I pose an honest question to Blazer fans.....
I'm not being sarcastic, nor am attempting to instigate a brutal and offensive argument. But why do the Blazer fans hate the Lakers so much?
I can see obvious reasons (Kobe, western conference foes, the 2000 WCF). But I have a friend from college who's going to the University of Portland to become a dentist, and he wears his Laker gear proudly. Man, the stuff he tells me about how Portland absolutely hates the Lakers is pretty odd to me. Laker haters in Boston, that I can understand. But he tells me they absolutely loathe when the Lakers come into town, and can't wait for them to stomp on the purple and gold.
I'm honestly curious, as a big time Laker fan, why do you all hate them as much as you do? Of course, I'm going straight off of what my good friend has told me, but I can feel it when I watch the games in Portland. The fans hate the Lakers.
Don't get me wrong. I give mad props to Roy, Aldridge, Outlaw and Pryzbilla. Think those guys are gonna be really good someday. I just don't see why there's so much hate out of Portland. fill me in....

Part of it is history... the Lakers have stopped very good Blazer teams in the playoffs...
Part of it is LA as a city and culture being SO very different than Portland.
People in LA, from my experience, tend to think that anyone who doesn’t live in LA should be pitied. Portlanders obviously think their city is fantastic, but I don’t see pity from residents for those who don’t live here. It comes across as a ridiculously arrogant position, that at the very least rubs me the wrong way.
I was born in LA, and lived there for a while. You could not PAY me to live there again. I just hate the city, everything about it. That someone pities that I don’t live there when I’m perfectly happy where I live irks me a tad.
I guess a aprt of it could be the sense of entitlement Laker fans seem to eminate too. Like it’s not really that they’re blessed to have good teams, but that it’s just what they deserve. Again, it comes across as arrogant.
Some of those reasons are why fans of other teams hate Portland fans.
But I agree, lots of history of the Lakers ruining Portland. My hate started in the 1991 WCF. After that, it was just looking for reasons to hate them.
That, and success breeds hatred. The Lakers have been pretty good for quite a while, and it’s tough to get a lot sympathy from those who are always rooting for the underdog, as is American tradition. People have started hating the Spurs for the same reason. And, if all goes well, the same will happen to the Blazers.
But obnoxious fans that really irk those who follow their teams closely. And Portland has their fair share as well.

It’s mostly their arrogant, belittling, fairweather fans who think Kobe is better than Jordan.

the 2000 WCF
I was 9 at the time, and we were celebrating the return of my cousin from a missionary trip to Africa, and my family and I were eating at a buffet.
they waiters (I use that loosely, I mean, it was a buffet) were watching the game in the kitchen, and kept coming in to tell us how the game was going. we were just beginning to eat, "hey, the Blazers are up by 15’
“12 point lead”
“down to 8”
“Its a 3 point game”
I was getting some macaroni and cheese, the waiter notices me and tells the Blazers are loosing.

Why does much of the country hate the Yankees?
There are many instances of suspected manipulation by the league to keep the big market teams such as the L@kers coming back to the finals every year. There are several teams in the East that qualify but only LA is big market in the West. The years that the finals have not featured LAL, NY, Chicago or Boston have been stinkers for TV ratings so there is economic sense in favoring LAL if they do.
Tell me if having 17 of the first 21 games at home to start the season is not favoring them?
Tell me if allowing the LAL to talk Magic Johnson into leaving school a year early (back then at least 3 years was near universal) when they had the 1st pick is not favoring them?
Whether there is actual manipulation I do not know. But the apprearance of manipulation is a common theme down through the years. Both NY and LAL have tremendous advantage in revenue stream. Should the league adopt revenue sharing and a hard cap, ala the NFL, the opportunity for other teams would be more equal. As it is there are teams such as Memphis who give All-Star players to LAL for chump change because they cannot afford them. That is not the fault of LAL. It is the fault of a commissioner who sees himself as a revenue builder rather than an arbiter of fairness.
And Yes, the arrogance of fans is sad. Those same fans have likely have never been to a live L@kers game but somehow see themselves as superior to other fans because they have chosen so wisely a proven winner. That arrogance is rubbing it in at every opportunity from the national chat boards to the flaunting of gear in an opposing city (not including the actual games played with LAL there).
Finally the central fact that to win a championship in Portland we have to beat the L@kets. Other teams come and go but this team is always a potential roadblock. Just some thoughts to respond to your question. I personally do not hate anybody. But I get the most satisfaction over beating LAL.
"Either way we have two phenomenal units. I'm excited to play with either one." - Martell Webster
......................... or is it a plot to wipe them out by stacking all their hard games towards the end? Hmmmmm??????
Tell me if having 17 of the first 21 games at home to start the season is not favoring them?

