I voted for the Travis one
I really think that Travis is a great guy …not a dummy…but totally see the mistakes he makes as hurting the team more than the brilliance (at moments) helps. If I see him drive from an open jumper into a triple team fall away (and I will) …I think I will pull my hair out (and I am at an age where that isn’t advisable). He just doesn’t know how to make his (and by extension, the team’s ) life easier. And he really doesn’t get how to play the team game.
Larry (the new Johnnie Cochran) Miller: "If we get screwed, we're gonna sue"
Rudy is God
I had to vote this. I fell in love with the guy in 2004 and at the time never even dreamed he’d be a Blazer. Drafting him and seeing him dominate in the 2008 Olympics just made me happy as can be!
In reality, it’s probably the Outlaw one or the offense one. This year he has shown he can be a decent journeyman off the bench, but nothing more. Sad times.
My quick rundown.
-Oden is not a bust.
-Outlaw is having an underwhelming season. (Not quite bad.)
-Rudy is God!
-I’m surprised offense got zero votes. Our defense fails, but our offense wins games. Yes rebounding has improved, but isn’t offensive rebounding part of the offense?
-Nate makes some coaching errors, but not “all kinds” of them
-We don’t NEED to stand pat. We probably could, but we could also make a trade.
but he offered to share all his money
from his insane contract, farm subsidy revenue, and his six figure stunt man job for the new superman movie.
- Rookie fe[a]st 2009 -
Really?
Where can I sign up to be officially designated sharee? I would gladly take his enormous financial burden that is causing such guilt off of his hands. It’s a tough job but I’m willing to make that sacrifice for Raef as a fan, and as a man who wants to reach out to a community member in need…Raef still lives in Portland right? Actually, even if he is just a fellow citizen of this great country when times are hard like this we all need to come together or, more specifically Raef’s bank account and my legal ownership of it and the money it contains need to come together.
He's Coming! Oden Slayer of Giants
Great poll, tough choice.
I chose that I disagree with all of them.
I considered the Travis one. The problem is that I don’t think he’s having a bad season, he’s actually pretty normal this year.
I’m a little frustrated at the extreme approach taken to the Nate one, since I don’t remember anyone (!) stating that Nate makes “all kinds of blunders”, except in parody posts. A more realistic “truism” about Nate’s deficiencies (he’s never shown signs of being a successful defensive coach, for example) would not have scored a 1. Nothing personal Dave.
Really, none of them are true.
These truisms are truly truthy
and that’s the truth.

I picked the offense one....
Too many missed FTs (Blake and Roy) cost at least 2 games (others games could be figured into this, raising the total).
Too much B. Roy isolation; other teams didn’t know what to do early on, now we aren’t sure either.
No consistent 3rd option. When Aldridge and Roy are off, it’s good ole JV vs. Varsity out there.
Too many turnovers on the offensive end b/c of boneheaded mistakes by our PGs. Yes, I’ll call out both Sergio and Bayless here – but Sergio sticks out, despite his last game where he looked good (hopefully he’ll repeat this performance at least once more this season).
Too many “hexagonal” shots from Travis Outlaw. Yes some go in, others don’t. His selection of spots on the floor is very poor and costs the team.
Poor offensive flow at times forces Nate to call timeout:
Too much hesitancy – “should I shoot or pass? Oh, we only have 3 seconds on the shot clock…”
So you shouldn't have chosen that, from my understanding
the question was, which of these truisms is true, in your opinion.
Therefore, by picking that option, you have said that you think the Blazer offense has led to our resurgence.
by Cablinasian on Jan 23, 2009 11:35 AM PST up reply actions
Weird sentence
“The offense is the key to the Blazer’s resurgence.”
If you consider this year as a “resurgence” then this looks at the offense as having a positive year.
If you consider this year as mediocre and the Blazer need a “resurgence” then this looks at the offense as being the problem for our mediocrity.
We both took this sentence as “our offense is doing great this year, hence our winning.” I think hotstuff took it as “our offense needs to get better for us to start winning.”
ooopss!!
I read dave’s post and then commented here… sorry

Umm, did I miss something?
Those FT fiascos are what we like to call flukes. FT shooting is NOT a real weakness in this offense minus Oden for the time being.
B Roy iso late game works just fine when he’s not hurt. Plus, almost every team does this late game with their star.
Sergio has 4 turnovers in 105 minutes as a starter.
Bayless has 4 turnovers in 89 minutes since Blake went down.
204/8 = 1 turnover every 25.5 minutes = Amazing protection of the ball since Blake went down.
Outlaw… yes he takes too many hexagonal shots.
All teams have poor offensive flow “at times.” All teams also have to take timeouts because of poor offensive flow.
True, hesitancy is an issue at times.
FT - Outlaw always misses free throws in the first half...
He seems to lack focus at the beginning of games and routinely brick-irons the backboard – we rank 15th.
We’re stagnant on offense – a lot. Look at Houston – they have little isolation and move the ball around like a great college team – they’re fun to watch on offense.

