October 14th JD: Those wild and crazy Euro ballers
http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/did-greek-team-threaten-to-kill-us-sports-agent-26468
Olympiakos lost both of its exhibition games against NBA teams this week, then headed to the airport after narrowly avoiding having their property seized to settle an outstanding debt. Former American NBA player Chris Morris, who played with the Greek club in 1999, is still owed a boatload of money by the club, and his agent wanted to collect.
Well this is all fine and dandy. So Olympikos is allegedly not totally forthright toward all their obligations. The part of the story that gets me is this:
On Friday, before Olympiakos was to play the Spurs, a Federal Marshall in San Antonio refused to execute a writ from a federal judge to seize the uniforms, airline tickets and other properties of Olympiakos in connection to its debt to Morris.
What the heck? Do U.S. Federal Marshals have the autonomy to just ignore a Fedreal Judge's writ? I wanna be one of them!
Sorry no poll. This is my first one of these, just because I got to work for 3 more hours and got tired of nobody else is pulling the trigger.
Oh, and to all you slackers that just hang out in here, go join the discussions on the Main Page once in a while. Yeah you might get bitten once in a while, but it builds character.

"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
Yes. I have experienced it, and it's beautiful!
So medmelon, does Olympikos have this reputation of not paying their players in general, or is the Chris Morris thing above an outlier?
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
to be honest, i had no idea
but i thought Olympiakos was managed by a couple of Greek Mark Cuban brothers, so money is not a problem.
just curious
I wonder what their beef is with Mr. Morris here? I US Federal Judge thinks they owe him the money, but I confess I do not know the story beyond what is in the article.

Tommy Lee Jones taught me all i need to know about federal marshals
what’s a puny judge compared to Agent Gerard?
I guess that's it then.
Yep. I want to be one of them.
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
All right, this is bugging me. Really.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_marshals#Duties
The United States Marshals Service also executes all lawful writs, processes, and orders issued under the authority of the United States, and shall command all necessary assistance to execute its duties.
So why didn’t the Marshal take all of Olympikos’ toys, if he had a writ from a US Federal judge authorizing him to do so? The only thing I can think of is possibly seperation of powers. The Marshals are part of the Executive. So if a writ is authorized by the Judicial, a US Marshal may, or may not, exercise the writ at his, or the Justice Department’s descretion? I know, I’m geeky.
Maybe I jsut think it would have been a better story if the Marshal did confescate Olympikos’ stuff. Does that have International Incident written all over it, or what?!

This is from Dave’s third Junk Drawer.
Note: Part of the point of these junk drawer posts involves them being filled with amusing/interesting trivia that then fades down the list and disappears each day. To that end PLEASE DO NOT rec the Junk Drawer! We don’t want the recommended fanpost window filled with five old junk drawers.
I think later people decided that reccing then unreccing the Junk Drawer was the best way to keep it at the top and having multiple Junk Drawers created in one day.
Someone always rec’s it past 7, which is unneeded, and then half the time they don’t unrec the Junk Drawer the next day. I am sick and dang tired of Junk Drawers being left in the top 5 FanPosts.
I never thought of that,
but I have rec’d a JD only once, I belleive. I will keep that in mind though Tom. I believe you have a point.
For the record, as of this post, no one has rec’d this JD. I suggest we all consider not rec’ing this one. It’s Memorial Coliseum gameday anyway, so this JD is undoubtedly lame, and not going top get much in comment traffic as game time approaches anyway.
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
I usually never forget to unrec the JD... how silly of me!
It’s down to 7, so someone else needs to come through now…
With 1600+ comments, nobody wants to click on it,
it takes 10 minutes to load, besides all the smoke that boils out of your computer.

"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
its because people have "do-the-opposite-of-what-you-want disease"
by saying how you detest JD’s being rec’d actually encourages JD rec’ing. I know it’s sad.
I did not say this. I am not here.
Yeah
I wasn’t asking folks not to rec this one. Just ranting because we need to be good stewards of the Junk Drawer.

I was thinking a fun thing to do would be to categorize BEdgers
We got old people: Southern Oregon, Lizzy, 67, Ladygonegrey
Folks who posts are frequently haughty: Jscot & AK1984
Folks who think everyone else is wrong: Timg56 & two4larue
Folks who aren’t serious or go off topic often: tominhawaii & Mortimer
Folks who are ghosts: jamon51 & Jorga
Levelheaded older guys: hurryup09, 92wastheyear, & BlazersFanSince1970
Levelheaded older dames:
Folks who come her more to socialize than talk about the Blazers:
Chicken Littles:
Stat folks: jsnake99
International folks of mystery: Norsktroll, medmelon, FFA, & amlmart1
Whatever Timbo and Sophia fall under
There are probably a lot more names and categorize to put up I gotta go potty.
I'm not haughty, I'm right and know it

When you swear in spanish it's done in reference to spanish swearing standards
and that was nothing.
In fact, we don’t have any standards.
A top politician was caught on the air (by mistake) using a vagina related swear word when talking about the Spanish national day parade :)
hahahha that's awesome
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Would a female be offended by the use of it?
There is a word in English that is very offensive to most all women, while other words are less offensive, and some are the opposite of offensive (in certain situations).
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I have never met anyone offended by the actual word
only by the rudeness of it. For instance, it’s not something that I’m allowed to say at home, but I’m can’t swear in any shape or form either
So I couldn’t say, “you have a great canzano!” without getting dumped?
I get the paper, so I don't care!
hahaha
you couln’t say that. Period. It’s use has derived into only meaning extremely boring.
But you could say “you have a great canz” without getting dumped for sure. Check the wiki link to find the root of the word.
what about "you have great canz"?
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
that was just put out there on a tee
sorry

I love that this word makes me think of Canzano.
¡Qué coñazo! It apparently means something less vulgar in Venezuela.
why are all the definitions im seeing
have something to do with being a pain or being boring?
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
hahahah i see
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
well
as it says, it can also mean “an extreme annoyance”
I could see why a politician might have dropped that during a parade
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
That's the third version of the word I've heard.

