Are you serious Bill Simmons?

If anyone of you have read Bill Simmons NBA season preview, you may have noticed that once again he continues his love affair with Kevin Durant (hes good, but seriously the dudes obsessed with him), and has OKC finishing at 42-40 just missing the playoffs. After some gushing about KD, he talks about us. He says Portland is the "The 'You Thought We'd Take Another Leap, But Instead We Went Backward Because Expectations Were Too High, We Tinkered With Our Chemistry And Our Young Guys Tuned Out Their Coach' Team", and that we will completely fall apart. Just wanted to see what you all think of this. Heres his predictions for the west.

Western Conference
1. San Antonio, 64-18
2. L.A. Lakers, 63-19
3. Utah, 51-31
4. New Orleans, 48-34
5. Dallas, 46-36
6. L.A. Clippers, 45-37
7. Houston, 44-38
8. Denver, 44-38
9. Phoenix, 43-39
10. Zombies(OKC), 42-40
11. Portland, 41-41
12. Golden State, 28-54
13. Memphis, 24-58
14. Minnesota, 22-60
15. Sacramento, 15-67

Dude loves irking Potland

He hated on Oden like nobody else… I’m happy so far with how he’s turned out. I choose to give “The Sports Guy” no love or attention. He’s a douche.

Simmons is a talented and original sports humor writer.

Dario (below) is right on. Simmons is like the big brother who teases you about your freckles. The more you react, the more he teases you. Ignore him and he’ll eventually have no choice but to jump on the Blazer bandwagon. I’m sure he wants to anyway, but he’s having too much fun pulling our collective chain to do that.

The next time I read someone calling someone a douche I will personally go to the animal shelter and strangle every puppy in there. If you want to insult someone, go here and borrow some creativity, you fobbing, knotty-pated canker-blossom.

Simmons is awesome

Of course his prediction for Portland is ridiculous, but who cares? I have always been baffled by the phenomenon of fans being offended by sportswriters’ predictions. Isn’t Simmons entitled to think Portland will win 41 games? How is that even remotely offensive to Portland’s fans? He’s wrong as often as he’s right, and a lot of times you can tell by the complete lack of justification for some of his predictions – like this one. But it doesn’t hurt anything.

I would definitely pick the Clippers for the playoffs

If Blake Griffin has any impact, they ought to make it. They already have a good and balanced team all around him.

why because they got griffin now?

yeah but they def won’t have more wins than blazers this season

by portlandgiirl91 on Oct 24, 2009 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Compare this year's Clips to last year's.

Last Year……………………….This Year
Zach Randolph…………………Blake Griffin
Kaman injured………………….Kaman healthy
Baron Davis new to team
  and injured…………………….Davis slimmed-down, healthy, motivated
Eric Gordon rookie……………..Gordon in sophomore year
Mike Dunleavy in charge……….Hey, four outta five ain’t bad!

by MiledAnimal on Oct 24, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree Miled

The Clippers are a team to watch out for at the back end of the Western playoffs.

by jksnake99 on Oct 24, 2009 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

I think the Clips aren’t even really a sleeper for the playoffs… they have to be a favorite for the 7 or 8 seed. Thornton is the only thing holding them back. He is one of the most overrated players in the league. But if Camby and Kaman stay healthy, they will be a nice team this year. Baron will no doubt have a come back year, Gordon will be nasty, and Griffin will fit in seamlessly.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Oct 24, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Clips will still have to play pretty well to make the playoffs.
  • Top Dog: Lakers
  • Nipping at the Top Dog’s heels: Blazers, Spurs, Nuggets
  • In the race but trailing: Jazz, Mavericks, Hornets
  • One step ahead of Animal Control: Rockets, Suns, Clippers

That’s ten teams. One only of that last group will see playoff action, and all three teams have about the same chance in my view.

by MiledAnimal on Oct 24, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree again

and if I were a betting man, my money would be on the Rockets. The Clips have a shot though.

Speaking of Mike Dunleavy, he sounds like a lot better coach

by MiledAnimal on Oct 25, 2009 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is such a strange prediction you question his motives.

Is he just trying to get hits because he knows about Portland’s rabid ( and tech friendly / blog happy ) fan base? Is he just trying to be controversial? Is he still jealous of Roy ( admitted Boston fan )? Is he just really that bad?

Probably some combination of all of these questions.

