Smith: Collins In Street Clothes, Udoka Meets With Nate

Am I doing this right?

More photos » by Rick Bowmer - AP

Am I doing this right?

Brian T. Smith with some interesting speculation in his practice notes...

Udoka was then approached by Jarron Collins - who, like Udoka, is trying to win the team's 15th and final roster spot. Collins, who was wearing street clothes, walked up to Udoka, whispered something in his ear, and then walked away. Udoka looked caught off guard by the conversation, as did the Blazers assistant coach working with him. Meanwhile, Collins walked off the court - head pointed downward - waved and walked into the team's locker room. As soon as Collins left, Blazers coach Nate McMillan walked out, and said he needed to speak with Udoka. Practice was then closed.

But where was Patty Mills?!?!?!?!

Neither Udoka nor Collins looked particularly good last night, but Collins really struggled.  3 points, 3 boards, 5 fouls in 25 minutes and he was pushed around pretty thoroughly by his old Jazz mates.

Be sure to click through to Smith's blog for KP's reaction.

The only good thing about being 'laid off' in the NBA...

Is that unless you really suck… someone will pick you up. I guess it would stink to almost make the roster of a quality team. I mean…Adam Morrison got a ring… how unfair is that?

Keep Mills

Udoka won’t see the court unless THREE of our wing players are all hurt at the same time. I’d rather keep Patty for the future potential to turn him into a change of pace backup and/or a future draft pick.

Its a tough call

But gambling on the upside of Mills might make more sense. Otherwise maybe just keep the 15th spot open.

by JasonT on Oct 21, 2009 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

and I have a sentimental investment in Udoka for what he gave to the blazers 3 years ago. If you are going to fill the 15th spot and pay for a player that will likely not see the court in any meaningful minutes all season, I say keep Mills and see how he develops…

by Rudiculous on Oct 21, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mills would never see the court.

More than THREE players would have to go down.

PG depth chart
Miller, Blake, Bayless, Roy, Rudy, Howard, Mills

Mills just isn’t a very good point guard. Much worse than his Olympic performance would suggest and especially bad in half court sets. There is a good chance he doesn’t even stick in the league much les on this team. At least Udoka improves defense and gives you some flexibility to make trades.

by Nick Van Excellent on Oct 21, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course he won't

but it’s not about this year, it’s about looking at his potential down the road. Udoka is only getting worse. Mills can be given some time in the D league once he heals, and perhaps turned into at least a 2nd round pick. You won’t get that out of Udoka.

It doesn't matter.

Wanting to have Mills on the roster is like wanting to have Taureen Green on the roster. (Green might be a little better actually)

He has no potential down the road. Zero. Zip. Not going to happen. It would be better to keep the roster spot open for flexibility. This is the worst sort of team for him and he’s not very good in general. The fact that he broke his foot probably kills any chance of him sticking in the league ever. His only talent, running down the court quickly in a straight line, isn’t doing much for anyone since he can’t finish at the rim.

Poor defender, poor passer, really god-awful at finishing at the rim, small, can’t draw fouls at all, poor three point shooter, bad shot selection.

Patrick Mills is a nice guy who will never, ever, ever play for the Blazers. If he had potential it would be a slightly different story, but he doesn’t.

by Nick Van Excellent on Oct 21, 2009 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You've probably seen this before, but

At about the 1:30’ mark, Patty scoots by Deron Williams, making him look about as fast as Mark Eaton. No way Taurean Green ever showed that kind of speed. If Mills can learn the PG position (and we’ve seen repeatedly that this is no easy thing for players not already possessing the knack) and work on his 3-pt shooting, then he might eventually assume a sort of Aaron Brooks role for the team.

I've seen that game twice.

And I’ve actually posted that clip before. It is an amazing burst of speed. I love him. I think he’s an interesting person and has a fun game to watch.(sometimes)

If Mills can learn to finish around the rim, shoot the basketball, pass, run the offense, draw fouls, and defend at all, then he might have a shot at being a 2nd string PG on a bad team. Aaron Brooks is the exception to the rule for players that small and he’s miles and miles ahead of Mills in every singe category.

Imagine a tiny version of Bayless who can’t finish around the rim or draw fouls and is a much worse defender. That’s Patty Mills.

"Poor defender, poor passer, really god-awful at finishing at the rim, small, can’t draw fouls at all, poor three point shooter, bad shot selection"..."I love him"

I’d hate to see what you would say about him if you didn’t like him.

I think there have been some snap judjgements about Patty based on the injuries, low assists and low 3 pt shooting. In college he played very aggressively and sometimes out of control. I think he’s a better shooter than the 3 pt % indicates when he is able to calm down. IMO his shooting form is far better than most guys on the team now with only Rudy and Web being purer. Certainly his game needs a lot of maturing, but I think its too early to say he’ll never amount to anything as a player.

by JMoon on Oct 21, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Patrick Mills had the lowest logged shooting percentage at 36%, and the fact that he took 3.3 contested looks from the outside per game (1st) may have played a role in that… For as fast as Mills is, he got to the rim at an average rate and really struggled to convert once there. He also ranked last for the percentage of possessions he was fouled on—just 5%.-DraftExpress

He’s just not a good PG, which is bad enough, but he’s also really small and not great at scoring either, so it’s not like he’s a good undersized 2 guard either.

I like him as a person. It’s pretty bad-ass that he did so well against team USA and his speed is undeniable. He should become a runner.

by Nick Van Excellent on Oct 21, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is funny to me

he is apparently one of the most unskilled people to ever be signed to an nba contract, considering he doesn’t even have size, according to you. yet the blazers front office saw fit to draft him and apparently have narrowed it down to a guy in Udoka (who, if the Spurs don’t need him, I don’t see why the Blazers would) and the talentless, tremendously undersized Mills.

by pdxlifer on Oct 21, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly.