I think the question has been answered
I’m not so sure about your friend, though. I hope he doesn’t plan on becoming a dentist at U of P. They don’t have a school of dentistry.
But seriously, isn’t there a team you hate? There is one such team in Portland, and they are called the Lakers.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
somewhere in Portland
Sorry to offend the area if I don’t know the exact name of the university. I just know he’s in Portland.
But I guess i can understand. I’m actually from Orange County (which may or may not help with the whole “arrogant” fan base thing), but I hate L.A. too. I’m just a Laker fan. Have been ever since I was 5 and watched Magic win his championships.
I hate driving in L.A. It’s the worst. But don’t be mistaken. There are true basketball fans that like the Lakers. People who actually love basketball and love the Lakers for same reasons a smaller market fan base would love their team.
I will say that since the Lakers haven’t won a regular season game in Portland for like 7 years, I’ve been hating the Blazers. Respect them, but hate them too. When Trevor Ariza knocked Fernandez down, and it was called a flagrant, I was pretty upset. Thought it was an accident. But I think in the next coming years there will be some good playoff battles between our teams.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
Similar to the Boston / NY rivalry in baseball...
The Lakers are sorta like the Catholic Church and the Blazers are a half-wack new age religious cult and there’s a lot of self-assurance verging on arrogance on the one hand vs. insecurity and group-think on the other…
I’ve always said that once the Laker fans start returning the Blazer fans’ hate, all will be right with the universe.

Nobody says fandom requires logic and reason
I hate the L*kers because a) they’ve ruined a lot of Blazer dreams, b) I’m sick of them, c) it’s fun!
Just lots of bad memories caused by the Lakers...

and I just hate Shaq (still think of him as a Laker) and Kobe

First off, we don't mention, spell or speak that . . .
team name in Blazermania circles.
Reason for hatred !
1. Arrogance
2. Buying Free Agents for BIG $$$ (ie. like the Yankees)
3. The city is the armpit of the West Coast.
4. Smog
5. Hollywood elite know nothings
6. Refs give them all the calls (ie, NBA league conspiracy)
7. Blobe the rapist
8. The ZENminor & his stupid Throne
9. The current team is THUGGish. (Low Odom & Ariza in past years)
10. 2000 WCF & the ref calls – Favoritism
11. Hated “Blowtime”
12. Lew’s stupid googles
13. Did I already list “Arrogance” ?
14. Little punks moving to Southern Oregon that know nothing about
the game, wearing that pathetic gear.
15. The Jerseys.
16. They didn’t stay in Minneapolis.
17. Yellow & COINCAST both _ _ _ _ !
18. Jamaal Wilkes UGLY shot !
19. “Tragic” Johnson
20. Just the fact that I had to list reasons. Most Blazermaniacs don’t even
want to acknowledge that they exist. Please GO AWAY !!
It's GO time !

Culture Clash
The Portland culture and the Los Angeles culture are very, very different. Not that there aren’t cultures with a larger disparity, but we’re also geographically close.
“Keep Portland Weird”
vs.
High percentage of cosmetic surgery to make people look the same
I won’t even go so far as to say LA is all about appearance, but taking drastic steps to change your appearance to fit “the mold” is an acceptable and relatively common practice. In Portland the common view is that people shouldn’t be made to feel like they need to be something by someone else. Everyone has a right to be weird.
Liking being a small city
vs.
Pride in being a huge city
Most of us who live here like the slower pace. This is where our real love of the rain comes into play. Rain keeps people from coming here and changing our city to fit their taste. That’s one of the reasons why there is a subtle anti-Californian vibe here. There are a lot of Californians who decide to move up here because housing is so much cheaper and immediately set about “helping” our city become a rainy version of where they came from. We find the concept insulting.
Some insecurity about international ignorance
vs.
Comfort in being internationally recognized
The first time I told my friends in England I was from Oregon, I got blank looks. It took me explaining to them that there is a state in between Washington and California. Los Angeles does not have this problem. Cab drivers in Thailand can say Hollywood with a decent American accent. This notoriety is part of the source of LA’s perceived patronizing tone toward Portland. Its not really their fault, but as a culture there is no sense that anyone is trying to prevent it. When we show emotional content in a basketball game based on years of team rivalry and Laker fans respond with “Why all the hate?”, it only emphasizes how insignificant our beloved culture is in the eyes of the City of Angels. Its our choice whether or not to take offense and many of us have. As long as these things stay true, you’ll just have to deal with that.