Anyone else going tonight?
It’ll be so strange to be back in the MC for a Blazer game. I think the year they opened the Rose Garden they had a preseason game there that I went to and that was the last time.
Anyway, this should be better than a winterhawks game or a graduation ceremony from a Portland Public HS. At least I’m hoping.
The jumbotron situation should be very, very interesting.
I assure you......the jumbotron in the MC is crap.
As one of the few Winterhawks/Blazers fans, I’ve probably been in the MC more than most on this board in the last couple years.
That thing is U-G-L-Y. It’s better than it was when it was first shipped in, but there’s a noticeable difference. For the sake of the people going to the game, I hope they’ve had a chance to fix it up in the Hawks’ offseason.
BTW, The Winterhawks just started one of their longer road trips of the season, but you definitely want to catch a game when they come back. The team has been awful for a few years now, but new ownership and front office management has really turned that team around. They score, they hit, they fight. It’s pretty awesome hockey to watch.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
I go to at least one w’hawks game a year, even in the lean years recently.
The jumbotron situation has been bad. What was even lamer was when I went last year and they had the projection screens set up in the corners of the stadium, above the entryways. Sad, sad, sad. Great hockey venue if they’d spruce it up.
I used to be a season ticket holder a couple years back. I stopped doing that just before they started their slide towards sub-mediocrity. But I still catch at least four or five games a year. I’ve already gone to one this season and the guys are playing like a completely different team.
If they were willing to put the money into that place, it could be made into a top notch hockey arena. But I doubt they’ll do that because they simply wouldn’t make enough of a profit off of the Hawks to justify it. Realistically, it’s better that the team is moving towards holding every game in the Rose Garden.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
It's degraded over time?
How so? I know that readerboard really well from when it first arrived. It’s basically just a large SD TV still, correct?
If you're talking about the one that came in last season...
…then, no. It hasn’t degraded. They actually did some things to improve it, but not much. You’re right in that it’s like an SD TV, but one that has a fuzzy picture and sections of it don’t work. The scoreboard that was in there when the Blazers were still there was taken out. That jumbotron was better than the one put in there last year.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
It doesnt matter w/ the jumbo tron b/c we are all so close to the court LOL
but seriously it will be funn, I imagine a MacCourt type vibe

Yes! Yes! In the face!
I don't hate anything
i strongly dislike the hundreds of thousands of bandwagon Oregon Duck fans that know nothing of whatever sport they are cheering. That only like the school , whose academic prestige has dropped tremendously, because it’s portrayed to be the state’s “nationally recognized program” and because they think Ernie Kent is the 2nd coming.. They jump on the wagon b/c Every building on campus is named “phil knights money”.
I just don’t like that type of crap. I didn’t go to the school, so why am I a fan? And since I’m not a fan Duck bandwagoners treat me like crap, so eff um, you know?

I like both big state schools
but lean towards UO. I lived part of my childhood in the Eugene area, so I root for ’em. Now excuse my while I go face Beaverton and perfrom my penta-daily prayer…
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
Fair enough, but a few points.....
Bandwagon fans happen everywhere. OSU is not immune. Yes, there’s more UO bandwagoners, but that doesn’t excuse those Beaver fans who didn’t follow the team until the late 90’s. I’ll bet you a good chunk of change that over 50% of the people that go to games at Reser Stadium have never set foot inside an OSU classroom.
Also, NO ONE likes Ernie Kent. I don’t know a single Duck fan who didn’t want him fired after last season’s debacle. For whatever reason they decided to keep him around. I know he went to the school and everything, but that’s no excuse to keep a guy who clearly has no idea how to coach in game. He’s a glorified recruiter.
Also, don’t confuse improved athletic facilities with plummeting academic quality. Just because the academics don’t receive the attention they once did, doesn’t mean they’re not still taken seriously at UO. I’ll admit, I haven’t followed it too greatly since I went there, but it sure wasn’t all kiddie classes as recent as 8 years ago. The academic facilities are still very, very good.
Finally, the thing that ticks me off the most, what is so wrong with Phil Knight providing money to the school to build academic facilities? Should he just go to Vegas and blow that $100 million he’s spent on the library and law school rather than donate it? What do you want from him exactly? Say what you will about his athletic donations, but please tell me you’re not criticizing him for paying for a new library. PLEASE tell me you’re not….
Yes! Yes! In the face!
I’ll bet you a good chunk of change that over 50% of the people that go to games at Reser Stadium have never set foot inside an OSU classroom.
Haha, check transcripts next time you’re at autzen or wherever you plan on playing basketball this year. How elitist. I love that the people who show up to OSU games are from the community. After all, it’s their tax dollars that fund those schools and programs too.
Did I say every Duck fan is a UO alumni?
Please, don’t twist the argument to forward your “UO is a bunch of elitists” agenda. I’d guess over 50% of people watching games at Autzen didn’t go to UO either. I’m simply saying that UO is not the only team that has bandwagon fans. And if you think most of the fans at Reser are from the Corvallis or OSU community, you’re deluding yourself.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
what numbers are we basing these off of?
just generalities?
how can you know for sure that 50 percent of the fans aren’t from the community? how can we know for sure?
dumb argument IMO
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
I'm pretty sure he's referring to a study he did that is based in actual research.
Otherwise, throwing out a stat like that is completely stupid and irrelevant.
I didn't say it was exact. Hence the words, "I'd guess"
Just a generality based upon personal experience. People all want to think their program is different when it comes to things like that, when usually they’re all very similar when it comes to things like their fan base.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
Also don't forget all of the kids that go to games as well
You can’t really knock a 10 yr old for not attending a class at the states land grant college can you?
I never said I was an OSU fan either
i’m a journey student who pays nothing but dollars to the school I attend, they’ll not get my undying allegiance, like say, The Blazers, who get my money and my heart, lucky basterds.
There is nothing wrong w/ Phil so magnanimously gracing the school w/ his money, it’s changed thousands of kids lives, im sure, but it’s an excuse that people often use to be into the Ducks. It’s an elite thing, Phil’s money, Phil’s reputation, Phil’s connections.

Ernie isn't bad
Oregon is never going to be a basketball powerhouse. He’s at least above average, not great by any means, but better than a lot of coaches out there. U of O fans treat him like Blazers fans treat Andre Miller.
by tominhawaii on Oct 14, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions
Here is why you are wrong.
You know how sometimes when the Blazers aren’t playing well, or when another team finds a weakness in the defense and starts exploiting it a lot? Usually after that happens, when the team comes back from halftime, there has been a correction made. Nate explains to the players in question why they’re getting beat, and then he makes adjustments to keep this from happening again.
Ernie doesn’t seem to get that part of it. He provides very few on-court instructions to the team other than yelling “MOVE!!!” over and over again.
Another troubling aspect of the Kent era…most of the players on his teams never improve year to year. At least not like normal college athletes. The same holes in their game continue to plague them their entire careers. The only players able to overcome that are guys who find themselves on NBA teams.
He was a good hire at the time because the Ducks had been relegated to a stepping stone for coaches as opposed to a destination. They needed fresh blood and someone with an enthusiasm for the university, which Kent had in spades. The teams played much better for a while and there was more energy overall. That energy is now gone. All that’s left is a lame duck coach who’s players don’t listen to him.
Oregon may never be a basketball powerhouse, but they shouldn’t expect to only make the NCAA tournament every other year.
Besides, Miller just got here. Kent’s been at UO long enough now.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
Kent is a great recruiter… but not an X&O guy… hopefully the new assistant fixes that hole

