2009-10-30 Junk Drawer: Pre-Halloween Conspiracy Theory Edition

Okay, what exactly happened to the previous JD for this day. Did AK destroy it? Or was there a rippin' flame war that got to be too hot for the mods? OR what???!!!??!!?!?

While we're on the subject, what are your current conspiracy theories? Anything we all really have to know that is being buried by the main stream media?

On another subject, what are everybody's plans for Halloween? I think there might be a game on. I'll check.

Maybe this theme has been done before in a JD. I don't know. Mainly I'm just posting it to find out what happened to the other JD and as a public service to the Bedge. You're welcome.

The last person to delete a JD people were still useing was T i R

What does that make AK? I know a mod didn’t delete it.

i was wondering what happened.

i thought i’d been abandoned.

AK isn’t a happy camper today, it seems. He’s getting revenge.

There was nothing wrong with what was going on in there

This is just like the last time a JD got deleted. I like AK a little less now, and he was really growing on me.

yeah. it was a tame JD so you're probably right about the mods not deleting it.

weird. I accidentally deleted a JD I’d made a while ago, but it was the next day. I don’t remember one disappearing right in the middle of a day though.

yeah i know.

i’m quite apprehensive about making JD’s now. not that I ever have a chance. By the time I get to work in the morning, there are sometimes already two that have come along.

I dunno, his "retarded" line might've been too much

NBF referred to it being more offensive than last night’s f-bombs in a comment on Ben’s main page post (that was zapped too).

Fine with me. I made a mean comment that had a typo in it. I hate it when I do that.

by Corvid on Oct 30, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

But the “retarded” could have easily been deleted. I don’t think the mods are into pissing off the JD. Some folks in here are vindictive.

yeah, you can still go to AK's profile and read his past posts.

but I think he got banned, not that it matters since he said he was leaving anyway. Perhaps he’ll be reinstated in a couple months like S4E was.

That's my gut reaction too

He’s been one straw away from breaking the camel’s back for a while now. Maybe his stuff was ok in the off-season, but now that the season has started and there are all sorts of new people, the powers that be were concerned about his style catching on. Bedge can handle one AK, but multiples and wannabes?

anytime you get LeBron, Melo, Kobe, Wade visibly frustrated and/or draw an offense foul when battling for position, you’re doing a great job defensively on them. Nothing’s gonna stop them from scoring though.

i have realized that Blazersedge

(the constant communal astmosphere and bball talk) make things 100 X worse than things really are.

Am I sad that the team lost ? Yeah because Im by nature very competetive, but freaking out and saying “nate should be fired” and ‘trade lma" or "lma is overpaid b/c he isn’t playing well right now" is just too much and not really a fun way for me to be a fan.

I realize that I was freaking out as recent as the 2nd to last pre season game saying “nate youre dead to me” . But I came to the realization of late that I just dont have the energy to freak out constantly over a loss because it spills over into my real and more important life.

also it’s safe to assume that people that actually get paid to coach at that level and fail, know more about basketball than anyone on here. and Nate hasn’t failed. I trust him.

I wasn’t stating that Nate deserves to be fired, that he has done a bad job, or that I know more than he does and just because he gets paid doesnt mean he’s automatically better. To me, dissembling the gendered leagues in all sports is more important than having a symbolic female coach of an NBA squad

At some levels perhaps

but there are clearly some HS girls who could play and be successful on the boys team. But I think that once you get to the college level (in basketball at least) the physical differences between the genders are too great to overcome and thus the separation makes sense.

by tingeyga on Oct 30, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It could happen. The game could evolve. It is possible that there would be females good at compensating for physical differences. If someone spent enough time studying techniques, I think it is possible. Basketball has some strength to it, but it is not 100% of the game.

im going to do the best cliff notes version of this

theory for you b/c i dont want to come off as abrasive or accusatory.

In our society, men are dominant , perceived to be more muscular, and better able to build muscle. This perception is in part constructed to maintain the dominant male construct. This is why sports are still considered, in essence to be male activities. In other cultures, women are considered muscular (uteris strongest muscle ) , dominant and the dominant gender, whereas men are passive and Play the westernized role of the ‘woman’.

