JD 10-22-09, Part II This is the Way the World Ends
Suppose, just like today's JD, the world will soon turn the pages on its final chapter. In this second of today's JD's, we'll explore, as an homage to a dying JD, the end of the world. First Let's examine how this end will come:
Now, to face this end, suppose you can only have one tool to start--like the begging of Red Dawn, you're forced into nature with little preparation. What would be the One Thing you would bring with you to this End of the World Party?

League pass broadband
http://www.nba.com/leaguepass/online.html
http://leaguepasssupport.nba.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=7801
It sounds like the league has finally learned people would prefer to watch their favorite teams, and the whole 40 games per week thing does not work?
I’d much rather take the discount and only watch the games for 7 teams. That does mean I can see any games those 7 teams are in though, correct? (I might watch a grand total of 2-5 non-blazer games, but I think those contests would likely be on national TV. (Things like cavs-lakers)
Will playoff games be on NBAtv, or will they all be removed for being on national tv of various quality? (Either on TNT, ESPN, or NBAtv.) Are NBAtv games still blacked out? Anyone watching with broadband who has a good system for this—that does not also have cable tv) My internet gives me free espn360, but it seems TNT and NBAtv games require staying up late to watch on grainy feeds, for which I am very grateful.
Since the NBA just sent out the e-mail about leaguepass, this seemed like a good time to start the conversation.

Playoff games are all blacked out. cable games are blacked out, including trash channels like nbatv.

Which, for me, is to use TweetDeck on iPhone and have groups set up. One of everyone I like to follow, one of Blazer news only, and one of Bedgers only.
Also, TwitterFox (or Echofon as it’s now called) for Firefox is cool. Built right into Firefox so you don’t have to have another app running on your computer.

The ESPN Mag preview is pretty junky. Insider only, but I'll copy a bit
4. Portland Trail Blazers
BIOLOGY — B
The most depth in the league is undermined by the fact that two pieces of the long-term nucleus — Brandon Roy and Greg Oden — already have thick medical folders.
CHEMISTRY — B-plus
The second unit will be more productive behind PG Andre Miller. But if the vet wants to be part of the crunch-time crew, he needs to get right with Roy’s handling the ball. If he can’t, Steve Blake will start and finish — and the Blazers will be easy prey to teams that can lock up Roy with a single defender.
ECONOMICS — B-minus
They paid handsomely to get Miller, so if he’s only coming off the bench and not playing at crunch time, it’s money badly spent.
HISTORY — C
What you see is what you get: GM Kevin Pritchard has made one meaningless in-season trade since he took over in 2007.
MATH — C-plus
Last year, Oden had the league’s eighth-worst minutes-per-foul ratio: 5.5. So basically the guy isn’t likely to be on the floor when you need him.
OVERALL GRADE: B
Also, Ric Bucher is trying to overtake Jalen Rose as the resident expert without a plan. MVP: Rose. MIP: Durant. Champ: Celtics. Sure Ric, sure.

those 4 are gonna be the viable
candidates for the next few years right? with CP3 and, dare I say it, Roy, as the next tier?
by DrivetheLane on Oct 22, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
CP3 is in that upper tier above Roy
But won’t likely win MVP even if he deserves it because his team won’t be great.
by Mortimer on Oct 22, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's why i threw the "viable" in there.
by DrivetheLane on Oct 22, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Now that I re-read it
I thought you included CP3 and Roy in the same tier. You’re saying CP3 is in the Lebron/Wade tier, and Roy is below it.
I agree.
by Mortimer on Oct 22, 2009 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
not exactly.
what i mean is that for the next few years I think that Lebron, Wade, Kobe, and Howard will be the 4 most viable candidates to win the award. CP3 and Roy will be on the next tier as guys that might deserve it more, but won’t win it for whatever reason (team, media bias, whatever). So I don’t think they are viable candidates to actually win.

That's just an odd choice
It isn’t that Rose isn’t a very good player, but he isn’t a great passer, defender, and is mainly a scoring guard right now. ALL mostly because he is very young and should be a very good player.
But MVP… it’s mean to do that to a good young player. Just silly.

Voting for the MVP completes at the end of the season
They typically hand out the award during the 2nd round, so Rose leading them deep into the playoffs won’t have an impact on the MVP race.
That said the Bulls will need to win 60 games for Rose to feature prominently in the MVP discussion.

Of course something can always go wrong with medication and personalized medication is a while away. Just horror stories don’t really help the case. You are much more likely to have a miserable life when catching something for which there is medication/vaccination than from that shot itself.

