Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Establish the Post!

I can't believe I'm saying this.  Charles Barkley is right!  During halftime, Barley again criticized the Blazers for being a "jump shooting" team.  The key point he made was, until Portland can establish the post to manufacture points easily, Portland can't be taken as a serious contender.

Now do I think Portland can make the Western Conference finals?  You bet.  I even they think they have a shot against the Lakers.  But that was during the preseason.  That was when Greg was getting touches in the post.  After the regular season started, the Blazers players and coaching staff are doing to Greg Oden, a potential beast on the block, what McMillan did to Sergio a year ago.  That is, "you miss a shot or make a mistake, and no more ball for you!"  I realize Chuck Hayes and Nene are good defenders, but they are both much smaller.  I realize both have good hands, but Greg needs experience in the trenches with guards and other players swiping at the ball.  He needs to learn how to hold on to the ball.  He needs to learn how to go his moves before the double team come.  But this has to happen with a concerted effort from the other players to get him the ball.

And what about Lamarcus Aldridge?  If Greg's not being established in the post, I understand.  This is because Lamarcus is in the post, dominating the paint, right?  Nope.  He took 14 shots tonight and almost every one of those shots were jumpers or fade-aways.  He even shot a high arcing rainbow fade-away jumper over Kenyon Martin (that was pretty nice...)

What I'm saying is, you've got to get one of these bigs (be it Lamarcus or Greg) in the post and just take it to the defense.  And when I say post I don't mean, having your back to the defender for a couple seconds and then turning around to shoot a jump shot.  I mean actually going to work.  Taking the ball right at the rim to the heart of the defense.  Why was Carmelo so succesful tonight?  He took it to the blazers in the paint.  And the dude is a small forward.  Imagine if our bigs (Lamarcus and Greg) could consistently establish the post.   Brandon, Martel, and all of our other guards could take less shots (and much easier shots) and we would be shooting at a much higher percentage.  That's the thing with "jump shooting" teams.  One night you're blazing hot, on another you're shooting 30%.  I love Brandon to death but the truth is, he takes us to the playoffs while Lamarcus's and Greg's polished post games take us to the championship ceremony.

Greg Greg Greg!

I have never seen anything like how as soon as he touches the ball, its whacked right out of his hand!!! I felt the same way you felt, Barkley, as much as I hate to admit it is right. Without a post scoring threat, we lack what we need to get to the top. Now its only game 2, and GO get the benefit of the doubt, but if this is going on come april, were in big trouble!! I dont understand why they dont have better trainers with GO. No offense to Bayno, but, cmon—either GO is better or hes not and so far offensively, hes not. I love GO, and I believe he will be great, but only time will tell.

LmA

is the one that troubles me. Why would a guy that tall take a turnaround fadeaway jumper? What is he fadeing away from, the threat of Purple Nurples ?He seems to hate contact on the offensive end. Also by this time in his career he should have learned at least a few of Tim Duncans moves.

I don’t think we need a trade. Someone just needs to tell LMA he’s not a shooting guard. Then everyone can play more natural positions.

Yup.

I think it’s Purple Nurples. It gets him everytime.

Barkley was right on

LMA isn’t a post player and may never be.

Oden is clumsy turnover machine and may never be anything else.

Prz can’t make anything but a dunk.

LMA and Oden have the potential but Greg seems unable and LMA seems unwilling. We’re not a title contender unless that changes by playoff time.

it took you guys until last night to realize this?

You needed Charles Barkley to tell you that LMA has no inside presence?

2 years ago the Blazers could have traded for Nene w/out giving up anything substantial (1st round pick plus LaFrentz). The Blazers did not because of faith in GO and LMA. I love LMA, and I think he is a fine player………………..if he were playing alongside Dwight Howard, 2001 Shaq, or 1992 Shawn Kemp.

GO on the other hand, I have just never seen it.

Only until last night to agree

Yes Chuck, you’re right. We have no inside game. Happy?

It's not that LMA doesn't have a post game...

He has one. We saw glimpses of it towards the end of last season and the Houston series. He just always settles for that outside jumper. LMA has the moves, just not the will. Somebody just needs to push the guy into the post and make him play there.

As far as GO, I see it. I see it very clearly. Despite the turnovers and clumsiness, there still lies a beast who cannot be stopped. During the game, the analysts were wondering why the nuggets were double teaming Oden each time he got the ball. He only averages 2 points per game. They didn’t even double team Boozer or Okur last night, much better players than Oden right?

Denver knows what happened in the preseason.

Once Greg backs a player down (aside from Shaq, he can back anybody down) there’s nothing to do but foul him. So yeah, I see the potential plus what he can already do now. They just need to get him the ball. Denver has Carmelo Anthony as their guy none can stop. I think GO can be that guy for Portland. He just needs experience.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