FOr this reason, arguing that men are just more physically fit and should be kept seperate from women isn’t really valid (and its not just you saying this , most people assume this ) . We have to recognize that gender isn’t something inherant its “done”. Women are physically capable of playing basketball, and sports should not be such a heavily gendered institution.

This is my opinion of course but it’s based on some very valid theories that have been pretty w4ell proven by people much smarter than me.

Here’s the thing though—Our bodies are different, especially, in our hips and shoulders. Professional football, for example, would be very hard on a female body. Strengthened uteri, means that any sport involving those mechanics, would put men at a disadvantage—due to my low learning, I can’t provide you with the proper example of such a sport. I think the bottom line, is if tomorrow, you aligned the two sexes under one umbrella, you would have almost no female athletes—and I think this is really what’s at stack. You’re theory would sacrifice the entire female athletics for the sake of equality.

but there are are genetic differences between men and women… women are more prone to osteoporosis for instance than men… men have to worry about prostate cancer… I’m not saying that there aren’t women out there in the different sports that can play with the men… I just think that if you were to do away with the construct of gender and have combined leagues, you would have very few women compared to men that could compete… I think it would ultimately defeat your purpose by casting the professional athlete woman as the abnormality rather than the norm… as an example, let’s look at track and feild ( a sport where the women and men compete on equal footing in equal distances, just no against each other) men have faster times, farther/higher jumps and longer throws than the women… this isn’t due to a social construct

I agree with that. Whenever there was sprinting drills in school, you were supposed to run with someone, with the theory being that if you ran against someone, you’d run faster. If more girls played with the boys, I think they would eventually catch up and learn to adapt to perceived “differences”

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Oct 30, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So let me see if I understand your stance correctly

In short you think that if we took the top 10% of male athletes in a sport, lets say running, and compared them to the top 10% of female athletes that all of the differences between their performances are due to culture, and not due to physiological differences such as the males being taller (or some other structural physical difference)?

by tingeyga on Oct 30, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i am not contending that there are not differences

between female and male athletes, I am contending that these differences shouldn’t stipulate that men and women cannot compete against eachother.

Here is what I see as our differences in our views on this subject

(feel free to correct me if you feel misrepresented)

I think that when the physical differences between boys and girls are minimal that there is no reason why their leagues should be separate. But as they mature then it makes sense to separate them as the physical differences between the sexes widen.

You think that despite those physical differences that men and women should compete against each other.

If I understand you correctly, it seems that you would rather treat everyone equally than to treat everyone fairly.

It is a latin precept

Iustitia est constans et perpetua voluntas ius suum cuique tribuendi.

To treat equally is not the same as to be fair/just. To be equal is to give the same to all, to be just is to give each their due.

by fanfaraway on Oct 30, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

Bit of backgroud that I hope will explain a bit: My dad always tried harder to treat his kids fairly than he did to treat us equally. That is to say if my brother asked to borrow the car one night, then to be equal I should be able to borrow the car one night as well. But the fair view of it would also take into account if I even need to borrow a car, do my friends live within walking distance, etc. As another example my dad helped my brother buy a potters wheel when he was in college. Equality would demand that my dad also buy me a potters wheel. Fairness would say “You don’t need a potters wheel, but how about a laptop”. In other words I think that fairness takes a more nuanced view than strict equality.

from what I recall, it was a man who specifically had a sex change in order to try to get on the European women’s professional tour… it was not a case of someone who had gender identity issues, but a case where someone couldn’t compete with his peers and decided to try something else for a competitive edge

I don’t understand how you can separate those two—I think gender is an expression characteristics starting from sex, extending to one’s social role. I think this can be blurry and challenge, especially in the latter portion of it. But, I don’t think it’s constructed. I think too much relies upon the physical characteristics.

which example I’ve thrown out a couple… track and feild I think shows the differences between the sex’s… look at the South African Runner that unknowingly had male sex organs pumping her full of testosterone… she had a physical advantage over the other competitors… same thing goes for the golfer… because he/she had the benefit of testosterone in his/her system he/she had a physical advantage over the women he wanted to compete with… he could out-drive them… but golf is closer to a level playing field where sex is less of a difference maker than in other sports… Sorenstam proved that the top women can compete with the men

I don’t think so , but this is something you’ll have to decide. I would argue sports are a heavily gendered institution which not only discriminate against women but is sexist in that it perpetuates negative stereotypes and gender roles/norms.

