Well worth a read. Oden, Blake will start. Przy buying into being a top flight backup - thinks Miller will do the same. Brandon challenging second unit to try and be game-changing. Awesome stuff.

A couple years down the line, I bet Brandon Roy and Andre Miller part ways on less than friendly terms.
"I’ve sat back and thought about this, and talked about this with my friends,’’ Roy said. "Everyone thinks the sacrifice is going to have to come from me and LaMarcus. And yeah, it is.

"But an even bigger sacrifice is going to have to come from Andre and Joel,’’ Roy said. "Say Joel comes off the bench. Does he relax and say this is Greg’s team, that Greg is the future, just go ahead Greg? Or does he say I’m gonna push myself everyday to make sure Greg is great and to make sure that when I come in the game I’m even better?

"And does Andre say OK, I will come off the bench and make sure this is the best second lineup in the NBA? Or is he going to say, Steve is starting, I’m going to relax?’’

"But it only fits if they want it to fit,’’ Roy said. "They can make it a great second lineup. If that’s the bench lineup, they can make it great. Andre has to make that sacrifice and say, ‘I’m going to make this my lineup. We’re going to be ready every time. I don’t care if the starters come out and get behind by 20, we’re going to come out and put our mark on the game.’’’

Knowing Joel Przybilla, the transition for him from being a starter to a backup should be an easy move. Yet, from what we know of Andre Miller as an individual who’s got a strong sense of self, the tone Brandon Roy takes in making these comments can’t please him.

In the final sentence of that third paragraph, it’s almost as if Roy is openly questioning Miller’s work ethic and ability to be a professional. Whether or not Miller takes that lack of faith in stride, is irked by the snide remarks but uses it as ammunition, or decides to slack off due to disdain toward his star teammate is unknown to us.

My prediction is that Miller will do as he’s done in the past by playing with a chip on his shoulder in an attempt to reclaim his past glory, vindicate himself, and figuratively stick it to the haters.

Now, maybe I’m reading too much into this and Roy’s relationship with Miller is that cordial co-workers. Then again, animosity may very well be brewing underneath the surface. Who, however, knows if it’ll lie dormant, slowly bubble over in an unthreatening flow, or even burst uproariously like a volcanic eruption?

Truth be told, none of us know the answer—yet.

I´d take a different look at this topic.

The Blazers simply talk openly about these things. People could consider it naif, because when you say what you think there´s a problem. But the Blazers organization has learnt that silence is a worse way sometimes. Now they have a group of very good people in their roster and they can take advantage of it. These guys know each other, want to work together, and have good relationships. It won´t be easy to unbalance team chemistry, if anyone try. Sergio was the most dangerous guy in this regard, and the Blazers found a solution for him.

Having open communication is indeed paramount, since bottling up frustration can frequently ...

lead to a combustible environment — such as what happened with Rajon Rondo last season with the “Big Three” — and that outburst can create quite the mess.

Yet, even though I’m glad that these guys don’t lie to themselves and others by pretending everything regarding on-court chemistry is peachy with Brandon Roy and Andre Miller not clicking as teammates on the hardwood, I’m not sure if this back-and-forth game that they’ve playing with media outlets — as Miller used a national forum by talking questions from columnist Marc Spears, while Roy stuck close to home by divulging bits of information to local reporter Jason Quick — is a healthy way to handle this delicate issue.

Yet, before I go any further, let me make one thing abundantly clear here: Roy and Miller don’t have to be all buddy-buddy and crap off the court. That aside, however, their on-court working relationship as coworkers seems to have taken some bumps in the road. That, without question, must somehow be smoothed out before the season more than a few weeks into it; otherwise, the pressure building up against Kevin Pritchard’s patchwork job at roster construction might not just spring a leak, but rather blow a gasket altogether.

While I'm here

I think this is an interesting issue to be broaching so early in the Roy-Miller relationship. There were always questions about their ability to fit together on court, with Brandon apparently recognising and accepting this at an early stage.

I agree that off-court chemistry is over emphasised. Lebron and Shaq yucking it up taking photos and messing around before and during the game does not make them ‘great leaders’ as the national media (read: ESPN) would have you believe. However, I think were animosity to develop between Brandon and Andre off the court because of this type of back and forth in the media then it could certainly affect their chances at being effective together on court. Everyone being buddy-buddy is not necessary for a team to function but on court chemistry does require willingness to figure out how they best fit together. This is why many teams with two ‘alpha’ players often breakup despite there being no good reason in terms of production on the court. Will definitely be an interesting story to follow…

Yeah, Brandon Roy and Andre Miller don't have to be friends to succeed alongside each ...

other; however, if hostility or resentment comes between them, it could create a divide in their on-court relationship. The thing Roy and Miller must recognize is that it’s not about being pals, but rather them having a cohesive relationship regarding work-related matters. At this point in time, though, they’re seemingly on entirely different pages. Yet, there’s still time to get back on the right track.

I think for Andre Miller

The fact that the Blazers do talk openly about these things, even to the media, is troubling. His behavior to date indicates that he does not trust the media to the point where he went to a national source to air his early grievances with local sources and their coverage of him.