The Lakers always get the benefit of all calls.
Every time a report of fraud games by refs come up, the Lakers by far have the most games in their favor. You dont really see any of these instances go against the Lakers. They are all huge championship stryle games. Some of those are at the expense of the Blazers.
Most Laker fans are extremely arrogant/smug and talk crap when their team is the poster child for the fake mafia style NBA. This is especially annoying when Laker fans dont talk crap in good fun, they go at your soul. The combonation of unfair advantage/unacknowledgement by outright malicious fans is a tough one to swallow.
Another reason is Kobe. Many things about Kobe annoy me. He’s been fake since the first time he announced he was going to the NBA in HS. His fake posturing. I am not sayign he is not a great player, but yet another situation where he gets all the calls.
It’s OK though…much like a college team who eventually gets busted for illegal recruiting, the Lakers will have their day. The officiating will eventually get looked at. The Pau situation and the Ron-Ron seeking out the Lakers and magically getting kicked out of the 7 game series twice last year will all come back and bite the abnoxious Laker fans in the ass.
Also whenever you see an article regarding ref fraud, Lakers fans are the staunchest deniers.
To sum up, fake franchise, fake fans, fake players, lots of malicious ish talking.
Land Rondo.

Rick Fox, his beard, Kobe, Kobe's little "thing" in Denver
And when i say little “thing in Denver” i really do mean it. Ruben Patterson was on the Blazers and he had a similar “thing” and i hated him too even though he was a Blazer. Kobe wasn’t ever convicted like Patterson but where there’s smoke there’s fire usually. So more of a reason to hate him.
Shaq too, and Phil Jackson because of coaching the Bulls team that beat the Blazers in the finals then coming to L.A. and doing it again in the WCF… while we had Pippen, who I also hated because he was a Bull back in the day.
I’m full of hate. Especially for Kobe and Shaq.
Portland fans want good players that are also good people, and with Kobe cheating on his wife, if not worse than that, and Shaq bad-mouthing every team he’s been on once he gets traded, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Damn the Blazers. Damn them to hell. - 'The Sports Guy' Bill Simmons

You either understand...
…or you don’t. For some of us this rivalry goes way back before the 2000 WCF.
There are numerous reasons I don’t like The L*kers but if I had to pick one? As long as I can remember it seems they have had talent given or fall into their lap. The League should of investigated the Gasol “trade” and then Artest just decides to leave Houston and play for far less money with The L*kers.
Couple that with the arrogance, how could I like them?
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
The Lakers
got their championships handed to them by other stupid franchises. Milwaukee traded them Jabbar in 1975 for peanuts. The Jazz gave them a #1 pick in 1976 for Gail Goodrich(who wasn’t worth it at the time), and the pick turned out to be Magic Johnson three years later. Then, to top it off, the Cavs traded them their #1 pick in 1982, which turns out to be James Worthy, and that was coming off of their second championship in three years.
Then, came the 00’s. With Showtime, I didn’t like that team, but I respected them and thought that they were pretty good. I didn’t think that the 00-02 Flukers were that good. Portland gave Game 7 to them in 00, they played a bunch of messed-up teams to get to and win the finals in 01, and the officials handed them the Kings series in 02. I wonder if the NBA fixes it for them.
So I've been hearing different and same things
Understand the arrogance. Again, I’m not from L.A. I’m from a city called Fullerton, right next to Anaheim. There’s no basketball team around us, so obviously we all root for the Lakers. And I’ve been a die hard Laker fan since I was very young.
I understand the battles. 91 WCF and 2000 WCF. I still hate Sabonis, Rasheed and Pippen. HATE THEM! But I still respect them.
But here’s the thing about smaller market fan bases: people in those areas assume that ALL Laker fans are rich, arrogant, drive a BMW, get botox, etc. That’s just not true. THERE REALLY ARE TRUE BBALL FANS! I here it all the time, especially from Sacramento fans. Don’t watch entourage and assume that’s what it’s all like in So Cal. Don’t watch the Hills and think all the girls are like that.
There are good people here, good people who love basketball first and foremost. We’re proud Laker fans. I’m sorry we get good draft picks, or spend money on free agents. I don’t think we get calls our way all the time, but if that’s how you guys feel, I can’t stop you from thinking that way.
But I learned a lot, so thank you.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
Oh wow... I was born down there in Fullerton.

