I've always felt that a Center with 5 fouls is useless as a defender, because they no longer contest shots, which is what the position is all about...

So conserving Oden for the last 6 minutes is fine.

Eh. I really don't like Ray Romano

But I get why he’d still want to be in the game. It’s what he enjoys doing, and there’s a demand for him.

It’s not demand from me, but it’s there somewhere. Unless the show tanks, then he knows it’s time to pack it up.

by Timmay! on Oct 29, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

But not on a TNT sitcom

One of the biggest sitcom stars in history couldn’t get a network show? I guess not but it seems ridiculous

by KP Corleone on Oct 29, 2009 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

He's a bit of a one-trick pony

And he’s never really had successful movies.

I actually prefer that new Brad Garrett 7-up commercial over any episode of Romano’s show. Man, that show was awful.

by Timmay! on Oct 29, 2009 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Why ray romano ever had a tv show is beyond me.

I had a feeling this would happen heading into this season.

Nate McMillan doesn’t know how to coach pivotmen, which is why Jeff Van Gundy is my favorite coaching in waiting out there.

I like Mike Fratello, too, but that’s just a pipe dream. Besides, Van Gundy is a more apt pick-and-roll and back-to-the-basket coach — with the latter being what should indeed be Greg Oden’s forte, because he’d dominate down on the low block — as well as more likely to return to the sidelines from the booth.

Rudy will have a new TV show soon

It’s called “Everybody Loves Rudy”

It’s about this European guy. Early in the episode, everyone gets angry because he’s messed up. But later in the episode, something goes well, and everyone loves him again.

It will be followed in the future by his second show, “Players of a Certain Age”. A middle ages Rudy, Sergio and Gasol will contemplate life after basketball, while everyone swoons over Rudy.

This is where my head is as well

LMA needs to play his game, not the opponent. Denver is in his head. Nate’s rotations, well, there’s nothing left to be said.

GO is my guy, but he’s not blameless. He needs to hit at least one of two there. Of course, it is somewhat difficult to come in virtually cold in the 4th because you’re coach has a complex about fouls, but that isn’t changing anytime soon, so GO needs to adapt.

Well, that was a bad loss. And richly deserved.

Nate needs to start figuring his guys out,

Oden HAS NEVER, EVER, EVER been clutch in the regular season.

He blew a rebound and choked two FTs and that’s all she wrote.

I don’t blame this on Oden. That was a really weird call on Kenyon Martin, and Oden wasn’t going to get the ball in that play either way.

As I see it, Andre Miller, Roy, and Aldridge all should be quality FT shooters. They’re the ones that are expected to hit em.

Its more complicated than that.

Thats a cop out. You just broke down a 48-minute slugfest into one sentence. “Denver is great, Portland isnt” doesn’t begin to describe the game that just ended.

The Lakers are a great team. Even they lost close games last year. Denver didn’t just win because they are “great” and we are just “good”.

by StuckeyDuck on Oct 29, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not saying Portland is bad and Denver is great. Note the “good” in the comment you replied to.

This is a one-game assessment. TONIGHT denver was clutch and portland played like an inexperienced team.

Will we win close games? Sure. BUT DENVER STOLE THIS ONE. They were the better, more experienced, MORE CLUTCH team tonight. How you could argue otherwise is beyond me.

When did I claim that the Blazers were clutch this game?

I’m just saying that they’re typically clutch. Yes, some Blazers choked because of some missed FTs at the end. I’m sure MANY other teams have gone through the same doom and gloom after we stole their games as well.

I’m not saying anything in the long term. I’m talking about tonight. Tonight I saw a more experienced team take a game away from a team that look lost at times in the endgame. I am simply saying, yes, this game, alone, can stand at proof, synchronically, that at this particular moment, the nuggets are farther along than the blazers.

We’ll see what’s what the next time we play the nuggets.

But for now: nugs clutch, ’zers choke.

One of the problems was bringing out Oden after his 5th

I don’t get it. Break up his rhythm (whatever of it there was) by bringing in another guy, who guess what has 5 fouls too!

that was an odd decision

I can't know what he was thinking but maybe it was to save him for end of the game situations

not free throws obviously, but such as the key offensive rebound he got late. I think it was appropriate and nearly paid off

and yet come that close to winning, its a sign that your doing something right (well, not shooting, obviously)

Why was Rudy rolling to the basket in the last play?

We didn’t need a layup/oop, we needed a 3.

The line on Trout last year

Was that if he hit anything before the 4th it was a bonus, so I was surprised he wasn’t in.

Nate went with Martell for defense and Rudy for offense who both had a good game

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

correct

and it was hard to play Travis at PF when Aldridge or Howard is playing center

Jerryd Bayless needs to play

This team doesn’t get to the rim. Bayless’ mindset and ability to drive is needed on the court right now

Honestly, bench Blake.

give Bayless a chance. We don’t need Blake’s 3s, it’s the only thing he is moderately good at.

by collectiveshane on Oct 29, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

My thoughts exactly

Rudy and Martell are as good or better shooters than Steve Blake. We keep one of them on the floor and the spacing issue is addressed. Portland’s problem right now is easy baskets/the FT differential that comes from being a jump shooting team. Bayless will fix address both of thise porblems

Time for perspective:

One game, outplayed in the clutch by a good team.

Not all Greg’s fault.

He’s not innocent, either.

Portland didn’t win the game, but they didn’t necessarily lose it, either.

Denver took it away.

It's official

The NBA is now an overofficiated, unwatchable joke.

I tuned in tonight looking forward to my first look at the ‘09-’10 Blazers in what I though would be a very exciting matchup. Midway through the fourth quarter – after, of, the ninth or so consecutive trip to the foul line – I realized I was bored silly, in spite of the close score.

Maybe it’s just me, but seeing the pace of the beautiful, free-flowing sport I once loved gummed up by the endless deliberations of middle aged men just did not make for a very enjoyable viewing experience.

by knickfan on Oct 29, 2009 10:55 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

I dunno, they were shooting tons of FTs

but it’s not like we weren’t fouling them. Melo just had the look tonight, and Blake and LA were embarrassingly bad.

by Royster on Oct 29, 2009 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno either

There were just so many marginal calls where the refs should have “swallowed the whistle.”

I always believe it’s best to err on the side of not interrupting the flow of play. But that’s not what I saw tonight, it seemed like every key moment down the stretch involved a referee. The sixth foul on Nene – what was that? As was the final foul that sent Oden to the line. Neither of those calls needed to be made. Along with at least a dozen others that I saw throughout the course of the contest.

by knickfan on Oct 29, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

but it seemed like we got the benefit of almost every iffy one down the stretch, so I’m a little hesitant to complain in general. Didn’t make for great watching all the time, admittedly, though.

by Royster on Oct 29, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't get that last call at all

Why would they make that kind of call with ten seconds remaining.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Well, good points of the game:

- Rebounding (until the late 4th)
- Rudy on fire
- Martell killing it

Bad points:

- Blake/LMA
- Foul trouble from centers
- Noone could come remotely close to slowing down Melo