I can agree to this in terms of discrimination, and especially in light of the history of sports.

Part of where I come, from, which i think you’ll disagree with, is that I don’t subscribe to equality in a lot of the ways we use it now. I think equality is often used as a noble principle to provide us with hope. That being said, I’m not really one to champion equality. As far as I can tell, there really isn’t much to be said of fairness, or justice.

it’s a great mystery to me, that for the most part, it takes me less than a fraction of a second, from varying distances to know if i’m looking at a lady. and then shortly there after, i discern if it’s an attractive lady or not. there is time when this mechanism, if i were to call it that, is off or unable to discern. but as to the why or the how, i don’t know…

Carmelo missed the two games where we played them on back to back nights, splitting a home and home.

Totally disagree this Blazer team looked worse than last year’s Blazer team.

It sucked we lost.
But we found out Martell is the Beast who we thought he are.
This game was like a playoff game. If last night, game 2 Blazer team played game 2 Blazer team from last year. This year’s team would have won by 20 points.
For one thing we need to play smart, I’ve seen so many balls slapped out of our hands in the last 2 games it’s ridiculous.
But how many times last year would we be shooting 32% and still leading on the scoreboard. Going on a limb here – But never.
If we play with the grittiness we had last night we are going to win a lot of games this year.

Denver didn’t have an off reb until 3:28 left in the 3rd. That alone almost won the game for us. If we knock down some shots last night, we blow Denver out of the water. Add 10% to our shooting percentage we still would have been below Denver’s Percentage, but that would give us 16-20 more points (some of those would be 3’s). Clean up the turnovers add another 5-7 points. We blow out Denver by 20.
There’s a lot of good to take away from this game – I’m very optimistic at this point.

My wife loves her job

I’d go nuts doing it. I’d have nightmares about Excel. In this economy, she stays really busy paying and not paying people. If I was an accountant, I think I’d want to work at a university and only work 40 hours a week. My wife normally works 60 hours a week. Sometimes 80 or more depending on the time of the month and if they are getting audited.

although college is not occupied by a mojority of women

institutions are still heavily gendered. I don’t mean to say "well all architects should be women ! " or even that all institutions should have equal numbers of men to women; but that the gendered instutions perpetuate long ingrained sexual and social stereotypes about the “role” men and women play within society. IE male = dominant women=submissive which is perpetuated by the fact that man women today are secretaries and assistants, and men occupy upper management positions.

I'd say it was at least 60/40 when I studied there (women/men)

and that is a conservative guess. Furthermore, it has the highest admittance grades, I think somewhere in the top 10 of hardest schools to get into of any discipline (not bragging, just to indicate that if that was the ratio in mine, it must have been similar or more favourable to women in less reputed schools)

by fanfaraway on Oct 30, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

mine was very hard to get into as well (so there!) it was based on anonymous portfolio submissions and test scores, so it wasn’t a bias among the admissions people or faculty… I do wonder if the US has more ingrained gender biases than Europe though based on our puritanical history

just ‘cos you didn’t put your name on yours doesn’t mean other didn’t!

It is the norm in Europe apparently:

Brussels, March 6 (EFE) .- The number of women studying has increased in recent years, mostly among college students of the European Union .

In 2006, women accounted for 55 per cent of students in higher education, compared with 53 percent from 1998, shown by data from Eurostat, the EU statistics office, reported on the occasion of International Women’s Day, next Sunday.

The presence of women in university classrooms is higher than men in all EU countries except Germany, where the ratio is virtually unchanged.

The EU countries with higher proportion of women in university classrooms are Latvia (63 percent), Estonia (62) and Lithuania and Sweden (60).

