10/24-25 Junk Drawer -- Attempt Deux

PrintHere we are on the night of the 24th, just 3(!) days away from the start of the NBA season. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to sleep on Monday night, in anticipation of the season opener. Everyone seems to be so tense at the start of this season, and I'm not sure why. Let's not forget that we still have one of the youngest rosters in the league (Dre obv. doesn't help this stat), and this is basically the same team that won 54 games last year. Also, Oden looks greatly improved. Yet every seems to be so down. I don't get it.
In any case, I am considering making the trip up from Corvallis on either Tuesday or Thursday night to go watch the game... Which game should I go to?

I dunno.
Both games will be great. The Houston one will be awesome since it’s the season opener and the whole playoffs thing. The Nuggets one will be awesome because it’s a division game and everyone hates the Nuggets. It’s a tough call. I’d say the Nuggets though.

The SEC is criminally overrated
an ugly, ugly 12-10 game is called a “defensive struggle”. Something is wrong when the so called number 2 team in the nation hasn’t scored an offensive touchdown in 2 straight games.

You can’t argue with the results— namely the SEC’s excellent record in bowl games, and even more so the amount of talent it graduates to the pros. The disparity speed on defense in the SEC compared to e.g. the Big-12 is dramatic.

There are definetely those who would have you believe the only good FB is in the SEC
and that’s ridiculous.
There’s no doubt in my mind, though, that top to bottom the best football conference in the country is the SEC. I think that in this particular year the Pac-10 is just as good— and the Sagarin ratings indicate that. Year in and year out, though, the SEC is the best.

OSU and WA are real fb teams,Ducks O is almost as good and they are much better on D and ST.USC is beat up and not a good road team,if Boise played in the pac 10 they would be almost as good as Cal.

Oregon State failed to capitalize in the red zone early in the game and it cost them. it’s not too often that a team can say that they “should have” won a game in the Coliseum, but this was one of them.

So much for slow starts, that Boise State loss is going to haunt Oregon.
The Beavers loss should help a lot, but a national championship bid is unlikely.

I don’t think one loss to a top team puts Oregon that far behind the unbeatens especially when you consider weak wins like Alabama has had recently. Or S.O.S. for a team like Iowa who only beat Penn St. who hasn’t beaten anyone.

Went to a get together at a friend’s place, pretended I was tired and went home.
I got a brunch/breakfast thing planned tomorrow at 9:30am, which kinda sucks, but it’ll be good for me. I’ll mainly just be counting down the minutes till the season starts.

Oh, and yesterday I got my first new cell phone in like 5 years. My old one wouldn’t let me make 3 phone calls without dying if it wasn’t plugged in.
I got a Samsung Intensity, and I’m telling you, it’s totally intense and in my face to the exxxtreme.
The flip out keyboard is awesome, since I do text (I hate hate hate talking on the phone, so my phone dying fast was a blessing often because it’s a nice excuse), and my old phone’s buttons were so worn out it took forever to send basic texts.
And that’s my new cell phone story.
I don't even know how to work some of the new cell phones that are out.
My mom got a new one a couple months ago and she just wanted a basic flip phone that is easy to use. The one she got isn’t so basic because neither me, my brother, or my sister in law could figure it out and we are all good with electronics and gadgets. Stupid phones!

I also played basketball for the first time in at LEAST over a year… it was a lot of fun, I hadn’t played in sooooo long.
I did better than I expected, but everything felt all uncoordinated and bad. I still got my inside game going, and I got big legs and can always get position inside. But my jumper… ooph, so stinky.
My jumper used to be very very good, but I didn’t shoot one ball the same all game it felt like. My form was awful. Of course, I hadn’t played in a real game for forever, and didn’t shoot around beforehand to get my rhythm back.
The biggest thing holding me back was I am out of shape, and since I already have athletic asthma, I was sucking wind really bad. Even started to black out a little bit. And when my wind is that bad, I don’t play smart. I react slow.
Even when I was in perfect shape my asthma got to me, but it was sooooo bad today.
I’m gonna play once a week now, so I’ll get my game back.
And that’s my pick up basketball game story.
I also twisted my ankle
It didn’t hurt at all during the game, but 2 hours later when I got home, it hurt baaad.
So lame.
My temper gets ferociously bad when my asthma kicks in. The loss of oxygen to my brain is the reason for every fight I got into in my sports days. I get angry that I can’t breathe, my brain doesn’t think straight because it can’t breathe, and then if I do something wrong or someone is dumb to me, I get much angrier than normal.
Today, I was mad at myself for being bad at basketball (nothing I could do about that, it’s been forever since I played), and when I twisted my ankle I was just pissed that I twisted my ankle.
I wish I had time to play 2 or 3 times a week.
Great fun, and a great way to stay in shape.
Right now I think I’d want to run for about a year before I even tried to play – so you’re way ahead of me.

It was a fullcourt game, which I don’t like even when I’m in shape. My asthma just limits me there.
It wasn’t a full-fullcourt, but the running up and down gets my lungs to shut up.
I really wanted to have at least a WEEK of daily shooting around and playing before I tried to play with strangers, but I thought “what the H, just play”. I was bad, but not anywhere close to the worst dude there, and I know I’ll get better again.

I think Harrington is a great value, but he possibly gives you what you already had— scoring and 3’s. Even though you’re getting the dude who will prolly end the season ranked overall the highest, you’re giving away your main rebounder and shotblocker.
I think Ray Allen will dip in production more, but I don’t see why you included him in the deal. He was ranked 13th last season, even with last year’s dip in production. I think Salmons will be good, but not do as well this year since he got most of his production as the best player for a really bad Kings team, and then on the Bulls while Deng was out.
Hmm… I’d say I wouldn’t have recommended the trade.

