Are you serious Bill Simmons? X2

Okay so I know some of you may have read this already.... but I just had to vent.... On Bill " the Durant butt sniffer" Simmons' Article on the 33 Most Intriguing People of the 2009-10 NBA season.

Simmons obviously has a grudge against Portland, but what warrants this garbage against Andre Miller and KP:

21. Andre Miller
We knew Miller was a bad fit when the Blazers signed him. It just didn't feel right. He's a moody loner; they had great chemistry last season. He needs the ball in his hands; so does Brandon Roy. He likes freelancing; Nate McMillan is hands on. But Portland felt obligated to spend its extra cap money, and nobody else was pursuing Miller, so what transpired was the equivalent of two single wedding guests going through the motions on the dance floor.

I could use someone, and you could use someone. Unfortunately, I hate bald guys and I have a tiny butt; you're bald and you love bubble butts. We have no spark and are destined to fail. But crap, there's nobody better. Screw it, would you like to come back to my room?

I get Portland's thinking: It wanted to turn that cap space into an asset. And I get Miller's thinking: He wanted to get paid and hoped things would work out. But now we're here. Incredibly, Portland plans on bringing Miller off the bench. He's already miserable. (And available, by the way. Make Kevin Pritchard an offer. Seriously, call him right now.) So what did we learn? Just because you have cap space doesn't mean you HAVE to use it.

The bigger issue …

(Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009-10 Portland Trail Blazers!)

Uhh, so apparently Simmons has an issue with bald guys and girls with no butts!  And you guessed it, who is the bigger issue.... why Nate of course:

20. Nate McMillan
OK, so here's the problem when you have a young/chemistry/good-guy team, a hands-on coach and guys willing to accept their roles: Eventually, those same guys get older and want to spread their wings a little. If the chemistry goes south, that makes it worse. I thought McMillan overcoached the Blazers out of Round 1 this past spring; playing too deliberately and going big against that Rockets team was death. He might have been the perfect coach for the 2007-08 Blazers, but not the 2009-10 version. The hands-on strategy works only for so long. Just a gut feeling: I think the Blazers will outgrow McMillan this season and stop responding to him. If it isn't happening already. (And I keep hearing that it is.) And by the way, every NBA season includes …

The "Nobody Thought They'd Be Ready This Soon" Team

(This year: the Clippers.)

The "Nobody Believed In Us!" Team

(This year: The Rockets.)

The "Last Season Everything Went Right; This Season Everything Went Wrong" Team

(Impossible to predict, but I'd guess the Nuggets here. Everything went right for them last year. That never happens twice.)

The "You Thought We'd Take Another Leap, But Instead We Went Backward Because Expectations Were Too High, We Tinkered With Our Chemistry And Our Young Guys Tuned Out Their Coach" Team

And just when you think the misery and suffering is about to end... BAMMMM:

6. Kevin Durant
Prediction No. 1: Your 2009-10 scoring champ.

Prediction No. 2: Lots of "The NBA's Hottest Young Superstar!" national stories.

Prediction No. 3: With 10 days to go, the Zombies will be fighting for the eighth playoff spot as everyone says, "Wait, are they going to make the playoffs?"

Not a prediction, but definitely in play: Twenty-nine-plus points and eight rebounds per game, with 50-40-90 averages for FG/3FG/FT. Last guy who did it? The Basketball Jesus.

(In other words, hold on to your seats. You're about to go on a ride.)

Pretty terrible, but hey lets all unite and promise to stop reading/ responding to this crap.... I know I'm being hypocritical here, but we should just be excited about this season!

GO BLAZERS!!!

To be honest I like Bill Simmons...

I think he’s funny, and gives an interesting incite in the way he see’s the game. I 100% dont agree with what he says about the blazers, but those are his opinions so take them for what they are worth and move on. He is for the most part an entertainer and he is creating a storm for us blazer fans to get worked up about and add hits to his page. Lets hope in a month or two we can throw it all in his face and he will take it like a man and own up to his “historically” awful prediction.

I really don't get mad about what he says...

But it seams he targets Portland more often than not…. & he has a crush on Kevin Durant, which should be called out.

Not trying to be antagonistic here, but I'm perplexed.

Why would anyone care how he sees the game?

and gives an interesting incite in the way he see’s the game

Was “incite” instead of “insight” a deliberate choice, or a freudian slip?

More like a lack of personal grammatical editing skills due to my education through the fine portland public school system. I, personally, enjoy the way he describes and explains coaches, management, and players decisions in his own opinion, using his experience as being a fan of basketball throughout his life to validate it. I like reading his perspective on a situation and whether I agree with it or not is irrelevant because I’m pitting my own opinion against his. Its interesting to see all sides of an argument.

Most people seem to be asserting that Simmons is inflaming the public.
And the slip up was pretty funny given that you were speaking on his behalf.

Simmons is nearly in a class by himself

In terms of being wrong more than any other sportswriter.

He’s a Celtics fan, and he’s nearly always wrong when it comes to basketball. It’s one of the primary reasons he doesn’t do postmortem analysis on his earlier picks and pronouncements – Bill is wrong wrong wrong.

Only Sam Smith is in the same category in terms of being a hack, but Sam isn’t funny, while Simmons is occasionally.

Simmons does not have a grudge on Portland

As several posters have noticed, he seems to love getting a rise out of fanbases that he knows are sensitive, and right now the Blazers fanbase is one team he enjoys getting a rise out of. Chill.

Hard to get upset about a guy who doesn't know hoops

This stuff is just silly. BTW, did he go back to his “Greg Oden walks like an old man” riff? That’s a Simmons classic.

Relative to most sportswriters, he doesn't know hoops.

