Junk Drawer 10/1. Athletes on UStream??

Well I figured I would pop my JD cherry this morning..here we go.  Last night around 11:15 PM Terrell Owens sent a tweet saying he was going live on UStream, I found myself watching him live for close to 20 minutes, and honestly feeling sorry for him (whats that say about me?).  It was 2 AM in Buffalo, doesn't he have a friend or family member that can entertain him? He's not the first either, Dwight Howard, Chad OchoCinco...don't even get me started on Starbury, that was one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a long while.  These guys are legitimate multi-million dollar athletes, why the need to stare at the camera in your MacBook Pro, shirtless, when 344 viewers oogle you.  Weird.

So my question to BEDGERS...whats your take on this?? I feel it doesnt get talked about enough, and thats maybe because its not a big deal, but it disturbs me.  Hopefully this is a decent first JD..if not lemme have it!

two + a couple more

1. There’s already a junk drawer for today. It was a sneaky junk

(J.oin U.ltimate. NBA. Krewl.)!!!! Reward (drawer spelled backwards)

You unintentionally caused a Junk Drawer war for today. The JDers will decide the faith.

2. No secret message. (secret message is usually in the URL)

3. No poll. Polls are required for virgins according to the JD Patrol

4. Need to add confusion on top of main topic of discussion…This is not really a requirement but from what I understand, it is a good way to control JD infestation from regular posters who post 10 ways to trade Outlaw/Bayless in 30 mins

btw, welcome to the JD Lifestyle…which is different from BEdge lifestyle. you will find the collection of people here consists of MIT grads, PhD profs, Stanford/Cornell homers, Spies, Execs, Ex Pro Athletes, Writers, Hobos, Students, Models, Engineers, Physicians, Lawyers, Feminist, etc…the best of the best

I think taking the concept and reversing it, really opens it up to all sorts of things

I would add that hiding said junk in food is also an important theme in the reverse glory hole

"Lighten up, Francis" - Sergeant Hulka

by Sexual Tyrannosaurus on Oct 1, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely an important part of it.

Although I suppose the d in a box digital short that sparked this conversation is also a reverse glory hole without a food theme.

But the food theme really makes it work because you need that buildup (esp in film depiction) where each reach of popcorn or bite of sandwich would lead to the “money shot”.

It might be too far for bounds of appropriateness, but I think that is definitely the imagery that is being gone for. Plus, once it is nourishment, it is like they need it.

Tim Duncan is a center in KD's eyes since he plays the opposing center. And Amar'e sucks.

I wanted to briefly get mad at KG over Dirk, but if you look at the total package (better shot blocker, rebounder, passer) and his title it seems okay despite his fairly poor outside shooting.

i think Dirk revolutionized the game

by broyposse on Oct 1, 2009 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Dirk has improved a lot driving to the rim. People underestimate how many fouls he draws, too. What I never understood is why the Mavs went away from him shooting many threes, he really is the #1 PF who should shoot threes. Maybe because they couldn’t control the offensive boards with Dampier then. Dirk is also an underrated defensive rebounder, but on defense he always played pretty far off his man giving him the long shot since while agile and a good pretty good dribbler on offense he isn’t laterally quick. I have seen him in person work on a crossover. Comical.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions

What I really want to see is Dirk playing next to a strong center

The best one he ever had might have been Kaman in the Olympics with Germany, and that’s just sad. On the national team he always had a white stiff, and in Dallas a stiff who could block shots but not do much on offense and, well, Dampier.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

So... you want us to trade for Dirk?

I, for one, want Dirk to retire a Mav and not chase rings.

He made that franchise, which used to be as bad as the Clippers, a great one.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, i meant more back to the basket…he definitely has the penetration to the backboard shot down and of course the drive adn pop from the free throw line.

he’s one of the purest shooters and i really don’t know why they don’t give him plays for the 3pt shot.

it would be a nightmare if you have a 7f post up, drive, shoot threes…and pull up for 10-15 footers…

that’s maybe why i think he could be better. it might be the environment and players he had to deal with

If we was a “real.baller” he would have used the switch to PF when they had Shaq to dedicate himself to becoming a defensive force. I blame him a lot for that experiment having had no chance of working. It was also a dumb experiment, but he was the one who could have adjusted his game to fit.

Would have been a nice addition in terms of helping Roy with scoring (still top 15-20 in that regard). Defensively it’s true that he doesn’t bring much to the table.

I bet we could have got him

But we’d have to put him at SF, making our perimeter defense MUCH worse (sub-Outlaw worse, since Outlaw at least tries), and he needs shots to be making any sort of impact.

