Gameday Open Thread: Pistons vs. Blazers--Second Half

Well, our zone is leakier than a 10-cent umbrella and we're taking shots like we belong in a Wild West show but we're not out of it.  What will happen in the second half?  Continue the discussion here.

Let’s put it inside.
Gimme some LMA.
Gimme some Joel “Hands” Przybilla
Gimme some G. Oden!
Gimme some slashing cutters.

I normally don’t quote scripture, but just as it says in The Good Book: “Let there be points in the paint.”

"Now with a non-provocative footer!"

by timbo on Jan 7, 2009 8:53 PM PST up reply actions

Rex is also

7 years younger. He is not a PG, or a SG or a combo guard… he is a 20 year old who does not have a spot yet.

by cic on Jan 7, 2009 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

yeah... I don't konw

the way I see it is that if Vinny Johnson can be a shooting guard, then Bayless could also.

Bayless has plenty of time to find his NBA identity. Very few NBA teams run pure PG sets anymore. So many of todays players are versatile enough to handle the rock that unless your CP3, you just don’t need to dominate the ball like PG’s of the past did.

Either way, the kid is 20, and has yet to see any serious run yet. Garbage time and 2 minute stints here and there are just not a reliable opportunity to asses a young players ability.

as good as Bayless has looked...

… I don’t like him handling the ball out top to initiate the offense. He’s been great in transition, but dreadful in the halfcourt.

Travis is WAY too much fun to give to any other team...

He totally fits in with this team.. he belongs here…
I want to see what he becomes on the Blazers… not somewhere eise.
I’m not lookin’ for an arguement. Just expressing my opinion. And yes, part of it is personal, as in I like who he is off the court. As well as the rest of the team. We got chemistry. That’s big.

by Berkeley on Jan 7, 2009 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

you da man, Berkeley

You da man for standing up for Travis like that.

I wish all the Travis doubters would just shut up. Yeah the dude has some stuff to work on. But what he needs more than anything is confidence. Once he has confidence he always finds his groove and then the dude is pure money.

Without Travis our team would be woeful.

It was in late Jan or Feb.

It was the Jack fast-break behind-the-back turnover game (when all he needed to do was hold onto the ball and wait).

LMA hit a fadeaway in the lane as the buzzer sounded.

It was the one where we went into a dive afterward. That game was for first place.

by Timmay! on Jan 7, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

Jack did that in OT and Martell was fouled on a 3 pt attmp in ot and missed 2 of 3

It was the only game I’ve ever sat court side, like literally w/ my feet on the court directly adjacent from the blazer bench, i remember that game well and AI hit the shot right in my face. I was devastated, literally.

I honestly remember it because

it was the night I knew Jarrett Jack wouldn’t be back the following season.

I growled for like a week after that game… and longer when I saw the tailspin that followed it.

by trailblazersfan on Jan 7, 2009 9:40 PM PST reply actions

PHEW!!!

Nice game. Can we please stop pretending LMA is an allstar? Travis is more clutch and more consistent when it counts than LMA is. I figured if Travis or Rudy took the final shot, we had a good chance to win. If they pounded it in to LMA, it was done.

Regardless, good win.

But being honest is all I do well.....

by SuperDave on Jan 7, 2009 9:42 PM PST reply actions

Let's put in Hedo Turgulo instead of Dwight Howard then

KG was an all-star many times and yet he rarely hit game-winning shots. Of course, he ain’t the only one.

by Eventine on Jan 7, 2009 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

"when it counts" ??

LMA is just about consistent every night. His off nights are usually 11 and 7 or something. What good is Travis “in the clutch” (which he has not really been this season by the way) if its not a close game because he has been a non factor the entire game?

ps Did you forget about LMA against Boston already?

Honestly, he really didn’t have a great game. But after having a 30-minute meeting with Nate (which presumably went something like “you gotta get better or you’re not staying here”), it was nice that he got to be the hero.

I doubt he said that

For one, threats are not a good motivational tool. For two, KP has said there won’t be any trades. This was nothing special, it was just Travis Outlaw being Travis Outlaw. Outlaw’s game is like the tides. It’s another reason why I don’t understand why people are so happy to trade him. He’s a cheap young back-up that has a tendency to disappear and a tendency to do what he did tonight.

No

What I want out of any power forward (as spoken by a non basketball coach):

7-11 shooting and double digit rebounds. A presence down low, and the ability to out muscle the opponent and send a message with a periodic forearm.

