October 14th JD: Those wild and crazy Euro ballers

http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/did-greek-team-threaten-to-kill-us-sports-agent-26468

Olympiakos lost both of its exhibition games against NBA teams this week, then headed to the airport after narrowly avoiding having their property seized to settle an outstanding debt. Former American NBA player Chris Morris, who played with the Greek club in 1999, is still owed a boatload of money by the club, and his agent wanted to collect.

Well this is all fine and dandy.  So Olympikos is allegedly not totally forthright toward all their obligations.  The part of the story that gets me is this:

On Friday, before Olympiakos was to play the Spurs, a Federal Marshall in San Antonio refused to execute a writ from a federal judge to seize the uniforms, airline tickets and other properties of Olympiakos in connection to its debt to Morris.

What the heck?  Do U.S. Federal Marshals have the autonomy to just ignore a Fedreal Judge's writ?  I wanna be one of them!

Sorry no poll.  This is my first one of these,  just because I got to work for 3 more hours and got tired of nobody else is pulling the trigger.

Oh,  and to all you slackers that just hang out in here, go join the discussions on the Main Page once in a while.  Yeah you might get bitten once in a while,  but it builds character.

Yes. I have experienced it, and it's beautiful!

So medmelon, does Olympikos have this reputation of not paying their players in general, or is the Chris Morris thing above an outlier?

to be honest, i had no idea

but i thought Olympiakos was managed by a couple of Greek Mark Cuban brothers, so money is not a problem.

just curious

I wonder what their beef is with Mr. Morris here? I US Federal Judge thinks they owe him the money, but I confess I do not know the story beyond what is in the article.

All right, this is bugging me. Really.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_marshals#Duties

The United States Marshals Service also executes all lawful writs, processes, and orders issued under the authority of the United States, and shall command all necessary assistance to execute its duties.

So why didn’t the Marshal take all of Olympikos’ toys, if he had a writ from a US Federal judge authorizing him to do so? The only thing I can think of is possibly seperation of powers. The Marshals are part of the Executive. So if a writ is authorized by the Judicial, a US Marshal may, or may not, exercise the writ at his, or the Justice Department’s descretion? I know, I’m geeky.

Maybe I jsut think it would have been a better story if the Marshal did confescate Olympikos’ stuff. Does that have International Incident written all over it, or what?!

You know what really pisses me off?

This is from Dave’s third Junk Drawer.

Note: Part of the point of these junk drawer posts involves them being filled with amusing/interesting trivia that then fades down the list and disappears each day. To that end PLEASE DO NOT rec the Junk Drawer! We don’t want the recommended fanpost window filled with five old junk drawers.

I think later people decided that reccing then unreccing the Junk Drawer was the best way to keep it at the top and having multiple Junk Drawers created in one day.

Someone always rec’s it past 7, which is unneeded, and then half the time they don’t unrec the Junk Drawer the next day. I am sick and dang tired of Junk Drawers being left in the top 5 FanPosts.

I never thought of that,

but I have rec’d a JD only once, I belleive. I will keep that in mind though Tom. I believe you have a point.

For the record, as of this post, no one has rec’d this JD. I suggest we all consider not rec’ing this one. It’s Memorial Coliseum gameday anyway, so this JD is undoubtedly lame, and not going top get much in comment traffic as game time approaches anyway.

We got old people: Southern Oregon, Lizzy, 67, Ladygonegrey
Folks who posts are frequently haughty: Jscot & AK1984
Folks who think everyone else is wrong: Timg56 & two4larue
Folks who aren’t serious or go off topic often: tominhawaii & Mortimer
Folks who are ghosts: jamon51 & Jorga
Levelheaded older guys: hurryup09, 92wastheyear, & BlazersFanSince1970
Levelheaded older dames:
Folks who come her more to socialize than talk about the Blazers:
Chicken Littles:
Stat folks: jsnake99
International folks of mystery: Norsktroll, medmelon, FFA, & amlmart1
Whatever Timbo and Sophia fall under

There are probably a lot more names and categorize to put up I gotta go potty.

Anyone else going tonight?

It’ll be so strange to be back in the MC for a Blazer game. I think the year they opened the Rose Garden they had a preseason game there that I went to and that was the last time.

