Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

The sky is falling, Fire Nate!, Oden is a bust!, Etc.

Ya ok, so obviously i was joking........what heck kind of intro is this? Well, let me get to the point. Checking out an article on Bedge or oregonlive.....i cant seem to find it now.......i read a quote from Nate Mac says to the effect "tonight will be treated as a regular season game." This is normally a good thing. Let me just say right now that there has probably not been a bigger Nate Mac supporter than myself, i love the guy as our coach and from my limited perspective he has been nothing short of awsome for us.

Star-divide

BUUUUUT, i can not seem to help but ask myself the question: Why arent Oden and Miller sure fire, lock freaking solid, starters. I read the article about Nate V. Payton in G.P.s rookies year, i get that, i understood that......at first. My thought was(again, limited) that Miller and Oden would have to outplay Blake and Pryzzy, again rightfully so. But here we are the preseason is about over and Oden has outplayed Joel, Miller has killed Blake(i hurt when i typed that, blake rocks) but who is starting the last preseaon game? Blake and Joel.

Joel i could certainly omit, Oden was , at the last minute called to start against the nuggets last game. He sat the Jazz(tonight) game out to rest a thigh bruise to my understanding. So, that you could say......Oden would have started tonight if it were a regular season game. Miller? please, seriously, help me understand?!?!? What the flippin heck is going on with that one? In my humble opinion, Nate dropped the freaking ball on Miller and Roy's developing chemistry. Using the first part of the preseason to feel out performance is the norm, and i suppose this was in part my thought and understanding of competition but if someone plays better than you, THEY START!!! So, why Nate didnt use the last half of the preseason to develop Roy and Millers Chemistry, i will never know.

Had Blake came out and made Dre Miller look old and out of place and just not a good player i would be yelling from the roof tops for Blake to start. I love Blake as a player, scrappy, tough, great shooter, but this does not a star point guard make. Please understand, i dont mean to say Miller made blake look old, out of place, and bad, just that Miller is ALOT better player than Blake. Thats not Blakes fualt, i would love to see him retire a Blazer but he will never be a top 10 PG. Miller on the other hand, well......guess what? He allready, right now, is a top 10 PG. Why the freaking heck is he not our starter!!!!

Please guys, talk some sense into me, tell me where i am missing things, because god i hate sounding like a Nate hater. I just dont get it is all. Please Bedge, i need your help to understand what Nate Mac is thinking.

"This does not a star PG make " . . .

You gave away your opinion & belief in that statement.
Championship team (as well as even good teams) don’t have
to have “Stars” at every position. In the Blazers case, as I’ve previously
posted, BRoy is our initiator, just as Jordan was, Blobe, Wade and James
are their teams initiator. Miller needs the ball in his hands to make his game
work. I’m not trying to diminish his skills or value, just trying to use my long
experience as a Blazermaniac/Player/Coach to describe why the two don’t
mesh perfectly on the court. In order for Miller (or BRoy) to be effective they
need to break down the defense (off the dribble – one on one or P & Roll/Slip),
then take the shot/scoring opportunity or hit the open man when they draw the
double or make the defense rotate. Miller is very good on the post (have watched
him for years) and off the dribble, as well as being a excellent passer. On the
flip side he is not a good outside shooter or great off-the ball due to his lack of outside
shooting ability. BRoy has great one on one/ driving skills and is a good outside
pull up shooter. He does not post nearly as much as Miller, but has 4" and leaping
ability that help him finish at All-Star quality. Both are willing passers and have good
all around games, but the fact remains they both need the ball in their hands to
implement their strengths.
In this case, BRoy has already shown his chemistry with Blake and last years
starting unit, and just because Miller does not start doesn’t mean he won’t get the
minutes to contribute (25 +), handle the ball and give the 2nd unit the playmaker/
scorer it needs. I envision Miller coming in at the eight minute mark after Roy gets
comfy and playing with the 1st unit, then directing the 2nd unit.

       GO BLAZERS !!!! COINCAST SUCKS !!!! YEAR # 3 coming up !!!
                                                    WHAT A HORRRRRRIBLE DEAL !!!!!

So, would you leave Miller and Oden on the bench at crunch time, and have Brandon keep running ISOs with spot-up 3 pont shooters in each corner?

I was hoping Miller could add more diversity to the Blazer’s offense while Roy was also in the floor. Perhaps that was a pipe dream

No, and I wasn't talking about GO.

If you understood my commentary, I envisioned Blake starting ( first 7-8 min)
to help get BRoy and Smooth get going, and then Miller Time. AM could play 4-5 minutes
with the 1st unit, then run the show for the 2nd Unit, since that unit needs a initator
to score/penetrate/post & create opportunities for others.
As far as GO is concerned, I think Nate will try to help him find a comfort level
(starting or 1st off) until he fully adapts to the NBA & speed/foul trouble. I’m the
original G_ _ F (according to ONE NYC basement dweller), so GO is the future
in my book. To those who know me, it’s 35 + years as a Blazermaniac and 40 +
years as a player and coach living the “Old school” aspects of the game.
I like Miller’s game, but understand that some skill sets just don’t mesh.
GO WILL BE A MONSTER in time (* sans injury !).

Thanks, but my question was referring to end game strategy

When you said this about Roy and Miller

the fact remains they both need the ball in their hands to implement their strengths

Does that mean you would prefer not to have Brandon and Andre on the court together at the end of games, because Miller would inhibit (or duplicate) Roy’s ability to drive and score? (I was encouraged by the end of the Nugget’s game, when the Roy-Miller backcourt was able to “mesh” with Oden and bring the team back, with a 24-6 run)

If this trio is the best option for the end of games, then why not at the beginning of each half, as well?