He’s expensive and not that great; I bet the Bullets would love to trade him for savings or young pieces.

RE: Competing Junk Drawers
October 1st, 2009.

Cablinasian Technology Center has found that in past cases of competing "Junk Drawers," even a Junk Drawer with an earlier time of origin may be ignored due to a lack of a date (any date, really) in the title.

As haildablazer’s Junk Drawer does not contain the date in the title, CTC advises that it should be deleted in favor of colewagoner’s more conventional Fanpost.

Another barometer that is traditionally used to determine Junk Drawer victors is the "rec" total. This is also in colewagoner’s favor.

This one, in St. Moritz. It’s 4-star because it has no pool which disqualifies it from a higher ranking, and you have to go across a small square to another hotel that has one (which was free). But it had a very good kitchen and basically has the same view as the much more famous Badrutt’s Palace at maybe half the cost if you get a room overlooking the lake and the mountain range on the other side which is pretty much a requirement to make it worthwhile. Beautiful. And a nice spa with a balcony and relaxing area that also looks there. You can see the Badrutt’s from there easily: http://www.schweizerhofstmoritz.ch/livecam-schweizerhof-004-0106-de.htm

The equally more famous Kempinski has a bad spot down in the valley close to the lake. Some others are too close to the train station. By far not that nice.

1) he is a freakishly good athlete, not just a baseball pitcher (can easily do backflips)

In one well-traveled story from last year, the ace walked through the clubhouse and suddenly did a complete backflip, sticking a perfect landing. Centerfielder Aaron Rowand, one of the crustier Giants, took Lincecum to task immediately, telling him he was too valuable to endanger himself with such frivolity. The pitcher didn’t argue, but his father says, “They don’t understand what kind of athlete he is. He’s not going to hurt himself doing that.”

2) this section of an ESPN article about him

The delivery, all 2.5 funky, forceful seconds of it, is a continuous, liquid motion that showcases Lincecum’s athleticism 100 times a game. It’s the creation of his father, who emphasized three fundamentals: 1) "tilt"—the turn of Tim’s shoulders toward the third base dugout, forcing him to pick up the target out of the corner of his left eye; 2) "dangle"—the downward thrust of his right arm as he turns toward home plate; and 3) "reach"—the violent forward propulsion that creates a stride that exceeds his height and raises the real possibility that Lincecum might someday spike himself in the back of the head with his right foot.

Chris Lincecum is a Boeing parts-distribution employee who says his job could be done by “a monkey who can read.” He’s about the same size as Tim and, using the same unorthodox motion, was a talented pitcher himself, starring for nearby Green River Community College in the early 1970s. But his baseball career was diverted when he broke his back after a misstep sent him tumbling down a 20-foot embankment. He has definite opinions about pitching, and one of the first things college recruiters heard when they entered the Lincecum household was Chris saying, “Let’s get one thing straight: You’re not going to change him.” To this day, Chris sits in front of the TV and charts each of Tim’s starts—pitch, location, where the ball is put in play. “You know what it’s for?” Chris says. “Therapy. I used to sit in the stands and give him hand signals, but I can’t do that anymore. I have to do something.”

At a time when ballplayers, especially pitchers, obsess over training regimens and slavishly follow routines with a compulsive joylessness, Lincecum subscribes to no solemn throwing program. He doesn’t really stretch, never ices and swears he has never felt so much as the slightest twinge in his right arm. Nine teams passed on him in the 2006 draft, and six of them chose pitchers. Two of those guys, Colorado’s Greg Reynolds and Pittsburgh’s Brad Lincoln, have already undergone arm surgery. All of them were, in Lincecum’s term, “specimens.”

Giants scouts prepared Tidrow extensively before he watched Lincecum face Oregon State during his junior year at UW, and still the former big league reliever was completely unprepared for what he saw: “The arm speed, the hand speed, the length of his stride—I was blown away. There were a lot of things going on, but basically I liked all of them.”

Lincecum is an interloper in a world of relative sameness, where pitchers are either tall and sturdy or ignored. Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, whose undersized little brother, Greg, was a pretty good pitcher, says, “We’ve been seeing the first big wave of academy kids who’ve been taught by private coaches or in pay-to-play travel programs. They’re all big and strong and light up the radar guns. They’re talented, but they’ve been taught to do one thing: take instructions. You can tell them what to do and they do it, but they’re not going to think it out on their own.”

[side note: i was at that game where Timmy pitched at OSU. Holy crap.]

