Who has the best backcourt in the NBA this year?
So, obviously i cant wait for the start of the year and we have talked about allmost everything one could think of to talk about. But i was thinking about the new backcourt combo's this year and i wonder who will have the best backcourt this year.
This is MY criteria for this.....to qualify a team MUST have TWO players that are more than above average in skill. This eliminates the Kobe/ Fisher, Wade/ Chalmers type backcourts. This, to me is a tough call, all the top backcourts have there share of question marks but here is my try. Im curious to see how the poll will shake out.
1: Celtics, if Allen can still play his assassin style of stellar play and Rondo continues his outstanding play this to me would be the best backcourt in the nba, Ray-ray's age will be the big factor here.
2: Spurs, Parker and Ginobili? come on, Ginobilis health is a concern though and Parker has played alot this summer and it seems to have a negative effect on most players(Hedo, im looking at you) If they both stay healthy though they will be just as good as boston.
3: Magic, Nelson and Carter.....man. Carter does seem to have lost just a little bit of his insane game. I dont see him jumping over 7+ft bigmen anymore but he is still pretty dang good. If those two mesh well, lookout!
4: Blazers, Miller and Roy could be the best passing backcourt in recent memory. Its rare to have two players who can handle the ball, pass the ball, and play off the ball like Miller and Roy can. The question will be chemistry.
5: Hawks, Johnson and Bibby......this is a very tough duo also. Bibby's age is becoming a factor. Its seems like, from the outside looking in.....that Bibby is very much on the decline allthough i do not follow the Hawks closely at all.
This was a tough call to rank these teams, i allmost wanted to rank them 1, 1a, 1b, 4, 5, but that was my best effort. There are certainly a few backcourts out there that one could argue should be in the top 5......Golden State, Dallas, Phoenix, even OKC and Memphis could end up being top 5 type back courts but i think those teams are a step down from the five listed. Thats just my opinion though, lets see what you guys think and how the poll shakes out.

Im sorry guys
i cant make a poll with more than three choices, guess im not smart enough so i wont be including a poll since i cant think of how to create it with only three options.

no offense
but I think you might be underselling Chalmers going into his second season. That kid could very well be an above average PG, add that to Wade and you have a very dangerous duo.
ya hear ya
but its the could be’s and the might’s that made me leave them off. Talk to me next year and we’ll revisit the subject.

Really hard to judge
Miller + Roy is a maybe. We just don’t know yet.
I’m not seeing Atlanta as making this list.
But I also like:
LA Clippers: Baron Davis and Eric Gordon.
Washington: Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas, if healthy.
Butler is a 3
unless they decide to move him to 2 to start Mike Miller…but it’s more likely Miller starts at 2 because of better ballhandling and passing.
Ginobli at 100% sure
.75 Ginobli + Parker < Roy + Miller

82 Games
has a team production by position ranking at
http://www.82games.com/0809/BYPOSIT.HTM.
It is based on last year’s performance using positional net PER. These are the teams with both PG and SG ranked in to top half (15 or above):
Team PG/SG
Boston 4/4
Miami 8/1
New Jersey 6/8 (Carter gone)
Atlanta 14/6
Chicago 15/7 (Gordon gone)
Milwaukee 12/11
Utah 10/15
San Antonio was 2/16, but Manu was hurt. So you could move them onto the list.
Orlando was 7/26, and now they have Carter. So you could say 7/8 for them.
Portland was 16/3, just barely missing having both in the top 15. Philly was 3/19, and we now have their point guard. So you could argue that Portland is now 3/3, which would put us at the top of the list.
So you could rank them:
Portland 3/3
Boston 4/4
Miami 8/1
Orlando 7/8
San Antonio 2/?
Let’s look at the proposed backcourts using the Roland Ratings from http://www.82games.com/0809/ROLRTG8.HTM.
Celtics: Allen (8.4) and Rondo (5.6) = 14.0
Spurs: Parker (8.1) and Ginobili (6.6) = +14.7
Magic: Nelson (7.9) and Carter (3.3) = +11.2
Blazers: Roy (12.5) and Miller (4.3) = +16.8
Hawks: Johnson (6.1) and Bibby (0.0) = +6.1
The other one I added was:
Heat: Wade (+17.9) and Chambers (-0.9) = +17.0
Looking for others:
Lakers: Kobe (12.6) and Fisher (0.7) = 13.3
Hornets: Paul (17.7) and Peterson (-2.7) = 15.0
Denver: Smith (6.5) and Billups (+4.2) = +10.7
So if you rank all these, it goes like this:
Heat +17.0
Blazers +16.8
Hornets +15.0
Spurs +14.7
Celtics +14.0
Lakers + 13.3
Magic +11.2
Denver +10.7
This would lead to the top backcourts being Miami, Portland, New Orleans, San Antonio, Boston, and the Lakers.

I think that by the end of this season
we’re going to be referring to KP as a genius again for landing us Andre Miller! We’re going to see some solid blazer improvement across the board and a large chunk of that is going to be Andre Miller related!
Roy n Miller
Miller is a veteran who can still perfrom on a high level. He makes good decision in open court and you can’t play him with the “Rondo defense” he will hit the shot. His experience should benefit Porland greatly as apposed to steve blake erratic play. We all know what Roy is capable of so Blazer’s posses the best backcourt
I chose the Boston Celtics, as my Ray Allen homerism tipped the scale in this decision-making process.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
Someone once said
“Homerism is a disease that must be cured.”
I forget who. :)
As author of Da BOM (Blazer Optimist Manifesto), I hereby certify that we will win 62 games in the regular season. Disagree at your peril.