Anyway, this should be better than a winterhawks game or a graduation ceremony from a Portland Public HS. At least I’m hoping.

The jumbotron situation should be very, very interesting.

by ArbyOSU on Oct 14, 2009 8:47 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I assure you......the jumbotron in the MC is crap.

As one of the few Winterhawks/Blazers fans, I’ve probably been in the MC more than most on this board in the last couple years.

That thing is U-G-L-Y. It’s better than it was when it was first shipped in, but there’s a noticeable difference. For the sake of the people going to the game, I hope they’ve had a chance to fix it up in the Hawks’ offseason.

BTW, The Winterhawks just started one of their longer road trips of the season, but you definitely want to catch a game when they come back. The team has been awful for a few years now, but new ownership and front office management has really turned that team around. They score, they hit, they fight. It’s pretty awesome hockey to watch.

by LeafHawk on Oct 14, 2009 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I go to at least one w’hawks game a year, even in the lean years recently.

The jumbotron situation has been bad. What was even lamer was when I went last year and they had the projection screens set up in the corners of the stadium, above the entryways. Sad, sad, sad. Great hockey venue if they’d spruce it up.

by ArbyOSU on Oct 14, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I used to be a season ticket holder a couple years back. I stopped doing that just before they started their slide towards sub-mediocrity. But I still catch at least four or five games a year. I’ve already gone to one this season and the guys are playing like a completely different team.

If they were willing to put the money into that place, it could be made into a top notch hockey arena. But I doubt they’ll do that because they simply wouldn’t make enough of a profit off of the Hawks to justify it. Realistically, it’s better that the team is moving towards holding every game in the Rose Garden.

by Timmay! on Oct 14, 2009 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you're talking about the one that came in last season...

…then, no. It hasn’t degraded. They actually did some things to improve it, but not much. You’re right in that it’s like an SD TV, but one that has a fuzzy picture and sections of it don’t work. The scoreboard that was in there when the Blazers were still there was taken out. That jumbotron was better than the one put in there last year.

They jump on the wagon b/c Every building on campus is named “phil knights money”.

I just don’t like that type of crap. I didn’t go to the school, so why am I a fan? And since I’m not a fan Duck bandwagoners treat me like crap, so eff um, you know?

by G_dubs on Oct 14, 2009 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough, but a few points.....

Bandwagon fans happen everywhere. OSU is not immune. Yes, there’s more UO bandwagoners, but that doesn’t excuse those Beaver fans who didn’t follow the team until the late 90’s. I’ll bet you a good chunk of change that over 50% of the people that go to games at Reser Stadium have never set foot inside an OSU classroom.

Also, NO ONE likes Ernie Kent. I don’t know a single Duck fan who didn’t want him fired after last season’s debacle. For whatever reason they decided to keep him around. I know he went to the school and everything, but that’s no excuse to keep a guy who clearly has no idea how to coach in game. He’s a glorified recruiter.

Also, don’t confuse improved athletic facilities with plummeting academic quality. Just because the academics don’t receive the attention they once did, doesn’t mean they’re not still taken seriously at UO. I’ll admit, I haven’t followed it too greatly since I went there, but it sure wasn’t all kiddie classes as recent as 8 years ago. The academic facilities are still very, very good.

Finally, the thing that ticks me off the most, what is so wrong with Phil Knight providing money to the school to build academic facilities? Should he just go to Vegas and blow that $100 million he’s spent on the library and law school rather than donate it? What do you want from him exactly? Say what you will about his athletic donations, but please tell me you’re not criticizing him for paying for a new library. PLEASE tell me you’re not….

I’ll bet you a good chunk of change that over 50% of the people that go to games at Reser Stadium have never set foot inside an OSU classroom.

Haha, check transcripts next time you’re at autzen or wherever you plan on playing basketball this year. How elitist. I love that the people who show up to OSU games are from the community. After all, it’s their tax dollars that fund those schools and programs too.

by ArbyOSU on Oct 14, 2009 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did I say every Duck fan is a UO alumni?

Please, don’t twist the argument to forward your “UO is a bunch of elitists” agenda. I’d guess over 50% of people watching games at Autzen didn’t go to UO either. I’m simply saying that UO is not the only team that has bandwagon fans. And if you think most of the fans at Reser are from the Corvallis or OSU community, you’re deluding yourself.

i’m a journey student who pays nothing but dollars to the school I attend, they’ll not get my undying allegiance, like say, The Blazers, who get my money and my heart, lucky basterds.