3) another one from SI:

Chris Lincecum never needed a primer on biomechanics to know that the scouts who doubted his son were wrong. As ASMI—with its proprietary measurements and motion-capture technology—pushes pitching further toward quantitative analysis, an aviation parts worker with a backyard mound, a camcorder and an intuitive understanding of how his son’s body moves through space traffics in simpler explanations. “I believe,” Chris says, “in something called dangle.”

Dangle is a term you surely will not find among ASMI’s 42 measurements. Dangle refers to the looseness of a pitcher’s arm action, the well-lubricated unhinging of the limbs and body, which helps explain why Chris regards Satchel Paige and Sandy Koufax, two hallowed flow pitchers, as the spiritual forefathers to Tim’s mechanics. “He’ll throw forever,” Chris once posted on a blog, referring to his son, “and maintain his velocities and the best breaking ball since Sandy Koufax and the best fastball since Gibson and Feller.”

Says Chris now, “A friend told me someday everybody will be throwing like Tim. I hope they do.”

“Can’t happen,” Righetti says, “because few pitchers are as athletic as Tim.”

The father’s job is done. Version 2.0 is a finished product. Tim is a treasure, a reliable, workhorse major league starter, but also a testament to that unmeasurable art and mystery that always remain within the discipline of pitching. “My dad would notice itty-bitty things with my mechanics and make it second nature for me,” Tim says. “Now I’m making adjustments quicker. It’s nice to have him there, but I don’t need him there to tell me what’s going on. I can make those adjustments pitch to pitch now as opposed to game to game.”

I guess I just have faith in his father’s philosophy of “dangle”. Plus the fact that Lincecum himself is a phenomenal athlete makes me believe that he will be very durable for a long time.

that's pretty convincing all right.

i don’t know much about biomechanics, but I do know (I think) that a fluid motion is important for preventing injuries. Of course, where does that leave Mark Prior?

I am 60% more convinced than I was that Lincecum will not get injured any time soon.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 1, 2009 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Did Prior have the same "dangle" or "fluid motion"?

I worry about the lack of stretching. He isn’t going to be 25 forever. At some point he will need to start doing something to take care of his body. The question is, will he do it early or wait too long.

by tingeyga on Oct 1, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

conditioning is a very good point.

Ken Griffey Jr was fairly infamous for not putting much effort into stretching and things. I can’t help but wonder if his hammy’s might have treated him a little better in those Cincy years had he put in the time in Seattle. If he was healthy all of the Cincy years, he’s probably 2nd or 3rd on the homer list right now.

two great teams. You could only love one of them though.

Now I get a lot more Mariner exposure than I do Dodger exposure. Man-Ram makes me smh. I do like it that most of the rest of the Dodgers are from their own farm system. It looks like the Mariners are trying to do that too, after they repair the Bill Bavasi-inflicted damage.

Great performance from Morrow last night. Hope springs eternal if Bedard ever produces like we know he can. They will have an amazing starting rotation next year if that happens. – Elgin

that's my guy!

I was actually living in LA and my mom was a season ticket holder from 79-83, but I was only old enough (just six when we moved) to remember liking the nachos and Steve Garvey (who then moved with me to San Diego to give the Padres one of their few successful years). But as theyears progressed, I remained a Dodger fan mostly. and I liked “Bulldog” and went to all of the Padre-Dodger games (we even got free tickets from our bud, then firstbase coach manny mota who hershiser tells a great story about in his autobiography) who brought me a signed Hershiser baseball when he was in the middle of his consecutive scoreless inning streak.

Those playoffs were the time of my life. It was only a few months following showtime repeat and the dodgers were so not supposed to win. I loved it when Hershiser went in as a relief pitcher during an extra innings, maybe game 5 or 6 of the Mets series. If I remember right, he held the bash bros to something like 2 of 17 combined hitting throughout the worlds series.

It has to be done right

It has to be like, someone says “I really like Batum and his wingspan, I think he’s the perfect fit for our starting lineup” and you respond “I like your FACE’s wingspan and your FACE is a perfect fit for our starting lineup”.

Nowadays, it isn’t funny anymore since it was overused. But back in the halcyon days of the early 90s, it was a mind blowing ahead-of-its-time joke.

Pundits often claimed LeBron’s goal in life was to become the first billionaire athlete, hence wanting to move to NY for more marketing opportunities. If Tiger is the first one to do it already, there is no need in being the second one to do it. He can just stay where he has the best chance to win a title not looking for more marketing dollars – if you buy the theory an entertainer has to be a in a specific city to do so in this day and age.

I thought that his stated goal was to be a billionaire

not neccessarily the first billionaire.

I can’t think that any credible pundit would think that LeBron would get to a billion before Tiger due to Tiger having a head start, not being capped by how much he can earn in his sport, and having a sport that leads to better business opportunities within the sport (designing golf courses versus merely selling shoes).

