Afternoon Poll--Landmark Edition
Ben's exciting announcement about the FreeDarko book event (hosted by Blazersedge) at Powell's got me thinking...
Powell's is such a Portland landmark. Even though I don't live in the area I still remember many such landmarks fondly. So what is the definitive Portland symbol to you?
If we didn't hit yours, share it in the comments below.

well, in my opinion,
the definitive Portland landmark is the skyline with all the bridges in view. But on that list, I’d have to go with the Convention Center because it’s the most recognizable.
I agree with DrivetheLane
Convention center from the list, but I would have to say the Made in Oregon sign near the burnside bridge
Made in Oregon.... mos def
Who doesn’t know this?

Powell's is the first and last thing I tell people to visit when in Portland
but also:
Tiniest Park in the World. I invariably get a call from friends when they are out there, saying “You’re right – Powell’s is amazing. Why did I walk down to the river to see the tiniest park in the world?” I think it is hilarious. The other thing they don’t think is funny because it is so delicious are the concentration of food carts at 10th and Alder. That is remarkable
Everyone also seems to remember the bridges, the incredible acreage devoted to tatoos, and bicycle mania.

ooh... many things come to mind...
the Fremont Bridge… Mt. Hood… the skyline… that Franz bread spinning loaf… this…

Freemont Bridge
Love that one. Even though I live in the subarbs south of Portland, I always loop around over the Freemont Bridge to get some perspective…

LOL
A couple of friends of mine and I nearly got crushed by the old Paramount sign when the crane removing it tipped over. Definitely something that sticks in your mind.
hmmm
Powells if you’re local I think is a pretty big one, but not all people appreciate books.
Convention center is new.
Omsi moved and is new.
Rose garden is out of sight.
Portlandia is definitely notable, but…
I need to go with the new addition.
I think of Powells more than the other items, so that’s the one I identify with, but recognizable… gotta be made in oregon.

Skyscraper
downtown. What is it…Wells Fargo now? Or is it still there? Don’t tell me it’s been torn down!

do you mean the KOIN building?
I think that has a green top though. But the building looks a little pink I guess, with the sunlight on it.

That one. I always wondered what that building was. That is a pretty cool building.

the U.S. Bancorp Tower is it's name.
on the 31st or 32nd or 30th floor is the Portland City Grill. They’ve got a decent happy hour with a view to kill.

It is Forest Park. 100 of miles of running trails in the middle of the city is fantastic.
convention center
even if other people have no idea which city it’s from, people in the NW do. Any “stumptown” coffee sign is a dead giveaway too.

WHAT!!!
Portland leads the nation in Breweries and Strip Clubs and you have neither on the list? I’ll go with Bridgeport, then the Rudolph sign.
What we need, then,
a brewpub which a) brews awesome beer, b) is an architectural landmark, visible from a descending airliner, and c) has nekkid ladies.
by EngineerScotty on Jan 26, 2009 2:42 PM PST up reply actions
It would be like the Space Needle
Picture: A 500-foot-tall beer bottle, with a spinning restaurant in the neck, and an observation deck in the bottlecap. Lots of retail space in the lower levels, including a brewery, and the aformentioned “observation deck” of a different sort.
The only question is where to put it.
by EngineerScotty on Jan 26, 2009 2:51 PM PST up reply actions
space needle... i like it
We just need a plan to steal it from seattle. they lost the sonics, they probably wouldn’t mind losing a land mark either… right?
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
Nope - Safeco Field (and the Mariners with it)
On the theory that having been tramatized once by losing the Sonics, it won’t hurt as bad losing another team.
hakkaa päälle !
Come on.
PGE Park is a nice park, and the Beavers would probably flatten the Mariners anyway.
by EngineerScotty on Jan 26, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions
Steal the Stratosphere from Las Vegas instead.
It’s twice the height of the Space Needle and has cool rides at the top.
That's gotta be the best idea ever.
You’re an engineer, you should start designing it, I’m sure the city will buy off on it.
sweet
but i don’t drink, so I can do without the beer… and I don’t pay ladies to dance for me when I can get them for free… hmmm… how about a cool land mark!
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
Maybe ask the McMenniman brothers to put in a titty bar at Edgefield.
I think that meets all of your criteria.

you can see the KOIN tower from anywhere.
I would also add the park blocks.

