View from the Cheap Seats: Quick Notes on 10/27 Blazers vs. Rockets

1) Our 2nd and 3rd string small forwards combined for 37 points.  That's depth.

2) Brandon Roy had a terrible night.  LaMarcus Aldridge, Joel Pryzbilla, and Greg Oden all had foul trouble.  We still won.  See #1.

3) Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster can play defense.  I don't care what other people write. (Yeah, I know who they were covering tonight, but let's not be cynical...)

4) Greg Oden's stat sheet should have a special column that reads shots disrupted = 67.

5) Steve Blake and Andre Miller should, under no circumstances, be on the court at the same time.

add to that

Miller, not Blake, should be on the court the final 2 minutes

How did you guys win that?

There were a few plays where the Blazers actually cared about defense

one that comes to mind is the one where Travis got the steal and breakaway dunk. Miller and Webster were denying their man the ball, it wasn’t going to go to chuck hayes, and Rudy forced the white guy into the corner with Joel and forced him to throw a bad pass backwards that Travis took and dunked it. Best play of the game IMHO

I also sat in the cheap seats and am going to toss in my random bits

1. Most of the chants the fans had were started up by I think section 315. Everyone in the back row of that section were hardcore.

2. Martell’s third quarter throwdown needs a poster, someone needs to get on that. He adds another level of excitement to the team with his high flying ways and sharp shooting (save for that airball…). In the first quarter Martell had essentially blocked I think scola with his armpit.

3. The crowd was puzzled at Roy’s missing of a wide open layup (never thought I’d say that). Roy realized it was the fourth quarter and woke up, which was nice.

4. Greg tore it up in his return during the fourth quarter. He will blocks people with both hands.

5. I’ve got a nice pic of the numbers on the hustle board. At one point in time we had more rebounds then the rockets had steals, blocks and rebounds combined.

6. The intro was awesome, they have a new effect where they project the player’s pic/them in action on the entirety of the court. They did have a number of redone touches/animations which were great to see.

7. I’m sure you’ve heard by now, trout cut his hair! I think the hair was throwing off his balance for his jumpshots cause he was killing it. Oh yea, Miller did too, so I guess no more conversations about his crazy hair.

8. The team had some nice touches for fans on their way in. Programs, flashing lights, hats and a fan swag bag. The tickets themselves foldouts in the shape of the number 40.

I have seats in 315,

and the folks in the back are indeed very rowdy.

The hats were cool, and it was somewhat amusing watching everyone wear their hats with the tag still on.

Nate’s “original” 2nd unit of Dre, Rudy, Marty, Trav and Joel looked darn good together. I agree that Roy and Miller need to learn to play together, but that 2nd unit will suffer greatly with Blake running point. It’s nice to feel confident in the backup 5. When Sergio, Rudy, Channing, Trav & Joel were on the floor last year, I was just scared. Honestly, no lead was safe.

Bonus points to Greg for his 1 assist, a pass to Andre in low post for an easy layup. I enjoyed the role reversal on that play.

Swag Bag? I didn’t get one. Nor could I find the person handing out free Egg McMuffin coupons at halftime, but I was under strict orders to return with frozen yogurt so time was limited.

Mostly, it was just great to see the Blazers back on the court.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