At the other end, along with Germany (49.7 percent), are Greece, Cyprus and Holland (51).

by DrivetheLane on Oct 30, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, Roy is better than Rudy. Roy should always be option 1 for the last shot, regardless of whose having the best game.

Rudy as option 2 is fine.

Rudy would have taken the last shot if they hadn’t called the dubious foul to put Oden on the line.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah i get that Roy is option 1.

but Denver knows that. Plus, in that situation, Denver probably also knows what inbounds play they’re gonna run (which looked pretty much the same as the “.9” shot last year) so they’re able to defend that better. I think in that situation, Roy would have been a great decoy.

Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it

by The Arkitect on Oct 30, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is, but there are some problems

A) He wants to bring the ball up court and distribute it. On the Blazers, that’s Roy at the end of games.

B) Because of his poor outside shooting, defenses that know him (George Karl certainly does) can sag off into a kind of 2-3 zone that makes it hard for him to shoot, pass to a better positioned player, or drive to the rim.

C) I’m sure there are more issues if you watch him long enough.

This was supposed to be an answer to a point Tom made that I agree with.

I said in one of the recap threads that Oden started bringing the ball down low again when he couldn’t get into a position from which he could immediately score. That had been better at the end of last season. They need to get him to either immediately pass the ball or start his move when players are closing in on him. That has to work instinctively. Don’t start backing your man down, that usually results in a turnover. After watching some big guys for years I can almost certainly say when they’ll turn over the ball, and such a situation is a very bad one to be in.

Also ROY needs to get better at this. Double team still throw him off more than they should.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

by Norsktroll on Oct 30, 2009 2:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think part of it will just come in a week or two for Oden

Pretty soon, he’ll stop thinking about what should I do, and he’ll just do it. It’s like when you spend a lot of time on something, like a skateboard trick or tying a cherry stem with your tongue, and then you screw up the first few times you do it for other people.

but the idea that they are quick enough to negate Outlaw’s advantage that he has against the likes of Landry (which is what Casey was saying) is laughable.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I mean. They've got good jumping ability.

They can be pretty speedy down court, but the quickness disparity between Outlaw and those two is just to big to ignore.

If K-Mart had Outlaw’s athleticism, he’d be back to a near 20/10 player.

Wow, I wonder what’s going to happen this season to make that change.

bedge is imploding! one bad game and we are all of a sudden not gonna be good anymore!

by Starvin' Marvin on Oct 30, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

pretty typical.

i remember this from last year too.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 30, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep.

just wait till the Blazers win on saturday and then we’ll be world champions for the next 5 years again.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 30, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think I imploded

I’ve been pretty consistent that I think the odds are below 50/50 this team ever wins a title, and it depends on Oden.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

experience.

that’s what I’m guessing he’d say. i don’t agree. it’s open now. just cause it’s not a good chance to win it all, doesn’t mean the window’s not open.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 30, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's just a bit of an exaggeration, isn't it?

Neither Boston, nor LA had two top 10 players, and they won titles.

Oden has to be a top 5 NBA center, but not top 10-15 overall.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

by LeafHawk on Oct 30, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll give you Garnett and Pierce.

Rondo played out of his mind in the playoffs, so I think that’s probably a wash.

But c’mon….Ray Allen is the definition of a one-dimensional player. He has little to no defensive ability. He just happened to fit the kind of scorer that the Celtics desperately needed. If he was on the Thunder, he wouldn’t get nearly the amount of respect he does.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

by LeafHawk on Oct 30, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Allen played really good defense in those playoffs, as did the whole team

But I could see the current LMA being better than 2-years-ago Allen. Its close.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess Portland could win one if Oden was only a top 5 C

For Portland to win multiple titles, he’d have to be a top 10-15 player.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think if the Blazers were to win a title, that would only boost Oden's confidence.

Pushing him up towards that level. I don’t know that he’s ever really going to be a top ten player in this league, but we’ll see. I don’t think he needs to be for Portland to win more than one.

