Yeah, Brandon Roy's unwillingness to defer to Greg Oden offensively does scare me in the long run.

It may not make a noticeable difference the next game or even this season, but somewhere down the line Oden must be fully intergrated on offense. That not only lies on Roy, but also Nate McMillan. Man, if they’re too bullheaded by being set in their inflexible ways, then there could be problems.

I also think Andre will help Roy in that aspect.

You can tell that Miller routinely looks for Oden (and the other bigs) out there, and that will (hopefully) rub off on Brandon.

ALSO TO ME

This game shows why Houston will do better than a lot predict.

Can they score? Not really. Can they defend and constantly play hard? Yes.

When teams fall asleep, they’ll do well. Maybe not enough for the playoffs, but not bad at all.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

Correct

They’re not a team of rookies. They play smart and maximize their potential.

by levelhed on Oct 27, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Is usually enough to win, if the other more talented team isn’t on their game.

Can they beat the mavs and the sonics? Those are the two teams that will prevent them from making the playoffs. I don’t think the suns will be any good this year.

But I think OKC is awful at everything. I don’t see their offense being MUCH better than their 29th worst offense they was last year, nor their 30th worst defense.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

by diskord on Oct 27, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya think OKC will win 20+ more games?

That’s what it would take to just challenge for the 8th seed.

I don’t see Harden making that much of a difference. They are really bad.

To me, anywho.

Houston will likely be the 9th seed, with the Suns taking their place.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes. I think that, for a team that should have been jockeying for lottery balls, they played a lot tougher than people remember at the end of last year. And I think that both the East and West are top-heavy this year. Not to mention that the sonics have cap room to make a serious move mid season should they want to.

I’m not making guarantees, but I’d be shocked if the sonics weren’t in the discussion after the all-star break.

"I could have done with other loves perhaps. But there it is, either you love or you don't" -SB

by nightbluefruit on Oct 27, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

I dunno… I tended to watch them quite a bit, because I enjoy watching young teams develop (our awful Blazer teams hooked me on it), and I just see a really bad team with no playmakers, no defenders, they don’t play their best rebounder (Collison) much, and their primary ballhandler is a horrible passer.

I just don’t see them being good at anything at a level that is good enough to challenge for the 8th seed.

I could very well be wrong, and I am not an expert on Harden. But the things Durant is bad at, only defense tends to improve. The rest will take a loooong time, if ever.

And as long as he’s as bad as he is at what he is bad at, and is the primary ballhandler, they’ll be rough on offense. And their defense is ridiculously bad.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

While they won more when others tanked

Their schedule eased up the last few months and they took advantage of other teams not going hard, you could say.

I’ve also heard the defense that they’d keep it close for 3 quarters but then lose in the 4th… and that is what all bad teams do. No one gets blown out every night, but they lose when it matters.

I could be wrong, I just see NO reason why they’d be making that jump without getting a much better player in the draft. I like Westbrook, think Durant is going to be THE best scorer in the NBA, but Green is not good at anything and I just don’t think Harden will be that much of a gamechanger.

They have no good big men. They just need a few more drafts before they are relevant in terms of not just being a neat team to watch.

Started out slow

Portland gets off to a huge lead once the second unit stepped in. The Rockets made it close but in the end the more talented team won.

Oden only had 2 points, but had 12 boards and 5 blocks. He looked like he was pressing on the offensive end early in the game, and then the rest of the team kinda went away from him as the game went on.

the game tonight was not a good setup for greg's offensive game. He will still have problems getting stripped until he learns to go up with the ball. instead of holding it down low.

The rockets have some pretty smart defenders( See; crafty(see also; kinda dirty), and they were too quick for him. He has to use his size to his advantage, get lower position, and get better looks from his teammates.

I think Artest will cost them some wins and create some tougher wins than need be

During the regular season, but will be very dangerous in the post season where he tend to buckle down and not be such a chucker and defends like he should.

He didn’t handle Roy well in the series, Battier did, but he’s still a great defender when he wants to be. He just coasts on both ends during the regular season.

On a side note, Dallas Mavericks made me look like a fool tonight.

The ‘04 Detroit Pistons and ’95 Houston Rockets still come to mind, though, for this season’s Maverick team should pull off a blockbuster deadline deal that vindicates me.

Now, in a way to relate that to the Portland Trail Blazers, let me add the organization still holds the draft rights to Marcelo Nicola, who was acquired in the Valentine’s Day deal back in ’95 that sent Clyde Drexler home to Houston.

as far as touches go for Oden,

he had opportunities. The box score shows he only attempted 3 baskets, but the 7 TO’s indicate he had more opportunities, so bashing Roy for not dishing him the ball enough doesn’t make any sense.