All valid points

The evolution of Bill Simmons as a columnist has been disappointing. I really liked his early stuff, and his mailbags were gold. Then he got lazy, figured out a formula/cliches that would generate traffic, and now that’s his schtick. “Pantheon” guys, “insert fallen celebrity” teams, etc., he recycles the same dreck, but I will give him this – controversy sells, so if getting paid is his motive, he’s hit the jackpot. He’s a lot like a nationally syndicated, more talented Canzano.

re: canzano v. Simmons

Simmons is more talented, but he also does a lot that doesn’t just aim to provoke/promote controversy. I think Canzano basically just only tried to tug on your heart-strings/ stirs up controversy. It’s always either some sympathetic character or situation or a bunch of hyperbole. Simmons, on the other hand, is vastly enjoyable almost all the time I think he’s right on. He might not think the blazers will be 41-41, but I empathize where he’s coming from: make a bold pick, and if it turns out it turns out. He said himself that he had to make a few out there predictions, and I feel like the blazers are a pretty easy target. Every single other columnist or prognosticator picked the blazers to make another jump. What’s so wrong about going against the flow?

by MiledAnimal on Oct 24, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The idea that Simmons needs to manufacture controversy is preposterous

He’s the most widely read sportswriter on the planet. Does anyone honestly think he’s making a BS prediction so the tiny Portland market will react and click on his stuff?

I agree that his early stuff was better, and he’s a little complacent now, overly reliant on the same schtick, and not as funny as he used to be. But the Canzano comparison is laughable, to say the least.

The guy's analysis is just off.

And he’s arrogant. He called Orlando to get swept for example. He’s claiming 5’11", beat up, washed up AI will be resurrected.

He’s obviously an idiot if he predicts that Houston will get to the playoffs while Portland won’t (who’s their center these days?). 41 and 41 is just bat@#$@ crazy. Jazz over Denver? Nah. I have a hard time believing San Antonio is that much better because they acquired Jefferson. Tim Duncan also acquired another year’s worth of living and wear and tear.

People read Simmons? A lot of people listen to Rush too. Doesn’t mean they’re not fools.

See Tom's Snopes.com link above.

His famous “black quarterbacks” comment was a slam at the media, not a racist remark. It was also a slap at McNab’s on-field performance, and it happened to be accurate.

Annthefan dislikes Rush but at least she listens to him — and she didn’t say he’s a racist. Do you listen to him often enough to know who and what he is? Or do you just nod and pile-on when your friends slam him?

I can't believe that a site full of basketball fans

don’t seem to know that back in 2004, after the big melee in Detroit started by Ron Artest and the beer-throwing fan, Rush said that the NBA should be called the “Thug Basketball Association” and that the teams should be called “gangs” (then making a reference to the Crips and Bloods). If that’s not a racist statement, I don’t know what is. Here is the link:

Bill Simmons is beyond the point of driving pageviews

by writing something controversial. His readership is pretty saturated as is, being a constant link on the ESPN front page, so the idea that writing that mobilizing the Portland fan base has any real effect on him is pretty laughable.

He’s just trying to go out on a limb because he can and why not? He’s not writing as an expert analyst, his schtick is a “fan’s point of view”. In the end, he’s a guy that writes as an entertainer, not someone who covers the NBA as a reporter, so it’s not like we’re talking abotu “expert predictions” here.

by Royster on Oct 24, 2009 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some people I respect like Bill Simmons, but they like him mostly because he is outrageous.

I don’t find him fun, or funny, so I don’t click on pages that have things he wrote, if I can help it.

If you notice, he is strategically antagonizing any team that is likely to give him big hits.

The Lakers, not #1…

The Blazers, not making the playoffs…

The Nuggets, #8…

This stuff is comparable to running around a Kurdish town in a Saddam Hussein outfit to get attention. Who knows, maybe I’d do it if it made me rich?

We’ve regressed WHY????
Because Oden looks to be developing nicely?
Because we now have a solid PG rotation?Because Martell is healthy?
Because Rudy & Nic have a year of experience?
Because Roy and LMA are better prepared to lead this team?

Or Bill Simmons is a clown? I’ll go with that last option!

Don't waste your time on Mr. Simmons

He’s not worth taking seriously. Check your facts. Just take a look at his previews over the last two seasons for some memorable flops:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/071030
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/081028

Who can forget the Spurs-Bulls Finals of 08, or last year’s Cavs-Hornets?

He has an enormous corporate platform to shout out a largely (statistically) unfounded set of predictions. You need never take him seriously while he’s at ESPN.

Simmons isn't serious

and he openly admits he wrong more often that right. I like his writing.

I also like that he is picking against us. He started saying Roy would be no more than a 16-3-3 guy for his career, then said Aldridge would be no more than a role player. He’s been woefully wrong both times. And now he is slamming Oden, which only makes me smile because it means Oden has a shot at MVP this year.

by Norsktroll on Oct 24, 2009 3:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't get much less likely than that...

OKC should be thrilled with the 30 or so wins they will probably get this year, and Portland would be disappointed with 50. And they could be much farther apart than that.

Understand that he’s one of the more knowledgable NBA writers out there. Just because he’s not on board the Blazers bandwagon doesn’t make him a ‘douche’, or ‘idiot.’

He’s even coming around on the EPL—another sign that the guy appreciates sports.

by Samuelson on Oct 24, 2009 3:40 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

The points he makes about the Blazers are valid discussion points. How that translates to 41 wins and missing the playoffs isn't really understandable.