There is nothing wrong w/ Phil so magnanimously gracing the school w/ his money, it’s changed thousands of kids lives, im sure, but it’s an excuse that people often use to be into the Ducks. It’s an elite thing, Phil’s money, Phil’s reputation, Phil’s connections.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great program… hard as hell, but I don’t know how it stacks up to the Ivy league at this point… when i was there, we were always comparing ourselves to UC Berkley

Ernie isn't bad

Oregon is never going to be a basketball powerhouse. He’s at least above average, not great by any means, but better than a lot of coaches out there. U of O fans treat him like Blazers fans treat Andre Miller.

by tominhawaii on Oct 14, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here is why you are wrong.

You know how sometimes when the Blazers aren’t playing well, or when another team finds a weakness in the defense and starts exploiting it a lot? Usually after that happens, when the team comes back from halftime, there has been a correction made. Nate explains to the players in question why they’re getting beat, and then he makes adjustments to keep this from happening again.

Ernie doesn’t seem to get that part of it. He provides very few on-court instructions to the team other than yelling “MOVE!!!” over and over again.

Another troubling aspect of the Kent era…most of the players on his teams never improve year to year. At least not like normal college athletes. The same holes in their game continue to plague them their entire careers. The only players able to overcome that are guys who find themselves on NBA teams.

He was a good hire at the time because the Ducks had been relegated to a stepping stone for coaches as opposed to a destination. They needed fresh blood and someone with an enthusiasm for the university, which Kent had in spades. The teams played much better for a while and there was more energy overall. That energy is now gone. All that’s left is a lame duck coach who’s players don’t listen to him.

Oregon may never be a basketball powerhouse, but they shouldn’t expect to only make the NCAA tournament every other year.

Besides, Miller just got here. Kent’s been at UO long enough now.

Craig Robinson was a genius hire.

He’s not only a good in-game coach, but he’s a solid recruiter as well. If I could have UO switch coaches with OSU in that case, I’d do it in a second.

The Ducks are screwed in hoops as long as Ernie is allowed to remain in charge. They hired Mike Dunlap who is a great x’s and o’s coach as the head assistant. Hopefully he’ll take over the reins soon.

Then the Ducks can continue to have that postseason success the Beavs can’t seem to get. Unless you count that CBI championship that is. :)

Speaking of post-seasons, if you want to see an exciting local team that you can feel good about and will enjoy watching in March, there are still available tickets for the season opener in Corvallis. Get on at the ground floor, friend!

Thank you for the offer, but I'll pass.

As much as I hate Ernie, and as clear as it is that this team isn’t going to be good this year, I can’t abandon them now. Too many memories of great games in Mac Court are keeping me there.

And, as much as I love Mac Court, I wanna get some seats in that new arena. Being 6’6" and watching games in Mac Court does not go together. People must’ve been much, much shorter back when that place was built.

succesful in part because he can say , like, “yo my sis is the first freaking lady”..

I don’t mean to jump into the debate I am just genuinly curious if anyone thinks his “relations” help, or even harm, his recruiting.

I'd have to think it helps.

I can’t say for certain cause I’ve never met him. From what I’ve seen of his interviews he comes across as an intelligent and charming gentleman who clearly loves basketball. He may not mention his sister at all on recruiting trips.

My guess is that it doesn’t hurt though. Sure, you’ll get the occasional recruit who’s politics would push them away from anyone in connection with Obama, but more often than not a 17 year old kid is probably thinking it’d be cool if the President came to one of his games. :)

they both have their strengths… Robinson has the ear of the leader of the free world (who I hear is a basketball fan) Knight owns one of the most recognized sporting brands in the world… I think in recruiting Robinson wins because he can actually talk to the players, and they know if they go to OSU they will see him and hear from him… Knight is more the man behind the curtain at UO… pulling the levers and what not… recruits know he’s around, and he can make their wishes come true… but he’s the Wizard of Oz

Read this SI article.

It outlines Robinson’s old school recruiting approach and shows how he got Roberto Nelson out of LA, out from underneath the likes of UCLA, Florida, Ohio State and other big-time schools.

