I have a feeling that if Howard saw Brandon making a sandwich he’d approach him the next day saying ‘I saw the way you applied that mayo to both slices of bread and it got me to thinking, any team that spread condiments like that is headed in the direction of a championship.’

My team went to the playoffs in my first year.

I loved this article--and hated it as well

As with all of Quick’s “behind the scenes” stuff, I’m fascinated, but also concerned that some of it should really be LEFT behind the scenes.

This Roy leadership piece in particular reads a bit like Halberstam’s “Breaks of the Game,” and that’s a serious compliment. But these “chapters” are being published before the season even begins. Better to publish the inside story of a season after it’s transpired, I’d say. Otherwise the reporter can inadvertently mess up team chemistry.

Save it for your book, Jason. Trust me, we’ll buy it. Title it “The Breaks of the Game II: The Second Coming of Rip City.”

I'm with you...

You know the players have to read this stuff. There’s a very fine line between trusting the guy who speaks for you, and resenting him. I just hope JQ doesn’t tip the balance with this kind of stuff.

He's been publishing this type of article for roughly a year....and the players aren't complaining.

If they had problems with it, he most certainly wouldn’t be getting the access.

If the players don’t have problems with it, and the publisher has no problems with it……what’s the problem?

Didn't the players have a problem some of it last season?

I seem to remember him saying that the players were getting annoyed with some of the stuff and that one of the players got into some trouble because of something Quick wrote, that he should have kept private.

Just saying…..

But I loved this article. BRoy is the leader everybody hoped for, and the player who can back it up. Great article.

The players--and even the coach--don't determine Quick's access

Quick is The Oregonian’s beat writer, and he’s been given access by the Blazers’ brass—presumably in reaction to the paranoid, closed-door policy of the Patterson regime. The players have no choice but to go along.

The PR benefits of letting media—and fans—peek behind the scenes is obvious. These are no “Jailblazers,” and the Quick articles have helped get the word out about that. But there can also be a negative impact on team chemistry stemming from all this inside stuff getting printed. In fact, I’d say that’s inevitable.

Will players begin to resent Brandon Roy?

As his relationship with McMillan grew, he said he became leery of being viewed as “Coach’s pet.”

I get a bad feeling about that, regardless of everything else that was said.

This artice is why all of you Quick-bashers out there need to shake yourselves
“My biggest stand as a leader hasn’t come yet,” Roy said. “It’s going to come at some time this year. It’s one of those things you can’t predict when it’s going to come. But I know it is out there.”

because when “Brandon’s biggest stand” finally takes place, we’ll hear about it from Jason, and none other

It's Brandon's team

and I like that this is the stamp he’s putting on it. The only real step left for him to take is on the defensive end, but if this is the type of intensity he’s bringing to practice, I like the chances of that happening this season.

Legend building at the expense of wins

Quick is doing his job.The best stories have a strong protagonist. So good for him. But I don’t think it’s good for the team when this kind of thing is publicized. The story is meant to be complimentary to Roy, but the reader is invited to infer that the rest of the team is whiney and undisciplined. The only thing that keeps them in line is sharp words from the highest paid player on the team. Roy’s head is going to explode if this kind of adulation keeps up. If he continues to put himself in this role other players are going to start enjoying seeing him fail in small ways. Please do, continue to slaver over his ability to score. Don’t ask him to run the team too. That’s not going to end good.

I don't think the problem--if there is one--is so much Roy putting himself in that role

It’s the other players—and their girlfriends / wives / friends—reading about it in the paper and on-line. Behind the locker room door, all kinds of stuff can happen and be accepted by the players. But I don’t think they’re going to be entirely happy having everyone and their mother (literally) knowing about it. Not good.

Disagree

Do you think that L@kers players, coaches, and fans have any problem with the amount of political power weilded by Kobe Bryant?

