So are these the replacement refs? With Poll.

You can blame the game on missed free throws or the horrible field goal percentage, and surely I would agree with you on most nights. Yet after watching last nights game as well as all the NBA nationally televised games I really can't tell the difference between the "real" refs and the hated replacement refs. Sure the refs have had a layoff and could be rusty, but 90 bleeping free throws between the two teams. Personally last nights game was in shambles because of the refs. I remember a sequence in the 4th quarter, the game was in it's final 3 minutes (2:00-3:00 is when this sequence happened) and there had to have been 6 consecutive trips down the floor that either team was called with a foul which resulted in free throws. Now what makes a game slow and stagnant? Fouls! The refs ruled the game, making calls just to hear their whistle hit it's high notes.

I was listening to my least favorite sports radio personality, Canzano, and he brought up the point that a third party company should oversee the refs and their on court performance. Well for probably the first time in my life I agree with the man. The refs need to let the game unfold without their whistles stopping play. This league is becoming a league in which if a player "acts" like they were fouled then they were, and if their name is Anthony, James, or even Roy they get the call. No blood, no foul! I cannot stand watching a game that has no rhythm because the refs interrupt it.

Should the refs be evaluated by a third party company which would hold them accountable while at the same time train them?

I disagree

that turn the game into a thug fest……however …I do agree that they called many ….many fouls when defending Melo and Billups where there was minimal to no contact at all. Why can’t refs just call the fouls they see….quit freakin’ anticipating

I thought the refs did a good job

There were just a lot of fouls. If Portland doesn’t want to send people to the line, they need to defend without fouling. At least the calls were even between both sides and were consistent. Sure there were a few bad calls but overall I thought the refs did a decent job.

Regarding your poll, I guess it doesn’t make much difference if there is a third party or if the refs monitor themselves. If there is a third party, who will monitor the third party if you get my drift. What matters is they are professionals who take their job seriously and have training and experience and know what they are doing.

So far, the refs seem a lot better so far this season in the games I have watched. I think the Donoghy thing has helped.

So because the players make a lot of fouls, the referees should not call them?

There are rules, they should be respected.
The rules are always evolving (and I don’t know if that’s a good thing). But the way they are called should not change.
Making the refs accountable sounds like a good idea though.

At least the calls were pretty consistent. I HATE it when they call the game this way.

I had a sinking feeling after Oden picked up his 3rd foul pretty quickly that we would lose this game. Oden had such a big impact on both sides of the court, that a ticky tack foul called game is almost always going to be bad for us.

We should be pretty damned good in the playoffs this year though.

Of course, refs should be handled by a third party

Unfortunately many NBA fans want a WWF type of product. That’s the sad fact.

If Can'tzano says it I am opposed

And no, there is no third party qualified to evaluate them imo.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
