What former all-star will Portland trade for?

I stumbled onto this very intriguing trade when surfing the net. I think it is very possible that Blazers will pull off this deal, while others may think that it's ludicrous. Here is the link to the original blog article where you can see the comments of other Zer Fans. [Click Here]

In 12/29/08 Trail Blazer Courtside, Mike Barrett predicts a blockbuster trade before the trade deadline for a former all-star using Raef LaFrenz’s contract.

Using the list of all-stars from 2003-2008 we will start with 57 all-stars (including Brandon Roy). Let’s start the process of elimination and see what we have left.

Current All-Stars – 24 players
  • Barrett says a “former” all-star, so we eliminate the “current” 24 all-stars
  • Eastern: Ray Allen, Chaucey Billups, Chris Bosh, Richard Hamilton, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Antawn Jamison, Joe Johnson, Jason Kidd, Paul Pierce, Dwayne Wade, Rasheed Wallace
  • Western: Carmello Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Paul, Brandon Roy, Amare Stoudamire, David West, Yao Ming
30 and over club – 20 players
  • Mike Rice said in the past look for a 28 yrs or younger player. I’ll be generous and say no 30 and over.
  • Vince Carter, Sam Cassell, Steve Francis, Kevin Garnett, Manu Ginobli, Grant Hill, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Michael Jordan, Jamaal Magloire, Stephon Marbury, Shawn Marion, Kenyon Martin, Jamaal Mashburn, Brad Miller, Jermaine O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal, Gary Payton, Peja Stojakovic, Antoine Walker, Ben Wallace.
The Big Three – 5 players
  • Pritchard will be looking to fill a position not occupied by the Roy, Aldridge or Oden. So we eliminate true SGs, PFs and C.
  • Pau Gasol, Elton Brand, Rashard Lewis, Mehmet Okur, Michael Redd
Playoff bound teams – 5 players
  • Playoff teams, especially conference rivals seem highly unlikely they would trade their star to Portland unless we traded a star.
  • Ron Artest, Josh Howard, Andrei Kirilenko, Tracy McGrady, Tony Parker
Team Culture and Position Preferences – 2 players
  • Pritchard is very big on any player fitting in with team culture. Nate wants for: PG – pass first, shoot second, defensive priority and SF – good offensive player and defensive player second.
  • Gilbert Arenas & Baron Davis
Who is left? – Caron Butler
  • Caron Butler, SF, 6’7”, 228 lbs., 6 yrs as a pro.
  • Former All-Star: Butler was a 2007 All-Star
  • 28 years or younger per Mike Rice – Butler is 28 – born 3/13/80
  • Team culture – Butler recognized by The Sporting News as one of the top “Good Guys” in sports in 2006 for his charitable endeavors.
  • Career Stats – 16.3 PPG, 6 RPG, 2.9 APG, 1.7 SPG, 0.3 BPG, 2.2 SPG, .443 FG%, .318 3P%, .852 FT%
  • From Hollinger, EPSN – Butler has emerged as one of the best mid-range shooters in basketball. He’s also money from the foul line.
  • Comparison: Scottie Pippen

    • Charlotte
      • Outgoing: Gerald Wallace & Raymond Felton

I like the effort, but..

I don’t think that any of the deals work. The first one is the closest though. Maggette is not enough in #2. Charlotte doesn’t get enough in deal #3 and I can’t think that coach Brown would want Outlaw. Charlotte might want Miller in deal #4, but that’s too much to give up.

by parkinglotj on Jan 3, 2009 11:59 AM PST reply actions

Seems like over-parsing

to interpret “former all-star” to eliminate all current all stars. I think a pretty reasonable interpretation of that language is “someone who has been an all star” which includes those 24 players you start by excluding. Heck, if you consider that this is a sportscaster who’s talking kind of off the cuff, I’d extend this to mean “any player who’s kind of a star in the league, whether officially an allstar or not”.