No way
My mom got extremely messed up by the flu shot back in 2005. It triggered some kind of inner ear disorder that made her feel like she had the flu…all the time…went on for two and a half years before she discovered on a beach trip that being at low elevation alleviates the pressure on her ears and it goes away…
Basically she has to live at elevation 500 feet or below for presumably the rest of her life, otherwise she gets sick again. Crazy, but we’ve all avoided the flu shot ever since.

My brother is a rep for Sanofi Aventis
but here is something from the National Institute of Health on the subject:
Although the prevalence of autism and similar disorders appears to have increased recently, it is not clear if this is an actual increase or the result of increased recognition and changes in diagnostic criteria.
and
The possibility that measles vaccine may cause autism through a persistent bowel infection has generated much interest, since it provides a possible biological mechanism. Epidemiological studies, however, have not found an association between MMR vaccination and autism. The epidemiological findings are consistent with current understanding of the pathogenesis of autism, which has a strong genetic component and in which the neurological defects probably occur early in embryonic development. It seems unlikely that a vaccination that is given after birth could cause autism. A minority of cases of autism may have onset after 1 year of age (regressive autism), but the single epidemiological study that included such cases did not find an association with MMR vaccination. Currently, the weight of the available epidemiological and related evidence does not support a causal association between MMR vaccine, or any other vaccine or vaccine constituent, and autism.
I heard it explained this way on the radio once. If you have the vast majority of doctors and medical studies on one side saying that there isn’t a link and Jenny McCarthy on the other side saying their is a link who you are going to believe?

Where are the repeatable studies that show a link?
The study that is generally used to support a link hasn’t been repeated, and there are some questions about the data in that study as well.
Also there are questions about whether the rates of autism are actually increasing due to changes in the criteria of diagnosing autism as well.

IMO
any player, with the exception of a dual threat QB is “better off” (in terms of being prepared for the NFL) going to a school with a pro style offense where he can get the majority of the carries. Tennessee would be an example of that, although he has split the carries his freshman year.
Playing in an offense such as Tennessee’s (or Oregon State’s for that matter) means that you have less to learn about the offenses and how to play in them once you get there. And when it comes to roster spots and the like, if you can get an advantage you have over your competitors, you better take that opportunity.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
by cloudydays on Oct 22, 2009 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don't think
its any harder for a rb, to learn a pro style offense. Its the same holes you are running through its just not out of the shotgun anymore, it’s not any different for lineman, or recievers. Same routes and same blocking schemes(depending on the coordinator ) the only position you are learning new things is the qb position.
Happy birthday to the ground!

he certainly is struggling in that offense
but I think a large part of it is him as well.
every time i have seen him play he just seems so underwhelming (yes, i went there). he makes bad decisions with the football, he’s pretty inaccurate (from what i have seen), etc.
he does look so good when he is running that football though.

also
he’s probably still going through the growing pains of adjusting to a pro-style offense. In the long run, he will certainly be more prepared to play in the NFL, but for the time being he will struggle.

Anyone ran into Google using "wikinotes" to customize your Google searches?
I googled “Blazers” and it says:
“Results include your SearchWiki notes for blazers.”
I don’t actually see any notes, but it did seem to customize my top results, which are now:
1. Blazers Edge
2. OKC Blazers
3. Oregonlive.com/blazers
4. nba.com/blazers/schedule
[snip]
9. Blazers Edge — Blazers Sign Patty Mills

That's a lame website.
Due to the current economic downturn, the OKC Blazers are regrettably closing their doors effective July 1. Despite attempts to re-organize and streamline the operation, the substantial losses from running the team have led to this business decision.
“We have the most loyal fans of any team, anywhere, and we appreciate the unwavering support they have given the team for many years,” said Bob Funk Sr. “The Blazers organization has maintained its commitment to the fans for nine years. We’ve tried everything to make this model work and explored every available option. If there had been any other choice, we would not have made this decision.”
The OKC Blazers thank everyone for their support during their 17 seasons of play in the Central Hockey League.
Sincerely,
DeBray Ayala
General Manager

a couple reasons
insurance in case usc beats us, a higher overall rating of the pac 10 making our conference title look better and would anyone else like to see usc play in a bowl game like the sun bowl? im not saying the ducks wont beat usc i just really want to see them hit a low this season that they haven’t seen in a while.A win over usc is a quality win no matter what their record, and lastly how about the civil war for the pac 10 title?
Happy birthday to the ground!

yeah you guys want USC to lose this weekend
more separation in the Pac-10 standings

by cloudydays on Oct 22, 2009 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
of course
an Oregon State win this weekend, and then both teams win out (Oregon could lose one more game, presumably to USC) = Civil War showdown for Pac-10 title