What I don’t want:

A black hole that soaks up 10 seconds awkwardly dribbling into his position, or shoots 18 foot jump shots while regularly shooting 7-22. I’d also prefer he not have Daddy issues, nor a penchant for being moody.

That said, LMA is a fine power forward for how he is utilized within the offense. Is he an all star? Hell no. Is he clutch? Not yet. Could he be someday? Hell yes.

Give him time to develop and he’ll be fine. The vitamin water commercials on the radio claiming we should go stuff the ballot box to put him in an all star uniform is silly.

But being honest is all I do well.....

SOMEBODY who isn't banned there yet, go over and start a fanpost on Celtics Blog about how their losing streak is bad karma caused by them banning 10 BEdgers for no reason...

………………………….. The streak of horribleness won’t end until 10 losses are registered after the banning — or until the ban is rescinded!

by Norsktroll on Jan 7, 2009 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

Here ya go...

BAD KARMA? CURSE OF THE BAMBINO?

Am I the only one to notice that this horrible losing streak of our beloved Celtics began with the banning of 10 posters coming here from Blazers Edge? I think it’s true… Ten of them got the boot for nothing and I think we’ve only won one game sense. I know it sounds funny, but I think there’s some sort of curse at work here, or karma or something…

And here’s the bad part. Today during my weekly visit to my neighborhood palm reader, I asked her what was happening with the Celtics, why they were caught up in this inexplicable funk. What she told me brought shivers down my spine. I turned pale and nearly threw up. She said: " I feel a boiling fury from the west — those who have been wronged must be appeased." THAT’S ALL SHE SAID AND SHE DOESN’T EVEN LIKE BASKETBALL!

Is that weird or what?

And then I asked her: “What will change things for the Celts, my beloved boys in green.”

And she said: “I see the number ten. Ten the losses shall be, 1 each for the 10 who have been wronged — ’ere the evil be undone.”

So, please….. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY……. Unban the Blazers Edge 10 or this season is GOING DOWN THE TOILET FAST!!!

Ok I'll vent - sort of

I was so ANGRY after watching the first half and the first couple of minutes of the second half I thought I was going to explode. That was some of the worst defense I have ever seen. I was really ready to call it a season (and I mean season) for the Blazers. Oh sure I knew they would/will fight for the playoffs and maybe even make it. But I also saw so many flaws and stupid plays and horrible effort that I was beside myself. I am sure the few beers I had before the game didn’t help either.

But then, I started seeing some effort. A lot of effort. Some smart plays and some lucky plays (which I believe are caused by effort). I started feeling better. Then it continued. Prince was making some shots but they were late in the shot clock and with hands in his face. I came off the ledge. Then we took the lead. Then we won.

Morale of the story: Heck I don’t know. Don’t drink heavily before a game? A game is 48 minutes? Never give up on Bayless or Trout? Whatever it is, I believe. At least until we play Golden State. : )

Thank goodness

It seems that every team hit’s there J’s and free throws against us. But not FT’s tonight and not the last to J’s.

And I really wasn’t relaxed at all. Typically I am, but I think the 6-8 beers I had threw all my ambitions out the window. I need some aspirin……

What I love about Trout

The man has no fear. It’s not low bbiq, although sometimes he makes me crazy with certain plays. I think he’s convinced he can make any play/shot, and he plays accordingly. The bottom line is right now we have 2 (maybe 3 if Rex gets some chances down the road) guys who want the ball in their hands with the game on the line – B Roy and Travis.

I remember people gloating this morning it would never happen. Now it seems very real again. Although what Storyteller posted is still true: KP can try to appeal the ruling based on the intention of the CBA.

But he believed so based on what cap guru Larry Coons wrote. Portland would definitely push for a fast procedure to get a decision before July.

The article will explain most of the details.

He’s a former Blazer who was medically retired (against his will!) last year. He’s attempting to come back this year. He really doesn’t have game, but may go back on the salary cap.

Read back through the last week of Blazers Edge front page posts and fan posts. There’s a couple historical perspectives posted.

by Timmay! on Jan 7, 2009 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

"Someone is going to scoop him up and play him those two games now," one Eastern Conference executive said when told the news on Wednesday night. "Portland is screwed." One West GM thinks the Denver Nuggets, who moved under the luxury-tax threshold on Wednesday, will be motivated to sign Miles.