Half the the time people say that, it is something that takes a long time. In football, a team will be down 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, they’ll score once, and the announcer will say, “All of a sudden, they’re back in the game.”
Or when someone will say, “You graduate high school, go to college for four years, get your masters, then your doctorate, and all of a sudden you’re an expert.” 8-12 years is not sudden at all.

I always thought he was just some lazy slug. Turns out he had a ton of family problems, a mother who was a crack addict and probably prostitute to finance her addition, cousins who wanted all his money, and so on. The whole nine yards of how you imagine a totally dysfunctional support for a guy out of the projects. And his weight problems had something to do with medication he had to take at least initially. He know has a much-better working family himself, earned some money playing abroad, and was also trying to get his mother to finally be clean for good.
Dennis Rodman is the most unique player in NBA history, even more so than Muggsy Bogues.
That aside, though, the best comparison for DeJuan Blair is probably Paul Millsap, although a part of me finds the big guy to be a sane version of Danny Fortson. Yet, that’s basically the same thing.

Are people who say that watching games isn’t fun because they can’t stand close games or losses that shouldn’t have happened or whatever, and I think “wtz are you talking about? Calm the zach down and enjoy yourself!” that’s the point. Yeah, I leave the RG looking like someone drowned my mom and my puppy in the same bag after tough loses and go home and post that we should fire nate and trade outlaw but I don’t really mean it.
Yeah, I don't get that at all
I would have rather watched the U of O/UW game and have it go into triple overtime, than have them switch to another game half way through the 4th quarter. Blowouts are boring, close games are fun to watch, and losses just happen.
Fell asleep again and had some crazy dream sequences
Was driving around and around in a carriage together with 3 ladies (one was a petite with black hair, one was a tall elegant blonde that looked like nobody I remember, the other one also some blonde) and we were all in historic costumes, like rococo or baroque. I think we also strolled through a castle of that time with foyers and galleries before, but that wasn’t as memorable. The city looked like a mix of a city where I went to school, an alpine village with old massive stone houses, and some unknown and modern elements like bollards that we almost crashed into on each round . Very detailed. I remember a nice old cottage in the upper part of the city in a right turn that had the words New York carved and painted into the side and the driver couldn’t tell me why that was and I wanted to ask later. Sometimes we looked out for some fireworks or other theatrical shows going on at the shore of the lake that were hard to see in driving and we had no tickets for. We sometimes got attacked by small groups of civil guardians also in costume, and had to defend ourselves with odd things like salami cannons and salami hand grenades but also old one-shot pistols and just kicking the captain out of the carriage again. Not sure if he wanted to rob one of the ladies or we had committed a crime, we definitely felt that it was unfair to go after us and not like we had done something wrong. Completely weird, since I usually don’t remember dreams much less in so much detail.
Daylight saving time ends sooner in Europe than the US. Gained one our on you at the moment, which is nice.

Charlotte Bobcats guard Raja Bell is working under the assumption that he’ll simply rest and rehabilitate his torn wrist ligament, writes Rick Bonnell.
Surgery would keep him out as long as four months, but Bell remains optimistic that he could return in a few weeks without having to go the route of the surgery.
But the decision to have surgery may hinge largely on the assessment of his MRI by a hand specialist in Chicago, which is expected to come no sooner than Monday.
With Bell out, Stephen Graham and Flip Murray will be asked to pick up their games and fill the gap left by Bell; Graham on defense and Murray on the offensive end.

Their old manager is going through some massive personal changes (rapid weight loss), resulting in a different focus in life than blogging which is understandable.
Though the weird thing is that he came back recently after pretty much taking the offseason off and promised to take it back up.
Wes is also back on Mavs Moneyball, and I haven’t heard back from them yet. But a number of the (NBA) blogs are undergoing some changes.

It’s basically a huge ratings smash during the slow Summer months. Their finale is early Sept, right before the fall season starts.
Handbrake just takes videos and encodes them for other purposes
For example, if I want to encode a high def video down to a small size to fit on an ipod or Zune.
It does it quicker and with more quality options than the itunes or zune software.

Haven’t used the flip camera yet, but can’t imagine it’ss too different from any other HD format. I can check later.

Handbrake's not the right tool for you
Rivals.com is part of Yahoo, so I presume their video rules apply. Handbrake encodes to h.264 inside a container not supported by those rules.
Do you have Quicktime installed? That seems like the quickest way to encode down a high def video on a Mac. And it’s specifically supported by them.
Shoot, Quicktime is not my area
Make sure you have the full Quicktime software from apple, not just the quicktime player.
Assuming you have the whole thing and there’s no sign of how to compress, you may need to ask if anyone else around here has used it. Unfortunately, I’m typically encoding on Windows or Linux, which precludes much Quicktime work.
It’s a shame too. Handbrake could do what you want pretty nicely (possibly slowly though), if the video upload service supported it.

In one league, I came into today a fortunate 6-0 (I'm only 3rd in the league in total points)
With Flacco, Brandon Marshall, Kevin Smith, Baltimore D and John Carlson on byes, I was forced to play Shaun Hill (who got benched), Pierre Garcon, Tim Hightower, Oakland D and Kevin Boss. I also had Andre Johnson who got hurt and Frank Gore who was bad in his first game back.
With Santana Moss, Hightower and Boss still to play, I have a total of 25.30 points. I’m on track to destroy the league’s lowest point total this year of 62.

Two weeks ago it was a guy suddenly getting suspended, or a crappy defense going for 35 points. This week Leon Washington breaks his leg on the first play, and for some reason Smith is either not playing or gets no passes. It’s screwed up.

I think in FBB of all fantasy sports, the middle rounds are just a mosh of playres that are of similar value. Reaching for a few picks doesn’t kill you. I think Oden and Randolph will both be studly men with the rebounds and blocks.