I actually don't hang any hats on anything but ancient success (before my time) and the resurgence as of late. Very excited that the program, much like football, is rebuilding itself through hard work and a smaller base of donors than many athletic depts
Craig Robinson was a genius hire.
He’s not only a good in-game coach, but he’s a solid recruiter as well. If I could have UO switch coaches with OSU in that case, I’d do it in a second.
The Ducks are screwed in hoops as long as Ernie is allowed to remain in charge. They hired Mike Dunlap who is a great x’s and o’s coach as the head assistant. Hopefully he’ll take over the reins soon.
Then the Ducks can continue to have that postseason success the Beavs can’t seem to get. Unless you count that CBI championship that is. :)

Thank you for the offer, but I'll pass.
As much as I hate Ernie, and as clear as it is that this team isn’t going to be good this year, I can’t abandon them now. Too many memories of great games in Mac Court are keeping me there.
And, as much as I love Mac Court, I wanna get some seats in that new arena. Being 6’6" and watching games in Mac Court does not go together. People must’ve been much, much shorter back when that place was built.

I'd have to think it helps.
I can’t say for certain cause I’ve never met him. From what I’ve seen of his interviews he comes across as an intelligent and charming gentleman who clearly loves basketball. He may not mention his sister at all on recruiting trips.
My guess is that it doesn’t hurt though. Sure, you’ll get the occasional recruit who’s politics would push them away from anyone in connection with Obama, but more often than not a 17 year old kid is probably thinking it’d be cool if the President came to one of his games. :)
Yes! Yes! In the face!
absolutely… it also helps knowing that they’ll most likely play a game in DC that the President will attend sometime in their college career… it’s an advantage

they both have their strengths… Robinson has the ear of the leader of the free world (who I hear is a basketball fan) Knight owns one of the most recognized sporting brands in the world… I think in recruiting Robinson wins because he can actually talk to the players, and they know if they go to OSU they will see him and hear from him… Knight is more the man behind the curtain at UO… pulling the levers and what not… recruits know he’s around, and he can make their wishes come true… but he’s the Wizard of Oz

Read this SI article.
It outlines Robinson’s old school recruiting approach and shows how he got Roberto Nelson out of LA, out from underneath the likes of UCLA, Florida, Ohio State and other big-time schools.
The article is interesting because it addresses recruiting techniques used today and uses Nelson’s recruitment as a case study of what star preps deal with.
As far as Robinson goes, the Obama connection doesn’t do anything but help his visibility to kids. It could hurt in some cases, but in general I think it helps more than it could ever hurt.
Coach Robinson is a successful smart man who has openly stated that when a kid comes to OSU, he gains access to his world of connections in both the basketball and business world. Whatever these kids want to do he can help them take that step to adulthood and I think that not only attracts good players but the right kind of players as well.
From the article…
During the summer before his senior year of high school, Nelson met Oregon State coach Craig Robinson, better known as President Barack Obama’s brother-in-law. Robinson called Nelson four times last fall and went to Santa Barbara to visit him in September. In November, Nelson spurned UCLA and Ohio State and signed a letter of intent to play for the Beavers.
How many pieces of recruiting mail did Robinson and Oregon State send Nelson?
Zero.
heck yes
i dont think it would make a recruit commit, but it definitely would “open doors” to recruits that previous OSU coaches would have no chance to talk to…
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
i tend to think that
robinson was a lucky hire. maybe the media lied to us all( which of course never happens) but it did appear that he was more of an option c or d hire that actually turned out to be better then expected.

They definitely tried to get a couple west coast guys in first.
I’d say Robinson was an option B but I give DeCarolis full credit for finding this guy. Luckily he’s panned out, but DeCarolis took so much crap for hiring him and really did take a chance on an unknown commodity in Robinson.
I myself thought it was a simple attention grab, almost solely because of the Obama connection, but he quickly put that notion to bed. He put the exact same team that went 0-18, minus the top scorer from that team, out on the floor and got markedly improved results by implementing a great system.
Great teacher, great coach and from what I can tell, a great guy too.

Jewish? Really?
I didn’t know any Jews at all.
Conservative? Compared to now, yeah. Compared to, say, the South? Not even close.
It was pretty heavily Democratic even back then. The state would go Republican on occasion, but it was for guys like Packwood, hardly a John Bircher. And Portland always went Dem.
I can tell you how to make an Excel spreadsheet that proves Portland wins 62 games this year.

Jewish and Italian - the area was more down to the river
you can see the old Synagogue and several Catholic churches.
A more modern Jewish area was between Hillsdale and Multnomah. The JCC is there, a large synagogue, several smaller temples, Goldberg’s bakery was on Vermont, and several small businesses currently in the area cater to the Jewish population

Without you out there, we're nowhere here
The school I went to didn’t appreciate creativity. I don’t know if that is indicative of all Catholic schools, but I did not like it.
The other kids were oddly naive about life in general. I felt like anytime I said anything, they would all huddle around me asking what life was like on the outside. It was strange.
The reason I went to it (I am not Catholic) was it was supposed to be a better education. The lessons during that month were at least 2 years behind what I was getting at the public school.
They also said that 80% of students went on to higher education. I deduced this was not due to the level of the education, but had more to do with parents having the; a) money to pay for school, b) value of a higher education, not the actual subject matter or manner in which it was taught.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Most Catholic institutions are wary, if not outright intolerant of
anything against patriarchial tradition.
So unless you were being artistic by making stained glass images of the Virgin Mary , I can’t imagine them being supportive.

The rate of matriculation from private schools to colleges usually have much more to do with resources and value of education, you’re right. I’ve read this several places and while it’s no knock on the quality of education provided at most private schools, money and values is what it comes down to.
CC was a pretty good place to go as far as creativity. We had a lot of music programs, art (stainglass, printmaking, ceramics and regular painting/drawing/etc.) and writing teachers that were better than many of those I had in college (Dr. Weston and Dr. Rhody!). I can’t hate on that.