Yeah there may be cool lacker fans but it doesn't matter
The blazers were knocked out year after year after year… and frankly it’s just FUN to hate the lackers.
The favortism by refs makes it a lot easier as well.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-39-135/On-Playoff-Experience.html
"I told Pau the Lakers never win here in Portland; I think it's great." -- Rudy Fernandez
It's not about the fans for me
If you really like basketball, and you live in so cal, you’re probably gonna like the Lakers (being a Clippers fan is far too masochistic). I’m fine with that.
It’s how the team is marketed and used as kind of flashy lure to draw in people that aren’t big basketball fans. In Beijing, for example, every Chinese person knew Kobe because he is the face of the NBA.
Most Portlanders don’t like having mass produced anything shoved down our throat. I know, our Blazers are still part of the NBA money machine. But I love it when I hear people complain that Nate McMillan’s style is too slow, or that Roy isn’t a superstar because he doesn’t score. We like our team to be different, and the underdog, taking on those LA superstars.
Hating LA is so-o-o-o easy! And fun - here's a primer...
Born in Boston, hating the Fakers and Yank-mes is a birth right, and a tradition passed down from generation to generation. Why? Similar reasons, and they apply to Portland’s hatred of LA too:
Top 10 reasons to hate the Fakers:
1) Arrogant (and I mean, REALLY arrogant) fans (at least every single one I’ve ever met)
2) A sense of entitlement (the championship should be ours)
3) Lots of $$ to spend trying to buy a championship
4) Weather. After 5 months of rain, I hate LA’s sun. (This isn’t true of most Portlanders, who, for some unknown reason, seem to actually LIKE rain… I don’t get that at all… but my son – native Oregonian – loves the rain, too, so it must be something in the water…
5) Did I say arrogant?
6) A bit of jealousy over their historical success.
7) David v. Goliath
8) Kobe the Rapist. (Is there an easier person to hate than this smug, obnoxious scumbag?)
9) Phil Jackson (no talent bum who can only win with the best player in the league – and yes, I hate him ever more now that he’s passed Boston icon Red in number of championships. Again, a smug, condescending obnoxious SOB)
10) Fans so obnoxious you think very mean thoughts in their general direction..
What do I like about LA?…. Beautiful women… That is the ONLY thing I can think of… And even they are hateable fake and plastic Hollywood wannabees…
Does that help?
Yea, you could say that helps
But I want to be an ambassodor for the good, true Laker fans. They exist, they really do. I know, you see the celebs at the games, the flashy marketing for the team, Kobe’s off-court headlines, the money they poor out. All good reasons to be a hater.
But there are good people who are true Laker fans. Believe me, there are us out here in So Cal who are true basketball fans. There are way too many misconceptions about people in Southern California. I’m sorry we have beautiful weather, beautiful women, and a team that has won a lot. But I truly respect the team in Portland. 1, they are the only professional franchise in the state and I think that’s awesome. I’ve been there and I like how green everything is. But there are places like that in Orange County (cities like Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Villa Park, Orange). The cities you never hear of. All people ever hear are Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, Newport Harbor.
But for us real people, we love the Lakers, and we don’t have fake boobs, fake faces or tummy tucks. We are true basketball fans. And we love the Lakers. I’ll tell you this, I am deathly afraid of meeting the Blazers in the post season. They’ve had our number in the regular season at your home games. I hate your team, and believe me when I say that’s a compliment.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
Good!
I am deathly afraid of meeting the Blazers in the post season
You should be!
3 reasons
1) They are the Yankees/ Cowboys/ Dukies of the NBA
2) Californian transplants
3) Sasha’s hair
Two points scored by GO’ = "thunderdunk"
I think above posters are kidding themselves when they say it's due to the contrast of the cities, about the culture and lifestyle differences between the two cities.
You don’t see us harboring the same hatred toward the Clippers ( also from LA ), or the Knicks or the 76ers ( both from HUGE cities ). It is a basketball and fan base hatred.
1. The Lakers have stomped some really good Blazer teams that probably would have won the championship had we not lost to LA ( 1991 WCF and 2000 WCF respectively ).
2. Laker fans are EVERYWHERE. I have known so many Laker fans who have never lived in LA, have no family in LA, and don’t ever plan on living there, that don’t follow basketball or even really understand the game, don’t care what any other teams are doing, and don’t have any plans to follow the sport. Yet they proudly wear their Kobe jersey and will tell you your team sucks, your team will always suck, they will never be as good as the Lakers, the Lakers will always be the best team, blah blah blah. I’m not saying all Laker fans are this way, I have a few friends who are true Laker fans, grew up in the area watching Magic and Bird finals, and love the game. But the other type of Laker fan is unbearable to be around when the subject of basket ball comes up.
3. The Lakers have been pretty good to really good to absolutely dominant for the past umpteen years now. Success breed hatred.
4. Kobe is a jerk.
5. Phil Jackson is a jerk.
It adds fuel to the fire...
Not exclusive to Portland/Oregon either. People in Montana hate people from California because they visit, love it, buy a house, live through one winter, hate it, and move back to California. In the process they drive up the cost of living for those who are born and bred there. At least that is the perception…
And if they had any team that played any team from LA I am sure they would hate that team and especially hate losing to that team.
