Darius Is Back Sunday
Just wanted to point out that Mr. Miles is officially able to play again on Sunday. As this clearly has financial implications for the Blazers, it will be interesting to see what, if any, role he'll be playing with Memphis. Also, if he plays his 10+ games, does this create greater incentive for KP to make a move with RLEC?

Definitely
I think that you have to move RLEC, because the cap space will not be nearly as favorable. The Mikes have disagreed with me on this before, which they didn’t explain very well. I just don’t understand, if you have the D. Miles cap space and let RL’s contract expire, then you have a ton of cap space. If D. Miles comes back on the books, then the best option would be to trade the contract, right?

You actually have to find something worth acquiring
You don’t just move RLEC to move RLEC.
We’ll still have a lot of cap space even if Darius does come back on the books. Not enough to sign a max player, but a lot.

Well
you still have to find a player who will be a free agent this summer if you let RLEC expire. You don’t just let the contract expire to expire.

I don't think he's eligible on January 4th
According to the boxscores on http://www.nba.com/grizzlies/schedule/, he’s only definitely been on the active roster for 5 games (12/14, 12/16, 12/19, 12/22 and 12/23). He might have been on the active roster on both 12/27 and 12/29 – both games only have 11 players listed. But that’s a maximum of 7 games so far for his suspension.
On 12/26, the Grizzlies carried Marko Jaric instead of Darius on the active roster and on 12/30 they carried Steve Francis instead of Darius.
Assuming the information in these boxscores is true, the earliest that Darius could be available would be January 7th against the Nets. And now that the Grizzlies are carrying Steve Francis, it could be even longer than that. We’ll just have to see – it may be that the team is realizing that he’s not ready to actually contribute (total speculation on my part but possible). Also, January 7th is a key date – if he’s on the roster on that date, his salary is guaranteed fully for the remainder of the year, so if Memphis wants to get away with not paying him, they’ll have to cut him before then.
the thing of it is
that he does not have to be on the active roster for the last 5 games. I had a link somewhere but it has avoided me.
He can sit out the last 5 games of the suspension on the inactive list unfortunately.
Also I thought it was the 10th when contracts are guaranteed and that would leave 3 games for the griz to make a determination:
vs. min
@ NJ
@ Tor
at least it could be worse where they get blown out and then throw him in. These games should be close and hopefully he will not get any PT.
This may kind of suck as his 10th game is the 27th, about a week after the time we can trade RLEC with his cash savings.

It is the 10th
I have something important happening on the 7th, so for some reason that stuck in my mind when I was writing earlier. But yes, contracts are guaranteed on the 10th of January for the rest of the season.
I stand duly corrected. Thanks!
Oddly, he only has to be on the active roster for five games of the ten games to serve his suspension
Small technicality that was stated by a GM when Memphis signed him (not sure it was Wallace, might have been Dunleavy from the Clippers). Even the wisest salary experts – and I consider you one – can learn something new about the many rules of the NBA/CBA every day ;-)
Found it, it was Dunleavy
