Like most of you, I can't wait for this season to get over so we can really get into the draft. Follow me after the jump.
I just put seven jumps in this post to see what would happen.
I think nothing will happen. (If preview means anything, then only one worked.) (I've since published it and it didn't work. And they are all gone in this window I am typing in.)
Nbadraft.net has the Blazers picking 24th in the 2010 draft. Anyone excited about Michael Washington from Arkansas?
More like the 30th pick if you ask me.

I'm watching Catwoman right now. I knew it was going to be bad when I rented it. I'm laughing at the parts that would make me mad if someone had told me it was a good movie. Do you ever watch movies that you know ahead of time are going to be bad and you watch them anyway?

bad movies you watch anyways
I’m into old B movies and couldn’t resist the $5 double feature DVD including “The Land that Time Forgot” and “The People That Time Forgot.” The dinosaurs were the worst I’ve ever seen.
The acting is always laughable. What I found interesting is the main character was played by Doug McClure, and I wondered if Matt Groening didn’t spoof this guy as Troy McClure of The Simpson’s fame.

It had a budget of $8 million. That isn’t a lot of money at all.
While it isn’t a great movie by any stretch, calling it a terrible movie is too harsh. YGS is a throughly medicore movie.

Don’t ever watch this movie because it will make you dumber. Seriously. I however, did watch the whole movie with my friends, thinking “ok this HAS to get better”.

at the game lastnight
oden looked sick, dre played good. Offensive sets were disconnected, defense seemed lazy-especially perimeter defense. All of the 3’s phoenix jacked up were uncontested. Our guys kept getting chased out of the paint on offense, and the refs let phoenix blatantly travel 4-5 times. At one point Blake and Miller were in at the same time with Blake as SG? Some pretty weird lineups for sure, didn’t look like what would happen in the regular season except to cover an injury. I think overall there was a difference in the intensity levels between the two teams. Phoenix looks ready for the season, and not to be counted out just yet. The Blazers looked like they haven’t found their flow yet, not ready to say they’ll backslide this season…. They do need to tighten up the next two weeks though.

I don't feel like making a fanpost. I don't want to post this anywhere else.
I just feel more comfortable here. I don’t want to spark a bunch of hate.
I was at the game last night. It was fun. The MC is small but the seating wasn’t bad. I was eye level with the hoop, and about 20 feet back. It was definitely bare bones. The lack of a playback screen was disappointing. From my angle, it was tough to see all the action, so I kept looking up to the screen for help, but it was blank. The couple I was sitting next to was cool. She got more exiting about hearing the Friends theme song during one of the contests more than anything. Behind me was a “yells at refs guy”. He caught one of the red balls that the cheerleaders fire into the crowd. It went right over my outstretched hands. My 4yo was not happy, but I was carrying her at the time, and I wasn’t about to drop her, so I could jump to catch the ball. She loved the Blazers Dancers and one of the players. She couldn’t say who, but she did say he was wearing white (good answer, or else she would be walking home! j/k)
As far as the play, there were some entertaining moments. Andre threw a sweet alley-oop to LMA. It zipped right over the heads of a couple defenders. Webster was very aggressive and he looked good. At one point, he just decided he was going to jump over his defender for a dunk. It did not quite work – he ended up almost on his head, but he jumped super high. His wrist was momentarily hurting.
Greg looked good. He does not look like an uncoordinated newborn fawn any more. He looks like he can ask his foot to move to the left, and it will actually listen to him. Eventually he won’t have to ask, it will be instinctual. He stuck close to the basket, and did what he was supposed to do. He seemed in place, but passes into the post were often errant, and it was tough for him to immediately do something.
LaMarcus started out really cold, but started to heat up. He played a good game. He seemed to defer rebounds to his teammates at times. That was interesting.
It was funny when Brandon would knife to the hoop and then kick out to Andre on the three point line. Andre would catch it like, “what am I supposed to do with this?” The crowd kept urging him to shoot. Finally in the last couple of minutes he shot and made it. Everyone let out a shocked cheer. He missed one badly after that, but the game was pretty much over at that point.
It was pretty clear Nate was still playing with the rotations. At one point the lineup was Blake, Fernandez, Batum, Outlaw, and Przybilla. It was not smooth looking. Then, in the last couple of minutes, there was no center on the floor (well LMA was in, but you get my point). No one really seemed NSYNC the whole night.
I did feel sorry for Brandon’s defender (Jared Dudley, I think). There was nothing he could do to stop Brandon. He resorted to whining at the refs.
The crowd started to turn on Outlaw. He looked tentative, and he seemed nervous about something, but he relaxed towards the end of the game, and he played better.
Miller was good. During the intros, he was stretching at the end of the high-fiving line not paying any attention. When his name was called, he had his head down by his ankles. Joel elbowed him, and he seemed to say, “hey, you are being introduced, is this your first time or something? You are supposed to jump around with the team.” The two shared a laugh, but it was strange looking. He is a different cat. I felt there was some standing around when he had the ball. I don’t know if that was what caused him to be aggressive, or if he was aggressive cuz every one was standing around. Regardless of who was the PG, the team just was not crisp at all. Nothing really looked intentional.
Barbosa has an UGLY shot, but it kept going in. No one was guarding him, either.
Channing Frye got a big ovation, and then he proceeded to brick shots with his foot on the three point line. Ah, memories.
Nash was unbeavable. He is good. Amare just seemed to be going through the motions. Grant Hill did not play.
I blame the loss on Dan Dickau. I wish he would bring back the floppy hair. Is Dickau the original floppy hair player? All the kids are doing it these days – is he too cool to do it now?
I want Thunder Dan Majerle to play "Face" in the next iteration of the A-Team.

