The View from the Cheap Seats -- Tonight's Game
I took my daughter to the game tonight, 308 baby! Some impressions...
1) Greg Oden spent his warm-ups shooting free throw after free throw. Lovely to see him go 6 for 6 from the line. And that shot looked smooth. Likely won us the game tonight.
2) The replacement referies made this painful to watch (not to mention an extra 45 minutes long). I'm not saying they called a bad game, I'm just saying...
3) The box score doesn't show it, but Nic Batum sure does the little things. Some beautiful assists, a stunning lay-up block, an important three.
4) Sure was chippy for a preseason game. You get the feeling there's going to be some nasty games between these two clubs this year.
5) Juwan Howard was a great addition to this team. He fit in very well out there. And, err, Travis Outlaw is not a power forward.
6) I haven't seen Martell Webster play in a long time. I thought his defence was better than what other posters have suggested.
7) Jerryd Bayless is really fast.

My thoughts
Every single player that saw the court tonight had at least 1 foul called against them. The constant whistles, good, bad and otherwise, completely ruined the flow of the game.
I don’t recall a prior technical foul against Batum in the past.
The flagrant foul against Joel was bizarre.
Way too many offensive fouls on both sides of the court.
All that being said, seeing the 12-point comeback win in the 4th quarter was by far the most fun preseason experience ever!

The T against Batum was a joke
I imagined him yelling “le merde” too loudly

There was some French guy sitting behind us
Who started yelling French curses when Batum got called for that, sending our section into laughter.

My wife is French, from Avignon.
When something bad happens (dropping and breaking a glass on the kitchen floor, for instance) she will exclaim: “Putain du merde!”
And you wouldn’t say “la” (or, incorrectly “le”) — you might just yell “Merde!”

And, err, Travis Outlaw is not a power forward.
You picked that up all the way from the 300 level, eh? Nice job

But if he's not a small forward, then what is he...
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

90 free throw attempts. 90!!!!!!!!!
Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Rudy, Batum, Outlaw, Webster, Bayless, Blake, Miller, Joel... Holy crap!

Just got back too
That was the most ridiculous game I have ever attended. It took 3 HOURS to play a pre-season game.
58 fouls, I swear to God half were bad calls.
For me the telling statistic was that for all the offensive fouls both ways, the stats said the Blazers had drawn 1 charge and the Nugs ZERO.
Oden is a beast, period, and Miller is good too. That’s my view from tonight.

I thought Webster looked good. Like other players he got called for weak fouls. He blocked Birdman on a dunk but
they called foul. Looked good to me.

This was easily the worst officiated game I've ever seen!
90 Free Throws. 58 fouls. Two of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in my life (the moving pick on BRoy and the phantom 6th foul on Greg).
All of that and the two head coaches managed not to have comments to draw fines when it was all said and done! They both deserve Nobel Peace Prizes!
But what a 4th quarter by the good guys! GO was a monster! BRoy was actually looking like, well, BRoy! Great leadership from Miller and Howard. I think there is no way that Greg recovers from those first three quarters last year, to see him perform and react like a kid was worth the price of admission all by itself!

Imma copy myself in here, too.
My post-game recap from section 312
The Good:
-The 4th quarter squad of Miller, Roy, Webster, Howard, and Oden looked AMAZING. Obviously we’d have Aldridge instead of Howard under normal circumstances. Roy and MIller looked really good together. Miller knew when to let Roy takeover, but also showed the ability to take and charge and make the tough decision when necessary. Miller continued to make Steve Blake look second rate. My wife now thinks Miller is better than Roy, cuz each preseason game we’ve been to, Miller looks great.
-ODEN! Despite the ticky tack positioning fouls early in the game, Oden came through in the 4th, complete with blocks, spin moves, offensive rebounds, etc… He could not have done this a year ago following 3 quarters of foul trouble.
-Bayless: He may only be good at one thing, but he does it well. Should KP move Steve at some point, having Bayless as your number two doesn’t look so bad after a night like tonight.
Juwan Howard: I’d love to hear the argument stating that Travis Outlaw is better than Juwan Howard right now. Because he isn’t showing it in the games. Howard is a pro, seems to take personal responsibility for making Oden look good, and has a wide skill set that is perfect for the backup 4 role.
The Bad:
-Outlaw: Once again, Brick City was in full force. Travis made ONE field goal tonight, and it was a dunk off a sweet set up from Miller. The crowd usually turns on Travis but the end of games, but the time it takes for this to happen is getting much shorter. Nate didn’t even think about putting him in when it mattered in the fourth, going with Batum and Howard.
-The Refs: 3 calls tonight were the kind of thing youtube videos are all about. First, Roy is pivoting with the ball at the top of the arc, looking for someone to pass to when a Denver player runs him over FROM BEHIND. Roy couldn’t even see the guy coming, and they call an offensive foul on Roy. Second, Przybilla gives a completely run of the mill hip check to a cutting defender, and they call him for a flagrant. In. the. second. quarter. Who does that? Third, Oden’s final foul. At the top of the key, looking for an open man, turns with the ball over his head, Martin is playing close D, Oden’s arms slowly go across Martin’s face, Martin shoves Oden, offensive foul called on Greg to foul him out. Absolutely incredible the crap these refs are capable of.
Overall, a great game. the feel of the preseason is over for sure. The crowd was probably 95% to capacity, and loud as hell. I’m pumped for the games when we’re playing our best players their normal minutes. Teams should be scared of us.

