Rudy in the Slam Dunk Contest
Just got home. Playing a little catch up here. Here's the official release from the team on Rudy's slam dunk contest nomination.
FANS SELECT PORTLAND'S RUDY FERNANDEZ TO
COMPETE IN 2009 SPRITE SLAM DUNK
- Fernandez Becomes the First International Player to Participate in the Competition -
-More than 2 million videos viewed online and 500,000 votes received by fans through NBA.com -
NEW YORK, Jan 19, 2009 - Portland Trail Blazer rookie Rudy Fernandez, a native of Spain, will become the first international player to participate in the Sprite Slam Dunk competition to be held during NBA All-Star Saturday Night Feb. 14, at US Airways Center (8 p.m. ET on TNT) in Phoenix, the NBA announced today. Fernandez was selected as the fourth and final participant exclusively through an online vote on NBA.com, marking the first time fans have had a say in choosing a competitor for the Dunk contest.
More than 500,000 total votes were cast on NBA.com/dunk to determine one of this year's dunkers as part of Sprite's "They Dunk. You Decide" campaign. Fernandez received 251,868 votes, beating out fellow rookies Russell Westbrook (147,279) of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Joe Alexander (114,963) of the Milwaukee Bucks. Fernandez, who is among rookie leaders in scoring, assists, steals, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage, will compete against the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard, the reigning Sprite Slam Dunk champion, the Memphis Grizzlies' Rudy Gay, who participated in last year's contest, and the New York Knicks' Nate Robinson, winner of the 2006 contest in Houston.
Beginning today and running through the 2009 Sprite Slam Dunk contest on Feb. 14, the four participants will appear in a new series of videos previewing what they have in store for the competition and urging fans to vote for them during the contest. The videos will be available for fans to watch on various sites including NBA.com/dunk, YouTube, Facebook, and Yahoo! Sports. A series of videos featuring the three rookies eligible for the fourth participant vote garnered more than 2 million views across the same online sites over the course of the three week campaign.
For the second straight year, fans will have the final say in deciding the winner of the competition. Following the concluding round of dunks, fans will be able to cast their votes by sending an SMS TXT message to 38657 ("DUNKS) or by voting at NBA.com. The dunker with the most fan votes will be named the winner of the 2009 Sprite Slam Dunk.
The two dunkers with the highest first round scores will advance to the final round. The dunker with the lowest total score from the first round will compete first in the final round. Dunks then will alternate until each player has completed two. Time limit rules still apply. In the final round, fan voting polls will open via SMS TXT message and at NBA.com. The combined results from SMS TXT voting and NBA.com will determine the champion.
The Sprite Slam Dunk is part of NBA All-Star 2009, which also includes the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam; Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout; PlayStation® Skills Challenge; Haier Shooting Stars; NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas; and the 58th NBA All-Star Game.
Given Rudy's heartthrob status he should definitely break out some Valentine's day inspired dunks to sway the judges.
This will be some nice visibility for the team. Given his personality, I bet Rudy comes up with something good.

(I hope he doesn’t get a cold like Brandon did at the all star game last year. Seriously, it seems like he should borrow Greg’s hand sanitizer.)

Lets hope
Rudy comes up with a cool alley oop. Seems like he really gets some Air when he gets full sprint from half court, and runs up the baseline.

I really hope that
he does a good job. He doesn’t have the vertical leap that Gay, Howard, and Robinson all have… He’s in the 31/32 inch range for his leap. Good, but not dunk contest level.
He seems like a good showman. I bet he gets a few good gimmicks in.
I say we bring in a live bull
for rudy, he can do a bull fighter with the red flag charade, and end it by dunking off the bull’s back.

I say
He pulls off his Blazer jersey to dawn a Spanish National jersey just as Oden comes walking out wearing a Superman costume allowing Rudy to re-create the facial from the Olympics?
then next time we face d-how
he goes for 40/25.
and im not sure we want to add more Oden facials after that Gerald Wallace oop facial

Way To GO RUDY
Hope Joe Alexander doesn’t take out not being selected on the TB tonight.

I seem to remember that a lot of us
were hoping that Jumpin’ Joe could be yelling from OUR bench. :)

I liked him.
He may turn out to be okay. Still can’t believe he went that high in the draft.

Rudy is not a dunker
He doesn’t have the hops to compete. The only thing Rudy does well is finish alley-ops. I hope he doesn’t embarrass himself too badly.
Joe Alexander should be in it. He got mad hops.
Rudy got up there on that oop
in the pre season Sac game. That was nasty.

That pre season game vs Sactown
Provided more highlight plays than any other I have ever seen.

Good for Rudy!
It good exposure for him and the team.
everyone relax, he wont embarrass himself.
He’ll have a great time and put on a great show. we know
he’s not the front runner so just enjoy it.
Im glad for Rudy
I bet the NBA does a power point presentation with the globe and highlights Spain and then as it rotates into the western hemisphere they can highlight Oregon on it too…

im surprised rudy got voted in
and im going to be really interested in what he brings, he is the first international to be selected for the slam dunk comp!
i think his vertical is enough for the dunk comp, hopefully he can bring some ideas from left field, and show some creativity
I'm not surprised, as international voters have showed their veracity in past voting opportunities.
And, I agree his vertical seems more than enough to make him a competitor. His dunks are almost always with two hands; that takes some hops.
I heart taxes.
2 handed dunks are great
If you’re, like, a 6 foot dude not in the NBA. For a NBA slam dunk contest, being able to do it with two hands is way below the bare minimum of hoppage required.
Rudy can dunk, and he’s pretty athletic, but if he doesn’t pull out the gimmicks and showmanship, he’ll never win on dunks alone like Howard or Nate Robinson would. He just flat out can’t jump as high, or as powerful, or as athletically, as any dunk contest competitor I can remember. His vertical is on the low end for NBA guards.
I’m glad he made it because that is awesome, but I hope he isn’t gonna just make it up as he goes. He can’t do that. He needs gimmicks out the kooloo!

Hops don't win these things, but flair does...
especially with the fan vote.
and i’m sure Rudy can bring something sexy to the table.
Congratulations Rudy!
This is great exposure for him just to be there.
He can't be any worse than Nate Robinson's last dunk contest
I'm a Blazers fan and If you ban me from your blog, I'll sue you!
Please don't feed the trolls.
God forgives, tominhawaii doesn't.
Rudy is a stud!
Rudy is great to watch, and even if your not a Blazers fan I think people still enjoy to watch him knowing his story and where he is from and what he has accomplished…. However I must say he has some serious competition for this contest, but the best luck for our boy Rudy