I don’t know though. I didn’t see Taken, since the commercials annoyed me. However, it was actually decently reviewed, and was a pretty big hit. With all that, it’s hard to blame him for doing the movie. I guess he saw something in the script that I certainly wouldn’t have.

It came out at a perfect time, where there was no competition for ticket buyers and the trailer was good. It was a relatively surprising hit, but it had good timing for when it came out.

I thought it was dumb, but not offensively dumb, and since it came out at a time when AWFUL movies get dumped on the populace, reviewers were kind.

yup

the whole point of the A-Team was that it was silly

always getting locked up then making some ridicules devise from the scraps lying around to get out. and saving the little company from getting driven out of business from the big company with evil intentions, then, of course, nobody dies in the fire fights.

I think they can do a story about Vietnam vets who get wrongly accused of a bad crime who now work as mercenaries on the run from the government in an actually good way.

I am okay with less silly. That’s okay. Silly is tough to do in a movie.

but “slick” is just wrong. The A-Team is dirty, hodge-podged, fly by the seat of their pants, on the lam, improvisational misfits. That is not slick, and trying to make it so would be changing it. It wouldn’t be the A-team any more.

If I am understanding

You mean the gratuitous car flip scene won’t be caused by shooting the car’s tire out. That is A-Team silly.

A recap for you

A high school team is down two. They get it to the 40 yard range or so. The long FG attempt is on line, but way short, landing around the 10 yard line.

For some inexplicable reason, the other team has players hanging there, who catch the FG attempt (thereby making it a live ball) and start holding over their head, celebrating at the other team. Then the guy spikes the ball down.

The other team picks up the ball and trots into the end zone to win the game.

Chad OchoCinco (then Johnson) dropped the ball on the 2 yard line in a bowl game while at Oregon State. Amazingly, nobody (not the refs, not the Notre Dame players, nobody) noticed it. It was solidly 2 yards in front of the end-zone— clear as day on replay. Funny stuff.

by jonestr on Oct 1, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

there are *two* Christmas specials

There are definetely some cringe inducing moments. The biggest difference, to me, is that Michael Scott is a much more sympathetic figure than David Brent (Gervais’ character on the UK version). While Michael is a jerk, he’s really more just a buffoon while David Brent, in addition to being a buffoon, is a pretty terrible human being.

Another key difference is that “Tim Canterbury,” the character that inspired Jim Halpert, is much easier to identify with— Tim is actually the dork that Jim is supposed to be (but nobody buys because he is a good looking guy who is always getting the girl— Tim would have had no chance with the girl selling purses in that once episode).

The UK version is definetely a must see— its much more brilliant than the US version, in my opinion, though I could understand how some people wouldn’t like the cringe inducing moments.

by jksnake99 on Oct 1, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Who are all those people,
that he’s locked away down there?
Are they crazy?
Are they sainted?
Are they zeroes,

And it’s never been explained,
since it first it was created.

Best story I can think of off the top of my head goes back to ’66 or ’65. She was going to lots of his studio seshs. And she recalls a tale where she made a comment about not getting what the bass guitar player was doing and how it was affecting the whole sound. So Frank stops everything, walks over and grabs her, puts her in a chair right in front of bass amp and proceeds while she learns you never interrupt Frank during a session.

Just a question regarding Entourage: Minus Jeremy Piven, the guys are all pretty bad actors, right? Conolly is short and has a squeaky voice, and Grenier is just bad - I mean, he was in a Britney Spears movie in real life.

Don’t know if that was supposed to be part of the joke. I like the series, but I prefer the dubbed version where I don’t have to hear the original voices. Makes it seem cooler, and they found better voices for them.

by Cablinasian on Oct 1, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

That really depends on how Martell does in preseason

Of every player outside of Oden, Martell has the best chance to surprise. I think people are underestimating him right now. The new flavor of the moment is Batum.

by Timmay! on Oct 1, 2009 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Nic was a better offensive and defensive player in his rookie season than Martell was in his third season. Add to that the fact that he is coming off a year of rust, and it’s easy to see why a lot of people have very tempered expectations.

He would have to be significantly better than he was two years ago after having been out of play for a year. Doable, but difficult.

Nicolas’ rookie year was excellent, as shown by Pelton’s statistical analysis.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

he turned the ball over less per possession, was a slightly more efficient scorer, a slightly better passer, a better offensive rebounder, and consequently had a little higher PER. Martell is obviously the better shooter, but Nico holds a slight edge in quite a few offensive categories.

The fact we relied on Martell to score and he was always defended

Skews the numbers a bit.

