Collins: What Should the Suns Expect (if we sign him)
What's up Razor Edgers.....Reliable sources have Collins coming to the desert. I was wondering you guys can answer some questions us Suns fan have about one of your cast-offs:
Why was Collins waived? Was it like Frye, playing behind stud or maybe no place for him to play? Or was he just not a good enough NBA basketball player to make the roster.
We can obviously look at as pre-season stats, but what did you all notice during this preseason about his play?
Thanks for your help!

Bedge, I like it.
Really though, any thoughts on this guy other than I assume you think he sucks?

He doesn't suck, he's just not a game-changing player
We very well may have kept Collins, except Mills surprised us by accepting the offer that teams are required to tender players to keep their draft rights. We expected him to sign overseas instead.
So, when he did that we would either have to waive a second round draft pick, who probably shouldn’t have dropped as far as he did, or drop Collins, who was the backup behind basically the best front-court rotation int he league.

Smart, articulate guy who draws a lot of charges
but if he’s in any game for your team when it matters, then something has gone seriously wrong with the rest of your big men
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

good way of putting it.
something will have gone seriously, seriously wrong. Maybe Channing’s bones broke, Amare got his eye poked out Grant Hill retired and Lopez got traded to Cleveland to play with Shaq again. who knows

A lot of comments and links:
…in this front page story by Ben.
Mills forced the Blazers’ hand. The front office opted for potential at a needed position rather than back-up for a filled position. Of course, this is all for a 15th roster spot. Collins isn’t that great, but he’s not a bad player to have on your bench for injury protection.

He wont play much
Channing needs lots of minutes to be effective and if he gets them will be a real help for you.

He is very consistent and will unfailing provide 6 fouls every game
(given the chance to play of course).
He does seem like a nice guy.

I don't think he'll play hardly at all.
I can’t believe the Suns management thought he would fit into their system.

I'd ask the Utah people. We've only seen him in scrub minutes in the pre-season.

Have they seen him play more than scrub minutes in the pre-season?

pretty sure he was on their team for a number of years. i could be wrong, though.

Where do you think he came from?

yeah posted something on SLC Dunk as well. Wanted to get the then and now. But mostly curious why he didnt make it in Portland.

He didn't make it in Portland
Because of a numbers game. He seems to be a smart dude with good character, but the only basketball reason to sign him is that you need another big body for practice.

Why was Collins waived? Was it like Frye, playing behind stud or maybe no place for him to play? Or was he just not a good enough NBA basketball player to make the roster.
I wouldn’t put Collins in the same category as Frye. Frye always seemed like he had the talent to be a rotation player in the NBA, he just needed to find the right situation. Collins is more of a scrub/end of bench player. He has size and NBA experience, but he isn’t a player you want to rely on for anything more than insurance in case your other bigs get injured or in foul trouble.

Collins seemed like a great guy with good character, articulate, and fun.
The minutes I saw him play he looked like a player out there that the defense at least had to account for, for he is big. He is not a game changer, good shooter, good rebounder, or good defender. He kind of reminds of what I might look like out there if I was very tall. I wish we could have kept him for injury protection, as he does make a savvy veteran move every couple of plays.

Like his brother, he is a historically bad rebounder for a big man. And doesn't do much on offense either.
But won’t make any trouble, and is a warm practice body and can take charges, stand in the way and hand out fouls.

I'm sure he'll be a great addition to help boost Frye's confidence in practice.

Speaking of which,
Fry started as the Suns center tonight, playing over 32 minutes and had 1 rebound. 1.