"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
This looks interesting:
"1959: The Year Everything Changed," Fred Kaplan
Before smart missiles and iPhones, electronic devices choked on the hefty tubes required to connect disparate transistors. Then, in 1959, an engineer from Kansas named John St. Clair Kilby figured out how to put all the parts of a circuit on a small slab of impure silicone. Enter the microchip. Everything was compressed, and the technological world exploded — like so much else, after 1959.
Lies!!!! It was Gordon Moore! Kilby is a wanna be

Well I'm right about the Silicon, but it was Noyce, not Moore.
Noyce’s chip, made at Fairchild, was made of silicon, whereas Kilby’s chip was made of germanium.

"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
Hey! Kaplan even got the material Kilby developed his circuit on wrong.
It was germanium. That’s why he’s a wanna be. Nobody does that anymore, except discreet transistors.

Speaking of

question
what’s the point of dressing provocatively(sp?) if it’s not to attract men?
don’t wanna get in a debate or anything, just curious…
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
that reminds me of Silence of the Lambs
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
I asked my wife this question.
I was curious as well. She said that women, as she sees it, are hobbyists when it comes to dressing up. They like looking nice and like trying out clothes and what not. So it’s not totally a “hey, dudes, check it out” thing. At least not for everyone.
What is provacative? I fancy it's differenct to everyone
In the US , it would be considered socially provacative and in some place I could arrested for walking around with my shirt off.
In an indiginous culture, somewhere, this is just common place. Since women have to feed children, and they all share boobies, it’s practical to leave breasts uncovered.
So, I can’t say the way women, or myself, dress now is provacative at all.

On a more in-depth level, it's true that heterosexual men seem to ...
represent a small minority of the fashion industry; in addition, they don’t appear to give much care — at least in detail — over what’s in regarding clothing style for females. Yeah, that’s definitely a stereotype of men not keeping up with fashion. Yet, I’m too lazy not to generalize in this case.

ah
i get your point now
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Different people do different things for a variety of reasons.
Some women dress sexy for men, some women dress sexy to show off for friends or acquaintances at a get-togethers, some women dress sexy just for themselves, et cetera.
Some men dress nice for women, some men dress nice to show off for friends or acquaintances at get-togethers, some men dress nice just for themselves, et cetera.
Likewise, some women dress down causally for whatever reasons; similarly, some men dress down casually for whatever individual reason.
Next time, you should try to avoid being so narrow-minded and, well, biased on certain issues.
No matter a person’s gender, each person does whatever they do for their own individual reasons. The key word there is “individual”—there’s no doubt about it.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
well , 1. thanks for taking Jscot's spot as captain contrary
it’s much appreciated.
2. If you cared to read any more of my post from that day and any comments from this thread, you would plainly see that i agree with your main point. I wonder less about why a woman (or man I guess) .....
….dresses provocatively…..and am more curious about their expectations regarding other peoples reactions. The proverbial “low cut blouse” garners attention (regardless of the reason it was chosen).
bottom line question for me ,I guess, is….should I checking out those legs?

The point is, the reaction, the label (women w/ low cut blouse are provacative and men w/ long hair are considered un groomed and therefor unprofessional) is my issue. We shouldn’t be labeling people based on their attire

Yeah, I do think it's disingenuous — or at least extraordinarily naïve ...
— whenever either a man or a woman is openly appalled and disgusted if someone is attracted to them due to their wearing of provocative attire.
That’s something that applies to both genders and, moreover, people of any sexual orientation.
Heck, straight men will sometimes lust over an attractive woman who’s dressed to the nines; likewise, straight women will sometimes become googly-eyed over a sharply dressed man. Again, the same thing applies to homosexual men and lesbians.
It’s human nature, folks. We are who we are and there’s nothing we can do about it.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
it is not human nature to be attracted to another person's clothing

I'm guessing the way the cloth fits, and it's proximity to certain parts
may cause strong psychological triggers in some people.

Sure, in a simple way, clothes can represent the ability of one to care for a family, in a monetary way. Psychology reinforced with Darwinism/evolution, suggests that security is something we strive for and seek out. Clothes can be an expression of this sentiment. Other clothes can express many other things, which I think we strive for. I don’t think it’s wrong to be attracted to security.
This generally fits in to what I would take as an issue running through much of what’s been posted today—self expression. I like how you seek out generality and archetypes as a point of discussion. I do however, think you try to isolate yourself from your own expression—that is to say, you want to speak true from a vacume with no strings attached to yourself. The way you speak, however, is distinctly you, and part of it has to do with how you want to be seen/interpreted. I don’t quite see why you sometimes deny this, and deny your own expression.
by EvilKaramazov on Oct 14, 2009 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions
Your first paragraph
is onto something, and it furthers my original point that within evolution clothing plays a small part. It may be the current representation of what socially and psychologically humans strive for. To add to the mix biology, culture etc… which is what I was attempting to point out in the first place, clothing is not a deciding factor.
Your second paragraph, meh. I’ll just say arguing about such things, in an internet forum, is difficult and that you have the right to your own opinion. Also, yes I do generalize things to an enormous degree while posting here because it’s not really worth my time to elaborate. Or I could just admit to being lazy.

Whip It got killed at the box office, which was likely ’cause it lacked a strong prime demographic.
The film, however, did receive a lot of nice reviews according to Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, so kudos in that regard to Shauna Cross, Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page, et al.
That aside, I’m surprised more studio executives and marketing gurus didn’t recognize it had flop potential written all over it from a financial standpoint.

To the best of my knowledge, the commercials were geared toward a mixture of younger, scene/indie hipsters of both genders in the 14-24 age range. That, however, is a niche audience, as well as one that isn’t financially viable.

Stating the obvious
But diplomatic immunity doesn’t work like in the movies. One can not really obey traffic laws and park wherever one wants, but if you do something really bad (deal drugs, kill somebody, etc) you get kicked out of the country and prosecuted back home.
...or not prosecuted back home, like Ghadaffi's son....
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
Yeah, what I said is really only how it works for US diplomats abroad.
The US will kick someone out of the country, but we can’t make them prosecute. “Hey, you’d better prosecute that guy or we’ll tell you to prosecute him again!”
There was a russian diplomat who killed some people in a car crash in dc, after drinking and driving and the states couldn’t do anything other than kick him out. I never heard of anything happening to him.

unless your company’s plan is prohibitively expensive, it’s usually better to stay there… individual or family plans usually do not provide the same level of coverage as a group plan

Every year it gets worse and worse.
My company would provide a credit if I declined coverage, which would offset the costs. I think it is worth exploring. I have heard that company plans can be more expensive since the healthy people end up subsidizing the non-heathly people, which can drive the cost up.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
that’s true… when I had individual coverage, it was Regence Blue Cross/Blue Shield… it was relatively cheap and provided decent coverage… individual plans typically don’t cover preventative or mental health (or at least didn’t when I had it) so that’s something to look into if you need/want that coverage

