The franchises of Mark Cuban and Paul Allen to the rescue
Another nice ESPN stat: The NBA Attendance Report. Only Portland and Dallas are more than sold out. Many others are still going very strong in harder times. Some arenas are dangerously empty. Why is this important? Combined with lower sponsorship and suite sales, it can have a lot of influence on the liquidity of a number of owners/franchises, potentially making players available they usually would not be willing to part with, just to avoid paying luxury tax. It also is significant for the height of the salary cap, and thus for the plans of a number of teams for 2009 and especially 2010. A falling cap would be a disaster for all teams trying to create space for LeBron & Co. When blood is running in the streets, buy as much as you can? Paul Allen still can be a major player.

It's how many fans a team "draws" at away games
You can pretty much expect games e.g. against the Celtics, Cavs, Lakers to sell really well. But of course for your own team, your home “stats” are important before everything else (such as revenue sharing).

From a purely predatory point of view
Which teams are $ desperate enough to trade us a Rubio flavored lotto pick and what would it take?

idk,
this is a weak draft, and there’s no guarantee that Rubio’s coming out. It’s pretty much the Blake Griffin sweepstakes at this point. James Harden could be interesting though, he’s a gifted scorer, thought to be the second coming of Roy.

I was thinking more along the line of
Having Rudy put it to Ricky that if he declares for this draft with the clearly stated intention of playing in Spain for 2 more years that makes him less desireable to lousy lotto teams who need help now but we would be cool with that.Bring Freeland over next year and we would be in the catbird seat down the road.$’s and where you go in the draft certainly is part of the picture but so is playing for a team with a shot at da rings or being in a Durant like situation.

Rubio is unlikely to declare for the 2009 draft
He has about 7 million Euro reasons to do so :)
That’s his reported buyout, and he would have to pay that himself. NBA teams can just give something like $500K towards that.

ESPN and a few other media outlets just want to keep the hype up. A number of serious mock draft sites have removed him from their rankings for that year.
