Larry Miller: Blazers Games Will Stream Online
On tonight's episode of Courtside with Mike Barrett, Mike Rice and Brian Wheeler, Blazers President Larry Miller said that all Blazers games that are set to broadcast on KGW will be streamed on Blazers.com, effective immediately.
Miller also stated that the Blazers are working through the details with Comcast Sports Net to stream games televised on that channel as well and that the Blazers are "committed to... by the end of the calendar year... streaming [all Comcast] games online."
This confirms Dwight Jaynes' first report from last week.
Awesome.
Miller also stated that "there will be a cost involved." He offered no specific details as to the pricing model.

I pay for comcast. Paying for online games doesn't seem unreasonable as long as the cost
is reasonable. Why should an online stream be free when cable and dish is not?
I'm happy to pay for it
should be cheaper than league pass broadband since it is only ONE TEAM. If that’s the case, and they can get everything on there (more games than LPB with their crazy black outs) I will not only pay for it, but be thankful for the opportunity to do so.
Not to be overly pessimistic,
but if the video streaming is going to be as controlled by the NBA as it sounds like it’ll be, and thus the quality of the stream ends up along the same lines as their audio streams, it may not be worth paying for. Various “third party” streaming options may yet have a purpose…
NBA league pass broadband is pretty good
And games are saved for a few days and whatnot. Their quality is usually much better than a stolen feed.

its not gonna be all games at first
its just gonna be the kgw local games then after that all the comcast

i'm cool paying
as long as they don’t black out all the games
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

That’s the deal. If you’re say a Blazers fan without cable and wanted to watch the games, you’d be able to using this system (except the TNT games).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
OK, Lance
But if it is only KGW games, how does that help people in the blackout area, most of whom can get KGW anyway?
Just curious, it isn’t my problem, since international LPBB doesn’t suffer from the blackout.
And if this is doable for regular season, why couldn’t it happen for preseason?
I can tell you how to make an Excel spreadsheet that proves Portland wins 62 games this year.
I don't know the answers like Lance might
But it’s a brand new development that likely has some things to figure out. And because of their deal with Comcast, they can’t just broadcast the games right away like they can with KGW. It doesn’t help most locals, but it does help anyone who doesn’t get KGW (Cabby, ATF, Tom,… does TwoDeep get KGW? Etc).
And, it lays the groundwork for January and beyond. I bet there will be some silly problems to figure out, and if it is up and running by the first KGW game (I didn’t see when that is), that’ll be pretty nice work.
We worried there’d be a hitch in this plan because of the Comcast deal, so waiting till the New Year isn’t that bad. Plus, even though me and you haven’t had the same problem as the locals in the black out zone, I bet knowing there is at least a light at the end of this Blazer-less tunnel makes blacked out locals happy.
As far as pre-season goes, I bet the production costs is what stopped them from showing them overall, and that wouldn’t go away with streaming games UNLESS it was merely the jumbotron feed (and of course there’d still be fees associated with that for the team).
Not to answer for Lance, of course… this just seems like a nice fix to the lame Comcast problem.
Mortimer
Pretty much what I thought, Morty
We’ll see if Casey answers anything different.
But it is really only a fix to the Comcast problem if Comcast plays ball one way or another, right? But at least it shows the team is trying to do something about it.

this is a big step in the right direction
From what I’ve gathered from people’s comments on everything from the comcast blackout to no pre-season broadcasts, the goal is to have a way to watch the boys in black and red, even if it costs a fee. Heck, getting comcast everywhere STILL means you just want the right to pay for it. This way the money goes to the team (even if they use the revenue to pay comcast for letting them stream it) and it becomes fully accessible. Pending details, this is a heck of a deal. Way to go, powerful fan lobby!

My understanding is they have to pay the NBA to stream the games.
Not Comcast.

Then why are they only saying they'll stream the KGW games until December?
They have to negotiate a deal with Comcast. The NBA will probably get their cut too…
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
Comcast likely has the local broadcast rights to those games is all
And a deal has to be made between the Blazers and Comcast, not a new deal with the NBA.
Because Miller was so sure it wouldn’t last past the New Year (he wouldn’t say that specifically if it wasn’t sure), I’m assuming some part of the deal between the Blazers and Comcast allows for the Blazers to show the games online without having to FOR SURE include Comcast.
Not that I know the details of course.

Why don't the Blazers

I have Cablevision, which we have out in New York/New Jersey, and we can’t get the NBA League Pass (I think). I was discussing this today with a classmate, and I did the math – typically I can see maybe 10 games a year between TV and in person on the east coast; being able to pay (even like at $200) is a deal for me, if we assume that I go to the bar for 30 games a year, that’s like $300 in drinks and food MINIMUM and i will only get sound like 20% of the time? I’m still saving money. This is out-and-out a good idea and will help me watch way more games than I could have.