Like 1badger mentioned

His TOs were offensive fouls mostly, a 3 in the key, and 2 strips.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem I had

with the guards tonight (not just Roy) was they were missing both Greg and LaMarcus in good positions. There was one possession where GO had a seal and Blake stared at him, swung it, and 3 seconds was called. I thought there were some missed, easy opportunities tonight

I thought the floor combo was Oden, Roy, TO, Blake, Martell, it’s escaping me who missed it right now, but that one was the most glaring of a series of misses. Still, it is the first game of the season, so I hope it’s just a matter of getting timing down

A lineup of

Oden, LMA, Roy, Rudy, and Miller (potentially our 4th quarter lineup some nights) won’t miss Oden and LMA too often when they got good position.

Rudy is great at passing to the bigs, as is Miller, and Roy isn’t horrible at it— just not used to it.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

by blazeraddict on Oct 27, 2009 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely depends on matchups

But B-Roy won’t guard any SFs worse than Outlaw could, and I like his defense when it matters. If he can maintain his focus more, he has the ability to defend, but with someone like Artest or Melo, we would want a bigger body out there.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Ron Artest is overrated at this point in his career.

I can’t believe people still think he is an elite defender at this point after Roy gashed him during the playoffs last year.

Regarding defense, Darko Milicic is the best post defender on that team. Yet, ...

when you’re going up against David Lee and Eddy Curry for that distinction, it’s an easy battle. Jared Jeffries is a solid defender as the backup 4; yet, he’s not a stout one-on-one interior defender, but rather more of what LaMarcus Aldridge could be — which is a hard-working help defender — if he was motivated on that end of the court.

Anyway, New York certainly won’t be the worst team in the NBA this season. Regardless, a bottom-five finish isn’t out of the question. I like New Jersey more than most people, though, as well as feel that Scott Skiles will coach up Milwaukee even through tough times to 30 wins.

the Clippers have two solid 1v1 C defenders

Until proven otherwise, Bynum is a much much better offensive player than Oden.

You have to be a little disappointed with Oden’s offense today after all the hype we heard— Chuck Hayes is a very clever, crafty defender, but 7 turnovers is pretty unacceptable. Its one game against a good defensive team— not time to judge anything, but disappointing he didn’t get off to a better start for his confidence.

Oden’s defense looked improved and his rebounding is as advertised though.

Yeah, he did great I thought

At times dominant, game changing defense.

He couldn’t get a flow going offensively, and the turnovers from 3 in the key, the travel, moving picks, etc, make it seem worse than it was.

Hayes is just as advertised: a great interior defender, which is why he plays when he is Joel-esque offensively.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

he got a lot of garbage points in the pre-season.

in this game the ball wasn’t taking small bounces off the rim, and people weren’t feeding it to him. Which is fine, because he didn’t have very good position a lot of the time. Hayes is a brick, and Oden’s spin around jumper isn’t very good yet. If he can get 12 rebounds, and 3-5 blocks per game, i’m not worried about his points.

by jksnake99 on Oct 27, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions

why be disappointed? I assume that this season is going to be very inconsistnent for him. He’s going to have games when he’s in a flow and playing well and games where he plays poorly.

I think he’ll feed off the momentum of the team as well. When Roy, LMA, Andre, etc. can’t keep from dribbling the ball off their foot its just a bad night all around.

The entire team had no rhythm and flow. Remember how Greg would get the ball stripped going up for dunks about three times per game last November? He slowly phased that out. As he gets comfortable, we’ll see the turnovers go down.

I was happy with his defense. We need that badly, as you yourself have opined recently. I believe it was you who said last April that you were okay with Greg’s offense but disappointed in his defense.

I get what you’re trying to say. It ain’t pretty right now. My argument is that we didn’t think it would be.

its not rational to draw conclusions after one game

but its human to be disappointed when you hear so much about improved offense and it fizzles in game 1.

there was plenty to be happy about in this game though, from Oden’s rebounding and D to the solid play of Outlaw and Webster to the stretch where Miller looked great running the 2nd unit.

by jksnake99 on Oct 27, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought this is what you'd expect it to look like

Because of Hayes. Thats not always going to be a bad matchup, but like with Maggette and LMA, the inexperience and differentness of it will cause Oden problems.

Since he didn’t get much chances to score on putbacks, he only got 3 shots and didn’t do much. He still passed really well and did what we needed him to do.

Offense will come, and it’ll be alllll gravy. His defense and rebounding was very exciting tonight.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

2 strips that led to turnovers, some moving picks, a travel, it wasn’t that bad, it just wasn’t good.