my son, at the game the other night, was GLUED to the court when the blazer dancers were doin their “routine”.. it was funny b/c twiggs and i were like “omg so typical , men” and my brother was like “yeah that’s nice isn’t it Q?” smh

They have too many hang-ups. Sylar keeps losing his memory and having to start over from scratch. Peter can only hold on to one power at a time and just wants to save people.

Starting Line Up and the DMV
Before pre-season, i was leaning more towards Blake as the starter, but it’s obvious Miller is the man. The only issue is Roy’s funk, is it because he is genuinely rusty or is he still learning how to play with another guard who needs to handle the ball? Oden is the starting Center. At SF, I would go Batum, simply because he is a better defender..but Martell can convince me otherwise.
We bought a used toyota sienna the other day for our growing family.
And while I dread it, but I have to go to the Oregon DMV tomorrow to transfer the title. Ugh. I’d rather have a root canal performed with a Black and Decker Drill (equipped with a masonry bit).

The last time I went to the DMV I was startled by how smoothly everything went, especially since it was at lunch time. The guy behind the counter was so good he should’ve been teaching customer service training classes. I am not being sarcastic. It was a shocking experience. Good luck.

Here’s hoping for some of the good customer service you had when I go in! I just discovered that tomorrow is a furlough day, so DMVs across this great state will be closed. I’m cutting out of work in a bit to go handle it today.

fun stories from my doped up roommate?

Amar'e has a third arm coming out of his face
This was weird. Webster was kinda standing there, and all of a sudden he just exploded with a step or two, and he tried to jump over Amar’e. Clearly Amar’e was in the way when Webster started his move. From my angle, which was eye level with the hoop, Martell’s right hand with the ball in it was almost to the top of the backboard.

It seems like martell is much more focused on driving the lane
I think right now he might be trying to prove to himself that he still has it and I for one have been impressed. I know a lot of people crack on him for his defense(compared to batum’s) but lastnight was a tough yardstick being that defense was lacking all around for our guys

I really got the sense lastnight that the team is still struggling with its identity. Both individually and as a team.
There was a lot of hesitation, it seemed like people were focused more sometimes on including others in plays than getting their own looks.

I agree, but that was one of the criticisms I had about the team last year, and something that really showed itself in the playoffs.
Finding their identity I think will allow them to be more comfortable in their roles and give them more confidence. Remember the playoffs last year, when the ball would be getting passed around and it seemed like everyone was hoping someone else would step up and create something? It’s just like that. My concern is that adding Andre and having Greg start is going to prolong this process of finding themselves. Of course I hope that I am wrong, and judging too quickly a situation that hasn’t been allowed to play out, but it seemed like between the two teams many players on Phoenix knew their roles and played with the confidence that comes with that. The Blazers on the other hand looked a tad lost.

I guess it’s their westside branch, it’s right off of Venice Blvd so there’s a lot of traffic through there.