It's pretty tiny. Just barely over half the size of the RG.
My first game was in the MC back in 1987. I sat on one of the old wood bench seats at the top of the arena bowl for a game against the Kings. At the top of some sections where there’s no room for normal seats, they have just number wood planks. My dad won the tickets on a raffle drawing from the local video rental place. Still one of my favorite memories. Got me hooked on the game.

lol Laker fans are the best
I don’t get how you can put Brook Lopez above Andrew Bynum. Not only did Bynum put up better numbers than Lopez, but he’s a defensive anchor – something Lopez is not. I recall very clearly Doc Rivers’ comment after the Celtics faced the Celtics with a healthy Kevin Garnett last season. He said that Bynum on the court made his veteran then-champion squad hesitant, afraid to go the basket and shoot shots out of their comfort zone. Not many players in the NBA affect a game that way and Brook Lopez is NOT one of them. Let me add this: Has Brook Lopez ever posted over 26ppg, 14rpg and 3bpg over a 2 week period? Bynum did just that before Kobe slammed into his knee, so, NO, Lopez is not the more valuable player.
His thesis is that because Bynum put up better numbers over a 2 week period than Lopez has, that Bynum is the better player.

i'll agree with this
It does raise an interesting question that we’ve touched on a couple times it the JD, namely, it seems people get more offended by violence done to pets, than that done to other humans—Vick vs Stallworth. I’m not sure that it is true. If it is partially true, I’m not sure the perception of innocence in pets plays a role on our heart strings. I don’t really understand any of it.

I’m not really sure I approve of seizing property belonging to foreign corporations whilst in the home country of the creditor when it’s more than arguable that the applicable law for this contract is not USA laws but rather Greek laws, unless they agreed to the contrary in the contract (which I doubt).

I skimmed it looking to see if it touched on the creative community, and how hard it’s been hit by the downturn… they almost did talking about the young people… but not quite.
I find it interesting that they talk about the manufacturer closing up shop and losing 100-150 jobs for most of these types of articles, but you rarely here about the creative firm that lays off 80% of it’s staff… which where I used to work amounts to 250 and counting

That’s a different debate, but I have trouble with this statement. And I’ve jested in some amazingly inappropriate ways. Doesn’t make it right. I have trouble with the idea that ANYTHING can be funny in the proper context.
I agree w/ ark here: I think if something is offline it becomes a stigma. Swearing is only swearing in context. Zach, in here, means something different than on the streets. Everything, in my opinion is about context. In context suggesting people eat their children is a very powerful tool for change.

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
I get what you are saying in principle
But I don’t think I even want to know what context makes it funny to talk about abusing others. And I don’t think ‘swearing’ ever matters, personally, so this may not be the best example.
Satire can be a powerful tool, but I don’t see the Swiftean comparison to make to DV.
I think it’s your sentiment exactly, that points to how satire can be a very dangerous thing, especially if done incorrectly.
In the end though, I think sometimes all we have in life is humor. And humor has a profound power to connect people and to deflate that which needs perspective. As the saying goes, “we could all learn to laugh at ourselves”…
by EvilKaramazov on Oct 14, 2009 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions
I do not disagree about the sentiment about humor. I can probably laugh at any horrible thing that happens to me. I’m quite apt at it even. However, the idea of making satire at the expense of someone else’s profound suffering is still problematic to me.

Nope, everything is open to humor in some way, shape, or form.
Folks who claim otherwise are uptight, prudish tyrants—and that’s that!
Then again, people have the right to be “uptight, prudish tyrants.” I’ll call those people out for their idiocy, though. Hyperbole aside, stuffy people who are hypersensitive to humor and spout bullcrap known as political correctness create a slippery slope that must be immediately deiced by open-minded folks such as myself.
Remember, words are words—end of story.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
All is good in the world.
This is the exact answer I would expect of a sociopath. Thanks for confirming my opinion about my opinion.

