort of player right now anyways.

by Mortimer on Oct 31, 2009 1:58 AM PDT up reply actions

how bout that

T Will has a shot to make it if he produces in steals or assists.

nenad won’t stay in it for long IMO

I see that the Detroit Pistons started Ben Wallace tonight, as well as gave him plenty of minutes.

Yet, when your starting power soft forward is Charlie Villanueva, going with “Big Ben” isn’t a bad idea.

Ben Wallace playing 30 mins a night is surprising though.

The Pistons will not be good this year…

there are a bunch of bigs in the draft this year

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

by cloudydays on Oct 31, 2009 2:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Knowing Joe Dumars, he'll draft someone soft like Greg Monroe and stuff him in at center.

That’d be as if the Portland Trail Blazers played LaMarcus Aldridge extensively at center, which would be bad times for offensive efficiency, rebounding, and defense.

Martell and Rudy are playing well

When they get used to playing with Dre it is going to be fun to watch and win some games

by southern oregon on Oct 31, 2009 2:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I know Mello put up a lot of points,

but you gotta think he was wondering where did this guy came from. And it was physical out there, and not just between Mart & Mello. I think in a series Mello has a few nights where he gets frustrated with the tenacity Mart was bringing. But that Mello is a pure shooter.

Yeah, then there’s Rudy, I was liking what I saw there. It looks like the youngins have stepped up there game.