B-Roy might not be THE Kobe, but he’s OUR Kobe, in terms of his caliber as a player and the fact that he is the very cornerstone of this team. Everyone from slots 2-15 knows who the #1 player is. Furthermore, B-Roy is not the kind of borderline psycho prima donna that Kobe is either. He’s tight with people, and they respect him as a person as much as a star level player. Consider:

“I mean, if Brandon says something, it goes. It has to. It’s his team. We are all following him.” -Greg Oden

“That was a great thing you did. You showed leadership, but more importantly, you set a tone for how we will now practice.’ And I will tell you, that’s how we can become a championship caliber team…” -Juwan Howard

“Personally, I was like, ’It’s about time. About time,’ " -Martell Webster

No, I think while this team does have some “obstacles” they need to face on the road to a championship (as Dave put it), Jason Quick is not one of them.

Well, they weren’t so happy with him back when he complained about the roster and was asking to be traded to the Bulls. But if by doing so he “refocused” Kupchack into making the Gasol deal, then L*ker fan owe K*be an even greater depth of gratitude

Here’s hoping that Brandon never has to go to “that” extreme to force his front office to upgrade his supporting cast

You must think these guys are emotionally fragile and shallow.

Most people complain about something. (Hell, some folks seem to make a living of it hear at BE.) We all know we complain and when we get called on it, the normal reaction is to acknowledge that we should complain less and learn to deal with things. The sort of people who take offense at being called out when they whine are losers. I have seen little indication of anyone on this team being a loser. If they take anything away from this article, it will likely be a sense of wanting to be more like Roy. That’s one of the aspects of a good leader. Those you lead want to model themselves after you.

Ugh, cantdunk...

R U odenisgod from oregonlive? So many levels i disagree with you, Quick is allways doing his job. What kind of thing? the fact Roy is growing into “the” LEADER of our team. Not sure why you wouldn’t want this “publicized.”

RE: “The story is meant to be complimentary to Roy, but the reader is invited to infer that the rest of the team is whiney and undisciplined. The only thing that keeps them in line is sharp words from the highest paid player on the team.”

So off base, this IS a VERY young team that is lead by a VERY young leader. There will be stumbles, mistakes, and blunders. This is reality.

finally: “Roy’s head is going to explode if this kind of adulation keeps up. If he continues to put himself in this role other players are going to start enjoying seeing him fail in small ways. Please do, continue to slaver over his ability to score. Don’t ask him to run the team too. That’s not going to end good.”

Help me understand, is Roy over-rated? He cant run a team? Roy is not a grounded preson and is quick to let things go to his head? I disagree with all of these previous statements and i consider Roy that exact oposite of this, This is what makes Roy great and seperates him from the “pack.”

I am not sure what your overall point is but in Roy we should trust.

Uh, I'm cautiously wary of any case when authority goes unquestioned under the guise of leadership.

Everyone on the Portland Trail Blazers roster is their own unique person and, well, they shouldn’t become “Little Eichmanns” under the autocratic rule of the now supposedly all-powerful Brandon Roy. Besdies, to everyone with 20/20 vision, it’s clear as day that Roy will have to eventually defer some power over to Greg Oden — which’ll hopefully come sooner rather than later — for the betterment of the team. Let’s hope that transition doesn’t cause friction among the players.

Dear Paul Allen:

Waive Patty Mills & sign Ime Udoka.

Sincerely,

I agree

Leadership is cool to a point, but the other guys need to feel ownership of the team too.

A couple of weeks ago

Dave asked what we thought the most important thing was to ensure team success this year. My answer was ‘good followership’. My assumption at the time was that the team already had good leadership in the form of Roy, Przybilla and perhaps others. This article was a nice confirmation of that assumption.

I mean, if Brandon says something, it goes. It has to. It’s his team. We are all following him.

You want to know who the leader is on a team? Just look for followers.

His hope is that everyone embraces his words, takes them to heart and does what’s best for the team. If someone doesn’t, well, Roy will deal with that when it arises.

This was a breath of fresh air. Brandon is asking for good followership, but he is not above using a little ‘influence’ to ensure that it takes place.

Very excited for the season! Go Blazers!