Why should someone conform their beliefs for a malcontent?
Oh, and “sociopath” is a pretty strong word, as well as an unfair insult that devalues your opinion in my book.
In all seriousness, the adage about how folks who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones applies to ignorant blowhards such as yourself.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
by AK1984 on Oct 14, 2009 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Now, who is being sensitive?
I don’t think anyone should conform their beliefs to anyone. I do think that humans should have an internal compass that makes it clear that somethings are not funny and being “politically correct” has nothing to do with needlessly bringing harm to others with the words we use. I know exactly what it is like to stand behind the indignation of supposed open-mindedness in order to ignore even a modicum of empathy for the effects that words can have on others. But I couldn’t keep that up, other people’s suffering hurts me too.
And, in case you were too ‘hypersensitive’ to pick up on this, I am not using sociopath as a personal attack. I actually think you have a problem. Sociopathy might be an antiquated and poor word to mean what I mean (a pathological absence of human empathy), yet it still perfectly fits.
Glad I got your blood boiling, senior uptight & prudish. If a random word like ‘sociopath’ has this effect on you, I wonder what the effect of a domestic violence “joke” on one of those hypersensitive victims of domestic violence would be.
Since I actually am open-minded and don’t particularly care about your “open-minded” consideration of my “opinion”, my “ignorance”, or my “blowhard”-ary, I just think that you should pay attention to the degree to which your arguments are entirely removed from the emotional context of others. You think this makes you logical, but it actually makes you a sociopath or at least an individual who is acting in a sociopathic manner. And none of this is a potshot. Seriously. I don’t like seeing otherwise intelligent and reasonable people going down the road towards being a sociopath. Call me names if you need to, but I seriously think that you might want to reconsider how you tackle the world around you.
But you know what, this rocks! Now, I want to know if I have ever been flagged before. I also am glad that you finally noticed me calling you a sociopath. If you were to do a search of ‘idoltime sociopath’ here, you would find four other comments where I explicitly or implicitly refer to you as a sociopath.
by idoltime on Oct 14, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
actually, I was wrong about one thing
Only three of those four previous references to ‘idoltime sociopath’ were about you. One of them was a joke about something Roybot said.
Yes, I overreacted to your comments. I,therefore, fell ...
victim to taking the word — in this case being "sociopath — of someone who’s likely an ignorant jackass on such clinical matters.
In the end, I’ll take ownership of my hypocriscy. With that taken care of here, let’s hope that you take ownership of your ignorance and insulting tone.
Anyway, let’s return to the original topic at hand after that long-winded tangent by us. Regarding humor, any and all subjects should be available to be made into jokes.
For reference, I’m talking specifically about jokes and not personal, perhaps defamatory attacks. I hope you can tell the indisputably enormous difference between those two things, but upon reading your above post I’m not holding my breath.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
Interesting way to be ignorant
Any clinician still using the term ‘sociopath’ to refer to anything is a twit and horribly outdated. Sociopathy isn’t even part of the DSM-IV. So you would have to do better than that if you really are trying to make any kind of point with this.
As for myself, I own no ignorance in this matter. If my tone came off as insulting, I sincerely apologize. I actually hold you in very high regards amongst frequent posters. Honestly, I just think that you have a problem with emotional context. You can continue to claim that I am ignorant to something or that I am a jackass or anything else. I am sure that you are more than capable of rationalizing anything I say away as pointless. That’s okay by me.
I think that humor/jokes/wit/puns/etc. that cause extreme hurt to another are never funny and not the material of proper humor. I actually think that making jokes about something like DV is far worse than whatever a ‘defamatory attack’ on this matter would be. (Perhaps blaming the victim?). It’s the difference between being a jerk and lacking empathy for how one’s words can really hurt someone for.. what? the chance at a chuckle? That feels more dangerous to me.
You can think whatever you want about the matter. I certainly wouldn’t want you to hold your breath. Your lack of clarity on this matter has already been demonstrated. Odd, because I never find you lacking for clarity, just empathy.
All right, I've cooled down a notch and am not ...
letting my emtions get in the way of logic. It’s time to reboot and start this discussion anew.
I’m in agreement with your first , second, and last paragraphs.
I was wrong to call you an “ignorant jackass,” as well as overreacted when I flagged your post. That was just a spur of the moment outburst whereby my anger and frustration got the best of me, which happens to all of us sometimes.
You’re right that I’m not big on empathy — even though I’m not totally devoid of harboring human emotions and relating to others — but that’s a far cry from being a sociopath.
Now, as you mentioned, the word sociopath is an antiquated term medically. Even in the broadest definition, however, I don’t fit that bill. Today, the closest thing I saw to sociopathy on here was that thankfully deleted photo of some scumbag kicking a defenseless cat.
Regarding your third paragraph, we do possess a huge philosophical difference on what is and isn’t humor. That’s fine, though, since we’re all unique with our beleif systems.
To me, however, a joke is a joke, since it’s totally impossible to be inoffensive to everyone. All right, some subject matters are more touchy — such as domestic violence and rape, which are abhorrenet acts — and jokes about said subject matters are wretched and contemptible to many people.
Yet, even if someone tells a joke deemed vulgar by a wide range of people, that doesn’t mean he or she should be castigated for it. Rather, those of whom who are offended should just ignore it and focus on the important things in their lives instead of letting their emotions get the best of them.
As we can see, I came across terribly as a huffy jerk when I took offense to your jab at me being a “sociopath.” Instead of getting all riled up like a petulant child, I should’ve just shrugged it off and taken it in stride. While being unruffled by critcism may seem detached to you, I feel tremendously better when I don’t get excessively pissed off like I did earlier today.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
great response
I will concede that sociopath was a very strong term to just throw at someone. Even if I knew you better than just off of a series of postings here, it’s a harsher word (even antiquated) than is necessary. At worst, what I could have said instead is that some of your argument/discussion points as I have experienced them have sociopathic traits to them, which is still just an excessive way to say that there is a distinct lack of empathy in some of your viewpoints.
What’s interesting is that I cannot really argue with your points about humor. I would never want to accept another’s sense of decency as the meter by which I gauge the appropriateness of humor I make. I hate everything about regulated morals.
That being said, from a personal point of view, I know that there are some subjects (generally related to abhorrent acts as you mentioned) I would never consider material for a joke or humor of any kind. Of course, there is a massive gray area where individuals could not agree about was or was not appropriate.
My point is that this is a very specific example of my view point of morals in general. I don’t believe that they should or can be regulated. I believe there is a lot of a cultural relativism to accept in how different cultures would judge different acts just as different people and groups will have different viewpoints on decency, vulgarity, and obscenity in terms of humor. I am with you — there is no reason to castigate someone for making an joke (or statement) even viewed as obscene by many people. But I don’t consider humor that insensitively hurts specific groups who have experienced extreme acts at the hands of another to be obscene, vulgar, or even just in bad taste. But I think that it is wrong to be dismissive of another person’s pain, which cannot be compared to another’s sense of decency being “violated”. Like my views on morals, I wouldn’t want to regulate this, but I have a hope that people can learn to be more aware that there are some words that will be much more than words to some people, and that it is a very humane thing to keep some of these things in mind when making jokes.
And no problem on the flagging. I am actually dying to know what happens next. I’ve never even gotten a warning e-mail yet, and I wonder if this might get me one.
Oh yeah, and I don’t know you so what I’m going to say you can take or leave. For myself, I find that being more aware and regulating how I appreciate and integrate emotions more consistently into how I process things helps me be less likely to have emotional outbursts. I am rarely emotionally detached from my situation, so I am more likely to not be taking by surprised when I find myself pissed off.
We've reached a mutual understanding.

My wife has bad knees.
they will dislocate for no reason at all. when they do, she hits the ground hard and fast. (i have tremendous reaction speed and I can come nowhere near catching her.) When she was pregnant with our daughter, she fell and fractured her left eyebrow. the whole left side of her face was discolored for weeks. Virtually everywhere we went people would try to approach her about getting her help to get away from me, her presumed abusive husband. I know just how you felt. She ended up yelling at a group of people at a restaurant over it. That was kinda funny.
Dude!, what's wrong with you? Why you gotta be holding a corn dog when I go for a high-five??
My wife actually joked about it once....and got me in trouble.
She had an infection on her chin from a cut she got when she slipped on some ice during the big snow/ice storm thingy. Because of that, she had a big, nasty bandage on her chin.
A couple days later, we were getting a delicious papa murphy’s pizza. While sitting on the bench and waiting, I tried to wrap my arm around her. She proceeded to say, “No! No! Ahhh!” while cowering away. She did this any time I even moved towards her. People turned and looked at me like they wanted to kick my ass. When they stopped looking, she would smile and giggle at me. THAT wasn’t cool at the time, but I suppose I can see how it was funny now.
Still, I’m not gonna try to get away with any of those jokes any time soon.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

Dammit, you shouldn't apologize for a single thing here.
If someone is overly offended by off-color humor, then that’s their own fault for being a hotheaded, thin-skinned whiner. For whatever unfortunate reason, many people on both the left and right don’t comprehend the difference between words and actions. Anyone who unjustly persecutes another individual for simply a use of words — particularly when those words are meant in jest and taken out of context — is an intolerant zealot.

it’s the art of movie making that I think you speak of though. Most of the road is dialogue; directing would be the most important to convey the relationship of the story. I think it you made the movie to be an homage to the book, it could be done. I think if you make the movie, to be a part of the american diet, it will be bloated and grotesque.