He was drafted with the 25th pick in the second round. That’s not exactly showing tons of faith in him. He had a tiny chance of making the team after he spent a year playing overseas.

With his broken foot he has probably has no shot of making this team or any NBA team really. I like him, but he’s the worst PG prospect I can remember the Blazers drafting in a long time.

by Nick Van Excellent on Oct 21, 2009 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting...

I thought Collins had the inside track. With Rudy and Nic dinged/Travis struggling/Martell coming off a major injury, the SF logjam suddenly doesn’t seem so tight. I’m a sucker for young guys with upside, so I’m still leaning Mills over Ime, but Ime might be the guy. Either way, I will be fine with whoever gets the 15.

This is all part of KP’s master plan to be revealed later, once you throw in the way he tricked Utah and Toronto this off season, he’s turning into an evil genius. What will that guy do next? I think this is part of his plan for Paul Allen to buy a D-League team.

by tominhawaii on Oct 21, 2009 2:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Rubbish

The plan is to buy a Euro team to stash our draft picks, make sure they learn Nate’s system, and have cheap buyouts.

We’ve already got a point guard, center-forward, and forward in Europe. We’ll have the best record this year, so Paul Allen can’t buy anyone’s #30 pick this year, because it will be ours. So he’ll buy another #27 or 24 or something and we’ll draft another Euro or two.

Yes, it's a well-known fact that

Australia’s indigenous youngsters often undergo a delayed growth spurt. Evonne Goolagong, for example, was 5’6" during here early tennis-playing years, but had shot up to 7’3" by the time she won her first Wimbledon. You could look it up!

by CatMan2 on Oct 21, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Correction:

Patty Mills is not an “indigenous Australian.” He is an indigenous Torres Strait Islander. Natives of the Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically distinct from Autralian aborigines. This is quite evident in Patty Mills’ physical features. His hair is “wooly” or “nappy,” unlike Australian aborigines (whose hair is straight) and he doesn’t have any of the common facial characteristics of Australian aborigines.

If Mills stays on the Blazers or signs with another NBA team, he will NOT be “the first Australian aborigine in the NBA,” as many people have proclaimed.

Dang! This is really bad news!

I recall now that natives of the Torres Strait not only DO NOT go through that growth spurt, but they actually shrink a bit in stature and roughly double in weight as they enter their early 20’s. Can it be that the Blazers didn’t do their homework here?!?!?!

Technically, Patty Mills is 50% Torres Strait Islander and 50% Australian Aborigine.

Yet, no matter Mills’ ethnicity, NVE is correct to point out he’s highly overrated by fans — although most basketball scouts are thankfully more honest about his lack of potential and weak skill set — thus, I still fully expect him to be waived in the coming days.

by Nick Van Excellent on Oct 22, 2009 6:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I don’t think they thought he would be ready to be a player this year, and they still don’t. It was a gamble on future potential, but the point was that KP is undoubtedly a little higher on him than you sound, or he wouldn’t have drafted him.

The reason they kept him is not clear, of course. If it wasn’t for basketball reasons as was reported, then this whole discussion is moot. If it was for basketball reasons, clearly they decided they don’t want to give up on the gamble yet.

He has evidently taken a shine to Patty. He also took a shine to Sergio. Maybe he has a point guard fetish.

by jksnake99 on Oct 21, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not shocking, really

The front office apparently has concluded that Mills is more valuable, long term, than Udoka or Collins. And apparently the front office has also concluded that the short term rewards of keeping either Collins or Udoka are outweighed by the long term rewards of keeping Mills.

Maybe it’s just me, but the foregoing reasoning seems quite sound. Sure, reasonable minds can disagree on either of the foregoing conclusions, but it is a stretch to say that a reasonable mind can truly be “shocked” by this decision. Funny thing is, snake, you’ve always struck me as a reasonable person. So I gotta say I am shocked by your reaction.

He's being reasonable, though. The disgusting thing here is somebody in the Portland Trail ...

Blazers organization — whether it’s Kevin Pritchard or maybe Paul Allen himself, which’d be awful if the latter is once again interjecting his power in matters where he’s shown by past failures (e.g., Darius Miles) to be an ignorant moron — actually thinks that this diminutive waterbug, Patty Mills, is nothing beyond a currently injured scrub who’s best-case scenario ultimately is something like an undersized off guard such as Jose Barea or Chucky Atkins.

Ime or Jarron would have made no difference to our ability to compete for a championship this year unless we get really unlucky with injuries. Patty is no different in this regard but the kid does have talent and his speed with the ball gives him at least one NBA ready skill.

I see a move to consolidate coming early in the season. Not necessarily because of this decision but really just because I want to see it happen. Is that a good enough reason? Lose TOSBEC for a good PF/C – that makes more difference to our ability to compete in the playoffs than Ime or Jarron would have.

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Petteri, Claver, and Freeland are unsigned first round picks. There are currently only seven players with that status afaik, the other ones are Splitter for the Spurs, Ibaka for the Thunder and Vazquez for the Magic and the French 7 footer Vince Carter dunked on during the Olympics who will never make it to the NBA :)

Mills and crusty old Kammerichs and Sinanovic are unsigned second round picks (well, Mills was until/if he took the contract tender). You retain their rights by making them a minimum salary contract offer every year for at least 1 year unguaranteed. Their salary is not counted towards the cap until they sign, and you can do that as long as they are pro players somewhere + 1 year.

Unsigned first round picks are included in team salary immediately after the draft depending on where they were picked (scale amount from 1 to 30). If such a player signs with a team outside of the NBA instead (or still had a contract there), his salary is excluded on the first day of the regular season and comes back on at the start of the next offseason or when his contract ends.
