No, please no
Here’s the text (Insider linked to a NY Post article). This can’t happen…
OKLAHOMA CITY – One team that may go after Eddy Curry, now that the Knick center appears ready to resume playing, is the Blazers.
Portland president Kevin Pritchard, who’s been after David Lee for years, quietly scouted a Knick preseason game.
“They’ll do anything for a big man,” a league source said.

Obviously, Curry is trade bait because his contract runs past 2010. His removal could allow the Knicks to sign two players to maximum contracts that summer.
Meanwhile, an absurd trade rumor hit the Knick locker room Sunday. It said the Knicks, Clippers and Blazers were involved in a three-team, 12-player trade that would be consummated next week. A newspaper referred to it as a “report,” but it actually was a posted comment on a Knick blog by a person claiming to have ties with the Clippers.
The deal had the Knicks getting Marcus Camby, Channing Frye, rookie DeAndre Jordan, Jerryd Bayless and Jason Hart. The Knicks would give up Quentin Richardson, Lee, Anthony Roberson and Malik Rose.
Knick president Donnie Walsh said yesterday, “It is a fabrication. I have not had any discussions on this at all.”
The Clippers have shopped Camby.

The NY media is pulling stories out of their behind to make their own players look like desired assets
Curry is has talent, but doesn’t work on it and it thus overweight, plus carries a $30 million price tag with a contract that goes through 2010/11 to boot, ruining any team’s chance to participate in the Lebron & Co. sweepstakes. Only very few teams desperately looking for a literally big man would be willing to take that on (maybe Charlotte). The Blazers are not one of those, and would only take him on in a deal that lands them some other major major major asset.

shhhhhh
"A story in the New York Post claimed that Portland would be interested in Eddy Curry.
Riiiiiiiiight.
Let’s see. Portland has two behemoth centers already (Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla), and there’s zero chance either of them would shift to power forward. At best, Curry would be Oden’s backup, where he’d be making $10 million a year for three more seasons, with an uninsurable deal. He’d be on a team that wins entirely by spacing the floor and shooting jumpers, but he’s only effective if he’s being force-fed in the post. He’s also out of shape and would kill their cap space in 2010.
Basically, I can’t imagine a single player who the Blazers could possibly have less interest in. Pick anyone, and I mean literally anyone — Jerome James, Tim Thomas, Stephon Marbury, you name it — and it makes more sense for the Blazers than Curry."

I will not be shocked
if Portland were to acquire Curry. Why? To get Lee.
If KP wants Lee, taking Curry is probably part of the price. We have the cap space to accommodate his salary.
If KP think Lee is the missing piece, and is willing to burn our cap space to get him, we acquire Lee and Curry for a second round pick and RLEC, and buy out Curry, or keep him as a 3rd string center and practice dummy. In this scenario, one of our collection of backup PFs gets traded/cut.
I don’t expect this to happen, but it wouldn’t amaze me or anything. If KP wants Lee, it’s going to cost a lot in one way or another.

Would Lee even be worth all that?
I’m not really that familiar with him…but doing a deal like that, better mean the guy is the second coming…of….someone.

In my opinion
no, he isn’t worth that. But the general scenario of using our cap space to eat someone’s really bad contract in order to get an asset we would like is sound. And I don’t know which players KP values.
It partly depends on who/what we would get with that cap space otherwise. If they decide we have the players we need, and really only want a role player, then you look at the role players available. If our only hole is backup PF, and Lee appears to be the best option for us to get a backup PF, then it’s worth it, I suppose.
