Treatise on the Merits of Acquiring David Lee AND Caron Butler

We are all wondering why would we trade for such a high-caliber PF like Lee and use him only as a backup for an already effective PF in Aldridge? Well what if Lee was Aldridge's replacement? Since we are much more desperate for an upgrade at SF than at backup PF, what if we were to turn around and deal Aldridge and Raef for a high-quality SF like Caron Butler? I know the idea of trading for Butler has been bandied about but none of the hypothetical offers really offered enough of an equal talent replacement for Caron without including one of the Big-3. I know that trading Aldridge would be a huge pill to swallow, but if think of this:

1. Our Toughness on the block needs to be improved. Aldridge is a great offensive player as well as O-rebounder, but as pointed out recently, his EFg % is really low for a PF, and his type of scoring can't carry a team when Brandon is injured or inneffective. Our Eggs are essentially in one basket right now.

2. On the subject of Brandon being injured. It has become apparent that our perimeter players simply cannot fill in when Brandon is out. Trading for Butler would not only give Brandon a great counterpart that takes the pressure of him on the perimeter but also allows for us to have a fighting chance when he is out

3. SF upgrade. Small forward has been our weakness this season, no doubt. We are relying to heavily on two very inconsistent players in Batum and Outlaw.
Batum can defend but when he scores over 2 a game it seems like a success, at this point with this team we can't afford to play 4 on 5 at the start of games. I'm not advocating trading him, but he shouldn't be our starter. Face it, games like Sunday's game are going to be flukes the rest of the season. Butler is a better defender at this point anyways.

Outlaw. I don't know what to say about Travis. Inconsistent. I would miss him. That is all.

Martell is the x factor in KP's decision. It would feel like a betrayal to trade him while he is injured. I think if we hypothetically traded Outlaw I think we may try Batum as the backup 4 in a small ball lineup and Martell as the backup 3. something Unorthodox has to be done with this roster

In Closing: I am not advocating trading LMA but I admit I am intrigued at the idea of parting with him if it means getting a player of Butler's caliber. ONLY if we can get a player like Lee to replace him. If we get Butler and we have to start Frye in LMA's spot, that is a loss. I think the benefits of the additions of Lee and Butler outweigh the negatives of losing Aldridge, Outlaw, Frye, Raef and whoever else would be included. I am not going to come up with the specifics of the trade proposal's, I'll leave that to you. Discuss.

Well considered,

though I don’t have a real opinion yet. My biggest concern is that this is Lee’s walk year, or am I incorrect in that impression?

I am definitely in the Butler-over-Lee camp. Can’t say I ever considered acquiring both, however. I’ll rec for being though provoking if nothing else.

a starting lineup of...

Blake, Roy, Butler, Lee and Oden would be a substantial upgrade over our current lineup in my opinion. I don’t know if this could be brought to fruition or what it would cost to do so.

Just hazarding a guess....

Aldridge and Outlaw plus….

Bayless or Sergio (it would be silly to give up both), but more likely Bayless
+
RLEC
+
Frye and or Digou
+
Draft picks, lots of draft picks

Other than Washington never wanting to trade Butler, I don’t think we’d get a deal going with either team if we were trying to offer them Aldridge. The Wizards have Jamison and the Knicks have Harrington.

what?

I wouldn’t call those players true anything. Jamison can rebound like a PF, but can hit outside shots. And I’m fairly sure Harrington is Aldridge with a 3 point shot.

They can both play PF too

and I don’t think Aldridge would compliment those players very well.

"a huge pill to swallow" how about it's a suppository...

My goodness I could cry , but if the move involves moving Travis, im all in. That starting lineup is disgusting and I mean that in a good way.

Lee and LMA are both average defenders

LMA is a slightly better shooter,Lee is a much better rebounder and there is no way he would be going to be happy as LMA’s backup.Butler and Wallace are both good defenders, quality guys in every way but with Martell and Nic having the potential to be a solid combo at the 3 they would cost too much,How about if we trade Travis and goodies to da Grizz fo Marc Gascol,I would do any thing to get rid of Travis and he would be better off as well

Boy Travis

is really becoming Jarret Jack circa 07/08. IE designated whipping boy. I blame Blake more for our last two losses but that might just be because I don’t expect much from Outlaw and expect alot from Blake.

Yeah I'm up and down

about Rudy right now. I’m pretty down on your could care less guys. Blake would hurt to see go due to loss of calming influence and outside shooting but Im sick SICK of his fear of the paint and inability to run the break. Bayless looks better and better the past two games and by that I mean Blake has looked awful and Bayless is jogging in place.

This is where my ended up as well after reading through the trade rumor thread...

