Darius Played Again ... Then Got Waived [updated]

At the risk of snapping our "consecutive posts with 100+ comments" streak, a quick note to say that Darius Miles played in the first half of tonight's game between Memphis and Minnesota.

So that's two down and eight to go.   Memphis does play tomorrow so there's a chance he can get 3 games in prior to the team's decision to guarantee or not guarantee his deal for the rest of the year. Whether he sticks with the Grizzlies should be known tomorrow , as originally reported.

Blogfather had a short piece about players getting cut, clearing waivers, etc. prior to the January 10th deadline that you should check out if you haven't already.

Also, no surprise here, but Chad Ford mentioned the usual trade suspects in his chat today...

Blazers have a ton of assets they'll most likely try to move by the trade deadline including guys like Channing Frye, Sergio Rodriguez, Ike Diogu and possibly Travis Outlaw.

Unrelated to anything but have you seen Lowposts.com?  Definitely worth a read. PG13.

UPDATE (11:14PM): Darius Miles was waived tonight. Story courtesy, as always, of Ronald Tillery.

Darius Miles logged seven minutes Tuesday night, the last time he'll see in a Memphis uniform.

At least for the foreseeable future.

The Grizzlies waived Miles soon after their 94-87 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 6-9 forward was told of the team's decision before the players and coaches boarded a plane for New Jersey, where the Griz play tonight.

DMiles blocked two shots in 7:23 of 1st half pt

One on Al Jefferson and one on Randy Foye. I think he would rank 4th on the Blazers in blocks for the season :)

He also missed a 20 footer, had his shot blocked by Kevin Love and grabbed 2 boards (one after being blocked by Love).

Shavlik Randolph Day of Reckoning Tomorrow

I believe he doesn’t have a guaranteed contract either. It’s tempting to cut him to free up a roster spot for the possibility of trades or bringing in someone on a 10-day to see if they could give you a boost while Roy and Webster are out.

at least not just yet. injuries can strike at any moment… as we have already witnessed this season. He deserves time just like the other newbies/rookies.

If not, then he could – COULD – be cut by Wednesday. Perhaps they are testing his worth by playing him a little.

I am not 100% on this, but I believe once the deadline is hit

if you sign a guy to a 10 -day contract (I believe it is days, not games) you can only do so twice, before his contract get’s guarenteed for the remainder of the season.

It is still within the realm of possibility that Miles gets in 10 games this season. But is also within the realm of possibility that I’m holding the winning Powerball ticket. The odds of either happening are not too far apart. (And as Dave has pointed out – so what if he does. It is not that big a deal.)

The odds have gone way up

now that Memphis cleared his suspension for him. Kind of nice of them to pay him for all those games, only to have him play 2.

Somebody with injuries at the 3 could pick him up as cover and he could grab 2-3 games that way. Once he gets within five games, a single 10 day contract could do it.

I don’t expect it, but I don’t think it’s that far-fetched any more.

wouldn’t he get $500k guaranteed? that’s a lot for the owners of a crappy team and for a has been cancer. i can see Boston, Cleveland, and other legit teams take a 10 day chance since they have the money and the locker room to stand him but other than that, i don’t see any takers.

I dont think we should think about trading sergio

I hate the thought of trading anyone, but can bear with letting Trout, Ike, or Shav go. I really like Channing, he fits in pdx sooooo well, but just not on the roster all that well. It would be sweet to have him around in case our bigs LA Oden Pryz get in foul trouble as they did against LA. He is a viable threat/ sub for LA, and I think should be the guy getting time over travis outlaw. He does not impress me especially lately.

I posted this in the Fanshot, but thought it was relevant and Norsktroll's reply

On NBATV

David Aldridge reported that if Miles contract goes back on Portland’s books, Portland would then be a luxury tax payer. Portland would pay into the pot that is distributed to the non-luxury tax teams at the end of the year.

So if you are a potential non-luxury tax team, taking on a couple of his very small 10-day contracts could be very beneficial to you and any other team in that situation. (I’m sure making you very popular with some ownerships.)

If this is true, I am 100% convinced now that Darius will play 10 games. Storyteller…please tell me I’m wrong.

Parkinglotj

Yup, it was a TrueHoop article with a salary expert I linked in my post on the Darius situation
Still, teams seem not too openly focused on screwing Portland just for the heck of it. Otherwise Memphis could have signed, played, and waived Miles far early to give him the ten games. But we shouldn’t feel all safe either, now that he served his suspension he becomes more attractive again.

by Norsktroll

If I heard right

A team would actually make money by playing Darius 8 more games. Lose a very little now and gain it back and more in the summer. Seems like a no-brainer to me, no matter how much I want to yak as I type this.

by parkinglotj on Jan 6, 2009 11:59 PM PST reply actions

However,

I think the NBA and the Blazers could potentially have a problem with this, and look into it. From what I have read here, which may or may not be the best source in the world, that sort of behavior would not be looked kindly upon by the NBA at all. Also, it would not fly well in the exclusive NBA Upper Management Club. If it really was that much of a no-brainer for teams to do it fiscally, one of those owners that loves trying to operate and NBA at the lowest cost possible would have done exactly that already. I don’t think that will happen.

As much as I am glad to see he got cut....

As a Blazers fan, this is good news for the cap situation, but the post earlier this week by Dave provided a bit more information on the topic.

The Blazers have planned for the future with the expectation of having Miles $9 million per season on the books, so if his salary gets put back on, there is no need to panic, but if it stays off we will find the team in a great situation.
The expiring contract of Raef LaFrentz should be another factor in the off season plans for the Blazers, his $10 million (i think) will come off the books which will be a big help should Miles go back on the books.

As a fan of the GAME itself, it’s a shame to see him get cut and possibly end his chance at a comeback, it would be pretty bad for this to prove to be the end of his career as he has shown he has the ability to contribute to a team which will give him the opportunity.

But I am sure we will hear more about this in the not too distant future, but I have been left with one question around the whole ‘10 games and the salary is back’ situation:
All posts and articles mention him playing the 10 games this season, if he did NOT play in 10 games this season, but manages to get a contract NEXT season, what happens with his salary?

Well this was a long post, but I am interested to see any outcomes from this news, and any opinions on my thoughts…..

by cLaRkY on Jan 7, 2009 6:23 AM PST reply actions

Next year doesn't hurt us

This is the summer that matters, so if Darius’ salary goes back on our books next year because he plays ten games NEXT season, it would matter for luxury tax reasons, and for salary cap status for in-season trades next season, but it can’t retroactively affect whatever the team is going to do THIS season, or this summer, even though technically his salary would be on the books for both seasons. They can’t make us UNSIGN a player we’ve already signed, after all.

I don’t feel bad for him. I was at Buffalo Wild Wings at Tanasbourne last year on a Sunday watching NFL. The Blazers were playing…I think it was at Toronto…anyway, D(bag)Miles used to be in there with his crew every Sunday and they were annoying as hell. During that game, I think BRoy nailed a 3 to win it at the end and everyone in BWW was high-fiving and Miles just sat there with his arms folded trying to look like he didn’t care. I used to feel semi-sorry for him, but after I saw that display I just said, “screw that guy”.

We used to see him in there almost every Sunday. We asked the waitress about them one time and she said they were super annoying and asked for all kinds of ridiculous things and demanded some kind of star treatment. She said the worst part is that they were the worst tippers in the whole place. So after tying up like 3 tables in the bar for hours on end and raising hell and acting like idiots, the poor waitresses got shafted. Classy.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
