Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Here We Go

As mentioned in the sidebar and in Ben's update below, multiple sources are reporting that the Memphis Grizzlies have just signed Darius Miles to a 10-day contract.

[Ben: One necessary update from my post below... it seems that Day 1 of the 10-day contract will actually be January 10th, as the official signing announcement linked above is dated January 10, while the original report by Ronald Tillery saying that he was "to be signed" is dated January 9.  Thanks to Brian Hendrickson for pointing this out.  Therefore, Miles's 10 days would include 3 games (Cavs on 1/13, Jazz on 1/16 and Pistons 1/19).  He must play in 2 of those 3 to have his salary added back to the Blazers books.]

Perhaps the Blazers' letter backfired, causing the Grizz to want to prove that they really, really want this guy?  Or maybe they just like screwing with the Blazers.  Or maybe they just like Miles.

In any case, welcome to luxury tax, litigation, and discussion hell.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah-blah-blah... Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah-blah-blah... Chacarron Macarron... Chacarron Macarron...

Assuming he's even a Grizz when we play them

10 day contract… 2 games needed out of 3.

Do they have the balls to hit the minimum and then send Miles packing?

Nope

If he gets those two games during this contract, they sign him to another 10 day-er just to strengthen their defense case, I would bet.

If he doesn’t get those two games, they may not re-sign him, and let someone else do it. This is a “Cover Your Backside” move, possibly.

Think about this. If someone else picks him up for two games, the Griz are co-defendants, right?

But if the Griz sign him for ten days and only play him in one of these games, then if someone else signs him and plays him the 10th game, they can say, “Well, we could have played him the tenth game and didn’t. So obviously, WE weren’t trying to game the system.”

Seems pretty likely he won’t hit only 10 with the Griz. They will likely play him one more or at least 3 more.

Wait a minute: are you not DAVE, OVERLORD OF BLAZERSEDGE???

Why don’t you just ban all mention of Darius Miles? Most of us wouldn’t mind a bit. Certainly I wouldn’t object.

Pardon my ignorance of all things financial, but in the end isn’t this mainly about Paul Allen’s pocketbook? Can’t he take a hit on Miles’ contract—if that should happen—and still go get a top free agent as long as he’s willing to take the luxury tax hit? Isn’t he a multi-billionaire who’s passionate about the Blazers? So won’t the team probably end up looking pretty much the same regardless of how this Miles thing ultimately pans out?

I really AM blissfully ignorant of the cap, luxury tax, etc., so pardon me if this is dumb. But even if I’m wrong and Allen’s deep pockets don’t make this whole controversy moot for the rank & file Blazer fan: I STILL don’t care that much. This present team, given a few tweaks and a couple more years to mature, should soon be a contender even if no big money free agent comes aboard in ‘09-’10. How many super-talented players does one team NEED?

Good God, man! There’s Brandon Roy—the second coming of Dwayne Wade—leading the way with his scoring and all-round brilliance. There’s LaMarcus Aldridge—the second coming of Rasheed Wallace (minus the craziness)—scoring, rebounding, blocking shots, and running like a gazelle. Then there’s Greg Oden—likely the second coming of Nate “The Great” Thurmond—already beginning to dominate the paint. Then you’ve got terrific young role players in Rudy, Trout, Batum, Bayless, & Martell. Add a “Maxsap,” shake & stir, and you’ve got a contender for the next decade and beyond. What fun to watch them all develop and come together.

So go ahead, Lord Dave: banish all this Darius Miles talk. You KNOW you want to. Who’s going to stop you? B.E. is your playpen; we’re just visiting it.

By the way...

To pick up a “Maxsap” (i.e, a Millsap / Maxiell type), you needn’t pay a zillion bucks to a free agent. Name a Maxsap, any Maxsap, and I’ll tell you when he was drafted: in the second round. With KP’s smarts, I’m sure he can come up with a talented banger off the bench. They don’t grow on trees, but you needn’t break the bank—or Paul Allen’s wallet—to land one.

KP should hire me.
Evolution of Rudy was in his normal line of progress looking at years before. Marc´s one is really surprising. If he continue like this could be even better than his brother. He´s fisically stronger than Pau and, as Rudy and Ricky, a very intelligent player.

