Batum as a 20 year old rookie was better than Webster as a 21 year old 3rd year man

The burden of proof is on Webster to prove he’s gotten substantially better. One game doesn’t do that for me.

I've been opening supporting RAMWO for a while...

I personally think you’re underestimating Webster. But since we can’t see the games, there’s too little info for a useful discussion.

No matter who I’d personally support, I want the best SF to start, whomever earns it in training camp and preseason.

considering how much they are resting Batum and Rudy

it seems like there is no room for a true competition during the preseason for the starting SF spot…

by cloudydays on Oct 14, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah you're right, that's the hard part

I’m guessing they’ll have to make decisions based on limited gametime for Batum, and practice competition.

Also, Nate doesn’t give up a players’ starting role due to injury. So the SF position is presumably Webster’s if he is equal to Batum instead of vice versa. Or else Nate will have changed his stance on injuries (possible).

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

I’d think that because Batum started all last year, he’d be considered the incumbent.

Technically he was substituting for an injured guy all year.

He was only starting due to Webster’s injury. Unless Webster had really struggled, it’s fair to assume Batum would have played limited minutes.

I think Nate likes to start a player slow on injury return

So I presume he came off the bench for the Toronto game.

Of course, he started the preseason game against SAC before his injury.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I think when the replacement plays better than the injured dude ever has before

The “you don’t lose your spot due to injury” rule goes out the window. At least it should. Especially when the replacement is younger and has vastly more potential.

by jksnake99 on Oct 14, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Tough line to draw though

And again, just going back to Nate’s philosophy about injuries to starters.

Perhaps this will make a fun Fanpost discussion as preseason goes along. I was being pretty philosophical. But based on Nate’s history and style, it’s reasonable to assume the starting position is actually Martell’s to lose.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

It's a bit too extreme for my taste

We’d feel lucky if, but some miracle, Batum reached Scottie Pippen levels. And for their respective sports, Pippen isn’t close to Gehrig. (I know, tough comparison on my part).

I know you feel strongly that Batum outshined Martell’s previous season. But I think you’re ignoring any improvements Martell may have had last year.

I have to ignore age as well for these purposes. Batum can learn the game just as easily off the bench, and could still start later.

Just to make it clear, I’m not angrily arguing or anything. Just thinking out loud on a point that we won’t agree on.

If Batum is outplaying Martell, I completely want him to start. But if Martell is playing even a little better, fits with the starters, and sits on the bench because Batum subbed for him last year due to injury, I’ll be thinking “hmmmm.”

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions

that's fair

The only way I’ll really lose it is if Batum isn’t getting minutes at all. If Webster starts and plays well, that’s fine. At least until we see how they look in a few real games.

by jksnake99 on Oct 14, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep. This all may be irrelevant 10 games into the season

Funny enough, it might change again 50 games into the season. (I could see either one hitting the wall this year).

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It seems reasonable to be sceptical about any improvements that Webster may have made

considering that he was injured and unable to play basketball most of that time. How could he have improved if he wasn’t healthy enough to practice?

by trk on Oct 14, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand the skepticism too

I noted it in another thread about Martell like 5 minutes ago too.

Don’t forget, Martell looked outstanding in the first game before injury last season. And he had practiced all that Summer.

I suspect we’ll see a much more mature Martell, ready to play, than any season before. That may also help him.

But I’d really like to see him play before really saying he’s ready to start or not.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly my point too.

I think people are way too fast to pass judgement in general. It is just the halfway point in the pre-season, very few things could have been determined for sure yet.

by Seijeff on Oct 14, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Would Batum have been starting if Martell hadn't been injured?

If the answer is no, it’s far from insane. There were many comments of how well we were doing “despite losing Webster”.

Don’t get me wrong, I know you prefer Batum. But based on Nate’s policy, the position is Martell’s.

Worth noting that Nate said the starters are the same as last year at the start of preseason. Nobody believed him, of course, but it set Miller off apparently. I wonder how Nate would have responded had someone reminded him that his injured starter was returning. But that’s beyond the current reporting staff.

Honestly, I think the real point is that it’s neither player’s position by default, because they could both stake a claim. So it’s not about either player needing to look a lot better than the other. It’ll simply go to the player who slightly tilts the see-saw in their direction during preseason.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I think we can safely assume

Batum would have been in Idaho for a while if Martel didn’t get hurt. Not a bad thing, but probably would have happened.

Brandon Roy, 'nuff said.

by johnv59 on Oct 14, 2009 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I also think it's a reasonable assumption.

The only thing that would have prevented that is what happened with Bayless: They thought he could learn more by staying with the team.

It’s one of those reminders (along with folks like Von Wafer) that sometimes the difference between 12th man (or NBA DL) and borderline starter is sometimes just some consistent playing time and an opening on the roster.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe

or maybe his obvious ability would have shown through and he would have earned pt. His play last year was better than any season Webster or Outlaw has put together.

by jksnake99 on Oct 14, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

As noted above, that ignores any Martell improvements

But we can discuss that in one thread if you want to cover that. I’m ok if you want to call it good too.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

That's just silly.

