Adrian Wojnarowski: Jail Blazers made a comeback this season
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgns<!-- m -->
"The bully-boy bluff ends now because the Portland Trail Blazers always were without the guts to file a lawsuit over Darius Miles. Their threatening email had been a desperate final act of a franchise awash in arrogance. Blazers officials hoped the threat of Paul Allen’s riches could scare the NBA. Mostly, it made everyone laugh.
Edit: Edited by Dave because there was WAY too much of the article quoted here. You can only reproduce a key sentence or two and must refer to the link after that. Also it's not good form to call potentially offensive names after you've quoted somebody...or really anytime at Blazersedge. I'm leaving this up because a conversation is already rolling and I don't want to delete those comments.

The sad thing is
I couldn’t even defend the Blazers to Woja-whatever, his unprofessionally personal tone aside. Using the Jail Blazers slur is a low of him, jerk.

He shouldn't have used the Jailblazer moniker
iif he wanted to use a clever nickname for his piece, Trialblazers would have been much witter and factually accurate.
Ha Ha
This is Karma for all the Blazers fan’s who went all over the internet screaming pritch-slapped after the last couple of drafts. Heck, even Ben compared Pritchard to a bank robber. When Pritchard’s own fans compare him to a thief, then obviously the guy has some character flaws.

Don’t you remember this: Anatomy of a Pritchslap and this: Anatomy of a Pritchslap — Part 2?
Blazers fans are so eager to proclaim that Pritchard intentionally mislead his peers and pulled a fast one on them, that obviously fans of other teams and the media are eager to kick Pritchard while he’s down. This situation is similar to how happy non-Lakers fans were when Kobe was accused of rape. Two hugely different situations but the desire to see someone who has had a lot of success take some heat is pretty common these days.

I thought you were referring to this
“Last night, we were chatting about KP and I decided that the best way to describe KP is as a brazen bank robber who doesn’t wear a disguise, doesn’t use a weapon, and walks in during the middle of the afternoon. After he has cleaned the place out, his first phone call is to the bank’s owner and he immediately begins pitching his services as a security consultant so this type of thing doesn’t happen again. Instead of calling the police, the bank’s owner is pursuaded to meet KP for lunch and is so impressed that he lets KP keep the money and hires him as a consultant. He then leaves the restaurant, realizes what just happened, and calls the other bank owners in town to complain.”

Pritchard didn't screw over Geoff Petrie
I fail to see how much better the KIngs would be with Jerryd Bayless as opposed to having Jason Thompson.

The Blazers screwed up a few things, but that's a horrible column. For our reputation, and for missing several key facts
Like, how did the Blazers leak the info of the suspension? The league announced that almost a month before pre-season, so Boston and every other team knew about it. Is there proof of that? I only read about it in his columns.
Colin Cowherd, John Canzano, meet a guy who is even more opinionated and unfortunately has an even lower opinion of this franchise, and now wants to make a name for himself from this scoop.
Had to take the Miles thing as far as possible
He had the big scoop on the pre-season games counting. He has become addicted to his power trip and wanted to take it all the way. Not a nice thing to do
Not to be overly dramatic, but....
If the Blazers should sue anyone, it should be this author.
The Blazers may or may not have leaked things out about Darius, but this guy better have some hard evidence before he proclaims it as fact. This is as close to slander as you can get.
People want to say Portland was in the wrong here. I give KP a lot of credit for taking the one course of action that gives us even a remote chance of washing our hands of Darius and his contract. It wasn’t KP that declared Darius medically retired…It was a league appointed and NBA Players Association approved doctor who did. I also believe, it was Mr. Darius Miles himself who signed off on it, knowing exactly what he was doing.
Can I buy you a fish sandwich?
talk about dramatic
He wanted to be the star in the good times in Portland, wanted all the bouquets and bows for his work on the job. He started to believe his own clippings, his own mythology, and he thought he could get away with anything.
From the start, Pritchard stumbled into the one rabid NBA market where a general manager can aspire to celebrity. Portland declared Pritchard the Golden Boy, the Gambler, and played songs about him on the radio. Never once did he seem embarrassed. Never did he do much but furiously feed the rush to declare him a genius.
Anyone that doesn’t laugh at this is either taking this “writer” too seriously or agrees with him. I mean this is a rant. A published hateraid laced rant taking aim at Kevin Pritchard. No factual basis or sources cited at all. Just a rant.

