Anyone think we can hold LeBron under 40 tonight?

Without Z and West, if we can hold LeBron in check, we could actually take this thing.

by as11osu on Jan 20, 2009 11:59 PM PST reply actions

That's definitely the trick, isn't it?

First we need to hold him on the perimeter, and hope he misses shots. If Batum, Outlaw, LMA and whomever else can’t hold him, then he’s gotta contend with Oden.

One problem though. When Oden played against AI a few weeks ago, he just needed to breathe on AI, and the refs were whistling. Imagine how much slack they’ll cut Oden when guarding the chosen one.

Perimeter defense is definitely a key to this game.

>there were a lot of hard fouls on LeBron in the L*ker game that went uncalled. I won’t be surprised to see some compensatory pro-King officiating tomorrow.

That's the thing few realize....

LeBron doesn’t get alot of calls because of his size. It seems officials give defenders some benefit of the doubt when a 6-8, 260 freight train is coming through the lane. In alot of ways they are probably correct to do so…

That's the Shaq problem too

Shaq was so big and strong, that he could basically and-1 for any foul. Therefore, everyone had to foul him hard to stop him. Then he complained because he was getting beat up, and that ticky tack fouls weren’t getting called anymore.

Hey, you gotta take the good with the bad, Shaq.

Anyone, with LBJ, you’ll have a hard time getting anyone to listen that he’s actually getting too few calls. It’s a superstar league, and the select few get a big advantage. It’s just how it is, and I think most fans accept that.

We watched LBJ take 4 steps on his way to a layup to win against us last year (I’m not even going to list what LBJ would call the move). I think he’d sacrifice that foul he thought he deserved, to get the layup that he traveled on.

If those two double team LeBron,

and the other four Blazers match up against the rest of the Cavs, we should be in good shape. We’ll be taking technicals for 6 men on the court, but I think we’ve already shown that that is a good strategy. – Elgin

I think it is possible, but it will require doubles maybe triples

Lets see we put LMA, BRoy and Batum on LeBron and use the twin towers as goalies – what do you think?

Would be interesting to watch huh?

Hopefully he can get back on track with a breakout game. I have to imagine he’ll take Lebron’s presence as a challenge to step it up after a few bad games.

Let’s start with free throws. Baby steps.

i only

want to see roy score 40 when the rest of our team is struggling. roy scoring a ton isn’t a priority for me since it seems like when he has huge scoring games, its bc the rest of the team is playing poorly and he has to pick up the extra slack.

They have the #1 defense in the league.

When they really want to take out Brandon, they just have to put LeBron on him. Last year Roy struggled with James’ size, especially late. Roy probably won’t be getting clean looks inside, he’s going to need to kick out to the right guys at the right times.

by as11osu on Jan 21, 2009 12:21 AM PST up reply actions

They won't want LeBron on him the whole game

That will wear him out.

Roy needs to be aggressive anytime Lebron isn’t on him. Whoever LeBron is guarding needs to be moving constantly without the ball.

I know you can put admiration in bags, because admiration is real, and tominhawaii says that everything that is real is measurable.

by jscot on Jan 21, 2009 1:00 AM PST up reply actions

that's the problem

Batum is probably our most credible defender to throw against LeBron, but whenever he’s in the game, James will have the luxury of having about a quarter of an eyeball on him and the other 7/8ths devoted to patrolling the passing lanes and pinching down for monster weak-side help blocks. I think we’re gonna see a lot of Travis tonight, and probably some Ike too.

Where's Ime Udoka when Portland needs him?

Yet, rhetorical question aside, Nicolas Batum definitely isn’t bulky enough to effectively guard LeBron James in man-to-man situations. At any rate, though, It’ll be a very tough matchup for whoever gets the assignment on James.

by AK1984 on Jan 21, 2009 5:17 PM PST up reply actions

LeBron is a Karl Malone

who moves like Chris Paul.

No one can guard him effectively… there are only a few players in the league of the same body type/athleticism. Gerald Wallace comes to mind.

by Cablinasian on Jan 21, 2009 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

Roy has been a terrific defender in crunch time situations

Against Joe Johnson, ‘Melo Anthony… and I think he could do a decent job on LeBron. But you’re right, his offense would seriously suffer.

Are you kidding me?

Batum is easily our best wing defender. The only other player who might have more success guarding Lebron is Roy; and that would wear him out.