Webster is just as athletically gifted as Batum is. Webster may not be as good on defense, but as I recall, McMillan has a lot of faith in Webster’s defensive abilities and has said he thinks Webster can become a lock-down defender.

But since he hasn’t played in a season, I think you’ve forgotten his offensive skill-set, his defensive assignments on top opposing wing players and his over all athleticism.

Yeah Batum is good, but better than Webster and Outlaw combined? Where’s the hyperbole really coming from?

"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?
...I got better."

by Seijeff on Oct 14, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

based on the statistical metrics which I prefer

namely basketball prospectus’ WARP, statistical plus-minus, and adjusted plus-minus, Batum’s season last year was the best season any of the three aforementioned players has ever had.

by jksnake99 on Oct 14, 2009 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

PER gives the edge to Outlaw

What more is there to say?

Who would start between Outlaw and Webster? Really, the question should be phrased, “Who can start between Outlaw and Webster?” because we know Outlaw can’t and never has been a starter.

Again, I think that Batum is not as talented on offense as Webster is and Webster is considered a good defender. So saying that Batum is by far and away a huge upgrade on Martell simply because of a statistic which also says Outlaw is better when any objective observer would disagree rather proves the stat can’t be relied upon.

"She turned me into a newt!

by Seijeff on Oct 14, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he meant the two of them combined.

Pretty sure he meant he felt Batum was better than either of Martell or Outlaw’s best seasons so far, based on his preferred statistical analysis.

The words “put together” probably threw you off.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you are making something out of nothing, at least in the preseason

considering how little Batum has played, and he technically is the “incumbent” small forward, it is practically impossible to have a real “competition” between him and Webster for the starting small forward spot. I believe that Webster could potentially earn his spot back during the regular season, but how fair is it to Batum to be left with little PT to prove himself to the coaching staff and keep his job?

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

by cloudydays on Oct 14, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Honestly, I was just waxing philosophical about Nate's starter policy

I’m as surprised as you that the discussion has gone this far. :)

fair is it to Batum to be left with little PT to prove himself to the coaching staff and keep his job?

Well, rumor was that Batum was made well aware that he’d likely have his playing time cut back when Martell returned.

And it’s no more fair to Martell than Batum, in reality. (“Welcome back from injury, great preseason! Go sit over there.”) No matter what, someone will likely get the shaft to some extent.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

well it is not his choice that KP/the coaches aren't letting Batum play too much

their philosophy this preseason is to give Nic and Rudy as much rest as possible. I’m sure if there was a real competition for it, at least in the preseason, Nic would have been given more of an opportunity to prove himself…

I wonder if Nate explained the situation to Martell and told him that he has a chance to regain his starting job once the real season starts…

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

by cloudydays on Oct 14, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally agree that it's hard to judge them fairly when one can go full-speed

and the other is being kept in 1st gear.

On the other hand, they are getting a fair amount of practice together. If, say, Martell and Batum are playing equal in practice, and Martell’s numbers outshine Batum during their on court minutes (adjusted, of course), Nate may have a tough decision on his hands.

I’m enjoying the SF battle far more than the PG battle, partially because I think the PG decision is less complicated. The little discussion here leaves me feeling like that’s not just me.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no problem with Marty earning his job back in the regular season

it just seems unfair to Batum to give up his starting spot without ever really giving him extended minutes to prove himself

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

by cloudydays on Oct 14, 2009 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

It also seems unfair for Martell to lose his starting spot because his foot cracked.

If he’d successfully returned in December, this discussion would probably not be happening… he’d have returned to the starting lineup unless he was a really really good fit with the backups.

Really, it’s going to be unfair to someone no matter what. I think we’re all falling to the side of the player we’d prefer to start if all other things are equal. Just guessing there.

I don’t think I’ve noted it in this thread, but I’m actually a big Batum fan. None of this is intended as a knock on him.

Well, a whole year injury is a stretch for that policy.

In Martel’s favor is if we loose Steve’s outside shot, we should bring in Martel with the starting unit. I did go to fanfest and was pleasantly surprised how strong Martell was playing in his first “game” back. I am really just guessing Martel is the man, but have not problem if Nic is it. Whatever the coaches think, and of course we can mix it up. Play the hot hand. Great to have ’em both.

Not taking too much from the preseason...

But Roy and Alridge has been a big disappointment in their effort.

I like to at least see them not coast and get ready for the season. Pre-season is about limiting minutes and finding rhythm. But I think they have been taking it a bit too far with the coasting. Hope to see them turn it up in the last few games.

At this point, I'm changing my mind about Greg Oden and Andre Miller. They must start, pronto.