Hood
Not pdx, and the people who live elsewhere will probably hate us (more) for appropriating it, but there’s no doubt to me that Hood is the iconic image of the city. I really think it promotes well being when you can see it. That sounds new-agey, but after a dozen cloudy days or so, it really is a mood boost for me to see it on the skyline again. And when the alpenglow of sunset bathes it…oh, mama!
In town, it’s probably the White Stag sign (which is what it used to say before Made in Oregon, or U of O).
I went to Parkdale Elementary
And Wy’East so I’m sure we had some of the same tenured teachers, and prejudice from HRVMS people in HS. Go Upper Valley! Parkdale! Odell! Pine Grove in the House!

And...
What about the Schonz! :) Or Tonya harding’s lead pipe! Bud Clark in a trenchcoat!
And now joining them soon apparently, the men’s room at City Hall!
tonya harding
boy, there was a mess. Went to rocking rodeo (friend dragged me, which ironically proved to be the ending of the friendship… or maybe ironic is the worng word. I hate country) and saw tonya dancing all oveer a BIG muscular black man with another girl. Was rather interesting.

For those of us of a certain age
It’s the Ladybug Theater at the Portland Zoo (it’ll be the Washington Park / Oregon Zoo over my dead body).
But for simple imagery, it’s a tossup between:
a) Mount Hood
b) The Made in Oregon sign
c) The Broadway Bridge
d) The First National Bank building (whatever it is called now…)
what... are you calling me old???
I think i remember something about that ladybug theater.

I voted "other", because I think of the bridges
I grew up in Gresham, so going to Portland meant crossing the bridges.
When one of my college friends visited Portland for the first time, he was most impressed with the bridges, and bought postcards showing them to bring back to his home in Connecticut. He is a mechanical engineer, so I’m sure that affected his opinion.

Any of the neighborhoods ,,,
… Hawthorne, Belmont, Sellwood, Northwest, Johns Landing, St Johns, etc.
Waterfront Park
Saturday Market
Portland Farmer’s Market
McMennaman’s (just about any of them).
Any of the other micro’s (including ones like NorthWest and Star’s that are no longer around).
About two dozen other’s I can’t think of at the moment.
Portland is far and away the most liveable city I’ve ever resided in. A big reason I’ve stayed in the NW over 20 years now.

first place i ever drank alcohol
had a margarita there when i was 14. carwreck (not me driving) later on. my head went through the windshield. (does not seem right to then say: “good times” but it didnt hurt that much.)
but i went there many other times, late at night. i well remember the milieu.

Dunno if its considered part of Rose Garden
But the Japanese Garden is amazing. The people here in Sacto that I talk to who have visited Portland all agree that is the best place to spend the afternoon.
However it could just be a weird Sacto-Portland Visitor thing.

My grandparents lived on Mt. Sylvania for 30 years.
They lived there years before PCC was built. When I was a kid and stayed with them on weekends, Grandma and I would hike to the top of the mountain for exercise and the view of Hood, St. Helens, and Jefferson. Now you can drive up there but the only thing you can see is the water tower.
Personally, it's a combo of Powell's, Mt Hood, and the Bridges
I voted other, with Mt Hood in mind…
I grew up in Tualatin, and have lived in LO, SW Portland, Beaverton, and now St. John’s… and no matter where I go, whether down my childhood streets in Tualatin or across the St John’s Bridge, Hood is always there… no matter where you go in the area… I would say like the panopticon in a way, but that’s creepy.
Oh, and living in St Johns has given me so much appreciation for the st johns bridge particularly… it is really beautiful.
But yeah, whenever I talk to anyone who visits portland, the thing they usually remember is Mt hood, especially if they fly in, as you often fly right over it onthe way in to PDX, and visitors always point out the mountain and, if it is a clear day, st helens (greg even mentioned something about the “volcano” when he first got here, didn’t he?)
Definitely, by far, Mt hood is the landmark.
