Junk Drawer - 10/24/09 - Go Ducks & Go Beavs
I have made an effort this year to make fewer FanPosts, FanShots, and Junk Drawers, but I saw a need that had to be filled. The beautiful and talented galacticlove made a Junk Drawer just ten hours ago, and it already has close to 800 comments. The hamster in Southern Oregon's computer will not be able to generate enough energy to read the Junk Drawer once it reaches 1,000 comments. For Southern Oregon's sake, I made this one.
Please talk about fantasy basketball in the other Junk Drawer and save this Junk Drawer for U of O and OSU games. They both should win handily. Sophia said on Facebook that both teams will lose today. She is wrong.
A quick reminder, Breast Cancer Awareness month is winding down. I recommend donating what you can to the American Cancer Society and/or BlazersEdge Night. (BlazersEdge night is not related, but figured it deserved a link.)
via www.cammyproductions.com (Warning, never ever, ever photo search for "breast cancer" when you mean to search for "breast cancer awareness.")

night and day junk is almost necessary these days

Yeah
Probably by Tuesday we won’t need two. I figured I should be proactive since the college football talk added to fantasy basketball talk would kill SO’s hamster.

But with the remark "Jazz matched offer". He will still be in the current version with that, since we did sign a FA.
The pick we used to trade up for Claver already has changed hands 3 times since then, from the Mavs to the Thunder to the Timberwolves.
I’m also thinking what I should do with Ruffin. He became a FA, then the Thunder signed him for a few days, then he signed in Spain. I think usually I gave the next team that signed a player, and only stated “became FA” when no other team signed him ever again.

As soon as that thing came down and I could scale it against the size of a man, I knew it couldn't lift a five year old.
When I was a kid my Mom’s boyfriend and I used to make homemade, mylar hot air balloons that were maybe a third the size of that one, and I could easily hold it down while we were filling it.

That's why it was silver.
Yes it was using some helium, but it was essentially a flying Jiffy Pop thing.
The silver casing heats the air inside, creating lift. Simply really.

black would be a better color for heating the air inside, shiny is reflective, and it was helium so it doesn't require heating to generate lift.

WOW! i think the blazers should have consulted with the scalpers before they set their new prices. i think they looked at the laker games and the playoff game and didnt factor in the economy. yeah last minute prices can go that high or higher but usually you can still always find a ticket for 30-40 bucks if you dont wait untill the last minute.

So, what do the rotations look like now that BARBO is goint to be the starting line-up?
Is Miller the first guy off of the bench? If so, does he come in with Webster or Rudy? How does Nate manage the rotations to keep a good balance of offense and defense?
One thing that sticks out to me is that I don’t think Miller, Rudy, Webster, Outlaw, Pryzbilla is a great unit. Too perimeter oriented on offense and not a superb defensive unit. I’d like to minimize the amount of time it’s on the floor. If both Roy and Aldridge are out of the game, I’d like to have Miller and Oden in together to give Oden some burn where he gets a lot of offensive touches.
Here’s a suggestion
1st Quarter
12:00 – 4:00 Blake, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, Oden
4:00 – 0:00 Miller, Fernandez, Roy, Aldridge, Pryzbilla
2nd Quarter
12:00 – 9:00 Miller, Fernandez, Webster, Aldridge, Pryzbilla
9:00 – 7:00 Miller, Fernandez, Webster, Outlaw, Przybilla
7:00 – 5:00 Miller, Fernandez, Webster, Outlaw, Oden
5:00 – 3:00 Miller, Roy, Webster, Outlaw, Oden
3:00 – 0:00 Miller, Roy, Batum/Outlaw, Aldridge, Oden
Repeat for the second half
MPG:
Roy 34
Aldridge 36
Miller 36-30
Batum 16-22
Blake 16-22
Oden 30
Pryzbilla 18
Webster 18
Fernandez 22
Outlaw 12-18

I wouldn't have a problem with that.
I haven’t seen any evidence that Webster adds something that the Blazers don’t already have. I can seem him being a solid player elsewhere, I just don’t see his value added for this team.

Rudy is the shooter Martell is with the added dimension of playmaking.
Only thing Martell can do to earn time is get a little better defensively.

the problem is that is we want defense, we go Nico, and if we want offense, we go Rudolfo. Martello doesn’t get the call in either situation.

Also, It'll be hard to tell where Martell really is this season
Until he shakes the rust off from his extended layoff. That may be past midseason, which could be advantageous if Batum struggles due to his extended Summer activities.
by Timmay! on Oct 24, 2009 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right. So, how many minutes should Webster get to start out the season?
I don’t know. I gave a healthy dose, in my proposed rotation, but I smaller amount seems defensible too.
by PoliSam on Oct 24, 2009 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My current guess is limited minutes for Martell
Probably 5-10 mins on average for the first quarter of the season, depending on the number of blowouts. That seems reasonable at the moment. He’ll be competing with a lot of players for those minutes, including a couple out of their natural position…
I was hoping he’d have his legs back, but it’s clear that he needs some more time to get back up to full strength, at least based on the reports (since I haven’t seen them play yet).
I’m not as down on Martell as most guys here, I suspect he’ll surprise everyone as his stamina returns. But if Batum solidifies his role and doesn’t stumble, Martell may end up trying to prove his worth with another team.

Apropros of nothing, I've just about finished the effects pedal board for my guitar rig
It took a while because I had to to sell some other stuff (tough in this economy unless you’re just giving stuff away) to get the “fun money” (as my wife calls it) to buy my new pedals. Here are the last two pedals in the rig: a tap-tempo tremolo

and a pretty sweet reverb pedal

It was missing the battery door, and the main switch button was missing, so it was just an exposed switch. It finally started getting so crackly that it wasn’t worth hooking up anymore. I’m okay though my amp doesn’t need an overdrive pedal.

