Martell Webster's return should be imminent

On Dec. 10th this article states that Martell is to be out 4 weeks.

Webster is expected to miss the next four weeks after experiencing pain in the little toe joint (head of the fifth metatarsal bone) of his left foot during Sunday’s game against Toronto. The pain is near the site where a stress fracture developed during the preseason and sidelined Webster for the first month of the season.

Jan. 7th (Wednesday) is exactly 4 weeks from the time of the above article.  It would be nice for him to come back and contribute, especially while Roy is out.  Will Roy's injury status push Martell back into the rotation quicker?  What perimeter player is going to step in Roy's absence?  Probably not Martell since it is going to take him a little while to get back into playing shape...but he can help in spot minutes.

Thanks...I edited it.

I was going to say something clever like he is the toy version of Martell, but I don’t have the energy or creativity at the moment.

by JasonT on Jan 3, 2009 5:42 PM PST up reply actions

Well

we could play him at the 2, correct? That’s what he was supposed to play when we drafted him.

Foot injuries scare me… I wouldn’t be holding my breath for him to come back.

I saw an update from yahoo sports today

That says he’s out another couple of weeks. I’m not sure what their source was.

from what i understand they are taking it slow with martell. i don’t think his return is imminent.

I am kind of tired of all this "taking it slow"

Making the playoffs this season is very important. Obviously you don’t want to rush players back, but you can go too far in the other direction also. This January stretch is absolutely crucial— this is a month where we must run up a strong record.

i hear you on the importance of this stretch. i think “taking it slow” is probably code words for “martell is just not ready yet.”

by Ben Golliver on Jan 3, 2009 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

Why?

We are probably going to get bounced in the first round anyway? Isn’t the long term health and development of our young players more important?

yeah foot injuries are creepy

can’t ever tell when they’re gonna flare up or when they’re gonna actually heal. All we can hope is that Marty does everything he can as far as diet and strengthening exercises go.

lots of work been keeping me away from commenting

I still read BE almost every day. My daughter watches all the games with me and that keeps me from commenting in the game threads. I’d rather comment in real life and talk with her during the commercial breaks.

Getting playoff experience is very important.

I’d rather get bounced in the first round this year and get some experience rather than not make it again. We need to start getting playoff experience sometime. It might as well be this year.

Getting to the playoffs would give team a huge boost of confidence. Look at Atlanta last year. They had a losing record but they made the playoffs and took Boston to 7 games. Now, look at them this year 21-11 and 4th in the East.

Don’t bring back Martell too early, but don’t keep him out too long. We need to be in those playoffs. It’s part of the progression.

Martell needs to go shopping

He has worn the same jacket to the past 5 home games.

I thought I was the only one that noticed that!

He was stuck on that one jacket with the loops on the shoulders (not quite Members Only), and now it’s bee n this other one.

He needs to throw down with a whistle and flute (a suit).

It will be awhile yet

From the Columbian Dec. 27th
"Webster’s return uncertain
X-rays performed on Martell Webster’s injured left foot on Thursday showed the Blazers forward is healing as expected. But his return could still be several weeks away.

Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said Webster could be cleared to take off his protective orthopedic boot in two weeks, but that will signal the start of rehabilitation. Webster could be out a week or longer after that point, though Pritchard declined to speculate how long the rehab could last."

That is 3+ weeks from the 27th. The 17th at the earliest. After we get Roy back hopefully.

Actually

some people think that players are worse the less you see them. Take people’s response to Wade. They dropped him off the Kobe/Lebron/Wade super star list. The guy deserved to be on it. Now he’s back and people act like he was never off it.

Webster IS good though. Sucks his return and improvement was delayed because he’ll be playing make-up again.

Funny feeling

For some reason I feel like he’s going to be out all year. Why haven’t we heard more about his status? I want a Martell’s health blog.

Life is hilarious.

fraid so. fraid you may be right about Marty being out all year.

And if staying out all year is what Marty needs to do in order to make sure his foot is fully healed, then so be it. Jeez with all the rookies playing this year you’d think we’d be tanking big time, but we’re not. That is cool, isn’t it? I dread that we may go on a tanking streak though, esp if we don’t get Marty back within a month or so. Probably Nic’s poor showings of late are attributable to the rigors of the NBA schedule. Rookies are just not game for all these rigors. Oh well, better than rigor mortis, I suppose. I’d hate to have that but Robespierre said that death is the best doctor.

This year is all about development.

We are starting a rookie centre, a rookie small forward because our regular small forward has been injured all season, our two star players are going through their third seasons and we have a journeyman point guard starting. Can you see how rediculous thaat looks to other teams fans? Of course, we see two all stars, a future dominant centre, a future defensive machine and a more than capable point guard, along with one strong bench. But we’re all homers aren’t we?
Those two rookies need development this year, this team needs to get themselves together and figure out who they are and we need to learn some tough lessons. I desperately want them to make the play offs. just to get the feel of it, and maybe some hunger to come back, but we are going to get blown out of the water there, our defense will be absoloutely decimated. We need more time to get everything together, I celebrate every success this team has but I know we are not contenders right now. Give us time, let Martell come back later.

Martell, and the team, are not ready. Patience is the way to go.

by BeloHorizante on Jan 4, 2009 6:24 AM PST reply actions

Keeping our eyes on the prize.....

I think “decimated” is a little over the top. If the Blazers are at full strength by April, with Martell back at the “3” and Oden with another 45 games of experience, the Blazers will be a very dangerous team.

I am not saying they will beat the L@kers, but they will have a chance against everybody. Seeding will be very important important. The Blazers are primarily a jump shooting team, they only have to get hot and win one road game to pull off a first round upset.

I agree with you that this year is primarily about player development and player evaluation. The team is likely going to add at least one rotation player through trade of RLEC or through FA. Getting the right player, to complement our current roster is critical to our eventual success. KP and Nate need to figure out what we have in order to figure out what we need:

1) We need to know if Martell and Batum can do the job at the “3”.

2) We need to decide whether we need a veteran PG, or which two of our three PGs are going to stay.

3) We need to figure out if we need a banger at back up PF.

4) We need to decide if we still need Trout’s “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” routine coming off the bench.

Figuring out the right answers to these questions is far more important than whether or not we win a few games this month, or even whether or not we make the playoffs.

I’m still optimistic. I just saying that if injuries and a high level of competition do drag us down, it is not the end of the world and it does not mean that we won’t be back with a major vengeance next year. We all need to not panic at a little adversity and keep our eyes on the prize.

by upper left corner on Jan 4, 2009 7:46 AM PST reply actions

Good stuff

I agree with all but #3…because anyone with eyes can see that this roster needs a better backup than Frye and Diogu at the PF position. “Maybe” next year Joe Freeland “could” be that guy, or “maybe” KP will target someone in the draft to fill that role. But right now, this month, KP could deal the expiring contracts that “could” hamstring the cap space next July (Frye, Diogu) and get a veteran PF/C who can bang (Wilcox) who is also UFA at season’s end.

There may be other (better) deals out there that combine either Frye or Diogu with RLEC, but there’s no reason to wait until the summer to improve the roster, especially if the move brings in a veteran who can help the team hang onto their playoff spot, and doesn’t “cost” the team a player they want to keep evaluating, or affect KP’s payroll flexibility going forward.

Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard on Tuesday said Webster’s doctors decided that he should remain in his protective orthopedic boot for another two weeks, then re-evaluate. Once post-boot rehab is factored in, and Webster returns to practices and gets into game shape, Pritchard thought Webster could be looking at close to the All-Star Break before being ready for a full return to action.