The article is interesting because it addresses recruiting techniques used today and uses Nelson’s recruitment as a case study of what star preps deal with.

As far as Robinson goes, the Obama connection doesn’t do anything but help his visibility to kids. It could hurt in some cases, but in general I think it helps more than it could ever hurt.

Coach Robinson is a successful smart man who has openly stated that when a kid comes to OSU, he gains access to his world of connections in both the basketball and business world. Whatever these kids want to do he can help them take that step to adulthood and I think that not only attracts good players but the right kind of players as well.

From the article…

During the summer before his senior year of high school, Nelson met Oregon State coach Craig Robinson, better known as President Barack Obama’s brother-in-law. Robinson called Nelson four times last fall and went to Santa Barbara to visit him in September. In November, Nelson spurned UCLA and Ohio State and signed a letter of intent to play for the Beavers.

How many pieces of recruiting mail did Robinson and Oregon State send Nelson?

Zero.

heck yes

i dont think it would make a recruit commit, but it definitely would “open doors” to recruits that previous OSU coaches would have no chance to talk to…

i tend to think that

robinson was a lucky hire. maybe the media lied to us all( which of course never happens) but it did appear that he was more of an option c or d hire that actually turned out to be better then expected.

They definitely tried to get a couple west coast guys in first.

I’d say Robinson was an option B but I give DeCarolis full credit for finding this guy. Luckily he’s panned out, but DeCarolis took so much crap for hiring him and really did take a chance on an unknown commodity in Robinson.

I myself thought it was a simple attention grab, almost solely because of the Obama connection, but he quickly put that notion to bed. He put the exact same team that went 0-18, minus the top scorer from that team, out on the floor and got markedly improved results by implementing a great system.

Great teacher, great coach and from what I can tell, a great guy too.

Jewish? Really?

I didn’t know any Jews at all.

Conservative? Compared to now, yeah. Compared to, say, the South? Not even close.

It was pretty heavily Democratic even back then. The state would go Republican on occasion, but it was for guys like Packwood, hardly a John Bircher. And Portland always went Dem.

There was a Jewish area of Portland over by PSU, but that was before they put in the freeways.

Jewish and Italian - the area was more down to the river

you can see the old Synagogue and several Catholic churches.

A more modern Jewish area was between Hillsdale and Multnomah. The JCC is there, a large synagogue, several smaller temples, Goldberg’s bakery was on Vermont, and several small businesses currently in the area cater to the Jewish population

The school I went to didn’t appreciate creativity. I don’t know if that is indicative of all Catholic schools, but I did not like it.

The other kids were oddly naive about life in general. I felt like anytime I said anything, they would all huddle around me asking what life was like on the outside. It was strange.

The reason I went to it (I am not Catholic) was it was supposed to be a better education. The lessons during that month were at least 2 years behind what I was getting at the public school.

They also said that 80% of students went on to higher education. I deduced this was not due to the level of the education, but had more to do with parents having the; a) money to pay for school, b) value of a higher education, not the actual subject matter or manner in which it was taught.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

anything against patriarchial tradition.

So unless you were being artistic by making stained glass images of the Virgin Mary , I can’t imagine them being supportive.

The rate of matriculation from private schools to colleges usually have much more to do with resources and value of education, you’re right. I’ve read this several places and while it’s no knock on the quality of education provided at most private schools, money and values is what it comes down to.

CC was a pretty good place to go as far as creativity. We had a lot of music programs, art (stainglass, printmaking, ceramics and regular painting/drawing/etc.) and writing teachers that were better than many of those I had in college (Dr. Weston and Dr. Rhody!). I can’t hate on that.

This looks interesting:

"1959: The Year Everything Changed," Fred Kaplan

Before smart missiles and iPhones, electronic devices choked on the hefty tubes required to connect disparate transistors. Then, in 1959, an engineer from Kansas named John St. Clair Kilby figured out how to put all the parts of a circuit on a small slab of impure silicone. Enter the microchip. Everything was compressed, and the technological world exploded — like so much else, after 1959.

I asked my wife this question.

I was curious as well. She said that women, as she sees it, are hobbyists when it comes to dressing up. They like looking nice and like trying out clothes and what not. So it’s not totally a “hey, dudes, check it out” thing. At least not for everyone.