I agree with your statement,

However you miss my point. By saying “this does not a start point guard make” i am simply refering tot he fact that Blake is a good player and alot fo teams would love to have him, but is not and will never be a start PG. Andre Miller IS a star PG right now. I agree with your points about “fit” etc. My point was this…..if your a coach and you have a star point guard and a servicable one, who starts? The star, I have never seen the servicable guy starting above the Star, unless it is for some other reason than skill. But i hear your point.

To many typos

Ugh, sorry that last reply to walkoff41 had ALOT of typos, just woke up…..my bad.

Manu Ginobli is a perfect example.

During the prime years of the Spurs, they had a very good,
balanced team. The only minor problem was that if Duncan didn’t
initiate the offense from the post, then Tony Parker needed the ball
in his hands to break down the defense (all the way to the rim) or when
the defender played off, to pop the mid range jumper. Manu is also a
great driver (primarily to his left as a lefty), but could hit the outside shot/3.
POP & staff determined that if Manu came off the bench it would allow
Duncan & Parker to be the primary initiator’s (one on the post – other drive
or perimeter) (Bowen in the corner/The Euro center waiting to slash 4 boards
& Finley/SG spotting for kickout jumper) to get a comfort level, then Manu would
come in to warm up for 3-4 minutes with the 1st unit, then run/initiate the 2nd
unit with his drives/p & r/ one on one moves. There are many other examples,
with most of these “STARS” coming off the bench as 6th men. (Usually they are
one dimensional "STARS ", ie Jason Terry, Tony Kukoc, etc.)
I’m not seeking to diminish Miller’s skills, just stating that there is a reason
he could be very effective in a 6th man role (if ego will allow).

P.S. – I really don’t think Andre Miller is a “STAR”. He’s very good, but not at ALL-STAR
           Level. Good Veteran PG, yes.

It's GO time !

by walkoff41 on Oct 21, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Again, i understand your point.

But when Miller says that he would not have come here had he known he would not be the starter then you arent left with the option to ask him to play 6th man. Those examples you gave are all people who are WILLING to come off the bench. Dre has made it clear this is not something he wants.

To your opinion that Miller isnt a star, you are entitled to your opinion just as anyone is……my thought was any time you have a top 10 NBA PG he automatically qualifies as a star. My opinion is that had Miller played a more flashy game over his career he would have several all-star appearences. Millers game is very ceribral and low key type of play. Its your iconic PG play. This inherently goes un-noticed when you have the Chris Paul’s and Rajon Rondo flash types of the world.

Whan you have a point who can Score, pass, rebound, and defend(to a degree) then you have yourself a complete player. This is Andre Miller. This is not Blake. I just for the life of me dont understand why Nate wont allow Roy and Miller to develop chemistry by letting them get significant burn time in the preseason. I dont get it, cant wrap my head around it, and look at it as a glareing mistake.

If it DOES work like this...
But when Miller says that he would not have come here had he known he would not be the starter then you arent left with the option to ask him to play 6th man.

…it shouldn’t!..

A true pro…which I think Andre is… with the opportunity to play on a more talented team, with more potential than he’s ever been surrounded by previously, making $7,000,000.00 per year should be able to accept whatever role he is assigned.

This will all sort itself out by the end of November or sooner. We have a deeper, more talented team than last year. I’m going to think of us as a contender because I have no doubt that we will make the playoffs. Once we make the playoffs it will all be about winning a round and advancing… At that point none of this foolishness will mean diddly-pooh…

The chemistry has 82 REAL games to develop… I think it will but I don’t think that right now is the time to be worried about Andre’s feelings… or anybody elses’.

Toss the ball in the air (hopefully with real refs…) and let’s get this party started!!!

GO BLAZERS!!!

I like Nate.

I don’t think he’s an outstanding technical coach, but he’s pretty good at developing a team and keeping everyone in check. He has a lot of basketball experience which helps, but I don’t think he’ll win any prizes for outsmarting the competition with a bunch of tricks and crafty coaching.

This is not the first time where he’s tried to “think outside the box” and ended up outsmarting himself.

  • Having Joel guard Yao straight up was one of the dumbest things I’ve seen a coach do in a while. Pretty shocking really since Joel actually announced he wasn’t going to front Yao to the media before the first playoff game. Adalman must have jumped for joy when he read that. A perfect example of Nate thinking he’s being clever by bucking the norm only to discover that the norm is pretty effective sometimes.
  • Another minor example of this happened last year when he pulled Batum from the starting lineup before the first game against the Lakers. Nate didn’t think Batum could handle the psychological pressure so his solution was to tell Batum he was no longer in the starting lineup the day before the season started. Good call.

One of the problems is that Andre does not have a game that Nate is comfortable with coaching. It takes a while to get used to Andre, (Elton Brand agrees.) but that doesn’t mean you bench him. That’s like the Army sticking with it’s old planes because the new jets do a bunch of stuff they aren’t used to. I don’t want to use a machine gun, I like my rifle, it has a bayonet and I can just sit here waiting to shoot open three’s. It’s really good at that.

I don’t think Nate should get fired (yet) but there are different types of coaches for different stages in a teams development. If the Blazers go into December looking like a unorganized mess, then it’s probably time to start thinking about other options.

Come on dude.

Wait for some REAL games to be played in the REAL regular season by the REAL rotation. This is preseason. The clippers regularly beat the L@kers in preseason. I will start to worry if we start losing REAL NBA games.
