great poll and Ice T with Ice Cubes joke. But even though the entire title of the JD is a secret message of sorts, I would have enjoyed a real secret message.

Not that I’m going all bow4meow on you or anything. There can be only one, afterall.

Maybe I’ll dedicate the next JD I make on the topic of secret messages.

I wonder what Conley thinks

Any chance of good assist numbers went out the window. Each of those guys gets a pass and…. holds…. the… ball… and… then… shoots… eventually… or… dribbles… a… lot… and… then… shoots…

Even if they weren’t SELFISH, per se, just their offensive styles equal no assists.

But, they’re all selfish.

I can’t wait to schadenfreude it up for the Grizz like I do for the Thunderettes.

And they’ll surprise people off the court, too. In some way or other, they will certainly come up with something surprising.

How do you define "expected"?

I think they’ll be, no coincidentally, sorta like last year’s Clippers. CAN beat ya with their firepower, but usually just won’t.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Although

Last year’s Clippers has a helluva lot more talent than Memphis.

the 5 pictured above don’t mesh, and then the bench… whoa boy.

And because of the movies, perhaps Gasol and their #2 languish away on the bench not getting developed… which is a sin for young bigs on a horrible team.

I read he just trimmed his back and chest hair

So the jersey just fits closer to his skin now, making him appear skinny.

I also heard he lost weight but Norskie is right, not to Paul’s level.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he'll never be as good as his brother

But Marc is more of a real center, and is quite good already in his own right. Not being Pau is no insult.

I know you’ve offered the theory that the college Blazer scouts wanted to have one of their guys selected after our Euro scouts already had a few guys taken… is that something you thought up (the theory makes sense), or is it something you heard from your inside sources?

Usually I’d say “well good players are passed up every draft in the 2nd round, hard to say blah blah blah” but we got a great presence in Europe and we obviously have scouted the Spaniards a few times. Maybe once or twice. It is strange we didn’t draft him.

Not drafting another Euro for internal political reasons makes sense to me.

by Mortimer on Oct 1, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

No that is my theory. But they had drafted Greg, Rudy and Petteri in the first round. Then unfortunately went with McBob and Derrick Byars who they traded immediately away before Gasol was taken by the Lakers. Then the last pick was Taurean Green, so I doubt they were waiting for another big man dropping to them. The Lakers also underrated Gasol, they picked Sun Yue a few spots ahead of him.

To me it was clear after watching Marc and Pau at the world championships in Japan that Marc would be an NBA player like his brother. And at that time he was much heavier and less skilled, but you could see that he was mixing it up under the basket and would be a good defender. He e.g. kept Baby Shaq Shortsanitis in check, who gave the US guys big big trouble. A pro scout must have watched Gasol since his high school days in Memphis, latest after entering the ACB and known he would be good.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

They might have been also afraid neither Rudy nor Marc would ever show up in the NBA, though both talked about that as their dream before so it was pretty unlikely even if it would have taken a few years.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

That's the only thing I can figure

Maybe people doing their homework on Marc figured he didn’t want to come over and be a role player in the USA when he can be a star in the ACB.

I had seen him before that draft and remembered him as a bruiser who wasn’t close to as good as his brother, but a big body who can handle other bigs. I didn’t realize, at the time, how young he was.

Just one of those mysteries I guess.

RE: Competing Junk Drawers
October 1st, 2009.

Cablinasian Technology Center has found that in past cases of competing “Junk Drawers,” even a Junk Drawer with an earlier time of origin may be ignored due to a lack of a date (any date, really) in the title.

As this Junk Drawer does not contain the date in the title, CTC advises that this Junk Drawer should be deleted in favor of colewagoner’s more conventional Fanpost.

Another barometer that is traditionally used to determine Junk Drawer victors is the “rec” total. This is also in colewagoner’s favor.