And...
About picks and trades and Spaniards: You won´t find in ACB, Spanish top competition, the number and quality of young players you find in the NCAA, but a lot of matured and experienced players, the kind of people that can be really difficult to compete for a young player, and that tells something about three consistent young guys: Marc Gasol (22 years old, 7’1", picked by LA, brother of Pau, and I think he is in the way to be a new Sabonis), Rudy Fernandez (you know him well) and Ricky Rubio(17 years old , 21/10/1990, PG and now seventh player with better stats in ACB). These guys play better this year than the last, higher and higher getting older. They are not the kind of player who goes up some weeks and some down. But the best will be Ricky by far. He gets the responsibility of his team when needed as he´d be the most veteran (29 points today in a European match against a Turkish team, Rudy out injured), playing with people that could be his father. I have never seen someone 17 age year old at that level in Europe. I know you have heard about him: his actual performance isn´t something new. If Portland have a little opportunity to pick him must do it. And probably could bring him to the NBA in 2011 even 2010 ready to play. How many teams can promise to Ricky a great young team, even with one or two friends there, a team that may pick in first round a PG with two or three years to come?.
Please forgive my poor english (I TRY TO IMPROVE READING YOUR POSTS), thanks for all I´m learning from you and GREAT GO BLAZERS.

I like how you think

I completely agree on Rubio. Unfortunately, I can see no way Portland will be in position to land him, short of gutting the team in the process. Marc has really taken his game up, I remember reading some stuff on him when he was living/playing HS ball in Memphis while Pau was there and it sounded like he wasn’t going to be a force

Why we want the more capspace, and why being rich ain't enough

Now keep in mind, I am not an expert on these matters. Storyteller would be much better equipped to answer it, both in actual knowledge of the current events and the inner workings of the CBA. But, I’ll take a stab at it and perhaps it’ll work since I ain’t a cap expert.

BASICALLY, cap space enables us to get someone for money alone. If we are not below the salary cap, we are only allowed to use the Mid-Level Exception (MLE) to add a free agent, plus a few other exceptions— but those are for only a few million bucks total, and the MLE is for about 5 to 7 million a year (about Joel Przybilla money). You can add a good role player that way, maybe a star willing to play for cheap to win a championship, but not much else.

If you have cap space (say, 15 million) you can add a player of a higher caliber (or a few role players, not just one) and not have to trade anything or match salaries or anything like that. If you are over the salary cap, you can only sign players you already have to contracts that go over the cap— not free agents from other teams (being able to sign a player even though you are over the cap is called having that player’s “Bird Rights”)

But it isn’t only about signing a impact free agent— the cap space gives you flexibility to make a big trade as well. No matter how much money Paul Allen has, we still have to match salaries in a trade UNLESS you have room under the cap— whatever room you have under the cap, you can use to help match salaries. So if you got 15 million in space, you can, say, trade a 2nd round draft pick and get someone who makes up to 15 million bucks in return— and that’s the whole trade. If we’re only 7 million under the cap, we have to send out 8 million in salaries to make it match (a Blake and an Outlaw, in other words).

We’ll still be under the cap if we really WANT to be under the cap if Miles goes back on our cap, we just lose a little flexibility and might have to pay more of a price to get the guy we want, and instead of adding him for “free” (just cap space and a roster spot) we might have to drop players we like or trade them in return. We would have to NOT pick up the team options on a few of our guys contracts… such as Blake or Outlaw.

Either way, we can get the person we really want, it just becomes a question of whether the guy is worth losing a Steve Blake over. That will depend on who we target, of course.

Paul Allen IS the richest owner, but that comes more in handy when keeping your own players. Let’s say LMA, Bayless, Batum, Rudy, all become allstar caliber players (not saying they WILL, I am just giving an example). They’d each want over 10 million bucks each, which would take up about 2/3rds of our salary cap, and we haven’t even got to Roy and Oden (or Joel, or Blake, or Martell, or Trout, etc). Most owners simply couldn’t afford that (and maybe it’d be too much for Paul Allen even), and some of those players would have to be moved just to keep the payroll down (like what with PHX did with Joe Johnson and draft picks).