Martell wasn’t a great offensive weapon, but we relied on him to score. Batum’s points were just gravy and his shot were almost always open.

I do prefer Batum, but his offense wasn’t very good.

My sense is that Martell was left open more than people remember (people seem to think teams paid a lot more attention to him than I remember), and I’d love to have data to confirm or deny that.

by jksnake99 on Oct 1, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ve argued this both ways… Martell was more of a focal point in the offense, which does skew the stats. Nico was still close or better in nearly every offensive category; that’s not a good sign if Martell is supposed to be the offensively gifted one of the two.

it’ll be awful hard to stay close to Batum’s 37% on the perimeter with Roy, Aldridge, and Oden on the interior. His defense can’t really be adjusted for and his offense was predicated off of others getting him the ball in good situations.

He dissappeared and had a lot of low-point games against lesser opponents in Eurobasket as well though

I think he’ll be much improved and his passing and dribbling will help a lot, but I dunno if he’ll score a lot more than he did.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Batum was a little better offensively and a lot better defensively.

Essentially every per-minute advanced metric I know of prefers Batum’s rookie season to Martell’s 3rd… PER, WP48, KP2’s Win %, raw plus minus, adjusted plus minus, statistical plus minus, etc.

by jksnake99 on Oct 1, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you gotta factor in their usage rates more

It’s not to discredit what Batum did, but to point out he couldn’t be relied upon to score and wasn’t expected to. Martell’s offensive game was much more reliable.

That’s not why he should start, but Batum couldn’t average over 10ppg last year if he had Martell’s role, I don’t think.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I think if you get Batum more shots

It doesn’t equal the same as Martell did.

The percentages aren’t far off, which is much to Batum’s credit as a defensive-focused rookie, but the scenarios just weren’t the same… nor the quality of the teammates.

Again, it’s not to argue Martell > Batum, but I think Martell is much more likely to score more than Batum.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think we need points, however

Batum is a more natural passer, ball handler, defender, off the ball mover, etc.

Martell is getting heavily underestimated at this point, almost to the point of ignoring him

Martell could be a huge surprise. Other than Oden, I’m watching him very closely.

Martell has gone through some huge changes from the last time we saw him play. It may take some time for him to get back into basketball shape, but he may completely catch everyone off guard this season.

I’m not much for predictions or projections. But I’m definitely curious how Martell handles this season.

by Timmay! on Oct 1, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

agreed. He's a wild card. I'm not ruling out that he could be better than we've ever seen him.

For me, though, that’s unlikely… and if he’s not, then I would pretty much glue him to the pine while Batum plays a lot and Roy also plays some 3 alongside Rudy.

by jksnake99 on Oct 1, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

For me, though, that’s unlikely…

I think it’s likelier than you do. But for reasons that nobody has mentioned, and aren’t worth covering yet. If Martell breaks out this season, I’ll have one monster fanpost to discuss these details. (it moves way outside of projection numbers… his previous stats can’t really be used to predict Martell’s upcoming season, IMO)

If he doesn’t break out, I’ll skip the fanpost, and will talk about it here in the JD instead, to explain why Martell disappointed more than expected.

by Timmay! on Oct 1, 2009 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Martell might be my favorite Blazer. I’ve liked him for years and I would be ecstatic to see him play well.

While I want him to succeed, it’s a gamble at this point. If he does, then the Blazers are better and we’re all happy. I’m just not going to get my hopes up when we’ve seen little evidence of goodness from Martell.

by jksnake99 on Oct 1, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Nah, I think it's okay to take it literally

He sacrifices minutes and being a starter for the good of his team, being a prominent member overall shouldn’t count against him.

I think simply coming off the bench more than you start is enough.

Maybe up it to over 42 games off the bench if one wants, but I think it’s good as it is.

He sacrifices minutes and being a starter for the good of his team, being a prominent member overall shouldn’t count against him.

If he’s in the top 5 for minutes played, there’s an argument he’s not sacrificing minutes.

by Timmay! on Oct 1, 2009 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps

In Manu’s specific case, he’s only played 30mpg for a season once, and
in a general way being willing to come off the bench for strategic reasons
while knowing you’re a top 3 player on a team is admirable.

It helps the team, he should be rewarded for it, and not disqualified because he’s so good.

It’s not like Pop has him as a 6th man so he gets the award. It’s to help the team.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

There's no 'gaming the award', so to speak

If lots of great players coming off the bench to get the award.

Its all for strategy and to help the team, which shouldn’t be penalized.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Starting a game has definite value though—especially when we talk about most consecutive games started (read Farve). Balki will never be in that discussion because Pop needs him to sit on the bench and watch perfect strangers. I say we give the poor boy the award.