I take it that you think Oden has to be the 2nd best player on the team for Portland to win a title?

Yes! Yes! In the face!

by LeafHawk on Oct 30, 2009 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, or alternatively KP needs to make a big move to bring someone who can be

LaMarcus Aldridge will never be a #2 guy on a title team, unless every single break (as far as opponents) went our way and guys like Rudy and Batum turned into top 50 players.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't necessarily agree with that.

But I do think Aldridge and Oden have to be #2 and 2a. Aldridge has the potential to be that #2 option, but he’s got to use his size more to his advantage. Unless you can shoot like Dirk, if you’re 6’11", you need to be involved in the interior more on the offensive side of the ball.

I don’t believe that LA is incapable of learning that. But he obviously hasn’t gotten there yet.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

by LeafHawk on Oct 30, 2009 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is now year 4 for Aldridge

He’s still doing the same things, with little noticeable improvement. I don’t think he’s going to get much better. He’s a good player— the 2nd half of last year he was quite good—, but chances are he’s not going to fully fulfill his potential.

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

a legit chance to win it all, yeah probably.

but i think there is an outside shot from now on, even if Oden doesn’t develop into a top 10-15 player.

lol, yes

I left out the word “overrates.”

by jksnake99 on Oct 30, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i figured. just wanted to make sure.

i think you’re right, by the way. experience needs to stop being a talking point for this team. it’s time to get it done or not get it done. there aren’t really any excuses anymore.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 30, 2009 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

thank you.

I wish more people agreed with me on that.

Kevin Durant even has more rebounds per game this season than Greg

We are so screwed :)

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

by Norsktroll on Oct 30, 2009 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can get with that at least.

I think you’ll find that a full, healthy (knock on wood) NBA season for Greg will show marked improvement by April. Both defensively and offensively.

I also think one of two things will happen. Either Nate will go with Miller as the #1 PG, which would help a lot. Or Miller will be traded for another asset which will fit into Nate’s system more. I’m actually hoping Nate embraces some of Miller’s qualities and changes his system just a bit. As long as the focal point of the offense is Roy, that should still be doable.

no, Norsk is a huge Ducks fan

I guess he won’t be watching the Blazers or Mavs that day :)

Norsk is German?

Shouldn’t he be Bavariantroll then?

I assumed that he was Nordish

Not that it really matters Norsk is pan-national (is that even a word), he is everywhere.

Here is my ode to the typical Blazersledge post loss apocalyptic over-reaction

This should be sung to the tune of The Long Run by The Eagles

Roy uses the Iso a lot,
We tend to worry a lot,
we always freak out till the break of day.
Man, that doesn’t get it,
I think it’s high time we quit it.
We just shouldn’t carry on this way.
Oh, It’ll do some damage, AK know’s it’s true.
Didn’t know It was so scary, but evidently it’s true.

But We can go the distance,
(and) We’ll find out, in the long run.
(in the long run)
All it takes is some persistance,
and our love (it’s a strong one)
(it’s a strong one)
Writers talkin’ about us,
they ain’t got nothin’ else to do
but when it all comes down we will
still come through.
In the long run.
Ooh, I want to tell you, it’s a long run.

You know I don’t understand, why you don’t
run the break better,
do the crazy things that you do.
‘Cause all the power forwards in Houston, baby,
couldn’t hold a candle to you.
Did you do it to Love?
Did you do it to Rony?
Did you take Kobe’s Sprite?
Did you think you think it was funny?

Who is gonna make it?
We’ll find out, in the long run.
(in the long run)
I know we can take it,
if our love, is a strong one.
(is a strong one)
Well, G.O.‘s scared, but he ain’t shakin’.
Kinda bent, but he ain’t breakin’.

In the long run,
Ooh, I want to tell you, it’s a long run.
In the long run, Ooh, ahh, ehh.
In the long run

Going to find out, f-f-f-f-find out.
Long Long Long Long, Long Long Long Long.
Ooh run run run baby, run run baby.
Long, long, long, long.
Ooh, ahh, ehh, ehh.

"And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make." -The Beatles