I’m more bummed we missed him when open or with great position. That would have turned a 2 point game into a potential double double.

He got doubled and passed very well out of the double team.

After not touching the ball for forever, he rushes up bad shots. He’s young. But the attention he forced Houston to spend on him, despite the fact he hadn’t done ANYTHING on offense all game, was very important.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree we missed him several times

but I kind of understand not wanting to pass the ball to the guy with 7 turnovers.

I don't see that as the reason why they hesitate

Inexperience with feeding a dominant big is what makes them hesitate.

Ya don’t see Rudy, Miller, or Howard hesitate— it’s not because they ignore his turnovers. They just know how to do it.

Like ya say

We need to see more.

I don’t think this one odd offensive game (but exceptional defensive game with a ton of blocks— which we’ve been waiting to see for longer than a good offensive game from Oden) negates what we had seen during the pre-season.

Such as his domination of the Kings, his outburst against the Nuggets, etc.

I remember

A few years ago now, when Hollinger posted something like his best lineups/most effective lineups in the league, and Hayes was up amongst the best players, everyone used it as a reason why Hollinger’s stuff was stupid.

Now time has shown that it revealed a hidden truth.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Right now, Oden isn't skilled enough

Even though Hayes is a midget for a center, he is a brick house with a low center of gravity. Hard for even Greg to establish good position.

Until Oden is skilled enough to combat that oddity, we’ll see a night like tonight.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:53 PM PDT up reply actions

7 turnovers doesn't always equal 7 turnovers

HOW he gets the turnovers is what matters. Everyone got stripped tonight— it’s what those type of defenders do.

It wasn’t like he was getting the ball continuously and mucking it up each time. He never even got a chance. We’ve seen his better offensive game in the pre-season, and could see this sort of game coming a mile away with how the matchups are.

I think when we see Oden get stripped

We note it more, even though Roy and LMA got stripped as much as Oden was.

Oden hadn’t had those bad stripping problems since early last season. Yeah, he gets stripped, but so does everyone. And Hayes does that to people.

I don’t think he gets stripped more than any other young center, unless something has shown that to be false.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions

First line is mean't to be tongue-in-cheek

I know it means nothing…I am serious that we need to give Greg a better chance to get into a rhythm early next game and to justify that he will need to cut down his travels and protect the ball better – he was sloppy on offense tonight.

I thought the Rockets showed why they will win more than some expect

Despite their lack of stars, they play smart and hard. Against less talented teams than us (which is truly about 25 other teams or so), that is enough to win.

We’re just pretty damn good is all.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions

And by "more than some expect"

They got a chance at 40 wins, and will beat the cellar dwellers in the West and any good team that takes them lightly.

The Rockets really go no playmakers though, no one to run the offense through, and Scola is the best option for that. Scola is good, but not in that role.

Rockets are lacking in size, distributors and scorers. No matter how many no-stat all-stars and scrappy players that team has, they will have trouble beating the teams above .500 this year.

Next year with cap space and/or following a T-Mac deal that might look different.

I agree with the notion that Morey is way overrated based on what his teams have accomplished

But they do got good role players, and role players who play hard. How much that affects games can’t be underestimated.

Without some stars, they won’t be a really good team, but still a very tough team to beat.

I just can’t see them being awful with all of those smart players who play defense. There is not another bad team that I can EVER remember who were such stout, smart, hard working defenders.

The Rockets won’t score, but the other team won’t either.

I see no reason to change my prediction that they will win 44-46 games and make the playoffs as the seed

44-46 win teams don’t win in the Rose Garden. I think this game did more to make my Rockets prediction look right than it did to disprove it. Of course, its just one game so it doesn’t really prove anything.

I say depends more on Baron

If Baron is motivated and Dunleavy lets him run a bit, it’ll make Griffin look a lot better and get the whole team going. Baron can be damn good when he isn’t shooting 6 threes a game and eating a plate of lasagna at halftime.

It’s a big IF, though… Baron looked good in pre-season. If he has any pride, he’ll not let last year happen again.

The draft is the best way to get awesome anyways, so I think it’s smarter. Just keep payroll down, don’t sign anyone to a dumb contract, keep drafting, and they can become good. Just won’t be good based on who they got now.

I think it’s more a function of Brandon adapting to the situation that he has here. At UW Nate Robinson and Will Conroy dominated the ball and he was accustomed to playing off the ball. That UW team in his junior year ran beautifully…. so fun to watch.

