Junk Drawer - 10/24/09 - Go Ducks & Go Beavs

I have made an effort this year to make fewer FanPosts, FanShots, and Junk Drawers, but I saw a need that had to be filled.  The beautiful and talented galacticlove made a Junk Drawer just ten hours ago, and it already has close to 800 comments.  The hamster in Southern Oregon's computer will not be able to generate enough energy to read the Junk Drawer once it reaches 1,000 comments.  For Southern Oregon's sake, I made this one.

Please talk about fantasy basketball in the other Junk Drawer and save this Junk Drawer for U of O and OSU games.  They both should win handily.  Sophia said on Facebook that both teams will lose today.  She is wrong.

A quick reminder, Breast Cancer Awareness month is winding down.  I recommend donating what you can to the American Cancer Society and/or BlazersEdge Night.  (BlazersEdge night is not related, but figured it deserved a link.)

Yeah

Probably by Tuesday we won’t need two. I figured I should be proactive since the college football talk added to fantasy basketball talk would kill SO’s hamster.

But with the remark "Jazz matched offer". He will still be in the current version with that, since we did sign a FA.

The pick we used to trade up for Claver already has changed hands 3 times since then, from the Mavs to the Thunder to the Timberwolves.

I’m also thinking what I should do with Ruffin. He became a FA, then the Thunder signed him for a few days, then he signed in Spain. I think usually I gave the next team that signed a player, and only stated “became FA” when no other team signed him ever again.

So, what do the rotations look like now that BARBO is goint to be the starting line-up?

Is Miller the first guy off of the bench? If so, does he come in with Webster or Rudy? How does Nate manage the rotations to keep a good balance of offense and defense?

One thing that sticks out to me is that I don’t think Miller, Rudy, Webster, Outlaw, Pryzbilla is a great unit. Too perimeter oriented on offense and not a superb defensive unit. I’d like to minimize the amount of time it’s on the floor. If both Roy and Aldridge are out of the game, I’d like to have Miller and Oden in together to give Oden some burn where he gets a lot of offensive touches.

Here’s a suggestion

1st Quarter

12:00 – 4:00 Blake, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, Oden

4:00 – 0:00 Miller, Fernandez, Roy, Aldridge, Pryzbilla

2nd Quarter

12:00 – 9:00 Miller, Fernandez, Webster, Aldridge, Pryzbilla

9:00 – 7:00 Miller, Fernandez, Webster, Outlaw, Przybilla

7:00 – 5:00 Miller, Fernandez, Webster, Outlaw, Oden

5:00 – 3:00 Miller, Roy, Webster, Outlaw, Oden

3:00 – 0:00 Miller, Roy, Batum/Outlaw, Aldridge, Oden

Repeat for the second half

MPG:

Roy 34
Aldridge 36
Miller 36-30
Batum 16-22
Blake 16-22
Oden 30
Pryzbilla 18
Webster 18
Fernandez 22
Outlaw 12-18

I wouldn't have a problem with that.

I haven’t seen any evidence that Webster adds something that the Blazers don’t already have. I can seem him being a solid player elsewhere, I just don’t see his value added for this team.

Rudy is the shooter Martell is with the added dimension of playmaking.
Only thing Martell can do to earn time is get a little better defensively.

Also, It'll be hard to tell where Martell really is this season

Until he shakes the rust off from his extended layoff. That may be past midseason, which could be advantageous if Batum struggles due to his extended Summer activities.

by Timmay! on Oct 24, 2009 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Right. So, how many minutes should Webster get to start out the season?

I don’t know. I gave a healthy dose, in my proposed rotation, but I smaller amount seems defensible too.

by PoliSam on Oct 24, 2009 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

My current guess is limited minutes for Martell

Probably 5-10 mins on average for the first quarter of the season, depending on the number of blowouts. That seems reasonable at the moment. He’ll be competing with a lot of players for those minutes, including a couple out of their natural position…

I was hoping he’d have his legs back, but it’s clear that he needs some more time to get back up to full strength, at least based on the reports (since I haven’t seen them play yet).

