An open letter to the eastern conference
So sad, that you have decided to manipulate the system like this. Although it has not been reported I wonder if Mr. Ainge knew that the preseason would count against the ten games needed to enforce the payment of Mr. Miles contract. I wonder how many gm's new this. If that's the case then I would like to call "Dirty tricks" on you. For shame. Were you so afraid of what this recently maligned, and morally bereft team was turning into? Was the Celtic fanbase still upset about losing the 07 draft, and just had to get one back on us? Is Grizzlies management this desperate? It seems the answer to all of these questions is a resounding yes. The eastern conference has it in for the Blazers. And I for one am proud. Proud I say! Proud that a team that had the best odds of winning the 07 draft, and through pure chance ended up with number 4, which enabled them to put together a team that went on to win the big prize, was so threatened by our up and coming Blazers that they felt compelled to resort to underhanded, shady dealings behind the scenes. They were so terrified of the maelstrom building on the horizon, that they decided on the low road. You have given me new inspiration to support my team! You have revived my feelings of loathing for all others! And you have placed your heads directly in the line of fire! For shame, for shame. By choosing this route you have decidedly lessened the potential for leniancy, and pity when the Blazers come knocking. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, but the fate of your lowly orginizations will soon become clear, and when it does you will then understand the meaning of the words "Juggernaut", "Unstoppable" and "Incomprehensible". You had better get your kicks while you can, dear sirs, because sooner than you know, you will be reduced to drooling, mouth-breathing, lobotomy-craving, waking-nightmare having shells of your former selves! I have reached a fever pitch, but it is nothing compared with the cacophony of screams inside of your own skulls, that you have decided to pre-destine yourselves with! YOU ARE FOOLS!!!!!!!

I know that the grizzlies are not in the eastern conference
I remember when they played in vancouver, bc, and I know that when they moved to memphis there was not enough room for an expansion team in the east, and it would have caused an imbalance in the amount of teams in each conference. I should have titled this post differently, obviously stating that I knew memphis is in the west. When I was writing this I directed it at the eastern conference, because of the statement made by an eastern conference exec. saying that the blazers are going to get screwed. It was meant as a stream of consciousness rant, in an over the top, humorous way to alleviate my feelings that there was going to be a game played behind the scenes and not on the court. So I left out a sentence clarifying that memphis is in the west. You caught me.

Suggesting that Ainge knew that the preseason counted towards the 10 games
is giving him way too much credit here. Besides if Ainge was the only other GM who knew that the preseason counted not named KP, why would Darius have received a DNP-Coaches Decision during one of the preseason games?
by tingeyga on Jan 8, 2009 8:14 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
possibly to cover himself? It is hard to believe that given the situation with miles KP was the only one who knew...
by Tyler Durrden on Jan 8, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps, but I think that Ainge's role in this whole thing is
simply dumb luck. The better question though is will Miles sign a 10-day contract to just to play in the 2 games and then be unemployed again?

suggesting any gm didn't know about this is not giving them enough credit
every organization has lawyers analyzing every potential contract, in my opinion this was not as big a secret as we all believe, it’s more likely the 800 pound gorilla in the room. I suspect nobody wanted to talk about it because it would make them look like their intentions were only to get one over on the blazers. The celtics had a full roster when they picked up darius, and all of the talk coming from their camp was that he looked pretty good. He looked like he had some life left in him. Obviously this was not the case, otherwise they would have kept him on for a minimum contract. Please, if he is not good enough to get another 10 day contract for a perennially losing team like memphis, then why should anyone think that any teams motives could be pure in this deal.

he is now just a pawn in a larger scheme.

An Open Letter to Blazers Fans...
K#be Bryant lands awkwardly after a dunk and finds out that he needs season ending knee surgery. Doctors say he’ll never be the same player as before the injury but he’ll still be able to hoist up jumpers and make it from one end of the court to the other.
This puts the Lakers in a lose-lose situation. They’ve got [an estimated] $21 million tied up for the next 3 years in K#be but now he’s little more than a one-tool player. They decide to cut their losses and persue a medical retirement. Without a doubt, K#be is no longer fit to contribute at the caliber of which he signed his original contract. An outside doctor confirms this, and grants the team financial leniency.
You’re Kevin Pritchard and you’re in charge of one of the best teams in basketball at this point in time. You’ve got young talent locked up, you’ve got a balanced roster with an average age in the mid-20’s, but you realize you play in the ultra-competitive Western Conference and an extra $21 million in LA might as well be a blank check for the best available player [i.e. Lebron James]. K#be, being a competitor, makes a valiant effort to return to his old NBA form, although his physical limitations prevent him from ever truly showing the aspects of his game that made him famous, he is able to provide veteran leadership as a 14th or 15th man…
What would you do?
1.) Waive Shavlik, sign K#be, and mail Jerry Buss/Phil Jackson a “Better Luck Next Year” card [essentially sticking them with a $21 million handicap]…
OR
2.) Stay on the sidelines and worry about your own team, essentially acknowledging that anyone in their situation would want/need the cap relief.
If you’re me, and it’s the L@kers, I’d be incredibly upset if Kevin Pritchard didn’t make every effort in his power to stick it to ‘em. Granted, this is the National Basketball Association and not the National Salary Cap and Litigation Association, but at the same time, the team who offered the player the contract [whether it was D-Miles and the $9 mil or K#be and the $21 mil] should be held accountable for the decision to sign that player. We don’t shed tears for the Wizards and their unfortunate decision to sign Arenas to a massive contract after a couple knee surgeries… We don’t cry for the Knicks, who should be able to Medically Retire Stephon Marbury thanks to his on-going bout with criminal insanity…
My point is that the Miles’ situation, worse case scenario, is a speed bump, not a dead-end. It sets a dangerous precendent if teams are allowed to medically retire a player who can still compete at the NBA level, waive that player, and then threaten a lawsuit when another team tries to sign that guy.
I’m hoping as much as the next guy that Miles doesn’t play in two more games, but I also realize that with as much young talent as we have, it’s very likely that the Blazers won’t begin competing for championships until after Miles’ contract would’ve naturally come off the books. By freeing up his $9 million, this process is likely to speed up, but that’s not to say it wouldn’t have naturally happened in the first place…

comparing darius miles to kobe bryant is absurd
One player is a perennial all-star with rings, the other is a problematic cancer with no redeeming qualities like leadership, veteran knowledge, team play or a love for the game. The problem I have is not whether or not darius plays again, it’s whether or not any team is actually thinking of picking him up to give him another chance, or if they are just doing it to dig into the blazers pocket.