I wonder if Woj would be happier had KP decided to send Darius home to St. Louis with pay (possible, see Jamaal Tinsley, Stephon Marbury) and let him sit there until he might have been able to trade him a year from now. Maybe KP would wish he had, too. Is that more morally acceptable to prevent a player from playing this way?
Perhaps
but the morality issues can be argued against each party.

I just sent Adrian this
Hi Adrian,
I have a question for you, and some comments concerning the Darius Miles situation with Portland and Memphis.
It’s been widely understood now that under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, it is necessary for a league approved/Players Association approved doctor to declare a player as medically unfit to play in order to be considered eligible for medical retirement. On the other hand, why is there nothing in place as far as league approved doctors declaring players medically fit for reinstatement? That seems to be a critical point that nobody seems to be talking about. With so much negativity being thrown around over how the Blazer’s handled Miles’ medical retirement, it still seems that they followed the procedure they were supposed to. Regardless of the intentions the Celtics, Clippers, and Grizzles have to signing D. Miles, it seems like working a player out against the suggestion of doctors is a dangerous precident to set. A league appproved doctor deemed Darius Miles unfit to play, and Darius Miles himself signed off on it. What safeguards are in place to prevent a team from bringing a player out of medical retirement, and allowing him to put himself at risk for further injury? It is an honest question that I haven’t heard many people talk about. Perhaps you could address it in a future column. I’ll even let you take credit for it. :)
On to my comment…I won’t hide the fact that I am a Blazer fan, so I’ll try my hardest not to speak with Rose City colored lenses. I am a frequent reader of your articles, and I think your latest article on the “Revived Jail Blazer Era” was really unfair. Whether your judgements about the Portland front office are correct or not, you are basically doing the same thing to Kevin Pritchard that you are accusing him and the Blazer management of doing to Darius Miles, and I’m really surprised at what you wrote.
Pritchard is definitely a type A personality, but he is very approachable, and generous with his time. He always seems to have time for the fans, and is pretty gracious. You mentioned in your article about other GM’s getting “Pritchslapped” around. What you fail to mention is that it was some blogger fans that came up with that term, and Pritchard has openly denounced the use of that term. Yet, you allow that to permate in your article, and basically paint it as if Pritchard is full of himself. Will you do the right thing and detract that from your article and take ownership for it? I don’t request this because I’m trying to be a smart@$$, but you’ve basically compared Kevin Pritchard to the pot-Smoking, referee threatening, marijuana in tin-foil through the metal detector, blacked-out while flipping the bird, dog fighting, yellow hummer driving, baby-sitter rapist players this poor fanbase had to endure for about 6 years. I think it was tasteless for you to do.
Have the Blazers ever openly said that Darius Miles is incapable of contributing on a basketball court again? I don’t believe they have. What the Blazers have said, is something you quoted in your own article. Kevin Pritchard definitely said a risk exists that Darius Miles might do further damage to his knee if he continues playing competitive basketball, and that is not an unreasonable point. It’s disappointing that you seem to assume the worst here, and it seems like you have blurred the line on this one. Forgive me if I’m wrong.
Time will be the judge as to what the Blazers have been up to. You have some good points and insight, but you know how I feel, and I think you’ve offended a lot of fans because of some careless writing.
Thanks for your time.

ya i sent him a message too it went something like this
So you think this whole miles situation is pritchard’s fault? You might as well say that he paid off the doctors that said miles was unfit to play. You blame him for this mess and say that he has pawned this off on others. Are you doing any research? all of his statements sense this all arose say that it was a team decision and that he stands behind it. Not to mention that this isn’t his fault. He didn’t sign miles(it was the people before him and Paul Allen was infatuated with him) he wasn’t the doctor that found him unfit to play. Most of this is probably Allen’s fault anyways. He doesn’t want to have egg on his face by having to pay this contract that he was so insistent on making. How is trying to claim him off waivers a bad thing? It’s a smart business move, if the Spurs did this you would be praising their creative savvy. The E-Mail was a bad decision(there is no arguing that) but you have already said that this article is just beating a dead horse/your sad attempt to try and stay relevant because you were finally able to beat the ESPN people to a story and you want to savor it as long as you can. Lastly, don’t try to paint Miles as the victim. He did too many bad things as a Blazer for their front office to think that he would be worth while to have around. He may be a better person now but he was never a mature/good person in Portland.
not quite as eloquent as silkybrown but the message is the same. Do some research if you are going to make statements like that.