From CNN’s website:
Sendak, who was a producer on the film, was involved early on in the project and urged Jonze, who he calls a “genius,” to add his own mark to the legendary story.
“He has all the qualities that are unspoiled by Hollywood,” Sendak told CNN at the film’s New York premiere Tuesday night. “He’s a real artist.”
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I don’t like the sounds of that at all. I’d want to know what he considers a fake artist, and also what’s wrong with the story that he needs to “add his own mark”. This kind of thinking is why i hate all the Lord of the Rings movies. I’m hoping at some point in my life the BBC takes over the project and releases a movie set in the same way they did “I, Claudius”

I loved that series.
"Aneurysm".
When Outlaw wins a game on a last-second shot, it’s called an "annthefaneurysm". QualityPie
I'm optomistic
from what i’ve read, the only part Sendak didn’t agree with in the movie was that the room didn’t physically turn into the jungle

Wowzers
Jacking this from CroRupt.
I get it. The city wanted Oden, a big affable center on a team full of guards and swingmen, and in an area that loved basketball and wanted a player who was likable, especially after the Jailbazers years. I get that.
But anyone who’s seen Kevin Durant play would have instantly known that he was gonna be a cold blooded killer who loves basketball, just isn’t always comfortable with media.
I hope Oden stays healthy, but his ceiling is pretty low. I’d be content with him putting up 12/11/2 for his career, and that’s sad. Durant? 25/7/4 easy for his career, and that’s taking into account his first and last years, not just his prime.
I know Portland had too many guys at the spot, but you pick the best avaialble and make it work or trade off pieces for draft picks to keep the team young over a period of time. That’s what Oklahoma City has done. Now OKC has a sick nucleus (even Harden, who I’ve seen play several times and am not impressed with. He’s good, but I can’t see him really being great) of young guys who can play together for the next half decade at least (if their contracts can match up).
Good luck Portland, but I think your time is over.

who doesn’t love to see 115 point games, great passing and lots of fast breaks? However, this guy is throwing stones from a house of glass. If we want to talk about teams that have made the wrong moves lately the Suns would be near the top of that list. Selling draft picks, poor trades, moving away from SSOL, not retaining D’Antoni………
The suns have sold away serious talent.

I have a buddy who is a big Suns fan. If I ever say “Steve Kerr” or “Robert Sarver” I am guaranteed to hear him go off for the next 10 minutes about how they screwed everything up.
They were positioned pretty nicely to have a title window for the next 10+ years, and they closed it on themselves in 3
Great story by a fan call-in tonight on 95.5 the game.
Ruth Simpson died this past week, her grandson called in with this story.
She used to tally the scores and the fouls by hand as she listened to Schonely call the game. But Schonely would often not say who committed the fouls. So she wrote him a letter with the above complaint.
The next game Bill named all the players regarding fouls and also related the story over the air how he was chastised by the letter from Ruth.
Ruth told this story the rest of her life.

i love outlaw
but he sucked tonight, roy and miller’s spacing was not good, the whole offense is not running smoothly, nate’s rotations was zached up, martell, is still martell, not that great at any one thing, even shooting, oden is just as new.oden has been described, the defensive intensity besides oden’s was for zach.

Dude, Outlaw was so bad.
He literally shot us out of the game in the third quarter. Every damn time he had the ball, something bad happened. Turnovers, bricks, just terrible. I’m sorry, but you can’t have a guy on your team that can sabotage a game like that. And he does it a lot.

It's so nice to get some in-person feedback
Too bad we can’t review the game. But then again, perhaps that’s good.
Aren't you supposed to be REALLY PISSED OFF that you couldn't watch?
At this point I’m glad the games aren’t on TV. I think I’d just obsess about mistakes.
that's what i'm doing
it sucks, i know nate was just working out kinks of combos that he needs to work out, guys like martell really need this time to adjust….
14736251
Heh, oh yeah, I forgot to be outraged.
If all these games were televised, this site would be a mess. Or, some would argue, a bigger mess.
Could you imagine the posts about Brandon and Outlaw? Or the Martell vs Batum posts?
It’s busy enough just based on what’s being reported.
random thoughts from in person viewing
1) Oden is a beast. I kept asking, “Where the heck is he?!” when he was out and Joel was in. Last year it was a lot of the opposite.
2) Blake made a nice 3/4 court pass to a streaking LMA for the jam. Andre missed that same pass in the preseason opener. Andre is still far superior at this sort of thing, I just kinda’ got a chuckle out of it.
3) Blake is afraid to shoot. He drives to the lane and then turns around and hucks it to someone on the perimeter and the play starts over….or Broy will drive and kick to Blake and Blake won’t take the 3….he looks tentative.
4) Martell was bangin. Everyone. I mis-took him for Aldridge on one play because he was down on the block. He tried dunking over Amare and it was ridiculous…he fell super hard and jumped right up. He is dying to just pack one HARD on someone. He tried the same thing in the pre season opener…he’ll get one pretty soon and it will be SICK. I hope it’s a reg. season game so we can see it again and again on replay.
5) Speaking of replay, there was no replay. I missed the Rose Garden and the jumbo video board.
6) The crowd still gets the most excited for Rudy. As soon as he was off the bench to check in, the whole places sounds like it’s booing, but you’re just hearing the uuuuu in Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudy.
7) Terry Porter played celebrity horse and drained back-to-back corner 3s…he was 4/5 on the night. No one else could hit squat (Bobby Gross, ’Tone, Gavin Dawson, Michael Holton)
8) The MC is small. Dang. The cheer men could throw t-shirts by hand into the top rows without too much effort.
9) Nash still knows how to move the roundball. He gets up and down the floor, and he hit a couple big shots in the fourth that look like he learned from Dirk. Looked like zero percent chance of going in and * swish *
10) LMA and Amare will both be all-stars. Too much talent not to be.