Oh a lot more than 3 calls were bad
Those refs were absolutely horrible. The NBA should be ashamed to put them out there.

well yeah.
but those three were more than just “Steve Javy sucks” bad. They were the kind of calls that would get a real ref fired the next day (if real refs ever got fired).

At least HALF the offenisve foul calls
Most of which were on us, were horrible, and let’s not even talk about that Howard foul at the end or Oden’s last foul.

And this is a lockout?
It would make sense if it was a strike, but I can’t possibly see how the league can benefit their negotiating position by proving to everyone how valuable their regular refs are. Big mistake there.

I don't know that the regular refs would classify as valuable.
However no officiating effort could rival the sucktastic amateurism of tonight’s zebra unit. Not even Violet Palmer working with two clones of Violet Palmer could have done a worse job out there tonight.

Its about pension $
And the right to force older refs to retire as I understand.

But the thing is
all the lockout is doing is giving the refs union a stronger negotiating position. “Give us what we want, or your fans will give up in disgust watching the replacements.”

I was truly impressed by oden's 4th quarter play tonight.
I’ve been trying very hard not to buy into the improvement hype, but I gotta say after that last quarter, the dude was just a beast. Denver could do nothing to contain him. It was also good to see him cheering and clapping and celebrating with Howard after their plays, you could tell he was really pumped, even from my view at the top of 307.
Also, as much as I dislike bayless, he was able to penetrate quite well tonight when miller was at the one and he was playing the two.
Trade Outlaw. Now. Do it. Just do it. (bring on your #25’s).
And holy words i can't use were these refs pathetic. If this were a televised game there would be a plethora of bannings in the gameday thread from the frustration.

By the end of the game
The refs were annoying me enough I just wanted it over. I wanted to win but I was almost willing to take a loss to not have to deal with OT and twenty more minutes of that crap.

Wait till the regular season and the bad calls start determining the outcome of games.
In 1995 the replacement refs were so bad the games became a farce. Players were getting tossed out of games left and right, and there were an unusual number of fights. I truly wanted them to just shut down until they got the real refs back.

If I remember
MJ himself finally was the one who told the NBA to get it done. We may need Kobe, LeBron and co to do the same.

Shout out from Section 314!!!
Anyway, yeah…
Oden= Beast
Miller and Roy can, and will co exist well… very well
B Rex… I wanna see a couple more games like tonight, but he was impressive
Webster, nothing to complain about, just a solid overall game
Howard, proved he can still ball!
Blake is just not as good as Miller, and i’m a HUGE Blake fan
Replacement Refs… um….. 68 was the number I think of fouls called… You decide.

Just want to add,
In the fourth quarter Oden was all that everyone not found on a Blazer site said he would never be. He was dominant against Nene, KMart and Birdman; not exactly the leagues worst collection of front men. Portland loses without Oden’s play in the fourth.
The refs in the game I saw against Sacramento were bad, but tonight they were laughably bad. More than once I laughed at the comedy of these calls. In the first quarter Joel gets hacked across the arm going up for a layup; no call. Denver then rebounds and pushes the ball upcourt to (if my memory serves) Billups who goes in untouched save for some wind from Blake’s flailing arms; called for the and 1. Oden travels, gets the layup; Outlaw jump-stops, gets the travel call. Martell seriously got the Mark Bryant treatment today. Not to mention the mystery flagrant, magic techincal, and the offensive foul of a Denver players hand with Roy’s back.
Outlaw’s handles have improved, but where is he going to be able to use them if his jumper wont fall?
Bayless needs to see the floor. I like him on the floor with both of the other point guards. I don’t know how that is going to happen unless Rudy stays injured.
It was really nice in the fourth quarter having Miller and Roy to get the ball to. A nice change from only having one ball handling closer.
I was under the impression this summer that Juwan Howard couldn’t play any more. Why was I not informed of this fallacy?
All in all a nice game and great 4th quarter. The NBA has made a great case to get people to quit whining about the real officials. Well done, NBA, well done.
It wasn't the first time I'd been kicked in the cherries and called a rat by a woman, but it was the first time I didn't mind.

My section was yelling “ARE YOU SURE THAT’S NOT A FOUL?” every time the refs blew a whistle.

I didn't see the game
But doing this will against one of the best trio of tough defensive bigs in the league is very, very good news for Oden.
Only better news is dominating an allstar or legend, like if he did this to Shaq or Dwight or sumthin’.
K-Mart is tough and physical, Nene a very good defender, and Birdman as well. Very damn good news.

well
it wasn’t looking too good for Oden, after 3 quarters. But Nate’s much-maligned decision to keep pulling Greg out of the game after each foul sure paid dividends in the 4th quarter

funniest thing was if felt like a playoffgame and it was only Practice
what stood out alittle besides the cheap fouls was greg vs nene. against a quality big (and to be fair in the first half there would be 3 big guys in the circle with greg) oden struggled abit just getting into position. even if he got under the basket there were 2 other big guys there passing by. but once nene left he kicked the crap out of the birdman and lesser bigs. its all good in the end!