I’m not as down on Martell as most guys here, I suspect he’ll surprise everyone as his stamina returns. But if Batum solidifies his role and doesn’t stumble, Martell may end up trying to prove his worth with another team.

by Timmay! on Oct 24, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

yup. Rudy and Dre need to be our big guns off the bench.

If no trades happen, that should be our playoff rotation as well, with J ho, Marty, and Trout getting spot minutes.

Apropros of nothing, I've just about finished the effects pedal board for my guitar rig

It took a while because I had to to sell some other stuff (tough in this economy unless you’re just giving stuff away) to get the “fun money” (as my wife calls it) to buy my new pedals. Here are the last two pedals in the rig: a tap-tempo tremolo

and a pretty sweet reverb pedal

You didn’t ask, but I had to share the good news with someone…

I haven't used that thing in years, it was pretty beat up. It was actually the green one with the black writing.

It was missing the battery door, and the main switch button was missing, so it was just an exposed switch. It finally started getting so crackly that it wasn’t worth hooking up anymore. I’m okay though my amp doesn’t need an overdrive pedal.

They’re totally behind some of my recent song writing and gear acquisition. I got to see them at musicfest NW, and they were fantastic. I went out and bought an RC-20XL and started using it after seeing them on “Austin City Limits”.

by Montavilla Steve on Oct 24, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah they're one of my favorite bands.

The RC-20xl is one of the funnest pedals anywhere. You could do a whole album, or score a whole film with just that, a guitar, a decent amp, some reverb, and a delay pedal.

by dario argento on Oct 24, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I've got a boss gt-50, which I think allows for a 1 second delay, and tiny loops. Would like to check out one of those loop stations, though.

I love building up crazy layers. At one point in my studio, I had one output going from the gt-50 to my amp(A fender Cyber-twin at the time), and the other was going to my Korg electribe. I would use the guitar as my synth trigger on the electribe and manipulate with the arpeggiator pad. Throw an autopan on the twin amp, and a pan on my monitors, and it’s time to lose your mind.

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

by Tyler Durrden on Oct 24, 2009 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

That does sound like some pretty fun mayhem

I would definitely recommend the Boss RC-20. I picked mine up on ebay for 175 (from a guy that looked trustworthy but had low feedback). I haven’t played the boomerang, but I’ve heard it’s pretty sweet. The Jam man is supposed to be good too (the blue thing that looks alot like the RC-20), but it’s much more expensive (though I don’t know how much you’d want to spend on a pedal).

by Montavilla Steve on Oct 24, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

the gt-50 seems to add a lot of signal noise. One of those things where you have to really overcompress (with my setup anyway) to keep it from bleeding out during the quiet parts.

Which sucks because it basically sucks the life out of the tone. It sounded great when I played it in the store but with the boogie, not so much.

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

by Tyler Durrden on Oct 24, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, I have a Korg AX300

that I use when I need to go into headphones for a practice. It has more effects on it than I would ever use live, but is good for brainstorming. It also has way too much noise for use live (if you’re ever quite during your songs).

by Tyler Durrden on Oct 24, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I've got the 20

and it suits me just just fine. The 2 was a little too tough to work with on the fly (or I’m just not talented enough). And the 50 was out of my price-range and wouldn’t bit onto my existing board. I think I saw Imogen Heap use one of these (the RC-50) for recording and singing/playing over her own loops live, but it was tough to see in the video recording…

by Montavilla Steve on Oct 24, 2009 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I like the grail

But, it only has a couple settings (albeit good ones) and it’s waaaay too noisy in my signal chain. I’ve heard they corrected that noise issue in the Holier/Holiest grails, but by then I was using a verbzilla and those other two pedals are fairly expensive. The verbzilla’s not perfect, but works well enough, and if the Cathedral had never come out, I’d probably still be happy with it.
My rig (since you asked, and I’m pretty happy with it!):
guitar: Tele or Japanese 335 copy w/ Lollars
Fx: Dirty Beaver (a take on the Ram’s Head Big Muff) → Keeley BD-2 → Tim → Shape Shifter → Cathedral → DD-20 → RC-20
Into either: 1972 Traynor or a Marshall TMB or a Dual Showman

My problem is my starter is Rose, so I don’t get much three point shooting from my point guards.