Paul Allen is one of the few owners who can afford to keep the talent together (assuming the talent WANTS to stay together).

KP has hinted that they have been targetting someone for a while. The Miles situation, no matter the outcome, won’t prevent us from getting him— the “price” will just be higher, and we’ll have to sacrifice some guys we like.

It’s all a lot EASIER if Miles’ money doesn’t go on the cap, but back when we made the Z-Bo deal to get some potential cap space in ‘09, we had assumed Miles would be on our cap now and if that’s the case they have already planned for it (medical retirement was something some wondered about but you can’t plan for). Being under the cap would be a rarity for us, and this next offseason would be the last time we are under it for many a moon, because soon Roy and LMA will need to be re-signed. It’s our cap window.

It is not the end of the world, but PA’s riches won’t solve everything.

Well put.

Like someone said on the radio yesterday (maybe it was Canzano?) Allen is willing to pay luxury tax if this team is a team capable of going deep in the playoffs. But hes not going to just throw away millions on a team that gets knocked out of the first round. So I would think if we can secure a player to take us to the next level so to speak, Paul is willing to pay the price. Paul loves the blazers probably more than anything else he has money invested in, but he is a smart business man. If he sees a window opening that can possibly bring this team to the finals, I don’t think there is a limit on what he will spend to do it, but he isn’t going to spend money, just to spend money.

by tmundal on Jan 10, 2009 10:36 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The problem

with the all-$15-million-for-good-player trade is that you have to find someone on the other end to give you that player. That’s true to a lesser extent with role players as well, but I can see scenarios where somebody’s role player just doesn’t fit and you get him for space. Even then, though, GM’s are going to want talent most of the time. Anyway, basically if you’re going to get someone for just cap space and their salary is in the tens of millions it means that they’re washed up, overpaid, or an attitude problem.

by Dave on Jan 10, 2009 11:01 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd say

Cap space and FREE AGENCY is very overrated, and I’ve always said that so it ain’t a rationalization in case we don’t get the Miles space ;-) <——————————WINK

You always overpay, for overlong, and it rarely works out how ya want it. Baron in LA and Brand in Philly and Maggette in the Bay are recent examples.

BUT, the flexibility it gives you for trades, is what we’d likely be after. Let’s say someone wanted Outlaw, and our 1st round pick, and wanted to give us Gerald Wallace to save money, with the cap space we can absorb the difference between Outlaw’s and Wallace’s salary. THAT is where cap space is super nice.

Dave is right, you ain’t gonna get a great 15 million dollar player for free that you’d actually want. In any trade, no matter what we’d like be trading someone to get who we want, in addition to cap space.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jan 10, 2009 6:49 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, not at all!

Mortimer has it exactly right. Cap space won’t get us a superstar or even great free agent off of the open market because there aren’t any coming available this summer that we’d want. Cap space alone won’t get us a star in trade either or even a really good role player.

HOWEVER cap space is critically important because it lets us facilitate all kinds of trades that we couldn’t otherwise make. Let’s pretend, for instance, that we wanted Stephon Marbury and his $20 million contract. (I know…gross. Bear with me.) We literally could not do that deal next summer without cap space to make up the difference. Our players are so young and so inexpensive that we’d have to trade six of our top ten guys just to make the salaries balance. You’re not going to trade six Blazers for anyone right now. However with the cap space those salaries become approachable. Even for mid-level salaries we’d have to package a couple players at least, maybe more, to make any deal work. Cap space allows us to trade ONE young guy (or ONE young guy and a throw-in) for a good player instead of having to trade more. Cap space also allows us to trade players that are relatively equal but don’t quite fit together in the salary matching rules. We can pretty much ignore the salary matching rules altogether. Without that flexibility it’s going to be much harder for the Blazers to make trades without giving up a ton.

My only argument about the Miles thing is, he really only cuts our space from $18 million to $9 million provided we don’t mess with cap holds. And for the purposes of making a trade work $9 million is about as good as $18 million. As Morty and I said, nobody is going to take $18 million in cap space and nothing else for a really good player. They’re going to want talent in return and $9 million should be enough to bridge the gap. We wouldn’t use all $18 million doing that anyway.