It’ll be very hard for KP to ever trade Rudy. There may be a fan revolt.
Martell on the fastbreak (twice) in the first quarter is what made the game worth going to, IMO
otherwise, everything was pretty much just ho-hum.

team D
It started with Nash of old, Nash really intimidates our, every blazer is transfixed, hypnotized by that little cannuck, and he was hitting, EVERYTHING. Barbosa, Richardson, and everyone else got easy peasy threes too, the team D wasn’t there, and I wished batum would have played more than Outlaw, Blake, or Martell.
14736251
I wasn't worried about Rudy or Batum's minutes
They’re intentionally limiting them.
I’m more surprised about Bayless. I mean, it’s preseason. It makes me wonder if something happened in practice that’s limiting his playing time.
nate was trying to win
at least it looked like it….we play hard all the way, down to fouling in the last 10 seconds. Never saw anyone outside our top 10 players. Bayless ain’t in the top 10. I did see him run to the locker room middle of the 3rd quarter…not sure what that was about. He came back a few mins later.

Starvin’ Marvin was the kindling that ignited this raging blogosphere bonfire. It wasn’t his fault, though, because many of us provided the proverbial wood to keep it going strong throughout the day. But in good news, Oden, Miller, and Webster were amazing tonight. Roy half assed it like usual in the preseason, but Aldridge looked good. I won’t comment on Outlaw again. Ugh. Good, competitive game. Terry Porter can rock the three, still.

timmay and I were arguing RAMBO vs. RAMWO over in the game thread
I just think Batum’s a significantly better player now, and a much better prospect. KP2’s projections love Batum and have Webster at replacement level.
I just don’t think Webster is very good— I think he’s one of those guys that fool you into thinking he’s better than he is.
I don't know who KP2 is, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't care even if I did.
Webster looks way better, I guess that’s all I can say. Opinions are different, obviously.
meh. i am the anti-stat-nerd.
i judge based on emotion and gut instinct. which obviously doesn’t mean much, but it does mean i wouldn’t care what someone’s advanced TS% is. (does that mean something? i think i made it up)
my opinion is that eyes are naturally biased and often wrong
While advanced basketball stats are very imperfect (but improving), they allow us to set our emotions aside when making evaluations. You can’t use them exclusively, but they are better than the biased eyes of fans.
Tin, you ought to kive KP2 a try
I’m not a stats nerd at all, but I think he’s interesting. He gives me stuff to look for when I’m watching.

by southern oregon on Oct 14, 2009 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions
TS% is True Shooting Percentage, which isn't that advanced of a stat in the grand ...
scheme of things. I can see people being wary of so-called all-encompassing stats like PER (John Hollinger), Win Shares (Basketball-Reference), Wins Produced (Dave Berri), Roland Rating (Roland Beech), et cetera. That notwithstanding, amalgamated stats like TS% and per-minute/pace-adjusted stats like TRB% or AST% are simple to understand by even the most novice observer.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.

by Cablinasian on Oct 15, 2009 12:14 AM PDT up reply actions
Um, the thing is each all-encompassing stats weighs stuff differently.
For example, someone with an outstanding adjusted +/- and average to below average PER is probably a standout defender. Kirk Hinrich and Delonte West fit that bill.
Someone with a competely god-awful adjusted +/-, great PER, and good Wins Produced is probably a selfish offensive player who plays abysmal defense. Kevin Durant and Rudy Gay fit that bill.
Someone with a horrible adjusted +/-, decent PER, and wonderful Wins Produced is probably an efficient offensive player who plays abysmal defense despite grabbing tons of defensive rebounds. Troy Murphy fits that bill, while Rasheed Wallace would be the opposite of him.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.

I hear ya
Sometimes we’ll need more defense. Statistically, we killed last year with Blake/Roy/Rudy/Aldridge/Joel last year so I think adding an improved Oden and a better PG to that mix will make Roy/Rudy even deadlier against a lot of teams.
I'm with you on Rudy Fernandez and Brandon Roy finishing games, but it'd ...
nice if Brandon Roy would pick up his effort defensively. If not, Fernandez could very well depart via trade come 2011 or thereabout.

I have a lot of feelings about all this darn negativity floating around.
Following a team is fun. Let’s leave it that way.
It’s preseason. If we can’t take good nuggets from Oden’s performance, we can’t worry about Roy either.
Schonz is awesome, but he had a little ol’ man Simpson in his voice tonight.
Marty is a better fit in the starting lineup.
Andre is awesome.
Brandon is a notoriously slow starter. Last year and the year before he was playing really poorly to start the year.
Greg. Oden. :)

Jake, I gotta say… you were very, very negative tonight. You can’t discredit all the good and freak out about the bad.
I understand where you’re coming from with the Batum thing. Really, I do. He’s a better player (as far as we known from past years). Basketball is fit, though… and for Andre to fit in the starting unit, it’s a lot more effective having Martell in there. Also, is it a big surprise that Martell’s projection is so low? He was a pretty poor player last time he played two seasons ago. It’s hard to project off of data that old when he was looking pretty good last fall. We just don’t know what we have… so shouldn’t we applaud Nate for playing the question mark?
You were one of the people that harped on the site that if Oden becomes Oden, we’ll take the next step and be a really, really scary team. I understand that you didn’t promise titles. But you did say that Oden’s future was the largest factor going forward.
So let’s stop worrying about trivial stuff like Batum or Marty, who gets the first shift… I’m not sure it makes that huge of a difference who starts at that position.
Let’s be happy that Oden is motivated, confident ,and playing pretty well… albeit in preseason.
I don’t say this to pick you out and say that you’re wrong… on the contrary, you are factually right on many of your statements; however, let’s look at the positive as well as the negative. If Oden is this Oden, we’ll be freaking good whether Martell or Nic has their name announced before tipoff.

it’s all part of the roller coaster ride we call the “NBA Season”.
The fact is that, barring any major injuries, Portland will be among the top 4 teams in the Western Conference and will be in the Playoffs at the end of the year.

that was in the first quarter.

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Not to defend Jake
But he’s never been a glass half-full kind of guy.

it wasn't based on that one game
Its a concern I’ve had for quite some time— that Nate can’t coach a title contending D. Who knows if that concern will turn out to be unfounded or not.
No, you're right about that.
Nate McMillan is an idiot tactian—especially on defense.
Frankly, McMillan will need to someday be fired for this to be a true title sqad.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
yeah that comment wasn't necessary or accurate
Our D was pretty abysmal much of last year but improved a lot.
I should have written “I’m worried our D won’t be significantly improved.”
I remain hopefull that we can discuss the "problem" at SF in a rational way
Certainly other teams coaching staff’s will be discussing the “problem”.

I'm pretty sure I'd love to hang out with you and a lot of the other BEdgers
My anti-old stance has more to do with 70+ broadcasters and dictators that won’t go away or folks that think older is always better.
At my father in law’s funeral, I had a great time talking to a woman in her 90’s. She had a lot of great stories.