I also question whether we really wouldn’t trade for a PF. I tend to think that one of the buzzed about trades on fansites of LMA+RLEC+sweeteners for Bosh makes a lot of sense for both teams.

Also, Rashard is naturally a SF who’s playing out of position at PF. And I’m not sure I agree that Kirilenko, Josh Howard, or Artest are unavailable just because they play on playoff teams.

But good work clarifying that we’re not pursuing Michael Jordan or Jamaal Magloire.

Not all-stars, but close

Non-playoff teams.

Gerald Wallace
Ben Gordon
Kevin Martin
Jose Calderon
Mike Miller
Richard Jefferson
Danny Granger
Devin Harris
Stephen Jackson
Monta Ellis
Andre Iguodala

I probably missed some.

No chance to get Harris, Granger and Martin.

by parkinglotj on Jan 3, 2009 12:49 PM PST reply actions

What if we ask really nicely?

AHHH I want Harris or Granger so bad!!!

I think Butler would be an amazing fit for the Blazers if we could entice the Wizards to deal him.

Agreed.

Harris and Granger are two guys that I wanted so badly BEFORE they blew up into the studly players they are this year.

Neither of them are available anymore, that’s obvious.

Butler would make my day. I love his game and think he would fit really well in this team. Blake has pretty much taken over the 3pt duty in the starting line up, but even so Butler can hit them when called upon. I think with the right deal (which would probably have to include Travis, sorry ATF) we could maybe get Washington to hand him over. I would be EXTREMELY hesitant if they wanted Pryz though. Oden still needs time.

by Bskey on Jan 4, 2009 1:58 AM PST up reply actions

Also..

Butler would make Roy’s life so much easier on the court. He would see less double teams, and play off the ball a lot more in the early parts of the game.

by Bskey on Jan 4, 2009 2:01 AM PST up reply actions

I will oppose the idea of Butler in red/black

Until I hear/read one of the following

1) Butler has actually been acquired by KP
2) Butler apologizes for punching Roy in the groin, last season
3) Roy says he’s “aiight” with Caron coming to Portland

I prefer him to Iguodala, but I think that Iguodala is more attainable.

I would love to have Butler

I don’t think Outlaw and LaFrentz would be enough (unless we are dealing with another Memphis firesale). When looking at trades it seems that either talent or salary is the motivation. I don’t think a Butler for RLEC and Outlaw is motivating for Washington since Butler’s contract is actually reasonable. If he were making AK47 money, than maybe they would be motivated to move him. That said, I think we would have to give them more young talent to pry Butler away. As mentioned before, I still think Bosh should be a target. I think Toronto and Washington are both teams that would be willing to deal with us. They are both underacheiving and may be looking to unload salaries for young talent. Could we pull this one off? I wish…

Washington:
Outgoing: Butler and Thomas
Incoming: Diogu, Kapono, Outlaw, and Frye

Toronto:
Outgoing: Bosh and Kapono
Incoming: LaFrentz, Aldridge, and Rodriguez and Portland’s 2009 1st round pick

Portland:
Outgoing: Diogu, RLEC, Aldridge, Rodriguez, Frye, and Outlaw and 2009 1st round pick
Incoming: Bosh, Butler and Thomas

They're already locked into Gilbert Arenas

for a gagillion dollars. And they’ve got some young talent even if it’s injured (Haywood). I don’t see what we want to offer them that they would actually take.

I want #1 to happen so bad

Not only would it be a steal, but I love Javaris Crittenton as a big, combo guard to audition for a spot in the rotation. I can’t help it, but I’m obsessed with a starting line up with no one shorter than 6’4 (and all long), that would be sweet.

I like #1

and would love to get Caron Butler. I couldn’t dislike him even when he was with the L**ers. They’re going nowhere, so why couldn’t this happen? I like that the deal provides for both short- and long-term needs.