Of COURSE we’d rather have the full $18 million. Who wouldn’t? But it’s not a strict necessity if the right deal comes along. It was a luxury. Like the rest of America, the Blazers will simply have to balance the budget a little more carefully than they had planned to.

—Dave

by Dave on Jan 10, 2009 11:02 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can't imagine anyone we'd WANT who would be that spendy

So yeah, not having that much cap space won’t likely limit us. I agree with your analysis from the other day where the Miles thing won’t really hurt us if we are targetting someone specifically, since we still have PLENTY of flexibility to get that person one way or another.

I’ve always thought whoever we get as a final piece will either be a star role player type, and most likely in a trade. I can’t think of anyone we really want that is worth buckoo cap space.

Of course, the more the merrier, because you never know.

I don’t think we’ll likely get anyone better than Roy, and I don’t want someone who THINKS they are better than Roy. I want more experience and better defense, both which will come in time I think (well, at least the experience thing. No cap space can give us that, and it’s what we need most).

You think this'll make us stop talking about it? :)

We still have the two games Darius plays in.

Then the games after that where he plays, where we debate whether he’s being played for merit, or to make sure it doesn’t look bad on memphis. (This could even turn into a season-long contract)

Then we will talk about the appeal.

Then we will talk about the results of the appeal.

And all along the way, we’ll talk about the raw deal we’re getting from the press (whether we are or not)

Good luck getting away from this topic!

The Grizz didn’t come in and find a way to steal LMA or Greg Oden or B-Roy. We still have a nasty Big 3 and lots of other goodies.

Grandma Pritchard made a yummylicious apple pie and the neighbor kid snuck in and stole one piece, not the whole thing.

Ok... I've got a few guys

to sign to 10-day contracts when we face the Grizz next:

Xavier McDaniels

Charles Oakley or ’Zo

Ok, ok… I kid, but seriously… If they play him, they better PLAY him. I think the Blazers have a good case against the Grizz if it is apparently they’re only using Miles just enough to fleece the Blazers out of cap space and money. Right now in this situation, I feel more like Jeff Van Gundy must have felt holding on to ’Zo’s leg… It is probably going to get worse before it gets better. At least we have a good team now…

This whole situation makes me mad, because it doesn’t really seem fair – particularly to us or to Darius – don’t feel too much for the Grizz unless they actually end up extensively using Darius (which I highly doubt they will). Also, I have my suspicions that Miles health is still a big concern, and that the doctors were probably right to try to keep him from playing.

I think I've figured out Chris Wallace's plan (is this the same Chris Wallace from Fox New btw?? that guy is a hard worker!)

Here it goes:

1. Sign Darius Miles to the 10 day contracts
2. Play him to screw over the Blazers, get the 266k, lose more games in order to get more lottery ping pong balls, and eliminate a competitor from the free agent market
3. Play him A LOT so the Blazers’ possible lawsuit would have no merit

and

4. By playing him a lot hope that his knee CAN’T hold up to the stress of playing a lot of NBA minutes, which will hopefully lead to another injury then promptly cut Darius

CW is a diabolical genius!

You tell someone not to do this, someone was going to do it. Miller should have used the reverse and said Darius would be a huge asset to the Grizz and wished him all the best in his surely long, all-star caliber NBA career.

I still don't understand why no one wants to use someone like Randolph

to injure a star player like Mayo if Memphis decides to screw us. There wouldn’t be any way for the league to prove it, so why not try?

by BR7formvp on Jan 9, 2009 11:51 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lol hopefully that was a joke

hopefully? please? say it was? hopefully you were jus’ being silly, so if so, ignore this:

THIS AIN’T THE MAFIA! These are real human beings. You don’t jus’ go ’round bumping people off!

haha I mean….Even IF the Grizzlies planned this all out to completely and utterly screw us out of money and capspace, in no way does it warrant hurting a human being—OJ Mayo is a person. He, and every other member of the Grizzlies organization (and Darius Miles and his agent for that matter), deserve to be treated as such.