You have to take it in context.

what metric are you using to determine this judgment?

your own perception. hes about to release a book about basketball, consistently writes articles about basketball and offers up his opinion.

clearly he knows something about it, enough to have opinions. just cause you dont like some of his opinions or disagree with him doesn’t make his entire outlook on opinions valuable.

you value his opinion less then other sportswriters? fine! i value your opinion. I value his opnion over some other guys’ opnions but not ALL of them. thats just preference. i think its ok that people can have disagreements. this isn’t an objective science.

by mandoman10 on Oct 25, 2009 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Things can be judged without metrics.

But you could use a metric to show that he has been one of the most consistently wrong predictors of the NBA season that is a sportswriter.

That would pretty much mean he doesn’t know hoops compared to other sportswriters.

Look, I’m not claiming to know more about basketball than Bill Simmons. But I am claiming that his opinions about the future year CAN and HAVE been judged. It turns out he pretty much doesn’t know much about hoops (once again, I’m not saying I could do better).

A prediction of the future is not an opinion when that future point can be measured at that future. It becomes either correct or incorrect. This is what modern science is built on. Cause & effect. Bill Simmons isn’t good at figuring out what will happen, and that is what we usually mean when we say someone does or “doesn’t know hoops.”

i think sports writers are usually wrong about things because the nba is an unpredictable place.

i think he points out good possible developments. often when they go wrong its casue something else happened to nullify whatever factor he thought would be important. just like if the thunder are good this year.. maybe its not cuase of durant (his factor) but somthing else like westbrook being randomly better then everyone thought. saying that someones predictions are “wrong” or “right” is to simple for me. lots of things go into making predictions and what you think are gonna be important factors.

by mandoman10 on Oct 25, 2009 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I think that is where we can let it lay.

Good points.

41-41

He says that the Blazers are going to go .500 this year, so he has to be playing a game with us as fans.

I agree with the comment about his Durant butt sniffing that someone made. Durant is going to end up being one of those players that has the stats, but no rings. Simmons can stick that in his pipe and smoke it.

For fantasy basketball Durant is great!

of course for actual basketball where people play on a team…not so much…They have no chance of making it to the playoffs…

Book Signing

if you listen to him, he actual likes portland a lot (has talked about portland being a place he would move to). scheduled to do a book signing Nov. 17th and the Borders in Beaverton. on his last book tour, he’d write just about anything you wanted on the book when he signed them. I’m trying to think of some funny Greg Oden comment he would have to write.

Actually, his concern with Nate is totally within the realm of possiblity

At least to me. It is possible that team could tune him out at some point, due to issues with roles/PT. However, this usually has to be preceded by your superstar tuning you out and Roy is firmly in Nate’s camp.

Still, we’re too talented at this point to just bury a guy or two deep in the bench if he is causing a problem. Besides, it’s not like we made wholesale changes here. Only one of the guys that we brought in is likely going to see extended PT.

Wonder if

KP would like to dump miller already? I have a hard time believing thats the case before the season has even started, it will definitely be interesting to see how the PG situation plays out these next few months.

It may be true.

But don’t start believing it because BS said it.

Yeah I'm kind of feeding into this crap

But you did click on a link that said the guys name in the title…. so I’m assuming if you were on ESPN you would have read it as well…. like me. But the point is he may be funny sometimes, but he’s biased and he really has no idea what he’s talking about. Lets all admit it, most of us are going to eventually read or hear about what this jerk bag has to say.

If a person says anything negative about the Blazers

it must be because they have a secret angry bias against them.

Blazer fan stereotype = thin skinned

Thanks for proving people right.

And if the Blazers continue playing like they have in preseason, then 41 wins will be GENEROUS.

Bill Simmons writing leaves much to be desired. He isn't that knowledgeable of a sports guy, and is never

right about anything. He just aims to write articles to either state poplular opinion, or be a troll.

by BRoyInThe4th on Oct 26, 2009 8:23 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not so bad....

Of course Simmons turns of phrase are going to upset Blazer fans. But if you can get past the initial reaction of " Hey this guy is insulting The Blazers" then I think you can see that Simmons does have some points. What has the reality been this summer? Love him, Like him, Indifferent, or Hate him, Andre Miller is a chemistry question mark. Only playing out the season and time will reveal the answer. Plus like it or not, Simmons is correct to the extent that obviously Miller wasn’t The Blazers true first choice as wanted free agent. As the summer played out, Miller was concievably our 3rd choice behind Turko and Millsap….if you want to believe the offer to Millsap was more than just forcing a rival to spend big.

I also have to say, this clearly is going to be an incredibly challenging season for McMIllan. Given the expectations and the perceived talent this team has, plus the absence of the excuses of youth and development that hallmarked our rebuild, Simmons is right to target McMillan as being in a difficult situation.

Where as a Blazer fan I diverge vehemently from Simmons is the ultimate result. I think Miller can work out, and in concert with Blake gives us a great PG unit. And also while I think this team has developed and changed, I also think McMillan is a great enough coach to realize this and adapt to the team and challenges he now has.

On your final illustrated issue, Durant? What do I care if Bill Simmons likes Durant? I think Durant is an emerging superstar. Good for the N.B.A. . I think N.B.A. scoring champion is optimistic but not impossible. Unless The Blazers are playing Oklahoma directly, what do I care about Durant? Blazer fans need to get over this Anti-Durant feeling. So we took Oden over Durant and Durant might become a superstar in this league. So might Oden as a center. But why should I feel threatened or upset at any positive press or media Durant might get or earn? Didn’t we always know Durant had the potential to be a superstar? Simmons saying that this could be a big year for Durant is nothing I’m going to hold against Simmons.