I think the real issue is how Aldridge plays with Oden and how Lee would play with Oden. Aldridge seems like a match made in heaven next to Oden, but maybe KP and company aren’t as convinced that Aldridge is a good fit. If you think about it, the better Oden gets, the more he is going to demand the ball in the post. If KP thinks Oden can develop into that go to post player on offense, Lee might be a better fit. He scraps, hustles, doesn’t need the ball to be effective and turns garbage into points with his relentless effort. His rebounding would be much appreciated as well, I know we are already a good rebounding team, but I see no reason to think an improvement in that area would be insignificant. Going from a good rebounding team to a great rebounding team is always a good thing. It would also give a more traditional structure to the team with a post up center, and a scrappy powerforward that lives on the glass. Defensively, you can count on Lee to gather up those altered Oden shots a lot more than Aldridge, even if Lee is not as good of a defender overall. How many times have we seen Oden/Joel alter or block a shot only for it to land right in the opponents lap for an easy score. Lee would certainly help end those possesions where we play good D but don’t secure the board.

As much as I love the thought of Butler and Lee, I can’t even speculate as to what would be better. I think making this trade idea could be a very good thing, but I also think keeping Oden and LMA together could be a very good thing. Thank goodness we have KP making these decisions….

yep

I think the idea that you have to have a shooting big man next to Oden is wrong. A garbage man is a great fit next to an elite post player… if Oden becomes that, Lee would be a great fit.

Don't give up on Bayless, if that means no on David Lee so be it; After Stuckey (summer league MVP) finally played his first game (was injured until Dec. 22 of 2007)

He struggled for several games before getting his sea legs. I think Bayless is similar to Stuckey in that they are both combo guards that can score in the paint and create shots for others, but neither are really known for being very great at shooting or having amazing court vision. Maybe Bayless, with this “opportunity” for PT, will start to put up some Stuckey-esque numbers, and soon. BTW TiH’s idea about starting bayless seems pretty logical, but it would be nice to see him put up some decent numbers off the bench first.

Rodney Stuckey: Struggling
Update: Aaron Afflalo came off the bench before Stuckey Monday as Stuckey’s struggles continued.
Analysis: Stuckey played 13 minutes to Afflalo’s seven, but the offense has been stagnant with Stuckey on the floor during the past month. The Pistons will be patient with him, but if the second unit continues to struggle, he’ll probably find himself on the bench more and more often.

Stuckey was coming off an injury, but seemed to be getting more PT than Bayless. I understand this “logjam” at PG, and I understand Bayless will play shooting guard. Perhaps Bayless just needs to start playing a little more, i know it’s got to be tough for Nate to have so many rooks out on the floor, but you are starting 3 rooks whist brandon is out anyway, might as well let bayless get used to playing more than 2 minutes during garbage at a time.

I know this seems off topic but lots of people are talking about trading bayless willy nilly and it seems a little hasty and not something KP would do.

isnt a knock on his talents….its simply trading a potentially good player for a proven commodity.

no thanks

I love Lee, but that’s too much to give up for Lee and Bulter (who you are obviously a homer of).

by Bust a Bucket on Jan 5, 2009 10:15 PM PST up reply actions

I think Lee is the perfect back up

in this league. But his defense is just horrible, way to horrible to start on a contending team. Does everyone remember Joel’s defense 3 years ago where he just grabbed people and Z-Bo’s defense where he just let them drive by him, well combine those two defenses and you have Lee’s Defense.

While LMA still has a ways to go on defense, he is miles ahead of Lee, and has the potential to be all-defensive 1st team, while Lee does not. Lee projects to be a top 6th man energy guy off the bench, worth maybe $50 million over 6 years.

by usmcr3049 on Jan 5, 2009 9:09 PM PST reply actions

What kills me is that...

Jiggamant calls David Lee a “high caliber PF” ??? I’m sorry what? Where did that come from? As said above LA has a skill set that will (hopefully) mesh with Oden’s inside game. David Lee??? he operates in a completely different offense than the Blazers. The reason he wasn’t starting 2 years ago was Isaiah ran a half court offense and Lee is completely ineffective in the half court. They had to give him run with the more gun it second unit (you know the one Nate Robinson ran) This years numbers are a little misleading as you put him in D’antoni’s offense and so his value becomes inflated.

by SamGoody on Jan 5, 2009 9:50 PM PST reply actions

that's why people have a hard on for him

they think he’ll fit into the 2nd unit w/ sergio and such. problem is a “high caliber” forward in the east is a normal forward in the west, by and larger they’re competition is less fierce, and they don’t play much defense, put those together and you get deceptively good stats.

Aldridge for Butler by itself

is moronic. Butler doesn’t fit here. His game is contradictory to what we need. His age is contradictory to what we ought to want.

by as11osu on Jan 5, 2009 10:35 PM PST reply actions

Lee can rebound

but he is a sub-par defender on average. Brandon Roy has a higher BPG average Lee: .34per Roy: .39per. He does get over a steal a game though but i believe thats due to the sytem he plays in. I have honestly watched little to no film of Lee so that is a semi informed opinion. The notion he is better than LMA now or ever is honestly nuts. LMA has been playing outstanding for us this year, the ONE and ONLY area he is struggling is field goal %. That will come around. Not on crack would i trade Lee for LMA. Aldrige gives us scoring, length, average shot blocking, over a steal a game(like Lee), runs like a deer, and is one of the best offensive rebounders at his position in the league. The notion he is soft should be challenged by that last stat, anyone who ever played organized basketball on any level knows O-boards are the toughest boards to get bar none.