With Steve Blake as his backcourt mate and little scoring punch in the inside, he’s become a different kind of player by necessity. I think as he is with Rudy and Andre he’ll slowly adjust. It’s a process.

i watched the Boston game tonight.

they definitely pass the ball. New Orleans has a world class point guard, so that’s dynamic in its own way. Houston grinds, but they play like a team. You know the league better than I, but i don’t see other teams standing around as much, with only the player who has the ball active.

by Blazin' on Oct 28, 2009 12:27 AM PDT up reply actions

that list was just of playoff teams

If I expanded it to the whole league it would be more than twice as long. In my humble opinion, you would have many of the same qualms with most teams in the league if you watched them as much as you do the Blazers. You are more harsh on your own team, which I completely understand because I am as well, albeit in a different way.

Brandon needs to be tamed the same way Kobe was. The question then, is, what is Nate’s triangle?

by Blazin' on Oct 28, 2009 12:20 AM PDT up reply actions

LA runs an offense.

that involves several players and several options. As I recall, Jackson had to really work Kobe to get him to play in the structure of the offense which adapts to what the defense offers.

by Blazin' on Oct 28, 2009 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that had more to do with Bynum improving and the acquisition of Gasol--

both of whom (when healthy), are better than any of Roy’s teammates— than any real substantive change in Kobe’s attitude.

by jksnake99 on Oct 28, 2009 12:30 AM PDT up reply actions

you don't think that the coaching

and offensive strategy is a significant factor?

by Blazin' on Oct 28, 2009 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I definetely think Phil Jackson's staff knows more about offense than Nate McMillan's

However, I don’t begrudge Nate for using an offense that puts the ball in his best player’s hands and also makes use of the 2nd best offensive weapon at his disposal— the Blazers’ offensive rebounding ability. While it may not be pretty to watch for lovers of team basketball such as yourself, its hard to question the results it produced over 82 games last year. Improvements must be made, as Houston demonstrated in the playoffs, but its still not nearly as big a concern for me as team defense.

by jksnake99 on Oct 28, 2009 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions

you see that helps.

if the static quality of the Blazers’ offense enables their high rebounding rate, that is at least one good reason for it. By having a very controlled offense, the Blazers have a good idea when and where the ball will be off the rim?

by Blazin' on Oct 28, 2009 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't know. Maybe.

I doubt that’s the reason Nate uses it— rather, I think its the only one he’s comfortable with. I’m not much more convinced Nate is a championship coach that you are, but I at least credit him with having a track record of coaching some very efficient offenses, both in Seattle and in Portland.

by jksnake99 on Oct 28, 2009 12:47 AM PDT up reply actions

yea.

I have my doubts. Efficiency. I want to see resiliency and I will be happier. it feels like this team is not doing what it needs to to prepare for the postseason. And that frustrates me.

But maybe it is just a question of style, and not a question of one-dimensionality. . thanks for taking the time, jk. :)

i'm glad i can reciprocate.

all the “i love morey”, “defensive per 48 minute, pace adjusted” stuff just takes the fun out of the game, in my humble opinion

i’ll try not to be too much of a jerk, though.

13th for a young team with Pelton’s age factor and Oden’s improved D could be good this year though.

I really hope the games start streaming on Blazers.com soon.

If I had to term the present situation, it would have to be a series of unfortunate events.

I think you are missing a chance to look at the game in another way.

You don’t have to think about them when you are watching the game, but I think you can add to your understanding of basketball.

Funniest moment in the live game day thread might have been a Rockets fan coming over and asking if we paid the refs

Here we go again. Oh, and the rumor that Joel is some soft flopper is also hard to extinguish. I mean, if that is floating around, how will we ever convince people that LaMarcus and Oden are remotely good.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

I only see Rockette fans saying that about Joel

They don’t see the preferential treatment Yao got in those playoffs.

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t like when people treat them as the end all be all, because stats can lie, but they always make you think and analyze things differently when they show you something new.

They can reveal hidden truths.

He did catch Battier napping on that backdoor cut

Guys will score even on great defense sometimes though, and Battier IS a great defender.

He needs to be on a team with good players to be fully effective though. A glue dude. The problem with the Rockets, is that everyone is a glue dude on the team right now, and they need some wood to be stuck to. Can’t just be all glue!

by Mortimer on Oct 27, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Lol, perfect description. That might be one of the few teams ever with too many indians scrapping around and not enough chiefs. Or as stat nerds would say, low usage.

He also managed to dribble into traffic and then throw up improvised shots the way old Marty would. But his outside shot definitely is coming back, and it's better/quicker than Nic's.

And he tries hard to get rebounds, unlike Trav and at times LaMarcus.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