I am making a spreadsheet adding up the total stats of each team in our FBB league

I couldn’t figure out how to tell what I’m good and what I’m not, so I figured I’d just waste a bunch of time tabulating last year’s results as a way to compare teams against each other. Obviously teams with rookies on them won’t be entirely accurate, but it’s better than nothing.

If you want a copy, send me an email. I’m about halfway done.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

O'Neal and Love going in and out could hurt you

Lee’s boards won’t carry you enough.. otherwise.. yeah.. whatever.. you have a good team.. although I think your bench is weak.. I would lay money that you could find 1-2 people who will play better for most of the season than a few of your guys…

by galacticlove on Oct 24, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

i'm not married to my bench guys.

i was mostly looking for all around type fill in players (except House, he’s just for 3’s). but after i see how the first few weeks play out, i’ll probably start looking to make a move.

by Roybot on Oct 24, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

an msi notebook,

never heard of it before. the salesman was good. it’s pretty nice though. much better than my old one. hence my weekend presence in the JD.

and i don’t cry. my tear ducts don’t work so good.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I've never heard of it either.

I really need a new smallerish one that I can take to school but they are so damn expensive. I don’t want to spend that much on one when I would probably use my old one as well.

by Roybot on Oct 24, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah.

my old one was 5 years old and quite slow. i went in to frys because they had a laptop on ad for 350. but then the salesman told me he didn’t think that would be much better than what i had, so he recommended this MSI. it was a little more than what I wanted to spend, but not much. was still under 500. small, lightweight, nice screen.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Mine's about 5 years old as well and has gotten pretty slow.

That’s a pretty good price. Most of the ones I have looked at online are more than that. Maybe I will just steal one.

by Roybot on Oct 24, 2009 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

free is a good price.

even though it was more than i wanted to spend, i think after doing more looking around, i would have found what i wanted to spend was unrealistic for a decent machine.

by galacticlove on Oct 24, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Kevin Love's return will help.

but I think i’m spread out enough with the rebounds that i’ll be ok there, but maybe not a consistant category win. Just gotta hope Lee can average close to 10. i’m curious to see how i’ll do with points and assists.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 24, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

points and assist could be variable ones for you

you have a lot of non-scoring types on your team.. and not a ton of true distributors..

3ptm and steals and fg% should be gold

Trade value is the price at which an asset (here an NBA player) would trade in a competitive Walrasian auction setting. Trade value is often used interchangeably with open market value, fair value or fair market value, although these terms have distinct definitions in different standards, and may differ in some circumstances.

You might want to add something about fur trading as an example.

Ok, spreadsheet is done. Let me know if you want it.

The teams with rookies on them are obviously harder to judge, and the stats are from last season, but there’s some interesting info.

Teams that look surprisingly good:
Prez (dominant 1st place in 3 categories)
Hardwood Mourning looks really good all around

Teams that look surprisingly bad:
Timblanasian – pretty much bad in everything (with a rookie + Arenas not included)
Travis’ Diener: only looks good in two categories (with one rookie not included)

So I was just up at mount tabor, and saw something super creepy.

We were walking the dogs, up at the top of the hill and a little ways away, a father was watching his daughter’s play around a tree. The girls looked like they were about 6 and 8 years old. From quite a ways away, a man in his late twenties I’m guessing started walking towards them, with a big smile on his face. He was approaching very slowly, and the smile looked kind of crazy. So he walked right up to them and said something, I couldn’t hear what because I was watching the whole thing from a distance, but immediately the father told his daughter’s that they had to leave. They started walking away, and the younger man followed for about 50 yards, slowly, and eventually stopped and gave up. I don’t have any idea what actually happened, but I didn’t get the impression the young man was pure of thought….