It’s a mark IIC+. It is so loud that it will peel your face off. Literally. Years ago I was playing a show at the Tabor Theater, the sound guy wanted to mike up everything. I told him, you’re not gonna have to mike this amp. He didn’t believe me, so I turned it up to 7 and drowned out his whole system. He made me turn it down and miked everything else.

by Montavilla Steve on Oct 24, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah they're one of my favorite bands.
The RC-20xl is one of the funnest pedals anywhere. You could do a whole album, or score a whole film with just that, a guitar, a decent amp, some reverb, and a delay pedal.
by dario argento on Oct 24, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've got a boss gt-50, which I think allows for a 1 second delay, and tiny loops. Would like to check out one of those loop stations, though.
I love building up crazy layers. At one point in my studio, I had one output going from the gt-50 to my amp(A fender Cyber-twin at the time), and the other was going to my Korg electribe. I would use the guitar as my synth trigger on the electribe and manipulate with the arpeggiator pad. Throw an autopan on the twin amp, and a pan on my monitors, and it’s time to lose your mind.

That does sound like some pretty fun mayhem
I would definitely recommend the Boss RC-20. I picked mine up on ebay for 175 (from a guy that looked trustworthy but had low feedback). I haven’t played the boomerang, but I’ve heard it’s pretty sweet. The Jam man is supposed to be good too (the blue thing that looks alot like the RC-20), but it’s much more expensive (though I don’t know how much you’d want to spend on a pedal).
by Montavilla Steve on Oct 24, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
the gt-50 seems to add a lot of signal noise. One of those things where you have to really overcompress (with my setup anyway) to keep it from bleeding out during the quiet parts.
Which sucks because it basically sucks the life out of the tone. It sounded great when I played it in the store but with the boogie, not so much.

I've got the 20
and it suits me just just fine. The 2 was a little too tough to work with on the fly (or I’m just not talented enough). And the 50 was out of my price-range and wouldn’t bit onto my existing board. I think I saw Imogen Heap use one of these (the RC-50) for recording and singing/playing over her own loops live, but it was tough to see in the video recording…

Well, I like the grail
But, it only has a couple settings (albeit good ones) and it’s waaaay too noisy in my signal chain. I’ve heard they corrected that noise issue in the Holier/Holiest grails, but by then I was using a verbzilla and those other two pedals are fairly expensive. The verbzilla’s not perfect, but works well enough, and if the Cathedral had never come out, I’d probably still be happy with it.
My rig (since you asked, and I’m pretty happy with it!):
guitar: Tele or Japanese 335 copy w/ Lollars
Fx: Dirty Beaver (a take on the Ram’s Head Big Muff) → Keeley BD-2 → Tim → Shape Shifter → Cathedral → DD-20 → RC-20
Into either: 1972 Traynor or a Marshall TMB or a Dual Showman

Mind if I complain about work
Just before I left a coworker got a call to check a ticket status from yesterday. He said, “A tech picked it up but didn’t leave any notes, so I don’t know what he did. I’ll have to call him and probably call out another tech.” Then he repeated that a bunch, said “I don’t know, there are no notes on the ticket, I have to call the tech.” He said the “no notes need to call” thing a bunch again then said, “I’ll have to call out a tech for this.”
The other person hung up and then called right back and got another coworker who put the lady on speakerphone. She said, “I need to talk to a supervisor, I just spoke to Billy and he said no tech picked up our ticket from yesterday and he said he won’t call anyone out today.”

I am making a spreadsheet adding up the total stats of each team in our FBB league
I couldn’t figure out how to tell what I’m good and what I’m not, so I figured I’d just waste a bunch of time tabulating last year’s results as a way to compare teams against each other. Obviously teams with rookies on them won’t be entirely accurate, but it’s better than nothing.
If you want a copy, send me an email. I’m about halfway done.

Lee’s boards won’t carry you enough.. otherwise.. yeah.. whatever.. you have a good team.. although I think your bench is weak.. I would lay money that you could find 1-2 people who will play better for most of the season than a few of your guys…

by Roybot on Oct 24, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
an msi notebook,
never heard of it before. the salesman was good. it’s pretty nice though. much better than my old one. hence my weekend presence in the JD.
and i don’t cry. my tear ducts don’t work so good.
by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've never heard of it either.
I really need a new smallerish one that I can take to school but they are so damn expensive. I don’t want to spend that much on one when I would probably use my old one as well.
by Roybot on Oct 24, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah.
my old one was 5 years old and quite slow. i went in to frys because they had a laptop on ad for 350. but then the salesman told me he didn’t think that would be much better than what i had, so he recommended this MSI. it was a little more than what I wanted to spend, but not much. was still under 500. small, lightweight, nice screen.
by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mine's about 5 years old as well and has gotten pretty slow.
That’s a pretty good price. Most of the ones I have looked at online are more than that. Maybe I will just steal one.
by Roybot on Oct 24, 2009 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
free is a good price.
even though it was more than i wanted to spend, i think after doing more looking around, i would have found what i wanted to spend was unrealistic for a decent machine.

Kevin Love's return will help.
but I think i’m spread out enough with the rebounds that i’ll be ok there, but maybe not a consistant category win. Just gotta hope Lee can average close to 10. i’m curious to see how i’ll do with points and assists.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
points and assist could be variable ones for you
you have a lot of non-scoring types on your team.. and not a ton of true distributors..
3ptm and steals and fg% should be gold

You should check out the cdc's site for the swine flu. The top half of the page is all Pie charts, and history. You have to go half way down to find out what the symptoms are.
I understand being thorough, but you’d think the symptoms are the most important factor. They determine whether you need to read the rest of the page…
