Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

ESPN's Mark Stein claims that Golden State is shopping SF Stephen Jackson and that there are "teams with serious interest in Jackson that have yet to be publicly identified." I hope one of these teams is NOT the Blazers, but it wouldn't shock me if KP was at least mildly interested. Jackson is (at least on paper) a significant upgrade over Webster or Outlaw (both offensively and defensively). If Portland were to package Bayless with either Webster or Outlaw, Golden State would take that in second.

Doesn’t Jackson want out REALLY BAD? I don’t blame him…I’d want out of there too. If he’s a decent (at best) upgrade why not take it?

Does anyone think he’s cancerous to a locker room or just given a bad wrap?

good question

I doubt Jackson is particularly cancerous from a personality standpoint. He’d probably be plenty motivated if he suddenly found himself on a contending team. But introducing another veteran into the Portland starting lineup, especially one who is used to being the captain of his team, might mess with our chemistry a bit and skew our locker room dynamics.

by UDUB on Oct 29, 2009 8:04 AM PDT up reply actions

If I were GS

and got offered bayless + web/outlaw I’d take that in a second. Jackson doesn’t play team ball, and is terrible as a member of the community. His presence in the locker room is more detrimental than neutral. I would not trade either of our 3 players above for him straight up even if the salaries did match, because I do not want a stephen jackson on our team. I followed the other teams he has been affiliated with, and I do not wish to see that presence added to Portland. We built a strong team by bringing in high character guys first, and it created the right environment for growth. Given the history of the blazers organization, a criminal who can play ball is not really needed here. I also don’t want to see us go only 2 deep at PG (mills does not count yet), even though Andre and Blake are very resilient. Bayless backs up our 2s also, and both Roy and Rudy take some serious hits and always have the potential for injury. Martell can play some 2, but that would leave us with a gaping hole at 3. (Outlaw can not eat ALL the minutes)

He is not a significant upgrade on the court to such a level that it would be worth it from a basketball perspective. From a personnel perspective it would be suicide.

on a not-really-related note

Picking up where he left off last season, Don Nelson only played Anthony Randolph 9 minutes last night. This kid can play, but he can’t get on the floor for a terrible Warriors team. I don’t get it.

I say offer to take on Jackson as long as we get Randolph in the deal too

How did you guys win that?

No kidding

He starts the totally green Steph Curry over the best shooter in the league (Morrow) and he doesn’t give any run to his the guy who has the most potential to be a superstar on that team. Glad I’m not a Golden State fan. They’re not stupid enough to trade Randolph, but I’d take him in a heartbeat.

by UDUB on Oct 29, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought the Randolph thing was dumb too...

…then I read he had some nagging back pain so he was held out mostly. He should start their next game.

Come on man, I mean, come on, jeeze

Only one game into the season and you post a trade rumor about Stephen Jackson. KP might be interested in a 3-way trade, but to even suggest that KP would want Jackson on the roster, based on his character alone, is asinine.

by tominhawaii on Oct 29, 2009 8:36 AM PDT reply actions

excuse me

Just passing along a rumor I’d heard elsewhere. Thought people might care. No need to be rude.

Plus, if you can read, you’ll see that I don’t want Jackson on the roster either, and all I suggested was that KP might be “mildly interested.” Is that really so hard to “asinine”? Jackson has a Turkoglu-like skill set offensively and is a much better defender than Webster or Outlaw. You’d be crazy not to at least consider making a move that would be a major talent upgrade. Ultimately, for personality/chemistry reason, I doubt KP would get anywhere close to pulling the trigger, but suggesting that he’d at least think about it is not crazy.

by UDUB on Oct 29, 2009 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Sorry

I didn’t mean to come off as rude. But the suggestion that KP would even consider Jackson is asinine. He’s a nut job, he’s been in fights, after he got more money from GS, he asked to be traded. KP wouldn’t consider a trade for Jackson for even a second.

by tominhawaii on Oct 29, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Stephen Jackson is awesome.

How do you know what KP is thinking? That’s a bold claim. The Spurs have interest in him again and have only said nice things about Jackson since he helped them win a championship.

He has a gun tattoo? Aw, that’s just crazy. If I was a little kid that might seem really scary.

Having Roy on the team has made it a little easier to be both open Husky fan AND a Blazer fan. People like Roy so much that they realize UW can’t be all bad. :)

You say you wouldn't be surprised if KP was mildly interested

When you get a few minutes watch the LaMarcus Aldridge/KP press conference. You’ll notice KP saying for the umpteenth time that the Blazer’s personnel decisions always begin with an understanding of the players character. That’s not a quote but he leaves no doubt. Nonetheless, Tom may be right about the possibility of a 3 way trade. It is a business after all.

GMs are always intrigued by the idea of adding talent

On paper, Stephen Jackson is a HUGE upgrade for the Blazers at the 3, and he’s available on the cheap right now because GS needs to move him. You’re right, though, once the discussion moved from his stats to his personality, that would probably be the end of the discussion.

by UDUB on Oct 29, 2009 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Possible 3-way trade w/ Hou

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yhfbceu

Jackson goes to HOU. Battier comes to POR. Webster & Bayless go to GS.

