No subject chapter 2 verse 1 JD;10/28/09

I agree with Tom that a topic in a JD is becoming obsolete

Star-divide

People make a few polite comments and then just shine it on and talk about whatever they want anyway. In the interest of typing 75 words, maybe no topic is a good thing,it might encourage people to be more creative.Just imagine if every one had a topic? Consider this last sentence to be just meaningless drivle with no subject or merit what so ever to fill the word quota.

There is an icon of a tree. Simply press the icon and insert the image location(website address) in that box. To get the image location, right click on the picture you want to post, select “copy image location”, then paste it in the image boxy thing that you pulled up using the tree icon…

by Starvin' Marvin on Oct 28, 2009 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

seeing as I was a fan of that detroit team that won the championship, this was my favorite part. I was so disappointed the day that I had heard he was being traded.
He begins packing at the team hotel, when there’s a knock on the door. It’s Hamilton and Prince, the trio together one last time. They embrace, cry, laugh and reminisce. They call Ben Wallace, a Cavalier now, and put him on speaker phone. Wallace tells them, “I told you how they are.” Hamilton is the most affected of all. He has just signed an extension, and he tells Chauncey he wants to be traded now, that if he’d known they were going to trade Chauncey, he never would’ve re-upped in Detroit.

They keep talking about games, moments, shots. Hamilton has always told Chauncey he wants his toddler son to someday marry Chauncey’s toddler daughter, and he brings it up again. At one point, Piper calls Chauncey’s cell and Chauncey tells her, “Call me back. I’m talking to my guys.” It goes on this way for three incredible hours that Chauncey says, “I’ll never forget. We were, ‘Wow, wow,’ in disbelief. Just coming to the realization it was over.’”

Eventually, Chauncey tells them he has a flight to catch, and he walks out the door. The three of them enter the elevator, and Chauncey pauses to give Hamilton a last hug.

Hamilton breaks down, sobbing. Absolutely sobbing.

What in the blue hell is wrong with the Cleveland Cavaliers? I need answers y'all!

One guess of mine is that Shaquille O’Neal is now a major detriment on defense, especially at defending the pick-and-roll and coming out to defend more perimeter-oriented centers — which was seemingly the death of him tonight — however, I doubt that’ll improve even if the “Big Diesel” slims down throughout the season.

A still dream of a Greg Oden and Brook Lopez frontline.

Unlike when people clamor for a “Twin Towers” unit featuring Oden and Joel Przybilla, this would actually function smoothly. Lopez can actually play the 4 and has a nice face-up game to boot, which was shown at Stanford when playing alongside his brother.

Hell, I wouldn't even ask for Devin Harris.

Brook Lopez > LaMarcus Aldridge, but now Aldridge is a Poison Pill Provision player and a supposed “franchise cornerstone” — which is a label that should belong only to Brandon Roy and Greg Oden — so screw it.

Brook Lopez could live off of the pick-and-roll and occasional pick-and-pop, while Greg Oden ...

could be a traditional back-the-the-basket center who feasts upon being fed down on low block and putbacks from offensive rebounds.

It’s all experiencing, choosing, learning from mistakes and thereby finding out what’s important to you. You don’t have much time to be a teen/young adult. Take advantage of it while you can.

Meaning is what you take from experiences and then apply to other facets of life. The research just shows that hardships tend to lend more meaning and reflection than achievements. This isn’t to mean that a life without complications is devoid of meaning, but rather the difficulties a person experiences tend to weigh more heavily… and the subjective impact of hardships is completely unique to the individual.

by galacticlove on Oct 28, 2009 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

i know you're not asking me

but i’d say that depends on personality. i’m such that hardships weigh heavier on me than blessings. i have to remind myself quite often that my life doesn’t actually suck. but then there are others that seem to be happy all the time and only see the good things in life, which is great too.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 28, 2009 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

by DrivetheLane on Oct 29, 2009 7:35 AM PDT up reply actions

It really depends on the person, I guess

Some rich kid handed everything is defined by his blessings and lack of hardships, but someone else who dealt with hardships to achieve success is defined by it as well.

Hard to say… I would guess hardships since hardships are more universal than blessings.

by Mortimer on Oct 28, 2009 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

so

i guess this goes back to the point that it is more about how you respond to your hand then the cards you get dealt?

I think some of it has to do with the support structure of their own family, and whether or not parents have found success in life.

Sometimes the lack of success or complete failure by the parents, can be the impetus for someone finding success.

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

by Tyler Durrden on Oct 28, 2009 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

pretty different notion than others

I’d say it’s more common to respect one’s own hardships, because it shows a sense of accomplishment to yourself—i don’t know if that’s a better “sense of one’s self” though. saying I recovered from smokin the crack and growing up in Detroit makes me seem like a bad butt, both to you and to me.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 28, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I entirely agree… part of why this question is in my head.. i am struggling with the idea that people are made better by surviving horrible things..

by galacticlove on Oct 28, 2009 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

This statement is completely false. When I was growing up, I was considered a highly gifted and advanced student.