Unfortunately I have to agree
His style of writing about this entire situation has been inflammatory and heavily attacking. I’m guessing KP peed in his corn flakes or something.
But good for him, I know his name now. I know to skip all his articles, since I don’t know who else he may dislike and specifically write about.
By the way
I couldn’t find another way to contact you, I saw your response to my post on the Darius Miles situation in another thread. Oh hey!
No worries on disagreeing on the whole thing. I was just in a mood that morning anyway. You got caught in the line of fire.
I’ve pretty much bowed out of the whole Darius thing after that. It’s not that anything has really changed… I just found that nobody is changing anyone else’s preconceived notions. At that point, it’s not worth it, you’re just arguing to argue, you know?
Anyway, it’s cool we disagree. Sorry about going out of the way to call you out (and get your name caught up in other threads, which wasn’t my intent btw!). No need to do any more rounds on it though. Everyone’s pretty set in their ways now.
*shrug* - a little overwrought
but I don’t disagree with the central premise. We really did botch this, both in the sense of protecting our best interests as well as in the sense of being a responsible and ethical employer. I’m not mad at KP, but I do think it sounds like there was a prevalent feeling around the gms of the league that he needed to take it down a notch, maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world.
Adrian’s column is a pretty good one, by the way. I don’t read it everyday but pretty often.

It's completely ridiculous
how much of this article is conjecture and supposition. Somebody should sue this guy for libel unless he can produce some facts.
this is the stuff that makes me mad:
He wanted to be the star in the good times in Portland, wanted all the bouquets and bows for his work on the job. He started to believe his own clippings, his own mythology, and he thought he could get away with anything.
Great insight into what Pritchard wanted, what he believed, what was going on inside his head and his heart. You must’ve had an exclusive Barbara Walters-style interview with him. Wait, you didn’t? You don’t even like the guy? So… this is all just conjecture? Isn’t that called…slander?
He never has been afraid to rub that advantage into the faces of his peers.
dates and times? facts? wait, you don’t have any? Just rumors? Too bad…
Pritchard’s dubious intentions came tumbling out of him….His conscience, huh? Those were words directed at the rest of the league, trying to tell every other team that Miles was too far gone for them to consider bringing back. He must have believed people were stupid. All around the NBA, it made everyone think: Pritchard sounds scared that Miles isn’t done at all. Why else would he be trying so hard to convince everyone otherwise?
What was it Joe Biden said? You can question a guy’s judgement, but never question his intentions?
rom there, it went underground.
in other words, OUT OF THE PRESS. So how do you know about it? Wait, you don’t? Wait, this is all conjecture and rumor? Wait, a guy told you a scout heard another GM said that Pritch said what? And you believed him?
Once you try to make yourself the star in the good times, you’re asking for trouble when they go bad.
Dates and times? Quotes, maybe? Evidence that Pritchard tried to make himself anything other than a good GM?

Woah
Does this guy even know who the “Jail Blazers” were? It’s not like captain planet, something that comes and goes. Everything he wrote about it completely illogical, irrelevant and blown out of proportion.
This guy is seriously all over the place and just does not make any clear points.
Pritchard has mismanaged the Miles situation from the beginning. Once the league doctor agreed that Miles’ knee injury was a career-ender, Pritchard’s dubious intentions came tumbling out of him.
His conscience, huh? Those were words directed at the rest of the league, trying to tell every other team that Miles was too far gone for them to consider bringing back. He must have believed people were stupid. All around the NBA, it made everyone think: Pritchard sounds scared that Miles isn’t done at all. Why else would he be trying so hard to convince everyone otherwise?

You know what upsets me...
Is that these writers continue to blame our current Blazer management for having signed Darius Miles and that it was their our mistake for giving him such a lucrative contract.
Which is completely wrong! This was the OLD management of Steve Patterson and John Nash for totally screwing us over with giving him and Z-Bo huge freaking contracts. It is our current management is trying to clean up the mess that they’ve created. And it’s unfair of these writers to continually blame KP for the wrong doings of our previous crappy management.
When two Doctors tell you its not a good idea...
Maybe you should listen. Its like driving a car on tires that are bald. Yes you can still drive on them but its only a matter of time till you’re going to have a blow-out. Darius might be able to play decent for the moment, but what he is doing is probably damaging his future health and well-being. Yes he finally might have realized that he actually likes playing Basketball, but at what price?