Buh bye Comcast
I cancelled my Comcast a few days ago in anticipation of this. Good to hear it’s moving forward. On the MSP last week they mentioned the cost being $3.99 per game or $80 for the season but honestly I’m not sure if this was legit or purely speculation.
I would pay $80 for a season (82 games + playoff)
and I don’t buy anything
Disclaimer: everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazersedge.
It's very possible this would only be for the regular season
Since playoff games are all televised. NBA League Pass doesn’t offer playoff games, for example.
NBA League Pass also doesn’t show nationally televised games on TNT, ESPN, ABC and NBA TV. I don’t know if they’ve hinted about whether those will be streamed in this situation either.
There’s definitely some followup to come.
I'll still take it. I'm worried they will charge more.

Mike Barrett's Blog is less definitive about the Comcast games.
Mike Barrett uses the words “goal” and “is hopeful” to describe getting the Comcast games streamed by the new year.
But, as Miller said, his goal by the start of the new year is to have every Blazer game streamed live on the website.
As it currently stands, the KGW games will be included in the live streaming from the start, while the team works out the logistics with Comcast to get all of them streamed. Again, Miller is hopeful that by the January, another alternative way to see all Blazer games will be available.
Conversely, Miller seemed definitive that the Comcast games will be streamed by the start of the new year. At one point he starts to say it is a plan, then a goal, and then he verbally emphasizes the word “will” be streaming come the first of the year. However, he says the Blazers and Comcast are negotiating, which suggests they are still discussing compensation to Comcast, in which case it’s hard to understand how there can be a date certain deadline (the end of the calendar year) to begin broadcasts.
So perhaps Barrett’s Blog is meant to clean up Miller’s words and the date is still only a goal? Maybe Mike will clarify it in the comments section of his Blog tomorrow.
Here’s my transcription of what Miller said on Courtside (with the “ah’s” included):
Miller: … streaming the Comcast games as well. That won’t start at the beginning of the season, but, ah, we are committed to, ah, before the end of the calendar year we will be streaming, or by the end of the calendar year, we will be streaming our games live.
Barrett: … This negotiation for streaming would be between the Trail Blazers and Comcast, correct? So that’s something.
Miller: … the NBA had to approve it and then it is between us and Comcast. And we are the one’s that are driving, the ah, we are the driving force behind making this happen. And again, ah, our plan, our goal, and we will be streaming all of our games come the first of the year. We’ll be streaming the Comcast games as well as the KGW games …
….
Miller: When it comes to the Comcast games, we’re working with them to work through the details of how we’re going to broadcast those games on line.
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Oct 13, 2009 1:00 AM PDT reply actions
Very interesting
I wonder if they have some kind of club they can hold over Comcast’s head. Because he sounded pretty definitive, didn’t he? “We will be streaming all of our games come the first of the year.”
Perhaps there’s an out in the Comcast deal, and they will exercise it if need be, because they see this as the wave of the future.
I can tell you how to make an Excel spreadsheet that proves Portland wins 62 games this year.
There's no way the Blazers want out of the Comcast deal.
They are getting $12M-$13M a year for another 8 years, and no one came close to offering that amount except Comcast. Without looking it up again, I believe Fox Sports offered about $3M a year for a shorter term.
As much as the Blazers publicly express concern over the Comcast situation (and I’m sure they are disappointed about the coverage), they continue to increase their involvement with the CSN channel with programming like Courtside, the Fanfest broadcast, the Blazer Dancer tryout programs, the Rip City Revival programs, the Blazer Classic games, etc., etc. They even have their announcers participate in programs like Talkin Ball, and Nate and Rice did a running commentary for a broadcast of an old Sonics – Blazer game.
I would imagine (with some confidence) that the Comcast contract already specifies terms (or the basis for determining terms) under which the Blazers can stream games over the internet. i.e. what they have to pay Comcast to do that. Broadcast contracts have been very Internet savvy for years now, and this contract is only two years old. Comcast is very experienced, and certainly wouldn’t have overlooked this possibility in the original contract.
So I’d just speculate that Miller already knows that they can start streaming under some existing terms, or the basis for those terms, and they just need to produce and certify the data used in those terms. That fits his comments about working out the details and logistics. Hence, Miller would already have a very good idea how long that would take. Otherwise, he would never have publicly announced this today. Barrett may have chosen more cautious words himself without knowing anything of the process.

Makes sense
We’ll see. I’m assuming there is some provision somehow that gives him confidence to make those statements.
The fact that offers were so low two years ago may not mean much. Blazermania is on fire right now. The economy is bad, but this is still a hot property. Who knows what offers are out there and what options are in that contract.
But you’re probably right, they have some provision within the existing contract that they will exercise if need be. Perhaps they have a fall-back in the existing contract, but are trying to negotiate something better for both parties, or something. We might not ever really know.
I can tell you how to make an Excel spreadsheet that proves Portland wins 62 games this year.
Though if they charge $80 for a season...
it would only take 150,000 subscribers to make that $12 Million back. I think they could get that.
μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον πίστευε.
they have to pay the NBA for the right to stream the games… not sure if that affects how much profit they make from streaming as opposed to comcast.