I know you mean someone dispensible to the teams short term plans….BUT

It starts to look like to others reading our stuff that Randolph might be into playing that way

HE IS NOT…

I really like this post

because it really crystalizes in my mind what this is about. The Griz are trying to screw with the Blazers…but they will probably get away with it because it can’t be proven. We could do what BR7 suggested …but won’t because it is underhanded and wrong…even though it too can’t be proven

Larry Miller is an idiot

Why hate on Chris Wallace or Miles? Neither have done anything wrong.

After reading that Miller interview I can only conclude the man is an idiot.

Basically he read that article from Yahoo or ESPN about how teams might just sign Miles just to kill our caproom, so he sent that e-mail. He had no problem with a team signing Miles if he thought they were acting in good faith and not just doing it to hurt us. The problem with that is how the hell would you ever prove that? It’s impossible. Can you prove in a court of law that Team A signed Miles just to hurt Portland with no interest in keeping Miles? No.

His mistake was thinking this distinction (between signing Miles with malicious intent as opposed to signing him to help their team) would be easily understood. It wasn’t. The media and especially blogs always skips that kind of detail and goes for the juciest headline which is “Blazers threaten to sue anybody who tries to sign Miles” which is wrong but they don’t care.

This has just embarassed this organization, gives this team an unwanted spotlight for trolls and also possibly hinders any deal making in the future because the other GM’s are pissed at us.

Doubt it

First, I’d guess that the Blazers front office has more information than Yahoo. It might not be a lot more, but more. Second, I don’t think it is impossible to “prove in a court of law” intent – esp. considering that litigation often is done outside of a court of law, or if it reaches the civil suit level the court has a lower standard for restitution. Third, GMs will deal with us because we have assets that they want. They may not want to, but when push comes to shove – business is business. Finally, I don’t think this is a big story except in the short term. Since Miles isn’t on the team now, this has no affect on the chemistry of the team we have.

Obviously there is more to come but

So Memphis can’t sign Miles to a third 10 day contract.
After this one is up they would have to sign him for the rest of the season.
After the Grizzlies play him for 2 games and all the cap/tax stuff is done why would another team sign him? Just to help the Grizzlies lawsuit?
If the Grizzlies sign Miles for the rest of the year and play him regularly what if his knee blows up just like the doctor’s predicted?
Like it or not the Blazers have tempted a team to make some seriously bold moves.

What amazes me, is how why an employer

would put an employee to work who was diagnosed with a career ending injury without getting a medical clearance.

In most work places if you miss a week pf work because you slipped on the job an dhurt your knee, you can’t come back to work until you are medically cleared because of the liabilities involved..

So here is my summary of the situation.

After he plays in two more games, this thing will look somewhat similar to the Steve Francis buyout. We will have gotten rid of a guy we didn’t want influencing our good character young players. He still counts toward the salary cap, but Portland and the PTB are much better off without him around.

That's not fair!!!

If he burns down anything more than just the arena , I will be really suprised

Paul Allen doesn't play softball.

Much like Chuck Norris… He sees payback not on equal terms…but more like…you slap him in the face, he drops a nuclear bomb on your hometown.

It would’ve happened anyway.

That’s not the point. Miller sent out a threatening letter/email to 29 other teams besides Memphis. If you don’t think that plays a part in who and/or how KP does business with them from here on out, you need to learn business 101.

As far as weather it played a pivotal role in whether or not Memphis brass signing him… i suppose we’ll never know will we?

Not quite sure what you are saying..

Are you saying teams won’t deal with KP because of it, or KP won’t deal with Memphis?

Either way you are right, but I think ALOT of the teams would’ve done something similar if they were in the same position. I personally think Memphis made a move that will be looked down upon by alot of people around the league. The thinking being that if they did it to Portland, they would do it to anyone. Alot of guys won’t want to deal with Memphis because of it.

I know in my business there are companies that I will not deal with based on how they treat other companies who are in fact my competition but I have good relationships with.

tmundal

as always, i respect what you have to say in/on this forum and enjoy what you contribute. That said, I’m merely saying that dealing with and/or swooning individuals is a fickle enterprise. Often times (as you know) pulling the trigger on a deal with an indiviual can come down the smallest matter.

Perceptual threat of said email/letter could be that small variable that goes against KP’s dealings.

I agree...

The email has made KP’s job harder. Of course…had it worked it would’ve made it that much easier. Looks like they decided to gamble, and lost.