I'd still accept it

if the 5th and 6th man were both around 30mpg people, that whoever comes off the bench is still a valid 6moy.

The only reason 6MoY candidates should be allowed to have played full time minutes is if they are the backup at multiple positions. If 6MoY is just about coming off the bench for whatever reason, it feels like a meaningless award.

I don’t have any thoughts on it exactly, I just hope that he gets to stay this season and experience more in the playoffs.
I would think that would help his chances at getting a bigger contract next year, because so many teams are going to lose out on the LeBron sweepstakes and have money to burn.

I have a rule about not worrying about things I cannot control so I don’t expect the Blazer’s bigs to get hurt. If I did that, I end up like AK in that one post that pissed off Corvid where he said he hopes they get hurt to prove his point. I think everyone gets hurt, I just hope for not long.

I just think Outlaw’s been through too much crap with this team to trade him for some guy that’s just an insurance policy. I’d like to see him ride this season out with his teammates.

by tominhawaii on Oct 1, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I would love to keep Outlaw

I just want him to also be able to show his stuff to earn a nice deal, because this next deal will likely be his biggest ever..

If we can keep him and he’d be happy with his role and what he makes, I’d love that.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t plan on anyone getting hurt so Outlaw in the second unit as the 4 will make him look pretty good and hopefully will get him a nice contract.

Folks lamenting about not having a real 4th back up bigman, is on par to me with complaining about who’s the 15th man. It’s just not worth bickering over.

by tominhawaii on Oct 1, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely

I think he will get a nice deal next year on the market, with teams like New Jersey and Minnesota interested in his services. The Blazers would also make him an offer, but can’t spend much more than on Martell for him I guess. It’s fairly unrealistic to think KP would form a package with Travis and picks and Bayless mortgaging future talent to get some insurance policy player like Foster or Collison who would be nice to have but only necessary if there was a long-term injury.

Not for Bayless

He can be worth much more still.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

No, I want to get a draft pick or two in return from such a deal.
“1. The team has a logjam at small forward, with Travis Outlaw as the odd man out in this equation. There’s also a quandry with Jerryd Bayless that’ll soon reach a boiling point, for there’s no way that he’ll be satisfied riding the pine as a fitfth guard.

2. The team needs a role player who can backup LaMarcus Aldridge at power forward and fill in at center if/when Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla get into foul trouble, are knicked up throughout the season, or suffer from a serious injury.

In the NBA, some guys are best served putting up empty stats on a crap team (e.g., Outlaw & Bayless) and other guys are best served as role players on a playoff powerhouse (e.g., Jeff Foster & Nick Collison).

After looking back at all of my previous trade proposals centered around this issue — with most of which being similar to one another — the following is my favorite of the bunch.

FROM NEW JERSEY
2010 First-Round Draft Pick (Via The Dallas Mavericks)
Conditional Draft Pick(s) (Via The Golden State Warriors: Top-14 Protected In 2011, Top-11 Protected In 2012, & Top-10 Protected In 2013; If First-Round Pick Isn’t Conveyed By 2013 It Becomes A 2013 Second-Round Draft Pick & 2015 Second-Round Draft Pick)

FROM OKLAHOMA CITY
Nick Collison ($6,250,000)

FROM PORTLAND
Travis Outlaw ($3,600,000)
Jerryd Bayless ($2,143,080)

TO NEW JERSEY

Jerryd Bayless ($2,143,080)

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=kr6gkq

Since the New Jersey Nets have a sizeable trade exception from the Vince Carter trade, the team can absorb Travis Outlaw’s contract. Oh, and with regards to Jerryd Bayless also being included in this deal, all I’ve got to say to that is good riddance to bad rubbish.

Realistically, though, my fear is that Kevin Pritchard will continue to stick his fingers in his ears, turn the other way, and ignore the quagmire that’s brewing on hand.

With Outlaw and Bayless likely to have dwindled playing time and none at all, respectively, they’ll both moan and groan incessently early on in the season.

Bayless’ angst doesn’t worry due to his frustration probably being bottled up or dealt with off the court through phone calls between his agent and the front office, but I can foresee Outlaw screwing with on-court chemistry by disrupting the offensive flow and chucking up stupid shots that’d make Jason McElwain stop to think twice."

by AK1984 on Oct 1, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know if Colison is exactly better

I don’t think like to linearly categorize players. I think Outlaw in Collison are in the same cloud.

