Bill Schonley should call games

The man should never have been removed from his position.  He showed tonight he can still call the games.  Even if its every fortnight for half of a game, he should still be a radio play-by-play guy for the Blazers.  He's still got it.  The chemistry with Rice was amazing.   All class.

I really hope the Blazers management was listening tonight to what we've all been missing these last years.  Who can say what would have happened, but I for one would like to see the man get his chance to do what he loves for as long as he wants, because he is still good.

Let Schonz call a playoff game

Honestly...He was fumbling a lot.

Maybe he would get better with more practice, but it was obvious he hadn’t done it in a long time. Fun for the nostaglia, sure, but Wheels is the man.

If I ever listened to the radio other than preseason

I wouldn’t be able to handle Schonley. He was late on a lot of calls and was stretching stuff out and stumbling a lot. He also wasn’t able to say LMA’s name correctly.

He shouldn't have been removed when he was

But its clear that for him this is about all he can do at this point. Still, it was wonderful to hear that voice again, made me feel about 20 years younger. I only wish it had been a better game to call.

Rec, Rec, a million times, Rec.

The descriptions and the pace weren’t perfect yet, but that would come in time. I felt like I had a realistic idea of how the team was actually looking rather than the normal party line Wheels always gives.

Wheels is...

Blazers.com. Schonz is BlazersEdge. No one would look for actual analysis from the former, when the latter paints the full picture.

I love Wheels, but he’s the “new breed” of announcer. When Schonz was in his prime, I knew why we lost by 20. Now, it’s always that the other team hit a bunch of lucky shots and ours just seemed to rim out.

Schonz is from a different time. Before glossy packaging. Before Inside Edition, Sean Hannity, et al. When real men didn’t have to yell to get you to listen.

If you must mourn, mourn the passing of the era as much as the loss of Schonz’ voice 100 nights a year.

doesn;t harp about the refs over and over and over and over…..

Schonz was terrific tonight. So much talent -- retired too early.

But I must say that Wheels handled this with great class. Even if it were planned ahead of time, giving Schonz the rest of the game was the right thing to do.

I love the Schonz, but.....

it was time for him to go. He was awesome in his prime, but towards the end he was starting to fumble a lot. We got the right guy. Be happy with Wheels. He is awesome. The Schonz will always be a pillar of this franchise, but let’s not kid ourselves. For those that think Wheels should be replaced by The Schonz, you are living in the past.

Personally, I admire Bill Schonely but it's pretty clear that he jinxed the Blazers tonight.

We hadn’t lost a single home game during the pre-season with Wheels behind the radio mic. Ya gotta dance with who ya brought when the fat lady sings!

i thought it was a lot of fun

to have the schonz calling. the gf and i had our headphones on during the game – we were there! – and it was a neat thing. ol bill did miss a few calls, but at least he pronounced everyone’s name right (mike rice: “am – uhhh – omunsinsen..?”). i remember my grandpa bringing me to games at the coliseum in my very early youth, and he always had his radio tuned to schonely on 1190. fun memories for one night – i’m happy with wheels for the other 100 games.

I don't think Wheels is great (way to high and low for my tastes) but he's ok

Schonz was great and should have been allowed to continue for a few more years, but he fumbled quite a bit last night. I think he should continue to enjoy his retirement.

I 100% wish that the Portland Trail Blazers would fire all of its announcers and bring in true professionals.

My brother, who annouces high school football, volleyball, and basketball games in Washington for Comcast, is more talented than Brian Wheeler and Mike Barrett. I might be somewhat biased, but I’m still dead serious in my opinion on this issue.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

by AK1984 on Oct 15, 2009 2:42 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I disagree about Barrett

I really enjoy the Mikes as a pair. Whether Barrett is truly total team party line or just doing it to balance out Rice, it doesn’t matter as it works. You have to have someone play the straight guy when an old man starts making comments about Chris Bosh “picking out tonights entertainment” as the TV cuts to CB and a teammate pointing at something/someone in the crowd. (yes, that really happened last season)

I do agree about Wheels though. I don’t listen to the radio much, but when I do Wheels and Harvey are a bit of a grind for me. Wheels always sounds like he’s about to have a brain aneurysm, which detracts when something really good or bad actually happens. Theres just no higher-middle notch to actually take it to between a bad call and a game winner. Plus he whines too much when I’ve listened, sometimes the other team beats us honestly (and not just because “our shots weren’t falling”). Harvey just sounds like he’s trying to hard to be cool, and be heard in the broadcast over Wheels’ wonderful ad libs (“do it….do it till your satisfied” comes to mind LOL).

Doing it to balance out Rice?

That would imply that Rice isn’t twice the homer that Barrett is……which he really is. And that’s saying something considering Barrett’s clear bias.

I actually think Harvey does a decent job considering. Wheeler dominates the broadcast though and doesn’t give Antonio much time to talk. I think he’s scared that if he is even an iota more critical of the team that they’ll force him out like they did Schonz and Steve Jones.

True about the homer-ism

I was mostly addressing the sometimes overly blandness he can come across with. He has to stay pretty focused to keep the conversion moving along with the game when Rice starts making noises about some (make that any) good looking woman that pops up on the screen. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching Mike Rice in full swing during a game, which is why I’m glad Barrett is there to reign him in sometimes. Who knows how many times MB has saved Rice’s job by getting him out of the gutter and back into the game.