Hmmm. . . Had to go look a few things up since I don't know much about AZ birds.
Curved-bill Thrashers are common in your parts (even I’ve seen them there) but it looks like LeConte’s Thrasher and Crissal Thrasher are more likely than a California one. (The pictures aren’t great at that site, but it’s a start.)
This AZ bird forum doesn’t say anything about anyone seeing a California Thrasher, but do mention Crissals, so that’s the direction I’d be heading for IDing your bird. Totally cool yard bird.

A lot of time the color is off in artists’ renditions — they don’t take lighting into account. What I like about that site is that they have sound recordings, so if the bird shows up again and makes any noise, that might help.

when there are 4 preseason games left to figure it out???
He usually starts solidifying the starting lineup 2 or 3 games before the opener
So I’m not too surprised at that detail.

yeah I think Pryz is totally underrated as a C so he gets treated as such. Other teams are just straight afraid of Oden.

There are some other sites where this doesn’t apply.
Most people here want Joel to retire here.
I meant underrated by other teams. Sure guys will say he's tough, but he doesn't have the intimidation factor that oden naturally has.

Fair enough.
Though I think other teams rarely under or over-estimate players. They’re well scouted, and any player that gets underestimated will take advantage of that error in judgment.
see what I'm talking about is not how well-scouted each player is necessarily
it’s more about how Oden is perceived as more of an offensive threat by other teams. Lets face it, last year Oden was an unknown commodity on the offensive end of the court but he is a big body. So typically when the ball would go to him he was getting mobbed by the defense. The same wouldn’t be said about Joel. He is not perceived as a big offensive threat, so he is not treated as such and therefore allows other teams to more easily slip into playing their game. Oden is just more disruptive by forcing other teams to modify their strategies, therefore getting them out of their comfort zones, and allowing us to take advantage.

I agree with you on this one, but I’m not furious or anything. If we’re 5 games in and Miller and Oden are not only not starting, but also playing fewer minutes than Blake and Joel… and we’re struggling… then I’ll be very upset. Right now I’m just annoyed.

I'll be honest, I'm not at all angry with his decision on a basketball level.
But he has just destroyed the trust of several players on this team. All that bravado about equal opportunity and starting but when players really perform he goes back to square one anyway, why couldn’t he have kept it simple and said:
“I will start who I believe will win games, we’ve had a successful run so far so we’ll see who comes out of training camp.”

I hope Ben is right about calling Nate's annoucement of the old starting five as a ploy...
1. A whole summer is a long time from last year. Have we seen enough evidence of the last years starting five this preseason to assume it’s our best starting lineup?
2. The key is GO. If he’s working it on offense, the opponent will be collecting fouls quickly which will led them to penalty quicker. Having our opponents in penalty will give Broy and the rest of the team a bright freakin green light to go to work. Add that on top of the substitute refs, we are looking at ALOT of free throws.
3. Regardless of who’s been in there for pre-season, our defense sucks. Figuring out who should start based on offense while we have been preaching about defense, doesn’t make any sense…Especially when the key to how good we will be on defense comes back again to #52.

Truth be told, I was not there to experience the wraith of the two beastly Blazer fans but I did help edit the email that was sent to our season ticket holder representative, whose name has been changed. I’ll admit Tim did most of the leg work but I think it’s worthy of a post. It was a scary situation and I do not envy Mike & Tim for what they endured for even a quarter of one game. Here is the letter:
Hi Josephine,
I tried calling a few times already today, but haven’t been able to reach you. I (along with my friends with whom I split the season tix) am really hoping you can help.
Two months ago at the season-ticket holders’ open house, we were pretty excited when we discovered that we were able to move up a few rows within our section. It turns out that it was no coincidence why these were the only better seats open in our section. People farther down already knew what we found out last night (1st preseason game): namely that our new seats are situated between the two biggest Blazer fans in Portland. And by biggest, I mean from a physical standpoint.
I don’t want to sound insensitive, but at the same time I think it is relevant for me to be honest. The physical person of both these individuals overflowed into our seats, to the extent that when we stood up, our seats are prevented from raising. Access to the arm rests was out of the question. The uncomfortableness of being compressed into our seats was only half of the problem.
The personal hygiene of these two men was beyond reprehensible. The odor and appearance of the gentleman to our right indicated that he had not laundered his clothes in several days, which was amplified by the fact that he was on a continuous basis, literally dripping sweat. He was perpetually eating, during which time crumbs spilled across his torso on to me. The gentleman to our left compulsively picked at scabs on his skin to the point they were bleeding. Despite his obvious pain, he deliberately pulled his own hair out, and upon shaking his head afterward, unleashed a cloud of dandruff that settled over my friend and his cup holder (which wasn’t accessible due the man’s leg, anyway). This was not just once or twice, but non-stop throughout the entire game.
You might remember a couple weeks ago that I re-wrote XYZ as a tribute to the team. I can say with confidence that I was as excited about the upcoming season as anybody. However, there is no way that we can sit there through the whole season. Without exaggeration, I felt nauseous by the end of the 1st quarter (and I have a pretty strong stomach). It KILLS me to say this, but I would rather watch from home. I can’t take my wife or 5 year old son to a game in that manner. We can’t give these tickets as gifts to friends and family. I can’t even in good conscience sell them on Craig’s List or the Season Ticket Resale Center.
PLEASE call me back so we can talk about alternatives.