I also think Outlaw will probably sign the biggest contract he can get, but I also have a little voice in my head that tells me that Outlaw already has more money than he will ever spend, and I could see him signing for less money to stay with Roy and in a situation where he is comfortable.

by tominhawaii on Oct 1, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Collison, to me, is a 10/10 player with good defense

He isn’t as dynamic a pure scorer as Outlaw, but he’s really damn solid and underrated still.

I don’t see OKC moving Collison for Outlaw alone, because what he does no one else does on that team, and he has a fair deal. Only if he forces them somehow, by continuing to rip on the city and franchise, or by being a gloomy gus.

Foster is a non-starter for me because, for one, we’ve never heard they were looking to move him, and two, he has been a career Pacer and is their Joel. I don’t see us moving our Joel just because we got some young guys who aren’t as good as him.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

But yeah, it can be silly to argue these hypotheticals

I don’t know if either are available, though I do think Collison is at least a better FIT as a backup big, than Trout is.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I heard the Collison stuff

I think that was media generated. I don’t think it will go beyond what went on over the summer.

I see what you’re saying about Collison too. I think Outlaw is on the same tier as Collison, but I can also see how Collson is more valuable to his team. It all depends on how much you value a B+ over a B or a B-.

I think the Blazers could trade Outlaw straight up for Ronny Turiaf and it would make a lot of people happy, and the Blazers would win no more or lose more game, than they would with Outlaw. Both guys just shouldn’t be playing that pivotal of a role on the team.

If we had Webster last year we win the title handily

His dominant defense and ability to COMPLETELY TAKE OVER GAMES with his offense were sorely missed last year.

That’s what I gather from some comments, anyways.

And I like Marty!

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I seem to remember thinking he was a better defender than roy and better on the defensive boards. I don’t see him being better than that french guy we have though.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 1, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

He was a MUCH better defender his 3rd season than previous years

And is a good rebounder for the most part.

He’s getting underrated by some and overrated by others… I think he could be pretty good, but we gotta see where he is at first. A year gone is a year gone, after all.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

he’s going to be a rotation player in the NBA. The problem is that some people think he’s an absolute scrub while others think he is destined to score 24 points in every quarter.

I think he has a chance to be a good starter

His 2nd season was a lost season because he was clearly depressed, and his 3rd season was how I expected his 2nd season to go.

Then, of course, last season happened.

But he’s got the body, the tools, and great work ethic. I think he could be pretty good, but he’ll never have a big role as a Blazer. He seems fine with that, but I still think he has a lot of potential.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I shouldn’t have said “hate” but I did use quotes. You are obviously not high on him though.

by tominhawaii on Oct 1, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

That is a fair assessment. I think he is a role player at the moment, with the potential since he is still young to become a solid starter in the NBA. Nic has significantly more potential to me, and should not see less minutes to accommodate Martell but an increase in his role. Martell has to earn his minutes back (and that is if his foot is really fine from here on out), just like Greg has to replace Joel and Miller has to replace Blake (not as “must” replace, but has to earn it).

And yes, historically I’m also prejudiced against Martell for passing up Deron and Paul for him. Like Marvin Williams, it seems highly unlikely he’ll ever live up to that. But that is not his fault, and is not why I would be against starting him once he shows he is the best player of the 3 or 4 forwards who could do it.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Cool

I try not to think too much about Martell’s game. I like him as a person and think that in reality, he’s probably somewhere in between his stats from the last year he played and the media hype. I like him because he’s a Blazers, but I don’t plan on evaluating his contribution until I watch him play. I just take his side in arguments because I don’t like Spencersbutte.

by tominhawaii on Oct 1, 2009 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I also never wrote things like he needs to be traded, or KP and Patterson where raving lunatics for trading down. It’s what they did, Martell did what he could, and is what he is coming off a lost year that probably frustrated him more than most fans imagine – but still the age of a college junior or senior so there is a lot of years left to grow.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t think you’ve ever mentioned trading him. The best way I can describe it, is that it felt to me that you look at Webster as somewhat of a nuisance on the roster. Not as far as the team chemistry goes, just that he’s annoying to you and you don’t quite know how to get rid of him.

by tominhawaii on Oct 1, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem I foresee is rather similar to what Cab has written about players getting frustrated with lack of playing time and not developing as fast or far as they could. Depth is nice, but in the end only 1 player can be on a position at any time. So splitting up potential among 3 or 4 if we count Dante/Roy/Rudy is not as efficient as having one clear-cut “star” respectively just a clear starter. If that is Martell, great. If that is Nic, great. If that is Travis, great. If that is Rudy and Roy both starting, great. But time-sharing has never really worked in my experience. So in theory aside from how we would trade for them I would rather have say 1 Danny Granger (likely too much of a star) or 1 Gerald Wallace or 1 Caron Butler with 1 clear and ideally younger backup to him. Nothing against any player, just a question of logistics.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm just going to ramble

I’m not an advocate of time sharing, I’m more of an advocate of the best players earning the most playing time. I know it is naive, but with the stage that this team is at, I still think there are a lot of unknowns. Players need to earn their playing time, because there is only one real star on the team.