Even if there was absolutely no chemistry with Miller, he would still play better than Sergio or Bayless did last year. Oden won’t play worse either. Rudy and Nic and Bayless will play better too simply by experience. There is no reason why the Blazers should give up 13 more games unless there are a lot of injuries, and he didn’t talk about that. He is often funny, but increasingly making things up out of thin air.

by Norsktroll on Oct 24, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

41 wins is over the top

but Simmons does give a reason for backsliding: chemistry/locker room problems. And there is some basis for this: the minutes crunch combined with a shaky intention for acquiring Andre Miller and the possibility that Nate is in over his head.

by Blazin' on Oct 24, 2009 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

Simmons makes valid points, but vastly overestimates the potential impact. It would take one or more catastrophic injuries for 41 wins to be in play. Too much talent.

Good writer... but definitely doesn't like Portland..

And it’ll be good to prove him wrong. I’m from Boston (so is he), so for me he’s written some of the most right-on capture-the-feeling/mood pieces I’ve ever read.

But I don’t think his BB prediction knowledge is based on months of painstaking research (like ours is here at the Bedge), and I bet some babe from Portland broke up with him, that’s why he’s such a hater..

The only problem is, TONS of New Englanders treat his word as gospel, so getting those votes for 2 or 3 players on a team they never see there is tougher… Same problem I have with Cowterd… Sure, you want to distance yourself a bit from Portland, but to claim Oden was a bust last year? Phew, really early Colin…

But, that’s the (real, BTW, largely because of game start times) ‘East coast bias’ that Greg, in particular, and LaMarcus as well will have to overcome to get on the All-Star team this year…

Why does Bill Simmons hate Greg Oden?

Dont know that I like him as humorist but he is a joke

a rational guess like 52 or 56 wins would have gotten him no attention

Well..

Give him a little credit for being honest. He could have simply folded and sided with the “3rd or 4th in the western conference” crowd. He really believes Portland has some chemistry issues. His point that Miller & Roy will have a hard time co-existing is truthful. Miller himself has said he’s still adjusting. What I don’t agree with is this idea that as players get older, they’ll start tuning Nate out. I think that’s a blanket “I don’t watch many Blazer games” kind of statement.

Remember that Simmons is from Boston. Those folks don’t watch our games honestly. So he’s comparing the Blazers to every other young team that was “supposed to take the next step” but didn’t. Lots of young teams do this. They buy into their coach’s schemes early but as years go on and players come and go, things change. Players feel like they know what’s best. Some believe they know better than their own coach. What I think he’s missing is Nate’s relationship with this team. He can’t possibly understand how close it is from Boston.

Oh, and there’s no way in hell Portland is a .500 team next year. That was laughable. At the absolute worst I have them winning 48 games (6-7th seeed) and at best 56. I still think we’re better than the Nuggets but it’s really their division to lose instead of ours to win. I’m cautiously optimistic about this season but 41-41 is ludicrous.

Regarding Hedo Türkoğlu:

Look at the bright side, Blazers fans -- you dodged a bullet. He peaked statistically two years ago. He's allegedly 30 but could be closer to 32 or 33 for all we know. (Do you trust Turkish birth certificates? And isn't it weird that he played four years of pro ball in Turkey in the 1990s?)

.500 or sub .500, only if . . .

we have major injury problems !
That can be said about most professional sports teams !

It's GO time !

two things

we all know simmons loves kevin durant, and he’s crazy to think that the thunder can beat out the suns clippers or warriors for the eighth seed in the west. Otherwise I think he’s trying to get a rise out of the millions of blazer fans on the internet, he knows riling up blazer fans probably gets his colum read and commented by a lot of people

JUST FYI

Im pretty sure he is from boston but lives in LA now.. So im fairly certain he is still awake to watch blazer games if he chooses. Never seeing the team play isnt an option as to why he doesnt like/know about them. Its something else.

even if he does live in LA

he wouldnt bother to watch blazers games, apart from sportscenter highlights. he would get more consistent readers if he reports on lakers/celtics/cavs/knicks. so thats what i think he watches.

Bill Simmons jumped the shark awhile ago

I used to like to read him but he crossed the line from funny to annoying about a year ago for me.

That said, I do think Nate is going to need to loosen the reins a bit.

Simmons jumped the shark and screwed the pooch too

But gamblers might rejoice because maybe Simmons’ opinion will influence the oddsmakers in Vegas. Those who bet on the Blazers winning it all this year can thank Simmons for the increase on their returns.

Some like the way Simmons writes

But Simmons is much more like a Canzano than a Hollinger.

The latter’s success is predicated on accuracy and statistical prowess.

Both of the former are all about getting people to read their crap.

Oh, and Hollinger has the Blazers finishing second in the west.

by baduk on Oct 25, 2009 1:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, for one

Hollinger is a sports writer. Both Canzano and SImmons isn’t one. I think both will freely admit that they are not a sports writer..at least Simmons. He freely talks about his gimmick as a Boston fan guy rather than being a sports writer.

Yeah this guy is dumb. There’s no way the Blazers finish only 41-41. He must not know anything about basketball if he thinks OKC is going to have a better record then the Blazers.