The Outlaw equation
Outlaw hits 50% of his first FTs and 90% of his second FTs
On and ones he rotates Make, Make, Miss, Make, Miss, Make, Make, Make, Miss, Make.
Watch and you shall see!
So much Travis hate out there!
Are you people sure you’re not angry with Bo Outlaw? Maybe this is all a big misunderstanding.
I can't figure it out
Most of his “errors” are made under the duress of having to shoot with time running out on the clock or with three people on him and no other choices available. The notion that he’s a bad defender is particularly egregious. He plays a couple of positions pretty well. I think he brings a lot to the team that no one else does. If he were traded we’d really, really miss him, unless we get someone back who is better than him at these things. Like, if he gets traded for Gerald Wallace, that makes sense from a player-for-player standpoint. The reason that deal won’t be made, however, is that Wallace makes 9 million dollars a year, and Travis makes about half that. – Elgin

Travis: 11.5 pts, 3.9 rb, 0.8 blk off the bench.
This is true:
Most of his "errors" are made under the duress of having to shoot with time running out on the clock or with three people on him and no other choices available.
Travis is doing the job, playing two positions, playing defense, providing offense off the bench. He was leading the league in 3pt% earlier in the year. He hits clutch shots. He’s the second-closest thing to unstoppable on this team. What exactly do you want from your 6th man?
(To answer my own question, play a little less 1-on-1. But seriously, the guy deserves a lot of love he isn’t getting.)
The only one that I think is possibly true, is the standing pat.
Blazers need to improve on defense. Offense we’re decent in (and I include offensive rebounding with that), but defense needs a world of work. The blazers games I’ve seen, we’ve not ONCE been able to get stops we need. Blazers need to learn how to get stops and how to do it ALL the time when it’s needed.
Trades: we don’t need to stand pat. If a good offer comes along, a little tweaking could be nice.
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
woops
forgot about the travis one.
I’m going to go with that one. I know he’s playing SF instead of PF (where he plays better) but his season is still not that great and his being lost is still bad. BAD I tell you.
So, if I could vote again, travis gets my vote.
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
Please!!
Leave the line-up alone. Oden, LMA, Broy, Blake, Martell, Batum, Bayless, Outlaw, Pryz, Rudy, and Sergio are all keepers for now. Let this “core” group age like a fine wine.
This core group
needs a vet
They also need consolidation.
I’m not rooting for a change, but if the right deal comes along, the move is made with no hesitation. This summer I DEFINITELY think a move should be made.
James Jones made a huge difference when he joined us. Another player with winning experience and high BBIQ, I would imagine, could do the same. Blake is awesome, but not core. Not three years down the road.
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
In a word: DEFENSE
PG defense is the single biggest problem on our team.
by upper left corner on Jan 23, 2009 7:14 PM PST up reply actions
Dual accounting isn't okay.
Use either ratbastird or upper left corner, not both please.
As for the single biggest problem. I’d go with rotation for EVERYONE, not just the PGs.
Veteran experience happens to be one thing ..
… that you can count on to come with time. In otherwords, if it is coming to us naturally, there shouldn’t be any pressure to short cut the process by trying to force a trade.
I’m not against a trade per se. I just happen to doubt there is much in the way of available players out there that would dramatically improve this team. At least not at an acceptable cost.
hakkaa päälle !
consolidation is not needed
unless there is some kind of a locker-room problem – and from everything we’ve heard from all the up-close witnesses, they are all thick as thieves.
Consolidation is a pipe dream for fantasy hoops players. Consolidation is a wish from Trade Machine manipulators. Consolidation solves problems that the Blazers don’t seem to have at the moment. Maybe these problems develop later and then the Blazers will have to react to them. Right now, not so much. – Elgin

I voted "falsisms"
change “real” to “future” in number 3 (the PG comment) and I would have picked that
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield
- Early stage Marlo at this point, but Bayless is the emotionless killer new to the game. He will take over, and there will be causalties – it’s just a matter of time.
The offense will continue to evolve and improve naturally as players gain experience, but
defense has to be a focus and is a key to future success.
I have faith
that Rudy can be godlike. He ain’t Him. Not yet. – Elgin

I went with the one of point guard on the bench.
Sergio isn’t our real point guard. It’s either Bayless, Blake, or Roy, all of whom are on the bench or playing two guard right now.
"What's that, some kind of hamburger?"
--Bo Outlaw on being asked how he felt about recording his first triple double.
Aggression
I think a truism needed to be added here:
“The Blazers don’t commit enough technical/flagrant fouls”
They’re a fan favorite and can really rile up your team when it’s a grind out game.
Life is hilarious.
trade deadline
Not too many rumors floating around. It seems that even if we wanted to trade there are not that many possibilities that makes sense for both the blazers and their (potential) trading partner…
So my guess is we will stand pat simply because it is not clear what we really need yet. A lot will depend on how Bayless turns out and how strong Webster comes back…
I disagreed with all of them
but I don’t really agree with the “stand pat” one, but since I’m kind of on the fence on that one, I figured it was OK to check the “disagree with all” choice. – Elgin

I messed up in the voting
because I am an idiot and voted for Oden is a bust. Of course, I don’t believe that at all and what I meant to vote for was Dave’s rating on it, not that Oden is actually a bust.
I just get so sick and tired of people hating on Greg for no reason. And I do for the same reason that all of you guys do too but mostly because it is JUST NOT HELPFUL. People’s patience is seemingly nonexistent. I stand by that Greg will be at least 20, 10, and 2.5 for his career. Let’s just give it a little time.
Aghhhhh
I’m out of town and up in Tacoma till sunday working!! Had to Gamecast the Cleveland and was thinking the Washington game was tonight!
Have to work early tmrw, gonna be a boring night.. tonight!!!
http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/1/20/729080/midseason-stat-geek-update
it shows that our offense is working well and our defense is what is lagging behind. it’s the increased offensive proficiency that has lead to to the better record, because it certainly isn’t the defense. get that defensive rating up, and then we’re really gonna be a contender.