What is provacative? I fancy it's differenct to everyone

In the US , it would be considered socially provacative and in some place I could arrested for walking around with my shirt off.

In an indiginous culture, somewhere, this is just common place. Since women have to feed children, and they all share boobies, it’s practical to leave breasts uncovered.

So, I can’t say the way women, or myself, dress now is provacative at all.

On a more in-depth level, it's true that heterosexual men seem to ...

represent a small minority of the fashion industry; in addition, they don’t appear to give much care — at least in detail — over what’s in regarding clothing style for females. Yeah, that’s definitely a stereotype of men not keeping up with fashion. Yet, I’m too lazy not to generalize in this case.

Different people do different things for a variety of reasons.

Some women dress sexy for men, some women dress sexy to show off for friends or acquaintances at a get-togethers, some women dress sexy just for themselves, et cetera.

Some men dress nice for women, some men dress nice to show off for friends or acquaintances at get-togethers, some men dress nice just for themselves, et cetera.

Likewise, some women dress down causally for whatever reasons; similarly, some men dress down casually for whatever individual reason.

Next time, you should try to avoid being so narrow-minded and, well, biased on certain issues.

No matter a person’s gender, each person does whatever they do for their own individual reasons. The key word there is “individual”—there’s no doubt about it.

I wonder less about why a woman (or man I guess) .....

….dresses provocatively…..and am more curious about their expectations regarding other peoples reactions. The proverbial “low cut blouse” garners attention (regardless of the reason it was chosen).

bottom line question for me ,I guess, is….should I checking out those legs?

Yeah, I do think it's disingenuous — or at least extraordinarily naïve ...

— whenever either a man or a woman is openly appalled and disgusted if someone is attracted to them due to their wearing of provocative attire.

That’s something that applies to both genders and, moreover, people of any sexual orientation.

Heck, straight men will sometimes lust over an attractive woman who’s dressed to the nines; likewise, straight women will sometimes become googly-eyed over a sharply dressed man. Again, the same thing applies to homosexual men and lesbians.

It’s human nature, folks. We are who we are and there’s nothing we can do about it.

Sure, in a simple way, clothes can represent the ability of one to care for a family, in a monetary way. Psychology reinforced with Darwinism/evolution, suggests that security is something we strive for and seek out. Clothes can be an expression of this sentiment. Other clothes can express many other things, which I think we strive for. I don’t think it’s wrong to be attracted to security.

This generally fits in to what I would take as an issue running through much of what’s been posted today—self expression. I like how you seek out generality and archetypes as a point of discussion. I do however, think you try to isolate yourself from your own expression—that is to say, you want to speak true from a vacume with no strings attached to yourself. The way you speak, however, is distinctly you, and part of it has to do with how you want to be seen/interpreted. I don’t quite see why you sometimes deny this, and deny your own expression.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 14, 2009 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your first paragraph

is onto something, and it furthers my original point that within evolution clothing plays a small part. It may be the current representation of what socially and psychologically humans strive for. To add to the mix biology, culture etc… which is what I was attempting to point out in the first place, clothing is not a deciding factor.

Your second paragraph, meh. I’ll just say arguing about such things, in an internet forum, is difficult and that you have the right to your own opinion. Also, yes I do generalize things to an enormous degree while posting here because it’s not really worth my time to elaborate. Or I could just admit to being lazy.

Whip It got killed at the box office, which was likely ’cause it lacked a strong prime demographic.

The film, however, did receive a lot of nice reviews according to Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, so kudos in that regard to Shauna Cross, Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page, et al.

That aside, I’m surprised more studio executives and marketing gurus didn’t recognize it had flop potential written all over it from a financial standpoint.

Stating the obvious

But diplomatic immunity doesn’t work like in the movies. One can not really obey traffic laws and park wherever one wants, but if you do something really bad (deal drugs, kill somebody, etc) you get kicked out of the country and prosecuted back home.

...or not prosecuted back home, like Ghadaffi's son....

Yeah, what I said is really only how it works for US diplomats abroad.

The US will kick someone out of the country, but we can’t make them prosecute. “Hey, you’d better prosecute that guy or we’ll tell you to prosecute him again!”

There was a russian diplomat who killed some people in a car crash in dc, after drinking and driving and the states couldn’t do anything other than kick him out. I never heard of anything happening to him.