AFTERMATH: Fortunately, she was very understanding and as disgusted as we were. For situations such as this, they reserve “house” seats in each section. We were able to move into those for the remainder of the season. The new seats are two rows closer and on the isle.

dang, that is good...btw, you might already talked about this but
what coach do you think can take the Blazers to the title? i personally think Nate can, but it’s tough to build a team from the ground up then to a title….fatigue usually settle in somewhere between players and coaches.
(this is not a fire nate type comment, just want to hear AK’s non homerish opinion on the matter)
I'm a Jeff Van Gundy homer, but there'd be some questions over hiring him.
Although Van Gundy is a good at involving post players in a simple, albeit fairly efficient offense centered around pick-and-rolls and isos — which’d be nice for Greg Oden and Brandon Roy, respectively — and is substantially more effective at coaching defense than Nate McMillan, his caustic personality might be much too abrasive for some guys. Yet, guys like LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy could use a swift kick in the ass now and again—especially on defense.

the last time the Knicks played defense was with JVG at the helm. so that leaves me to think that hiring someone like Tom Thibodeau who worked under JVG might be an interesting option OR hire a defensive minded assistant to push the team. Who would have thought Ray Allen and Paul Pierce can be part of a dominating D?
i’m not gonna lie, seeing BRoy jog back on D in the first quarter of yesterday’s game was weird after he said it’s about the D this year…and that they need to work on it in preseason…oh well, it’s preseason.
Also, here's comments I made back in July about this very subject.
“I’d somewhat like to swap out Nate McMillan, Dean Demopoulos, Monty Williams, Maurice Lucas, and Joe Prunty with Mike Fratello, Brian Hill, Lionel Hollins — so long as he’s unjustly canned as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies by the moronic Chris Wallace — Wayne "Tree" Rollins, and Eric Musselman, respectively, since the offense would go from moving at a snail’s pace to a complete halt.
I, however, am a fan of a pick-‘n’-roll heavy offense more than a slow-paced offense — which is what Fratello and company would bring to Portland — thus, I’d target Jeff Van Gundy first and foremost.
Of course, the Hawk offense created by Hubie Brown and later used by Fratello worked wonders during its heyday — http://www.cybersportsusa.com/hooptactics/hawk.asp & http://www.basketballsense.com/DVDs/hawk_offense.aspx — plus, it’d potentially succeed with a roster wherein its ballside wing is ball dominant, isolation happy, and doesn’t do well off the ball.
Roy is much more efficient than John Drew in the ‘70s with Atlanta and Bernard King in the ’80s with New York, too, so this could be a perfect match. Neither Wilkins brother — Gerald with New York under Brown and Dominique under Fratello in Atlanta — were as efficient during the mid-’80s as Roy is nowadays, either, so that’s also a good sign.
Admittedly, though, the Hawk offense does suit a dribble-drive, yet deferential … point guard like Andre Miller — with "Fast" Eddie Johnson making that role his own in the late-’70s — as well as a small forward with more of a power, slashing-esque game like Gerald Wallace or Josh Childress.
I, therefore, would easily tab Jeff Van Gundy over Mike Fratello for that very reason. It makes way more sense to hire a pick-‘n’-roll head coach versus a system coach to replace Nate McMillan, since the former would have an easier time adjusting to the Portland Trail Blazers present-day roster — particularly Nicolas Batum and a Steve Blake/Kirk Hinrich type spot-up three-point shooter — in its entirety."

not your profile page, but the home page with everyone else’s updates. Find a “farm town” update in the center column area. Hold your mouse over the status. On the right of the status the word “hide” should appear. Click the arrow then click the option that says hide farm town.