Batum can hit the open three well enough to keep LBJ from sagging too much.

this is as good a chance to beat the Cavs as we could hope to have

They are in a mini-slide and are missing 2 key players. We’re missing 2 starters also, so I guess that’s more or less a wash.

Anyway, I’d give us about a 40% chance to win this one

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Jan 21, 2009 1:10 AM PST up reply actions

that's about right

and that ain’t that bad.

lately when outlaw has a good game, it’s been very good — by which i mean it includes some offensive rebounds and putbacks and getting to the line, blocked shots out of nowhere, and aldridge has been shooting over 50% in january, plus hitting the boards more… and rudy-floor game has been very nice, not all of which shows up in statistics… so if oden doesnt get in early foul trouble, and roy comes back a bit, well — we’re a formidable team, even if our defense isnt all there yet, we just have a lot of weapons, a lot of unpredictable players who at any time might go off.

ilgauskas being out is a big loss for them, as he can score and hes mentally very steady, at 7’3" even if he can’t jump much he always hits the boards, he’s a bit like blake in how professional he is… but he’s not playing against us.

sergio and bayless arre playing better than i expected, they’re stepping up, either one might have a good game… bayless is more the threat to explode and really alter the flow but sergio when he’s confident really gets others involved going to the hoop.

40% chance to win means, to spell it out, we would beat them 4 out of 10. that’s with all our rookies and inexperience. that’s really pretty decent odds.

ignacio

by ignacio on Jan 21, 2009 1:38 AM PST up reply actions

Significantly overrates them

Ilgauskas hasn’t played since the first of the year. They are 11-8 on the road, but since he went out, their road results look like this:

Lost to Washington 77-80. Z out.
Won at Memphis 102-87. Z and Wallace out.
Lost at Chicago 93-102. Z and Wallace out, West only 11 minutes.
Lost at LA 88-105. Z and West out, Wallace only 20 minutes.

Even with our injuries, we’re a significantly better home team than Washington and Chicago.

These guys were really tough on the road when healthy (10-5 before Ilgauskas got hurt), but they are very beatable right now, even if Wallace is back up to speed. I rate it as about a 75% chance.

It would be about 20% in Cleveland, probably.

Off-setting injuries tend to favor the home team — your backups and role players tend to come up with the big games at home more frequently than on the road. And I really like our matchups down low.

I know you can put admiration in bags, because admiration is real, and tominhawaii says that everything that is real is measurable.

by jscot on Jan 21, 2009 2:14 AM PST up reply actions

I worry about them because of LeBron and their three-point shooting

we are not good at stopping penetrators, and LeBron penetrates like few others. A drive and kick to an open Williams or Gibson or Pavlovic could mean a long night if they get hot (think: Philly game). Also, I worry a bit about Varejao and Wallace. Our rotations, and our backfilling behind rotators, is so poor that they could make hay cleaning up the offensive boards.

I’m also worried about Andy Varejao flop flop flopping Greg into 5 fouls in 4 minutes.

Am I a bad person for wishing a minor injury on LeBron during the Laker game? Very minor, just enough to miss one game

by northwestj on Jan 21, 2009 9:01 AM PST up reply actions

if he shoots under 45% and average from behind the 3 point line and dosen't get to the line very much i don't care how many points he gets

30 points on 40 shot attempts and less than 6 assists would be great. I’m worried about Mo getting his groove from outside, we have a lower FG % (45) average, than our oppents FG% (46) average, weaksauce. I’m afraid they will work us inside out, lebron kicking out to a wide open Mo with no defender on him, i can already see it, NOOOOO!!!

I don't know if I would compare

I haven’t seen Roy destroy a teams best defender and all of his friends that are all doing everything to just stop him.. I recall that Roy hasn’t been nearly as clutch when they throw enough people at him.. Lebron has this funny way of getting to the hole that appears unstoppable more often than not

by idoltime on Jan 21, 2009 9:08 AM PST up reply actions

It's because Lebron is like a bowling ball when going down the lane lol.............

All I meant it as is that we have a guy we can go to when the game is close also

and he is great

but yes.. Lebron is a bowling ball.. I think Roy has definitely developed into a guy who can certainly come up big in clutch situations..

but Lebron at the end of games is scary because you realize how difficult it is to stop him from driving right through a packed lane to the hoop..

Nic is going to get squashed. Brandon is the next best defense, maybe Brandon and Batum?

Brandon must have a good night. LaMarcus must have a good night. And preferably Rudy AND Travis show out off the bench . We need everyone on point in order to get a win. Much like the Boston game, turnovers need to be super low, energy super high and defense must be superb.

