Why isn't GO top ten? With a Poll
I decided to take a look at the T-Mobile rookie report and was surprised to see a shot of Greg at the top of the article. I read further and found he still hadn't cracked the top ten.
Poking around in the NBA stats center I noticed these interesting tidbits concerning our big guy.
Among rookies -
Blocks 2nd
Dbl Dbls 1st
Eff 7th
FG% 4th
Pts/Rebs/assists 11th
Rebs 3rd
Pts 14th
Minutes 13th
Respect ?

He really hasn't played well enough.
And that’s to say that he hasn’t played to expectations. He’s not like other high-lottery rookies, in that the team does not need to rely solely on him for any meaningful production. Plus, most of what he does that makes him so valuable doesn’t show up in the stat sheet. That’ll kill you every time.

Agreed
Oden has been talked about as a once in generation talent for years and thus peoples expectations were that he would come in and be like Shaq from Day One, which hasn’t happened.

Exactly my thoughts.
Until Oden is an MVP candidate people will say he’s a bust. That is the name of the game for a guy a like Oden.
I would say that Vince Carter has fought that perception his whole career. Year in and year out Vince is a monster, and yet IMO he gets nowhere near the respect he deserves, because he was supposed to be the second coming of Jordan or whatever.
Greg is gonna get some love, but probably not real soon.

Not enough consistency.....
While he has been playing outstanding ball the last five games, he has had far too many lows mixed in with the stellar performances. If he continues to play as he has recently throughout the rest of the season, I have little doubt that he will be in contention for the ROY.

Whoever compiled that...
must be afraid to eat crow.
It won’t matter by the end of the year. Everyone will realize they were wrong about the kid. There won’t be denying that he’s a special player.

He's been great as of late.
If he keeps putting up numbers similar to what he’s done recently, he will DEFINITELY be in there by the end of the season.
Hollinger had this to say:
Mike (Portland, OR): What do you think about Oden’s recent play. (16-11) over the last 5 games, and he abused Okafor last night. If he keeps this up is he going to get some mention for ROY?
SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:30 PM ET ) Oden has stepped it up of late, which is great news for the Blazers, but ROY is so heavily dependent on minutes that I don’t think he’s going to surpass Mayo and Rose … even though I think he’s the best player of the three at the moment.
(emphasis mine)
Rudy, Rudy, Rudy,
Roy, Roy, Roy!

It's reasonable to have him anywhere from around 5th to 12th on a list of rookies.
He’ll rise pretty soon if he keeps doing what he’s been doing last couple of weeks. He needs to stay productive and avoid the 2 pt 1 reb type games he was having earlier this month. That kind of extreme inconsistency is what critics like McMenamin rightly point out.

My daily post during my fake "leave of absence"
Having Oden out of the top 10 at this point is flat out inexcusable. It represents a complete failure to use any stats other than ppg, apg and rpg— no per minute adjustment, no pace adjustment, no realization that Oden is clearly improving as the season goes on. I can live with him being behinds some o the guys playing big minutes like Mayo and Rose, but having him behind people like Jason Thompson, Beasley, Gordon, and Chalmers is flat out pathetic. Kevin Love isn’t in that guy’s top 10 either, which is just flat out embarrasing— Love is already one of the top 5 rebounders in the entire NBA (and Oden’s in the top 10).
Simply put, McMennamin’s list is making use of old fashioned, non-pace or minute adjusted (read: irrelevant) statistics and should not be respected, at all, by anyone.
Greg Oden has been one of the top 5 rookies so far this season. Period.

but his stats aren’t shiny. Shiny is all people pay attention to. Substance is wasted on most.

Time Will Tell
Once the Blazers take the NW and are a top 3 seed after a hot 2nd half of the season. GO will in the ROY talk and the NBA will tremble in fear as their big 3 start pounding their chests in preparation for a first round butt kicking.

Hollinger discusses rookie/soph snubs
Cliffs notes: Love got hosed, Eric Gordon shouldn’t be there, Ramon Sessions is way more deserving than Aaron Brooks and Carl Landry and JaMario Moon have legit complaints about being passed over in favor of Al Thornton and Wilson Chandler.

Yeah its weird
to see Love ahead of Oden in the ESPN ranking but both of them aren’t in the t-moble NBA.com rankings
by SamGoody on Jan 29, 2009 3:10 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
McMenamin at NBA.com bases his rankings more on entire season performance.
Thorpe at ESPN bases it more on how they’re doing now.
Love and Oden both started off pretty bad. They’ve both improved a lot recently. So Thorpe takes recent performance into account a lot lot more and shows them higher. Thorpe’s in general is more fluid because he doesn’t take as long a view.

That's easy
Shiny stats haven’t been there.
Points are the shiniest and he’s 14th.
He WILL pick it up this second half. I’m not worried, yet, about Greg not winning the ROY. He’s been improving a lot every game and at the rate he’s going, i’d expect a double double almost every game after the all star.

he should be
He should probably be ahead of Thompson, and right there with Gasol, Chalmers, and Rudy.
His biggest problem in regards to lists like this is that he started the year in the list’s top 3, then after his injury and slow inconsistent start got booted all the way out of the top 20. He’s climbing back up now, but there’s a lot of guys to leapfrog on the way up. McMenamin doesn’t want to get burned again by Oden, so he’ll be slow in pushing him back up towards the top. As an earlier poster said too, the list seems to be using a blend of actual performance vs.expectations. Guys like Thompson are “surprises” and thus end up ranked higher than their performance likely warrants, while Greg is in completely the opposite situation. In essence, his numbers have to be BETTER than another guy’s are just to earn the same spot in the list.
No worries though, at the rate he’s improving both his performance and consistency, he’ll be well into the top 10 by the en of the year. He’s got a very very good chance at the all-rookie team.

I disagree about Gasol
For the simple reason that Gasol would not be starting on this team over Przybilla. When you are the only big on a crap team its easy to get respectable rookie numbers.

Sadly, I doubt he will average a double double this year
He’d have to average 12.8 rebounds and 11.1 points to get to a 10-10 average.
by Cablinasian on Jan 29, 2009 3:25 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
He could do that pretty handily
But he probably won’t, because he won’t get enough touches. Unfortunately some of our players who shall remain nameless, would rather force up jump shots in traffic or fall away 3 pointers than get the ball to the big fella inside…crazy.

11.1 points seems pretty doable
the 12.8 rebounds would be much tougher I think

He's top 9
According to the people who selected the rookie team.
I think he’ll average 14-12 for the second half of the season and be considered a killer by the end.

Not enough minutes per game
Once he can consistently play more minutes by staying out of foul trouble (which is looking a lot better lately), he will get more recognition and more confidence. I hope that he can help break the national view that their is only one NBA team on the west coast.
Brandon has been in the top ten PER all year, a clutch performer down the stretch, and has the highest scoring game this season. Yet even after making the all-star team, the media hardly says a word about him. Hopefully the rise of Oden can help break this bias towards our team.
That wasn’t exactly on topic. I apologize.