If I was a fan of another team, I would think Jerryd Bayless was a bust. I think Gerald Wallace=Elijah Price.

I can poop in one hand or wish in the other, but at some point I have to play the card I am dealt.

To me, it is kind of like having a kid. Even thought you don’t really like the way he or she turned out; you still have to love it and support it no matter how much it pains you. On their 17th birthday, you can’t be thinking about how you wish he or she was more like the neighbor’s kids. Once they get out of the house, all bets are off.

Blazers # 1 draft pick next year

http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/10152804/Hoopster-born-without-a-left-hand-gets-his-chance?GT1=39002

The counsels of impatience and hatred can always be supported by the crudest and cheapest symbols. For the counsels of moderation, the reasons are often intricate, rather than emotional, and difficult to explain. And so the chauvinists of all times and places go their appointed way: plucking the easy fruits, reaping the little triumphs of the day at the expense of someone else tomorrow, deluging in noise and filth anyone who gets in their way, dancing their reckless dance on the prospects for human progress, drawing the shadow of a great doubt over the validity of democratic institutions. And until peoples learn to spot the fanning of mass emotions and the sowing of bitterness, suspicion, and intolerance as crimes in themselves - as perhaps the greatest disservice that can be done to the cause of popular government - this sort of thing will continue to occur.

One caller said the 1971-72 Lakers were the best team ever. And one caller said the 96? Bulls (72 wins) were the best ever. Every other caller agreed with the assessment.

The sad fact (what?) ya mama smokes crack (what?)
She got a burning yearning and there’s no turning back
Her knuckles drag down to the ground when she walk

Did they give a reason?

Or is it simply because Nate’s using the same people together who started last year?

I think that poor people tend to vote Republican

I also think poor people tend to be fatter than people who are more well off. That seems like a contradiction at first, but cheap food tends to be less healthful and it’s very likely that poor means lower education which in turn could mean less knowledge of a balanced diet.

Poor is probably the underlying issue

by Magnum on Oct 1, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions

"poor rural people tend to vote republican"

Poor rural people, maybe, but not poor people in general. Obama won 73% of the vote from folks making under 15k per year. In general, making more money is correlated with voting republican, as seen in these exit polls.

It is true that poverty is the best predictor of obesity because the cheapest calories are from things like twinkies.

Are you kidding me?!?!?! We’re gonna let him play again?!?!?! He offended my delicate sensibilites! I’m pretty sure he was the first college kid ever to throw a punch, and he should be punished as such! Ruin his career!

What a joke. The punishment was WAY too harsh in the first place. I’d love to see him brought back, because I’m a reasonable person and he didn’t deserve the sentence he got. I’d also love to see him back because I’m a Ducks fan and he is an insanely talented back who will make our team better.

On a separate note, how stupid do you have to be to instigate after the game WITH YOUR HAT OFF, then take your eyes off the guy? LGB marred the reputation of Oregon? I’d rather support the school of a guy with a nice right cross than the school of a damn fool with a questionable jaw.

Okay, I pulled it because Dallas Clark is awesome. You will come back and beg me to offer this trade again ;)

Dallas Clark, TE, Colts: Another “dentist moment” for me but, while I know he’s super obvious, I’m putting him here for this reason. He’s gonna finish the season as the No. 1 tight end. The Colts are using him in the backfield, on reverses, in the slot, in the coaching booth, selling tickets, running the scoreboard, I’m sure he’ll start throwing passes soon, I mean he is everywhere. They are lining him up next to Reggie Wayne on the same side of the field and letting Wayne draw double coverage, leaving Clark to be guarded one-on-one by a linebacker. In short, they are doing a million different things to get him the ball. Trade for him with confidence and blow plenty of money on him in Gridiron Challenge or other salary-cap games. – The Talented Mr. Roto (Matthew Berry)

The beautiful flip side! And this time it's our boy Ray Ray making a very unsurprising cameo. This is for the 2011-2012 season.

Note that Danny Granger, the best shooter in the NBA two slots closer to the center of the court, is actually the worst from this spot.

Shooting percentages as they apply to certain areas of the court. Note who one of the best shooters in the NBA from the wing is. Check out the guy dominating under the hoop as well. Pretty impressive for a 6'9'' guy.