I am so over Lebron by the way. He’s a great basketball player but for some reason he gets on my nerves. I dont hate him like I hate Kobe but he’s def. annoying.

If he’s going to learn how to swim in NBA waters its just as well he get thrown in the deep pool… He’ll do fine, besides nobody can really stop the guy anyways, its going to have to be a total team effort (the scary part)

Brandon shouldnt guard LBJ early or he might get into foul trouble. This is Nic’s chance to shine. He starts because of defense and hustle and LBJ can be guarded. Nic needs to move his feet, keep his hands off James, and focus on not letting James penetrate. Godspeed young frenchman….

I'm predicting overtime

I see us up by 2 with 8 seconds left. Lebron thinks about a three but then decides to go for a 2. He drives gets slammed by Oden (his sixth) and then makes both free throws.

Pryz comes in for OT and dominates with fresh legs, and working well with Bayless and Rudy. (Roy’s Hammie/Shoulder is too worn out to be much presence at this point. esp after a full game of being run over by lebron.)

Blazers by 4, 117-113

You expect to lose some games to the good teams. The C’s, Fakers, and Cavs. The wins are nice, but really shouldn’t be seen as MUST wins.

2. I’M GONNA BE AT THE GAME!!!

This will be my first in-person game since the Roy-Johnson duel at the end of the Atlanta game last season. It was a very nice Christmas present. :) It’ll be my first time seeing LeBron in person as well.

WIth Big Z out, this will be another opportunity for Mr. Oden to go to work and do his whole “ME BIG!!!! ME DUNK ON YOU!!!!” routine. Gotta work inside out on this team. I’d also like to see Aldridge work the post here as well, as Cleveland has no one who can shut down LMA one on one if he gets good position.

I also hope we see more of Bayless with Roy, and I’d love to see B-Rex get the start, but I don’t expect it.

Here’s to Shav getting 6 and 4 tonight in garbage time. ;)

I just hope the whole team watched the Cavs-L@kers game

They have to make Lebron a jumpshooter for the scoreboard’s sake and for the sake of Greg Oden. Greg could give us a huge boost. The Cavs don’t have a post threat with Big Z out, so if Oden can stay out of foul trouble via Lebron, he should be able to put a good game together.

"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"

by Magnum on Jan 21, 2009 11:04 AM PST reply actions

I agree with keeping Lebron away from the rim

…but can we keep him away from the line? Doubtful. He’s going to be aggressive right off the bat so I think it comes down to limiting Lebron’s playtime by having him pick up some charges. Brandon is great at stepping in and taking a charge at the last second so if the calls go his way, we might be able to limit Lebron’s play time. More likely, we’ll be conceding 15 plus attempts from the line to James tonight, but if we can keep him from finishing at the rim and keep him shooting outside, that might not be too big of an issue. Also, if I were Oden I’d be very wary of trying to slap at the ball when James is driving as the refs will lean toward calling that a foul when it’s the King in question, and picking up his standard 1st quarter 2 fouls would be devastating.

by SabonisBonus on Jan 21, 2009 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

Lebron will get his points

it’s a given. Broy needs to come out aggressive, driving the ball to the rim as only he can do. He must make Lebron and the Cav’s work at defending him. He needs to score consistently and or get to the line. This isn’t a night that he can lay back and feed whoever he feels is “hot”. This is his night to shine. If Broy scores big points we have a shot at winning. Coach needs to make sure the ball is in his hand’s the majority of the time.

by toolman on Jan 21, 2009 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, Roy needs to be aggressive and try to match Lebron's scoring

TRY

but, if our shooters aren’t hitting, well….all the Brandon Roy in the world isn’t going to help. They’ll just pack the lane and watch us throw up bricks and compete with the shot clock. Gotta hit those open shots to keep the Cavs honest.

He’s our Lebron. He’s that good. Yes, your correct, other Blazers need to bring it also. But, this game is really about Brandon vs. Lebron.

by toolman on Jan 21, 2009 12:39 PM PST up reply actions

I really hope we don't give him 15 attempts

he normally gets 9 or 10. If he has 15 attempts I guarantee that Oden is in foul trouble. Oden needs to move his feet and not lower his arms an inch. This would be a game where it is just fine to let a few go. I mean it’s Lebron, he probably will convert the layup even if you do foul him.

There are people with better records than you though. Anyone who got the “Oden Package” has seen Portland go 5-0 so far this year. Tonight is the 6th game for us so hopefully we can keep it going.

