Fisticuffs Fallout
Joe Freeman reports that Joel Przybilla has been fined $7500 and assessed a Flagrant One foul against his ledger for his part in the mini-altercation last evening. Tyson Chandler's Flagrant Two has been upheld plus he has been suspended one game, which will turn out to be tonight's game against the Nuggets.

Is Joel suspended for a Flagrant One Foul?

No
You are allowed a certain number of them in the season—12 or 16 or something like that, I’d have to look it up—and then you are suspended for every one after. But Joel will be nowhere near that limit.

so why arent you guys going off, ranting and raving, making youtube videos and calling chandler a scumbag, and wish career ending injuries upon him…or do you just do that with KG?
by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 3, 2009 1:36 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
There have been videos posted
Look in the sidebar.
Don’t assume that every Blazer fan is like some of the idiots who wandered over to your site.
One difference is that the league has actually enforced the rules with Chandler. If they enforced their rule on taunting with KG, people wouldn’t be so angry.
Do you actually endorse the things KG is seen doing in those videos?
Chandler is quickly becoming one of the most hated players in Portland. Prior incidents were just nutty/stupid, but this time he actually tried to injure one of our most loved players. It will be ugly next time he comes to Portland.

The difference
Chandler isn’t half as over the top as KG (the thing with Joel was both guys 50/50, imo), doesn’t just pick on Euros/12th men, came at Joel head up rather than your boy’s usual blindside pick while dipping his shoulder/elbow to the back of the head, was ready to go when they squared up rather than backpedaling like a wuss,…should I go on or is that enough to get the point across?
Bayless has been testing the fences for weaknesses

simple reason.
Chandler got punished.
Makes all the difference.

KG
actually did get suspended this year already….he did nothing to warrant a suspension against the Blazers
by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 3, 2009 4:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And what KG did to warrant a suspension was actually less than what chandler did…buh bye
by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 3, 2009 4:20 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
he didn't do anything in the last game
..except maybe elbow LA in the head from behind, but we’ll let that go.
but getting on all fours and barking like a dog at Bayless?
by LicketyBrindle on Jan 3, 2009 4:20 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That doesnt warrant a suspension
And I can understand why an opposing fan wouldnt like it….but suspension or even a fine for that would be pretty dumb
by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 3, 2009 4:21 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
So KG knows how to tick off opposing fans
by acting like an, um, rectum without getting ejected or suspended.
Forgive us for being ticked off.

Like I said
KG got suspended this year so how can you say he doesnt get punished? and as much as you hate him he’s never once lost his cool as much as chandler did with Joel i n 15 years in the league.
Getting down on all floors (I dont know where you get the barking from) in a defensive stance is something bad? lmao..

Look...
KG does what he does. It’s designed to be intimidating, irritating, infuriating. It’s pretty effective. It’s mostly legal. Celtics fans love him and defend him. I probably would too, if I were from Boston. Other fans hate him, because the only thing more irritating than a guy dropping 50 on you is a guy repeatedly elbowing your guy in the head. Even if it’s legal.
I hated Bill Laimbeer, too. He won championships too.
So quit whining about us not hating Chandler, or anyone else (well, maybe Kobe) as much as KG. Chandler lost his temper. KG repeatedly, intentionally, effectively does what he does. And we hate him for it. And you love him for it. Case closed.

for what he did to calderon for sure. what he did is far worse than when dikembe points his finger at a player when he blocks their shot.

League rules
say it is a technical foul for taunting. Apparently there’s an unwritten KG exception, or he’d be getting T’d up for his doggy stuff, among other things.

Technically
Mutumbo points at the fans, which is why he gets away with it. League rules specify you can’t direct your taunts at players, only the fans.

How do you not respond in that situation and still keep your integrity as a team leader?

It makes sense though.
After seeing the replay, I couldn’t really believe Joel got away with just a personal foul, while Chandler got ejected and a Flagrant 2. This seems fairer.

Joel can afford it, no biggie. :)
However, if you wanted to create a fake charity, name it something like “The society for wrist injuries,” and go over to Chandlers’ house and convince him to donate $7,500, then pay off Joel’s fine with that… I’d find that fun.

length of suspension
i think a two game suspension would have been more appropriate. he knew joel had an injury and purposefully struck that spot and then hit him with a big forearm. cheap shotting someone’s injured wrist is pretty low

The fine is no biggie.
Chandler’s one game is sufficient in my opinion. Joel responded like anyone else but it was a response nonetheless. Let’s hope there’s bad blood brewing between these teams (David West taking Brandon down hard last game) because I have a feeling it could get ugly over the years.

unbelievable… they refer to Joel as “Prissy.” Makes me wish Joel had boxed Chandlers ears in.

I'm sorry....
Can someone explain to me what Joel did wrong?
I see a physical forearm bar in post play. That happens fifty times a game, and never gets called for anything, let alone a flagrant.
by LicketyBrindle on Jan 3, 2009 4:15 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
They fined him for appearence sake
Chandler slapped Joel’s wrist then Joel let him know that he didn’t like that and put a forearm in his chest. Joel was ready to keep playing and looked back at the ball in play. Tyson just flipped out and threw an elbow.

Hornets fan here...
Chandler was not taking a cheap shot at Joel’s injury. Anyone who follows the Hornets and Chandler knows he’s not that kind of guy, and it’s just a baseless assumption anyway. All that happened was that Chandler got irritated and overreacted. Chandler has always been known as an emotional player and this time he let it go overboard and made a dumb mistake. Big deal. He deserved the punishment but don’t make more out of it than what is actually there.
by Caleb462 on Jan 3, 2009 5:43 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Caleb462--
I agree with you. I don’t think Chandler’s a bad guy (see my explanation of why we still hate KG more than him above.) and I agree with your assessment – the physicality just got out of hand.
I’ll even go so far as to say he did not intentionally karate chop Joel’s bad wrist. But to say he didn’t know he HAD a bad wrist? Man, at least ’fess up when you make a mistake.
by LicketyBrindle on Jan 3, 2009 7:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Chandler just lost his cool when he threw the elbow. I doubt those two hate each other enough to seriously fight.

Guys take cheap shots all the time
if you’re hurt, that area will be bumped 20 times during the game. It’s dirty, but people do what they need to to win.
I’m willing to bet Chandler did it on purpose and that’s not a baseless assumption, although it could be false. maybe he did forget in the heat of the moment. I doubt it though.
Do I think Chandler is a bad guy? naw… but I was ready to take his head off that game (or rather and more likely have my own detached from my body)

big plastic braces on your arm
are not a new fashion craze.
I find it absolutely laughable that Chandler didn’t have a clue, “No, not at all.” about Joel’s wrist. Come on, he played how many minutes right next to Joel, seeing him from all angles and seeing that arm up high around the basket, but it never occurred to him that the brace was significant? Wow, that’s observant.