It’s very unlikely Houston would go for this. They really like Battier. But they are pretty hard up for offense this year and Jackson offers much more on the offensive end then Battier. Maybe we could sweeten the deal for them by giving them the rights to someone (Claver?). It would be worth it to get Battier.

by UDUB on Oct 29, 2009 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I think HOU would rather have webster/bayless

and while I agree that trade would upgrade our talent, it does not match our window. Houstons window, if it exists anymore, exists only if Yao returns and is in his prime.

Daryl Morey would never do that under any circumstances.

At this point, my money is on Stephen Jackson headed to Cleveland for Delonte West and filler.

Seems possible.

Actually scratch that. I can’t see the Warriors trading Jackson because he’s unstable for another guy who’s unstable.

I think Stephen Jackson reputation as a trouble maker is overblown...

He might not be the smartest guy off the court, but from what I have heard, he is an excellent teammate and locker room guy. Ya, he has made some boneheaded decisions, ok, a lot of boneheaded decisions. I believe that if he was surrounded by the right people, he would really shine. Especially on a team that is contending for championships and already has some leadership in place(like the blazers). Here is what wiki says about his reputation:

Mainstream media outlets generally portray Jackson in a negative way, highlighting the fact that, in the past five years, he has been charged with felony criminal recklessness and a number of misdemeanors, including assault, disorderly conduct, and two counts of battery.24

Some sources identify Jackson in a more positive manner. Former teammate Tim Duncan once labeled Jackson as the “ultimate teammate” during his days in San Antonio. ESPN analyst and sportswriter Michael Smith finds Jackson to be “articulate, charming, and thoughtful.”25 Lang Whitaker, executive editor of Slam Magazine, states Jackson is “one of my favorite players, after all.”26

Marcus Thompson of the Contra Costa Times conveys his opinion as such: “He takes the younger players under his wing, taking them shopping, dispensing advice, lending an ear. What’s more, he does the little things that are unbecoming of a millionaire thug. He looks people in the eye when they talk to him, as if he cares about what they’re saying. He frequently doles out handshakes, half-hugs and, to women, pecks on the cheek. He returns phone calls. He mends fences, lifts spirits, makes others feel special.”27 Gwen Knapp, of the San Francisco Chronicle states “He couldn’t have been more charming or more engaged, the perfect face of the franchise.”28

Former coach Rick Carlisle and current coach Don Nelson have constantly referred to Jackson’s high character. On the Jim Rome show, Nelson stated Jackson is not simply a good person in the limited world of the NBA, but one of the finest people he has ever known.29 Pacers executive Donnie Walsh, who was principally responsible for the Golden State trade, stated “I love Jack to death. He’s emotional and he’s going to get technicals. But that’s just part of the package. He’s a great team guy.”30

During his 7-game suspension to begin the 2007–08 NBA season, Jackson decided to donate a significant portion of his time towards community service in the Oakland area, in order to make a positive impact while giving the public a chance to meet him. He organized several events, geared mainly towards children.31 Additionally, during a game against the Toronto Raptors, Jackson paid tribute to forward Matt Barnes and his ailing mother whom he had left to support in her battle against cancer, by wearing the number 22 on his headband. Jackson also offered to miss his return from suspension if Barnes needed the support at home.32 Jackson is also known to attend Bible study with other Warriors such as Kelenna Azubuike, former Warrior Al Harrington, and Brandan Wright.33 Pairing up with Southwest Airlines, Jackson and the Warriors organization arranged an essay contest for elementary school students from his hometown of Port Arthur, which gave 10 third-graders the opportunity to meet Jackson and receive tickets to the following night’s game.34

The NBA recognized Jackson for his ongoing charitable causes and presented him with the league’s Community Assist Award for March 2008. During the month of March alone, he participated in a Silence the Violence rally, teamed up with Grammy Award-winner John Legend to raise funds for the Show Me Campaign, participated in a groundbreaking for a basketball court, and launched his own foundation.35

In conjunction with the Good Tidings Foundation, Jackson unveiled the Stephen Jackson Basketball Court at Omega Boys Club in San Francisco on April 11, 2008. Additionally, in honor of Jackson’s continued commitment to the Bay Area community, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed Saturday, April 12, 2008 – the day after the unveiling – as Stephen Jackson Day in San Francisco.36

I don’t know, it would definitely be a risk, but Jackson can really ball. He would be a HUGE upgrade over Webster or Outlaw on both ends of the floor. If he buys into winning, and is willing to be more of a role player than a captain, the blazers could be very scary with him on the roster. I am sure KP knows a lot more about Jacksons character than we do, so if he decides it would work, I would be behind the move 110%. So long as KP isn’t giving up too much talent…

Wiki has more opinions than I do

but mine remains that criminals are not needed to win a championship, and that real character guys tend to speak good of even convicts. I can’t recall TD saying anyone was a “total *-clown and waste of talent”. It’s not surprising he was kind. I still hate the spurs. I hope we stomp them.

by lurtsman on Oct 29, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

that bio kind of reminds me of Rasheed

great teammate, communicates well on defense, gives away coats to kids at Christmas

but collects technicals and threatens sportswriters. Wallace hasn’t got the rapsheet that Jackson has, but if KP red-flagged Blair due to his eating habits, he’d have some ’splaining to do if he went after S-Jack

“CTC, both teams played hard”