And I honestly find some comfort in their homerism. Its on a fans level IMO, and they do give respect to almost every other team (celtics and Lakers do not get it). Usually when they’re whining about calls, I’d already been frustrated myself. But overall I don’t mind their “yay blazers!!!!” mentality because they do point out when we make mistakes, are playing flat, or getting out-executed and give credit to the opponent for taking advantage.

Kevin Calabro

If he ever wants the Blazer’s radio job, it should be his. I like Wheels on his noon show just fine, but not calling the Blazer’s games

Barrett is fine for TV, but Rice is getting near to the place that Bill was, back in ’98

As a die hard Schonz fan...

I really enjoyed hearing him last night, but never did I think that he should be replacing Wheels. This was a nostalgia trip. Yeah, he was really rusty and no doubt some of it would come back with time. There were a few moments when he seemed to be relying on instinct rather than performing, and that’s when I heard the old Schonz. It didn’t matter. That wasn’t the point.

Schonz was great, and it is tremendous that he is still a part of this organization. The torch has been passed, and Wheels is certainly worthy to bear it.

Rip City For Bill Schonley BUT...

I’m a huge fan of Bill Schonley. Last nights game was fun because I remember growing up with that voice “being” The Blazers. It was fun, and I thought Bill did an amazing job for someone who has been away from the play by play microphone as long as Bill has been, but I wouldn’t call for Bills permanent return.

It’s like when Johny Carson retired, was he suddenly unentertaining? Did he suddenly lose his ability to interview people? No. But it was time.

From what I’ve read, I think the original “retirement” of Schonley wasn’t handled as well as it should of been. So I think it’s great that now he’s getting his due. I’d go as far as saying I think Schonley showed last night that he still has the skills, and maybe The Blazers could look at utilizing him more or in a greater capacity. But probably not as our on the air play by play man.

I suspect his love for the entire thing might cloud his judgement but if I could venture out enough to speculate, I think Schonley himself would probably admit that his days of play by play announcing have ended.

It’s not something I’m directly familar with, but again I suspect it’s far more grueling a job on many levels than people think. It’s traveling, it’s preparation and it’s trying to communicate an entire picture of an ever moving, ever changing game to a huge audience of people who usually can’t visually see the game. That’s really a younger mans challenge.

Nice to hear Bill again. Loved it. Wouldn’t mind it if The Blazers offered Bill more opportunities, interviews or interviewing or whatever…but back on the air full time? Rip City is the classic, but we’ve entered the era of Boom-Shaka-Laka….

we have a great replacement for Schonz with Wheels

Wheels is outstanding. Schonz is great too, but he’s 80 years old. He doesn’t want the gig full time any more.

How about a few home games per year? That sounds like a good idea to me – maybe a half dozen home games per year. – S.

I'll take whatever I can get!

And being realistic, I’m sure Schonz wouldn’t want to do the road trips or anything like that now. That’s just too much wear and tear, but I think it would be a very smart move by the Blazers to get him doing more games. I guarantee you their ratings would increase every time he called a game.

I like Wheels now.

But that was a lot of fun. My mind was instantly taken back to childhood listening to the games on my little radio in my bedroom. I wouldn’t mind him still doing a game or two a year. All those old catch phrases were still there too. Pickin’ em’ up and layin’ em’ down.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

The Schonz was great for a night

loved hearing the voice again. Wheels gets a little over-excited at times and yes, he’s a homer. I’m cool with that. In his heyday The Schonz used to get excited too, was definitely a homer, but just like last night, he called the Blazers out when they under-performed. I liked that about him. Like someone else said, “at the end of the game, you knew why we lost by 20”.

Refreshing. Go Blazers!

This might sound harsh, but...

I moved to Portland right before the ‘97-’98 season, which turned out to be Schonely’s last as regular play-by-play guy. I had no emotional attchment to Schonely — I only vaguely knew that he was a Blazer luminary — and thus listened to him with something approaching total objectivity. What I heard that season was an announcer who had seen better days. He was often slow to report the action (you’d hear the crowd react before he spoke), he’d misidentify players repeatedly, he’d forget to mention the score or time remaining, and he fell back on his catch phrases (yes, Wheels has ’em, too) and gooey sentimentality. He did not, in my opinion, paint a clear picture of the on-court action.

I was disappointed by the callousness with which Schonely was let go, but he definitely was struggling.

I will say this much for the Schonz: He’s far less of a crazy homer than Wheels. I wish Wheels would tone down the persecution act — the refs don’t have a vendetta against the Blazers, and when the Blazers lose, it’s usually because the Blazers played lousy, the other team played great, or both. But the flipside of that is that Wheels, beyond conveying a clearer idea of what is happening on the court, also communicates more excitement.

So: Yes, let Schonz have his special night (and he did OK last night, all considered). Yes, criticize Wheels for what deserves criticism. But bring back Schonz permanently? Nooooooo.

Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

Wheels is awesome...

His emotional involvement in the game is a plus, not a minus. This is basketball, it’s supposed to be exciting! You can sense the momentum in his voice, which is great at painting a picture in your mind of what’s going on.

There is no way that they would let Schonz come back

but there is every reason why he should come back and he should have never left.

The Blazers gave Schonz a raw deal. Rec this and every pro-Schonz comment to the core.

Wheeler has a voice of gold and obvious fan dedication, but he doesn’t deserve to carry Schonz’s golf bag. And, no, I don’t care if he fumbles calls or not.

For the first time hearing Schonz,

I was impressed. The man is 80 years old. Wheels is good, but I want to hear Schonely call a GOOD game. That was just unlucky. But I did notice a difference from him and wheels. Wheels always gets down when we’re losing and can blame it on luck. With Bill, I knew why we were losing.