Oden package wins include a pair of 1 point victories, 32 and 42 point victories, and a normal 10ish point win.

Oden package?

Was that real ticket combination or just the game where Oden has played well?

Yeah 11 game packages

You could get Oden/Roy/Aldridge/Weekend packages. (They got uncreative with the last one.)

We went with Oden because it didn’t have a preseason game like Roy/Aldridge did. So far, Oden hasn’t had a great game at any of his package’s games. He’s some some decent ones, but hopefully tonight he goes off!

Oddly enough, Oden package was going to have his first home game as a Blazer, but he got hurt and missed it as we all remember. As it turned out, his first game back (at home) happened to be the 2nd game on the package, so we got to see his first home game like we were supposed too!

Free Coaching Tips to Nate: How to handle the pick and roll trap

When Roy gets doubled off the high pick and roll. Send LMA to the free throw line to receive the pass. Have the screener(Oden) roll to the hoop for a 2 on 1 opportunity.

I think cleveland is a team we can dominate

The blazers play to their competition lets be serious. And we tend to play well against teams with unbalanced talent IE one star player, and there is no bigger star than Lebron. There is also no other star with such a weak supporting cast. if we play good Portland D and contain (not stop this impossible) Lebron then i think we win by at least 8.

my two cents

Me too.

Because when the game starts, it will mean that I’m not at work and that I have beer in my mouth and a smile on my face… unless of course LeBron blows us up. Your boy Batum better show up on D tonight.

Gotta Run

Nic needs to get out and run…
I think the Cavs will try to rest LeBron by playing him on Nic defensively, let him come from off the ball for steals and blocks.
If Nic can get out on the break a few times, L will have to play him…

Gameplan

If the Cavs but LBJ on Batum, just let the kid run from baseline to baseline the entire game!

by Zaig on Jan 21, 2009 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

Don't you think James will guard Roy?

People know we like to run a whole lot of our O through Roy and with James being a solid defender (what, didn’t you read the paper?) I think that the Cavs put LeBron on Brandon.

Have fun everyone

And if you’re going to the game, cheer, okay? It helps.

I gotta go to a meeting in Arcadia, which is like 20 miles away or so, which means it will take me 2.5 hrs to get there. So, off I run.

I hope we win, because I am a homer. AND I WILL NOT REPENT.

We’ll need to be on our game to win this game, and hope Lebron doesn’t get hot from 3— because if he hits his jumper, he is unstoppable. Luckily for us, his jumper stinks, except for the last minute of last year’s home game against them. But enough of that memory.

GO BLAZERS. Got the headband and the t-shirt and the game shorts on underneath normal pants, so if we lose it isn’t my fault. What are YOU doing for your Blazers to help them win?!

Take care everyone, I am DVRing.

Do you guys remember

that LeBron’s second career game was in Portland? We had Damon guard him the whole game… from what I remember he did a very good job.

Brandon Bass is a free agent.

Smells like a KP deal. Pick up the guy for 4-5 million a year, backup PF is taken care of.

by Cablinasian on Jan 21, 2009 5:25 PM PST reply actions

He isn't to the level of Millsap.

Probably isn’t even a full MLE guy.

We could do a sign and trade with them if it proved too difficult. Apparently some people around the league really like Ike Diogu.

TRADE URGENCY

I pose this to you all. Does anyone think we can bring anyone of significantly better talent then what we already have? I’m talking reality over theory here. Trust me i’m always thinking of ways to improve this team but by doing that right now actually subtract from the chemestry we all so value. I would have loved to have gotten chauncey when he was available but that ship has passed. Who would be worth the risk that is so valuable?

by hayeclan on Jan 21, 2009 5:53 PM PST reply actions

Hinrich is a big upgrade over Blake on defense.

He’s one of the few guys. Butler, Hinrich, Wallace… None of them are easy to get though.

by Cablinasian on Jan 21, 2009 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

yes on defense...but

overall hes not that much better to warrant giving up too much for him. had miles salary not come back on our books…things would be a bit different.

Hinrich

Agreed but by doing that do we stunt Bayless?

by hayeclan on Jan 21, 2009 5:55 PM PST reply actions

I guess my real question is what’s more needed? A proven vet or just more experience for the kiddies?

by hayeclan on Jan 21, 2009 5:57 PM PST reply actions

See, if you replace Blake with Hinrich

then you are able to have a veteran at the controls and continue to develop the young talent.