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

So, you're going to be banished to a desert island ( with electricity, a TV, and a DVD player ) and can only take 5 movies. What are they? Here are mine which haven't changed for a while.

1. Lord of the Rings trilogy. ( I count this as one movie )
2. Casablanca
3. The Big Lebowski
4.Dawn of the Dead ( the original Romero masterpiece, not the remake. I like the remake, but it has nothing on the original )
5. Blade Runner

by dario argento on Oct 24, 2009 4:36 PM PDT reply actions

My favorite 5 movies are different than movies I can watch over and over and over like this list.

2 of my favorites that don’t make the desert island list are “Alien”, and “The Descent.”

by dario argento on Oct 24, 2009 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Interesting

I can’t think of any movie that is one of my favorites that doesn’t have rewatchability for me.

Shawshank is in my top five, but it leaps to number one with rewatchability factored in.

so add TV Shows in…

you’re adding 6 hours of movie watching by including the whole trilogy, a crucial bonus in this scenario.

by Magnum on Oct 24, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

here's mine

1. Original star wars trilogy
2. Raising Arizona
3. Apocalypse Now(Original cut, not Redux)
4. tossup between Forrest Gump and Castaway
5. Pulp Fiction or Taxi Driver or Goodfellas

There’s my top 5/8

I'm here to brag and gush and self-promote ... as usual.

My send CD was listed on iTunes last night.
I know that might now sound like much, but it is a fairly big accomplishment for a total slacker like me.

also just curious how you got your music on itunes

I did a huge project my senior year for a musician and I want to know which way you got your music on there.

by Starvin' Marvin on Oct 24, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions

It took a ton of doing.

Basically, I went through a Portland-based CD/digital music distributor called CDBaby.com
you have to jump through a bunch of hoops, but in the end they are good people and help a lot. Took some money and a lot of patience and persistence … both not my strong suits.

Check out my records on the CDbaby site here:

but this is the best link I found. It’s only listed by song, but if you click on the black CD with the red octopus on it, it will take yuo to the whole record:

what kind of cut do you get from an album sale on itunes?

by Starvin' Marvin on Oct 24, 2009 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

CDbaby actually gives the best cut around.

But it all depends on where they sell it.
On iTunes, I think I get something like 40% … but honestly, I can’t remember exactly. Lets just say I’m not paying rent with my music sales.

Your biography on iTunes reads funny. Not exactly like the road to success, but makes it more lovable :)

“…And their live show is as unstructured as the band itself. To maintain a level of spontaneity, a portion of their material is written a few hours before the actual performance.”

I met the writer for an early online music magazine in a Kinkos in Seattle 10 years ago, gave him one of my early records, and the dude wrote it up. Now that 5 minute interview is everywhere and that record is in my brother’s basement in SW Portland in two cardboard boxes.

Can’t say I agree with Chris’ take on the Blazers, but the Memphis line about Z-bo’s total lack of defense is too funny.

“Their top six (Gay, Mayo, Iverson, Gasol, Randolph, Conley) will certainly put up some points. But will they stop anybody at the other end? Hasheem Thabeet might get 50 blocks alone from picking up the guy who just dusted Zach.”

SC gets up for the big games.

I really hope the games start streaming on Blazers.com soon.

If I had to term the present situation, it would have to be a series of unfortunate events.

yep exactly right

their road losses were to:

OSU twice, UDub, UCLA, Oregon, and Cal.

only one of those teams were ranked at the time

I like Oregon's chances.

O’s D and special teams have been ripping it up this season.

I think the next question is

How many minutes will Greg average this year? He seems to have fouls under control and the conditioning to play 30/game, but will Nate do that when he’s got Joel?

key to beating USC = being able to throw the ball

unfortunately I don’t think any Oregon fans have any faith in Masoli’s ability to throw the ball

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