FIRST & THIRD QUARTERS

8 Minutes
C: Greg Oden
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
SF: Martell Webster
SG: Brandon Roy
PG: Andre Miller

4 Minutes
C: Joel Przybilla
PF: Travis Outlaw
SF: Nicolas Batum
SG: Rudy Fernandez
PG: Steve Blake

SECOND & FOURTH QUARTERS

4 Minutes
C: Joel Przybilla
PF: Travis Outlaw
SF: Nicolas Batum
SG: Brandon Roy
PG: Steve Blake

8 Minutes
C: Greg Oden
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
SF: Rudy Fernandez
SG: Brandon Roy
PG: Andre Miller

Although that team won’t get past the second round due to major defensive flaws, Travis Outlaw — who, along with Jerryd Bayless, must be traded for a Nick Collison type and possibly some future draft considerations — and the possibility that Brandon Roy won’t mesh with Greg Oden and Andre Miller on the court, it seems to be the best way to move forward into the regular season.

Things can still change over time, though, so nothing is set in stone.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

by AK1984 on Oct 14, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, I roll my eyes again at the micro-managing of minutes... Now, on with the show...

1. A agree with you that A WORM is a better starting lineup than RAMBO. Nic hasn’t done jack in the pre-season, plus Roy makes two.

2. How about we start thinking about alternatives to Travis Outlaw at PF. He is not now, nor has he ever been, nor will he ever be a Power Forward. We have Juwon Howard, why are we wasting time playing Travis?

3. Roy is really slumping. That doesn’t have anything to do with your minutes allocation, but I will say it again.

Roy is slumping...

and it’s not Andre’s fault either. I think Miller only took like two shots in the first half, so there should have been plenty of opportunity for Roy to make something happen.

by Nick Van Excellent on Oct 15, 2009 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not worried

He said he didn’t play much during the off-season, as he was more focused on recuperating/general fitness and conditioning. While I doubt he didn’t touch a ball “at all” as some reports have said (Brandon may have said this as well), he’s playing against high level competition, even though it is pre-season. If this is going on in December, then I’ll hit the panic button.

On a different note, the Phoenix Suns should start Amare Stoudemire and Earl Clark as its frontline.

That’s a weak defensive unit, but they’re both more capable of playing okay defensively unlike Channing Frye.

I felt bad for Frye the moment I heard they had him starting at Center opposite Oden.

All the missed shots didn’t help his situation in that game either. How many three attempts did he have anyway?

by Seijeff on Oct 14, 2009 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I think shooting 3s is the right way to use Channing

Shooting is what he does best (this game notwithstanding) and 3s are way more efficient than long 2s. I’m with AK and Cab that Clark is the better fit in the starting lineup though.

by jksnake99 on Oct 14, 2009 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think Frye can be a starter

as a Center or Power Forward unless he starts to really get aggressive in the post, which he just doesn’t seem inclined to do.

Pulling Centers away from the post to defend him is one thing, but unless he can reliably hit his shots, its not going to do anything to help the spacing inside for the Suns.

The biggest concern to me is the turn overs, and because we can't see the games

it is very hard to determine exactly why they’re having such a hard time with them.

Anyone have any plausible explanations for this problem and any ideas as to whether or not it is something that will be solved in the last four games of the preseason?

But didn’t he spend the summer actually working on his game unlike other summers? He’s made statements about being ready and this being a contract year for him. I would think that he’d try to show up mentally in that situation.

I could see it if there were a lot of new plays being called...

and people were out of position when the ball was passed to them. That’s probably natural in the first few games of the preseason, but I would think that as the rotation tightens up – as it was supposed to tonight – that the number of turnovers and type of turnovers would have been reduced pretty drastically.

It’s different with Miller, because unlike Blake, Miller can make his own shot, and is more creative, so Roy can’t assume that the PG is always looking for him.

Blake, Rudy, Nic, Juwon, Pryzzy.

Hmmmm. Not as much pop as one would like.

Observations from near courtside last night:

- Some of our guys have a ways to go, conditioning wise.
- Some odd situational lineups: Miller, Blake, Roy, LA, Oden?
- Rudy’s back spasms probably instigated said tinkering above.
- Channing Frye looked pretty aweful.
- Greg looked really, REALLY hungry to prove himself.
- Blake looks uncomfortable playing with mostly second unit guys.
- I can’t believe we won a championship in an arena which barely seats > 11k.

- Steve Nash is an amazing point guard. Some guy behind me said before the game, “Yeah, I donno about Nash. He’s a borderline hall of fame guy.” No he isn’t. That guy is going right to the hall of fame. One of the great pure passing point guards of the last 10-15 years. Not up there with Stockton but he’s pretty damn close.
- Barbosa had a beastly night.
- Our bench was outscored 48-16 by Phoenix’ bench. Not good.

Oh, and I got my picture taken with Mike Rice, Kevin Pritchard and Bill Schonely.

Regarding Hedo Türkoğlu:

Look at the bright side, Blazers fans -- you dodged a bullet. He peaked statistically two years ago. He's allegedly 30 but could be closer to 32 or 33 for all we know. (Do you trust Turkish birth certificates? And isn't it weird that he played four years of pro ball in Turkey in the 1990s?)