I was involved in many extra-curricular activities, artistically, academically, and athletically. My family life however was a complete disaster. My parents divorced when I was five, and my parents relationship devolved into something just above non-communication. They began the classic ploy of playing the children against the other parent, and at the same time my mother(who I lived with at the time) had decided to give up a well paying professional job, to pursue her dreams. This lead to many late nights at work for her, for meager pay, and things like food, electricity and heat became quite spotty at my house growing up. She funneled a lot of the child support my father paid into building her business, while there weren’t other things being taken care of. By the age of seven I was responsible for my own laundry and made myself breakfast and lunch most days. To compound things I lived in a wealthy town, and was surrounded by students who didn’t share my intellect, but had many more social advantages, eventually I became a target of their ridicule. Without a strong male role model in my house I did not know how to deal with bullies, and would often times get beat up on the way home from school.

My social growth had been severely stagnated, even though I was gifted artistically, academically, and somewhat athletically. My parents were both college graduates(from USC), but they had drifted off into their own worlds as time progressed, and by the time I was 15, my mother had lost her business to bankruptcy and my father had lost his well-paying job to one of the all too common layoffs at a former electronics giant out in beaverton. When I was a sophomore in high school, I was a 3.75 student. By the end of my junior year in high school, I was down to around a 2.5. I had finally developed socially, however by that time I was not too picky about the people I was friends with. I wanted to be friends with everybody, and at the time I was the only person in my family with a job, so I began spending a lot of time with the wrong people. I completely lost faith in my parents, and the educational system, after seeing there lives as utter failures. This would lead to a downward spiral in my life, that I only found my way out of in the last 5 years.

If you would have asked a guidance counselor where I would have gone to college when I was a freshman in high school, the list would have echoed the education I had received up to that point. By the end of my high school tenure, I was lucky to graduate. Upon graduating, while everyone else was having one last summer before they went off to college, I spent the summer finding drugs and plotting my exodus from my family. I went to art school for awhile, and showed promise, but ultimately lost motivation. I ended up with a blue collar job to pay the bills. A few years ago I tried to go back to school, and was right back to the student I was before everything went haywire, but this time I was hamstrung by the cost, being that life has gone on, and I have things like car payments, mortgage payments, credit cards etc.

It turns out that this is a common story for a lot of students who shared my experience. We were in a program called TAG, for talented and gifted. We were put in the program by the school system after completing intelligence tests at an early age. We were taught some advanced stuff, including mathematics, problem solving, engineering, and cooperative thinking. We were pulled out of our peers math and reading classes, and were being bussed into the middle schools and high schools for advanced learning. However, when we entered grade 7, everything stopped. We were essentially held back for two years of school before entering high school, where we would again have a chance to take advanced classes. Where higher learning had been fostered before, we just became normal kids. Needless to say, this caused a lot of disinterest towards our studies at a time where our intellectual arcs were just being shaped.

For me, this coupled with a horrible family life led to a less successful life than many would have seen for me early on. I guess it just depends on the yardstick you use though. I am alive, and relatively healthy. I am free of addiction. I have a steady job. I have a relatively well-adjusted outlook on life, and am emotionally balanced. The same can’t be said for many of my friends. Some are no longer with us.

So now I realize how much of this could have been prevented if I would have dealt with adversity in a different way. But I also can see how many things were stacked against me, my entire life. I’m not whining about what happened, there are a lot of people who are much worse off than me, but I thought I would tell this story because this subject is not something that can easily be talked about with broad strokes. It’s also important for me to tell people how important it is for people that have special gifts, to both recognize and develop them, otherwise you can wind up like me, a 35 year old under-educated smartass, who’s trying to figure out how to get back in the game, struggling every day with a job that doesn’t give much satisfaction, and fighting off feelings of regret over my inability to see a bigger view of life. Don’t be like Tyler Durrden. Get your learnin’, and feel lucky for the things you should feel lucky for.

(Also just wanted to give a shout out to BE! The conversations we have on here give me a lot of mental exercise and satisfaction, things that are not always in the highest concentrations in my everyday life!)

THIS IS THE 2ND WORST COMMENT TODAY!!!!!!!!

but i rec’d it.

Tyler, you are &(&!@ YOUNG…if you can survive what you just wrote, you can pretty much do anything….

it’s never too late…do it not because you feel you have to , do it because you wanna live/thrive…however you want to define that

a diploma doesn’t make you under-educated or over-education…the best education is living life and knowing that you were able/willing to endure the peaks and valleys…

i think this should read “Be like Tyler Durrden, learn from what I went through, and watch me kick ass!”

anyways, you already know what i’m saying cuz you would tell me the same thing…don’t regret anything..it’s not worth it…i mean, i don’t regret giving my numbers to all the lady bedgers…now they stalk me even though i had to face the fact that they all have testicles

man, i gotta buy a lot of people beer…

btw, pre-funking at McFadden with my ex-gf Sophia tomorrow before the game if anyone want to join

nothing defines me…i define what definition is needed in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by broyposse on Oct 28, 2009 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow – you should have made a post on this, love the question.

Wish is had more time, but here’s my short 2 cents.
Some people are truly gifted because they’re born that way.
Others obtain gifts which are born out of hardship.
Others still, have such a desire that they push themselves extremely hard, which could be also defined as a hardship of sorts which is brought on by the desire.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

by Blazer1342 on Oct 28, 2009 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Hence,

So for most except the truly gifted, our hardships and gifts are inseparably tied together.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

by Blazer1342 on Oct 28, 2009 11:55 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a tough question

People are so amazing and complex that I think it’s impossible to define someone by either their giftings or their hardships. Everyone has an amazing life story with many chapters….to define one’s life by just one or two of those chapters or one or two themes that run through a series of chapters doesn’t do justice to everything else that’s been written.