Adrian Wojasomething is a hackity HACK!
I stopped reading any of his columns about a year ago when he wrote an article that so enraged me that forced me to write an email responding to his article for the first time ever in my life.
I’m not even bothering reading his drivel. Of all the misinformed, ignorant, and clueless NBA writers out there, Adrian is the absolute worst. I loathe his tone, speculation, and editorials that are nothing but the poor man’s Canzano. I hate his smug picture too.
I’m going to write his full name, Adrian Wojnarowski. This way when someone actually spells his name correctly into google, they will see this page. Wojnarowski, you are a poor excuse for a NBA writer and I would take Stephen A Smith over you. Cheese doodles have greater value to me than anything you could possibly offer.
Adrian Wojnarowski is the worst NBA beat writer alive. Finally using some of that SEO I learned to good use.
PS. This comment was not brought on by this article, I didn’t even bother to read it. He wrote a rather pathetic speculative piece a while back that I still fume about today. So much so, I forgot what it was about.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
He also has a history of acting personally
I don’t condone the e-threat, but couldn’t he acted less childish than lets meet out back in the parking lot. The guy takes things too personally. I expect it out of bloggers, but not paid writers with the national media. He’s probably been scorned by Blazers front office and now he’s trying to get his shots in. Karma is going to bite him.

Terrible Article
What a terrible read. Not often do I read an article and by the end of it are fuming.
I have read most of Adrian’s stuff with regard to Darius and never does he go into the process of the Blazers releasing MIles after the doctors report. There is a small blurb in this article but he basically believes the Blazers have done wrong by Darius from day 1.
Look I don’t agree with the email that was sent out but to a degree I admire what they are trying to do for me as a fan.
Poor form from a journalist in my opinion, basically just brush over any facts and make out the Blazers to be devils revisited.
.
Aw A.W. you sound angry and jealous....
Listen, I don’t care if someone, anyone wants to take specifics about The now infamous E-mail, specific quotes from individuals and specific acts in regards to “The Darius Miles Situation” and form an opinion. I’ll listen to any and all opinions. My opinion is when we finally get this whole thing in the rear view mirror of history a lot of the things Adrian Wojnarowski pointed out about The Blazers inept handling of the entire situation will be deemed true. I’m a Blazer fan, and I don’t like the way our management has handled the whole situation. BUT stick with me here, that’s only about 1/4 of the article, the rest is a tirade and attack of Kevin Pritchard.
I have to wonder why. Yes, some of what Wojnarowski said is true. Kevin Pritchard is perceived to be the mastermind behind the draft that brought us Brandon and LMA. Yes because we have Paul Allen as owner The Blazers often do have more resources available than many other franchises. We buy first round draft picks. We don’t force others to sell. In the past few years under Kevin Pritchard this franchise has made huge leaps forward both on the court and from a tangible character aspect. Kevin Pritchard is a good communicator, he has gone on chats, appeared in interviews and made Blazers fans in general feel good about The Team and the direction the team is heading in. So what exactly is wrong with all that? Local Media and fans have embraced Kevin Pritchard, and maybe he does have a higher profile than many GM’s but again so what? Whats wrong with that? The Blazers have improved dramatically from where we were not that long ago, if Kevin Pritchard has appeared confident about that, and maybe even a little bit proud of where we are as a franchise again So What? I’m NOT behind the scenes but I pay pretty close attention to the information that is available to the public and while Kevin Pritchard has been willing to communicate to the public as The Blazer GM he’s never struck me as being arrogant. Confident, maybe a little proud but the mouthpiece of a franchise awash in arrogance as Wojnarowski would like to say, No I don’t see or hear that.
Again if you want to take specifics about Darius Miles and the situation and form an opinon fine, I have no problem. But when it de-evolves into a rant about a specific person making mostly unfounded accusations of arrogance then it just sounds childish. I’m sorry if it bothers Wojnarowski and some of the rest of the league that The Blazers have a very wealthy owner who’s not afraid to spend to better the team. I’m sorry if it bothers some GM’s that maybe KP has a better staff at his disposal and more resources than most of them. I’m sorry if it has bothered some across the league as The Blazers have made some great and some good draft day decisions. If we as fans have enjoyed it, and KP as GM has also, well as Steve Martin would of said, EXCUUUUSEEE MEEEEE!
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
You really think it's all KP's fault
and not Paul Allen???
Who signed Darius and fell in love with him? Paul Allen.
Who is pissed off about losing $18 million and has the lawyers to threaten litigation? Paul Allen.
Adrian Who’syournazi makes it sound like this entire thing is KP’s fault.
And you think it will be proved to be true in the end?

Bust a Bucket?
Is this a reply to my post? How did you get the idea that I’m saying I think “its” all KP’s fault? My post is a response to Wojnarowski’s article not an assesment of blame.

Hmmm...
Am I sure I really wanted to make that comment twice ? Sorry for the double publishing, don’t know how I managed THAT…
Thank you Adrian for helping us mend fences with the Celtics