Nothing in that history makes me think he will appreciate the fact that Brandon is talking to the same reporter who ‘outed’ Miller for failing the conditioning test about what Miller will need to do and sacrifices he will have to make. Also, it appears as though this has been released before Brandon has instigated the plan to talk with his teammates – I don’t think Miller will appreciate that at all. He also talks in absolutes without mention of Andre perhaps earning the starting role which gives credence to early rumblings about how Roy committed to Blake early in the process due to the ‘comfort’ factor.

I love the content of this piece for the most part and truly appreciate the access we get through having a great beat write like Jason Quick but for me the statements made by Brandon are both encouraging and troubling. That he wants to take a leadership role and talk the the team proactively before the season is great. However, having this aired in the media and the specific comments addressing Millers role on the team seem more likely to create a rift between the two than encourage any positive action. Nobody should want that, least of all Brandon.

Right, off-court chemistry means nothing.

For example, Travis Outlaw — who’s known for being all palsy-walsy and crap with both Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge — is a complete joke out on the court no matter his camaraderie.

Regarding Roy and Andre Miller, it’s got nothing to do with them being friends; rather, it’s about them having a sturdy working relationship. Co-workers can successfully accomplish a task together without forging a friendship and being fairly apathetic on a personal level, but them having contempt for each other can cause turmoil.

The thing y’all must take into account, however, is that Roy and Miller have tension between them due to their on-court fit — or lack thereof, as is the case here — being the crux of all their problems. If they can solve their difficultly meshing on the hardwood, then everything else will fall into place. They don’t need group therapy with some half-witted sports psychologist, since what would help them the most is to have a coach who can maximize their indvidual skill sets in tandem as a functioning backcourt.

Here's the big question
“I’ve sat back and thought about this, and talked about this with my friends,’’ Roy said. "Everyone thinks the sacrifice is going to have to come from me and LaMarcus. And yeah, it is.

What does he mean by, “Yeah, it is”?

If he means cutting PT to 30-32 mpg, and he’s going to stand up and say Nate’s doing that and he’s on board with, that’s going to have a real impact on calling on other people to make sacrifices, too. If the sacrifice he is making is, “I’m going to take less shots,” guys will think, “Yeah, right, I’ll believe it when I see it.”

If they see him making real, measurable sacrifices, like lower PT, they are a lot more likely to buy in to his leadership.

But I don’t see this as a slam on Andre. This is an honest acknowledgement that Andre is being asked to make a sacrifice, rather than pretending that Andre doesn’t deserve to start. Andre does deserve to start, it’s just that, at this point, Nate (and Brandon) don’t believe that is the best thing for the team. It is a sacrifice, and it would be worse to pretend it isn’t.

He’s also saying that second unit is Andre’s to run. And he’s making the same call to Joel, who everyone knows is seen as a pro’s pro, putting Andre in the same category as Joel. I don’t see these as snide remarks.

I can tell you how to make an Excel spreadsheet that proves Portland wins 62 games this year.

"Hopefully Greg has a great year, and if I have to come off the bench the whole year then I have to take advantage of it. The thing is, I don’t think there are many backup centers in the league who are better than me. So I think I can thrive off this role.’’

this just shows yet again that if we pay him, he will stay.

I really hope the games start streaming on Blazers.com soon.

If I had to term the present situation, it would have to be a series of unfortunate events.

I'm not worried about Andre....

He’s been in the league long enough.. He’s well paid, and smart enough to know that if he wants a ring, this is his best opportunity. I think he wants to win, and he wants respect. Both of which he will get if he helps this team win. Blake may start, but I’m sure ‘Dre will be getting the lions share of the PG minutes when we get deeper into the season and the playoffs. He’s just….better.

Whether Andre Miller loves, hates, or is indifferent toward the goings-on around him, I do think that ...

he’s a true professional who’ll tolerate any negative feelings that the local media or teammates may have for him. Miller seems like a guy who’ll internalize any bitterness he might have at the time — because it’s for the good of the team — and, when it’s all said and done, will let it all out after his job is done. The way stuff ended in Philadelphia and Los Angeles would indicate that to be the case, since he didn’t vent any of his pent-up frustration until he was off the proverbial clock like a loyal, hard-working employee. That, folks, is the sign of a true company man.

I like this quote from Przy
"Andre wants to win. He has the same mentality I do,’’ Przybilla said. "He understands what Coach wants and what the team needs from him to win. Seriously. I have never heard him say one negative thing, ever. It’s like Nate I and were saying the other day: We put him in for Sergio, and we got Juwan for Channing, and we got Martell back from injury. There’s no way we shouldn’t be better.’’

I get the paper, so I don't care!

Ouch

Wonder how Channing feels about “We got Juwan for Channing” being perceived as an upgrade. I’m not necessarily saying it isn’t…just saying that before Howard got here, I thought him totally washed up.

As much as

I love channing the guy, I think Juwan the the player is an upgrade for this team.

I agree

I think Joel was more talking about how they fill their role, and not so much who’s a better player.
