Jason Quick writes that Nate has said he may use last year's starters on opening night.
Looking for better defense and more cohesion, Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan strongly indicated on Thursday that his starting unit from last season will remain intact as the team approaches it's Oct. 27 season opener against Houston.
McMillan said Sunday's exhibition game against Denver will feature a starting lineup of Steve Blake at point guard, Brandon Roy at shooting guard, Nicolas Batum at small forward, LaMarcus Aldridge at power forward and Joel Przybilla at center.
Smells like a motivational ploy to me. I'll believe that when I see it when it comes to opening night. Nate was obviously frustrated by the effort last night and rightfully so; but he's singling out the wrong people with this message in my opinion.
In the same piece, Jason Quick also has tonight's starters...
The Blazers tonight will play at Utah and will start Blake, Webster, Aldridge and Przybilla. McMillan was undecided at small forward, saying either Ime Udoka or Batum would start.
Bummed that you can't watch tonight's game on TV? Then watch all of last night's game recorded on a flip cam. Awesome guerilla work there. I think we found a viable business model: one man and a flip cam. The tape isn't perfect but you'll be able to clearly see a number of the plays I wrote about in the Media Row Report.

blake is blake. this is about more about inspiring andre, less about blake.
blake hasn’t looked fantastic this preseason by any stretch but we all know what he can do

last night’s 3,000 words didn’t cover it? greg deserves his spot. i wrote about his defense last night, which was solid. as was his rebounding. i think nic will keep his spot for the balance reasons.
it comes down to andre or blake. andre has more to offer. nate is again challenging andre (and greg) to buckle down and completely convince him that they deserve those spots so he has a clean conscience going into the season with those two guys as starters. if they don’t, he’s laid a groundwork for a case to stick with blake (or, less likely, przybilla)
as i wrote, andre got abused pretty badly last night by nash, especially down the stretch. nate doesn’t want to see that.

I understand Miller was burned.
It sounds like Nash had a masterful performance. He’s pretty good PG. I just don’t understand why Miller is the guy being singled out and asked to prove himself as you are insinuating. He has a great track record and his proven himself already in this league. Why does Blake get a free pass for his defensive liabilities?
I kind of understand why Miller feels frustrated.

blake will get more benefit of the doubt in a backup role. if he was playing more minutes and getting killed he would hear about it too. it would be an issue either way. the target is on andre’s back right now because he has been playing heavier minutes and (to a less extent) because he made those comments.

Miller fell and hurt his leg, earlier in the game
I was surprised Andre was out there at all, not that he was having trouble staying in front of the Nash Rambler
meanwhile, Roy was giving up fast break layins to Richardson. So, why the double-standard, coach?

i saw the play where he came off limping after dribbling the ball off his foot for a turnover. seemed like more dramatics than any serious injury. he came out of the timeout fine.
roy definitely needs to walk the walk when it comes to defense as well but when is the last time you’ve heard nate call brandon out?

Miller and a Phoenix player fell hard together and Andre stayed down for longer than “dramatics” would normally allow. Eventually Miller gimped his way back up the court but too late to prevent a Sun’s dunk at the other end. I fully expected to see Bayless coming out of the timeout, and I was very surprised to see Nate stay with a dinged-up Miller in a preseason game.
McMiilan wanted to win that game last night, and we got a glimpse of who his “finishing” lineup will be…I’d prefer no Travis and more Oden down the stretch, but they were so far behind they had to look for 3 pointers

honestly i think his pride was injured worse than his leg. nothing after the game to indicate there was anything seriously wrong.

I am sitting in the Upper deck for the other two home pre-season games, and my view will not be good enough to take great video.
Motivation for Whom?
If you think motivation is meant to help with Oden and Miller, you’d certainly have to wonder what the technique has done to Blake and Pryz. They look like shells out there. Aldridge, Miller and Oden are the only ones who look like they are ready for the season to start. Maybe you throw in Webster to a lesser extent into that mix as well but still. The pre-season hasn’t defined anything and the guys look less motivated than ever.
This starting thing seems to be Nate’s one carrot. Time to get a new trick, coach. This isn’t college ball.
Anybody remember last year’s opener when Nate put Outlaw in the starting lineup at the 11th hour? I am guessing you are going to see that same knee jerk reaction if he actually starts this five.

but the point was Martell would have started
no doubt… Nate wasn’t playing games re: the 3 spot. It may have been a knee jerk reaction but I don’t think he had much choice. Batum turned out to be the wiser start at 3 however.

Webster would have started if he hadn't been injured three weeks before...
Nate decided the night before to start Outlaw after basically committing most of October to the idea of Batum starting. Either it was nerves, bad coaching or games. I see repeats of that whiplash coming again and it doesn’t feel awesome.

This whole 'who's gonna be the starters thing' can't get off Nates back soon enough..
because everyone and their brother is hounding him to and criticizing him whichever move he makes. We all know when the season starts and we get about 8-10 games deep it’ll be pretty clear, injuries aside, who the starters should be.
Its like the guy who talks in your ear when you’re trying to fix something.

I think Nate is mishandling this, and is letting it get personal
He clearly did not like that Andre aired his dirty laundry with the media, and was looking for a reason to assert his dominance as the coach. “No player tells me who plays and in what role.”
Has Steve Blake ever stopped Steve Nash? Ever? Is benching a guy who clearly has an inferiority complex (Miller) and a guy who is a fragile psyche (Greg) going to make either of them better, or just set them back?
This is an unnecessarily dangerous game.

Its pretty obvious
A lineup of Blake, Webster, Batum, Aldridge, and Przybilla is really weak offensively. Aldridge is the only guy who can create his own shot, and even Aldridge stuggles if he is guarded by a good defensive player.