One objection to the post that I must mention: I am a Trail Blazers fan. I’m a Blazers fan. I’m a Portland fan. I am NOT a “Zers” fan.

by Badalona Baddie on Jan 3, 2009 4:03 PM PST reply actions

I actually had thought of this scenario before Barrett brought it up...

Butler would be a huge huge coup if we could get him. He has everything the blazers need at the SF position-experience, defense, shooting, and the ability to take over if necessary (the anti-Outlaw). And he can do things besides score. And playing with Arenas and Kobe means he has learned how to work with a lead guard that handles the ball a great deal. Getting Etan Thomas would get us an extra tough big dude that would fit in well in Portland, at the very least. Crittenton also has some game from the small flashes of him I’ve seen…

by Waltonia on Jan 3, 2009 4:25 PM PST reply actions

Etan Thomas

I know he’s largely a throw in in this proposal to make this work $ wise, but something tells me the whole Portland vibe would suit him quite well :). Seriously, even if you don’t agree with all of his political opinions, it’s nice to see an athlete who is both well informed and willing to share his views.

Butler

I dont see the Wiz wanted to trade Butler. They just signed Arenas to a max contract, and they havent seen him on the court since. They have started slow, but I am sure they want to get their team to full strength before they dismantle it. Even tho the the Celtics, Cavs and Magic are tough, it isnt unreasonable to think the Wizards could make a run at the #4 playoff spot next year in a weak east, and could even sneak into the playoffs this year as a #8, if Arenas returns. If I am the WIzards, I continue to build around Butler and Arenas.

or

Butler, OR…..Carmello Anthony. Kind of a longshot, but if you see the nuggs as tired of Anthony and dumping salary…(AI}….they maybe RLEC, Channing Frye and Bayless would get it done. They get a huge salary dump, plus some young talent.

We get a stud of a SF with some risks involved.

Looking back at the Dec 3 trade for Jamison post

I think people are willing to pay far too much. This is a buyers market where losing teams with high payrolls and declining revenue are desperate to clean up their balance sheets. I’ll bet we can get Caron Butler or just about any player we want. It may cost RLEC + 2-3 prospects + 1st round pick maybe even more but definitely possible. Nothing and no one is sacred or untouchable when owners start counting the lucre so why settle for second best.

So Sorry Friend

It seems Sergio is at the middle of many of these rumors. He has excellent value for the right team. That might even be the Blazers.

by oregonslee on Jan 4, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

Why would the Wiz trade Butler for RLEC?

Just because a team is bad doesn’t mean it wants to dump salary. As somebody said above, getting rid of a contract is only a GOOD thing if it’s a bad contract. Not only is Butler’s deal not a bad contract, it’s a really good one. Butler’s young, he rebounds, he plays D, and scores, he’s unselfish, he’s a good character guy.

The Wiz would only trade him for top shelf (no, not Outlaw) talent in return.

Jamison is probably available, on the other hand, and he’s also a former all-star. I think it’s a stretch to eliminate everyone from consideration who’s over 30.

This team has PLENTY of young talent. Guys like Billa who are a little bit older are enormously valuable in teaching the young guys how to win. I wouldn’t be surprised at all in the Blazers bring in a guy 30-32 years old to help bridge the gap of the present with the future.

I would cross off guys who are in the neighborhood of 34-35, though, unless they’re available at a super bargain. Whatever move is made, it’ll be looking to the next three years, not THIS year, and guys around that age fall off sharply in terms of production. I’m looking at you, Stevie Nash.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Jan 4, 2009 2:09 PM PST reply actions

They wouldn't

trade for RLEC, but they’d trade for the right combination. They’re stuck with Gilbert A. and Atawn J. doesn’t have as much value as the fans believe so Caron B. is their most tradeable, desireable player. Washington reminds me of San Antonio 12 years ago when they bombed for a season and lucked into the Duncan lottery pick. Washington’s a good team having a lottery season. They won’t have a better chance to improve their team in such a short time as this and next year. The draft lottery and Caron Butler will allow the Wizards to completely restructure in a short period of time at basically no cost.
