NOW do you see how good we could be if we added Crash?
Gotta give the bobcats credit for sucking a little bit less than the blazers out there tonight. Make no mistake about it, thats a bad team. However, their PG doesn't suck that bad and neither does their small forward. I've raved about Gerald Wallace ever since there was the smallest rumor that KP was looking at him. I don't want to repeat old arguments here because I think if you were able to make it through that stink-fest tonight (I didn't. I turned off the tv as soon as it went to overtime because a) the blazer's play actually made my stomach and back hurt from stress and b) there was no way they were gonna pull this one out. you could just see it in their eyes tonight), you saw enough of him to see what he can and can't do.
okay, I can't help it, I'll make it quick. he can't shoot a lick from the outside but it doesn't matter. he gets to the hoop at will. whenever he wants. he hits (enough) freethrows. he plays defense. he runs the court. he's consistent. thats it. he's worth all of our small forwards AND RLEC if they want him. I'll even take that loser bobcats fan the tv kept panning to with the gold chain, headband, and arm sleeve if thats what it takes to get Crash on this team. I'm sure that guy puts on a boston jersey whenever he's not at a bobcats game.
So yeah, get Gerald Wallace please. His contracts not even that bad so please don't complain about that. he's worth all 3 of our small forwards combined so...I dunno, add all their pay checks together and compare the two. This isn't a very well laid out post, I'm just ranting at this point. While I'm here, is it my cappy TV or did it sound like the game was being broadcast from china. underwater. that was the quietest nba arean I think I've ever heard. there were some cheerleaders, some towel boys, and gold chain wearing super-douche in the front row. thats about it.

He's been one of my favorites for a while.
My theory is that the Blazers can’t get him or they already would have.

I don't know
if I had to watch him chew on that mouthguard for 82+ games a year, I might die. No really, I might.
Reminds me of when I was a kid and whenever the Blazers played the Lakers

I know that this is going against the grain
but I am not convinced.
How does he fit into the offense? Very little 3pt threat.
Is he a bench player? That’s the only way I see it working.
If you can explain, I can change my mind. But I don’t see him as the answer.
I imagine the offense would have to be redesigned a bit
not terrible in of itself
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
personally
I’d prefer to have a 3 (or an offense that doesn’t restrict the abilities of our 3) who didn’t just camp out in the corner to “stretch the defense” and instead actually crashed the boards. Someone who can handle the ball well enough to not just run the floor on a fast break but also initiate and LEAD the fast break. He’s a solid defender right now, not still developing. I just don’t see another team being able to get a rebound in going against a frontcourt of wallace, LA and GO. Plus, he’s another slasher. Right now we have Broy and (it looks like) Bayless. Thats about it. The guy can FINISH. ask Greg.
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

here is my pitch
I think that we should ditch our current offense and run a dribble-drive motion offense ala U of Memphis.
http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/offense/memphis-dribble-drive-motion-offense.html
Wallace would fit well as we have players that can all drive and pass check it out.
Imagine Bayless attacking off the dribble and either getting to the rim or passing out to Travis/Wallace for them to drive past their guys . If those 2 options do not work, then you can have Roy go 3rd and have him get into the lane and allow Oden and LMA to get involved as well. Add to the fact that Oden and even Frye can shoot from outside it makes them perfect for the system. They would both have to work a bit on their dribble penetration, but I would imagine they could.
The only thing would be that Oden would not be as an offensive threat as he could be if we forced it to him down low, but we didnt get Oden thinking that he would be dropping 40+ pts a night, but rather a Russell 15/15/5 type of player with great D.
This would allow Oden to simply O rebound and be there for dump offs on the drive.
I just think that as good a shooter and slashers we have in Rudy, Roy, Travis and Bayless and good shooting PFs it would be a good mix. Add in Wallace and he would be perfect for a dribble drive motion offense.
With the way our Cs rebound and their limited O skills other than putbacks and dish off dunks, it would allow them to do what they do best, O rebound and save their energy for D. I think I may expand on this in a fanpost soon.

I like it.
Has Nate ever run any thing like this.
I’m kind of curious. Did Nate run the same offense in Seattle, or is he running this offense because Roy, LMA and Oden are the teams focus?
by parkinglotj on Jan 17, 2009 10:40 PM PST up reply actions
I don't think so and I don't see Nate Changing the offense
My understanding is that the reason the offense relies so much on jump shooting is so the team can ge back on defense as opposed to having our back court out of position. If I remember correctly this is the same offense they ran in Seattle when Nate played. They got the ball down low to Kemp and then when the double team came they would kick the ball around for a open three like we do.
I am by no means an expert on the old Sonics so if I am wrong someone tell me so and I’ll shut up.

Nate did not have Kemp in Seattle
He had Radmonivich as his PF and Jerome James, Robert Swift as his centers. They were a much more of a drive and dish offense.

Yeah,
But did you see Oden drive it from the baseline a couple nights ago. There were a few glimpses of the beast we know is in him. I think that beast is about ready to show a little more – if he can stay out of foul trouble.

Roy, Wallace, and Bayless would all be dynamite at getting to the rim. Any time one of them was driving they would have two shooters they could kick it out to on the wings. It definitely helps having Oden and Pryz getting offensive rebounds and tipping shots back up.

I just want to point out
I totally called it.
Our biggest offensive weakness is that we’re overreliant on jump shots. So maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a player who’s effective offensively doing something other than spotting up for open jumpers, hmm? Oh and hey, our biggest team weakness is defense, and GW is one of the top wings in the league. Hey, you think he might be able to help us?

Please, I watch every blazer game there is. I'm tuned in to every shred of news that comes out.
But although I didn’t watch overtime, let me just guess what I missed:
The blazers missed some free throws.
The bobcats got some layups.
we fouled them a lot.
we missed 3’s.
no one could stop gerald wallace.
we couldn’t guard the pick and roll.
They continued to out hustle/rebound us.
I honestly haven’t looked at any replays or realy in depth re caps. how accurate was this?

Try watching every game for 30 years . . .
and you will add:
Felton threw in a bank shot !
The refs granted Charlotte a time out when
it was a jump ball.
They left Okafor alone on rolls to the basket.
and . . .
the Blazers missed a lot of free throws !!!!
It's GO time !
soooo
what did I miss then?
I saw the bank shot and the no jump ball call. crap like that happens, it should have never been that close.

love Wallace
but combined with the health issues of Roy and Oden, Wallace’s injury history makes him a tough fit with Portland. I could easily see us becoming the Rockets with 3 great players all wearing suits come game time.
sooooo
trade Roy and Oden? I don’t understand, you want 2 great players wearing suits? Anyone can get injured (although I understand the higher liklihood of a certain player getting injured). I don’t really factor this in though.
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.
-Dave
he's not worth all three of our current SF
given potential and salary.. and injury risk, etc.
that being said.. and the fact that he plays like a train wreck.. I can’t disagree that his energy and play is exactly what we need on this team.. he’s not exactly a great on-the-ball defender in reality… but he is like a mix of Josh Smith (helpside killer!) and Nate Robinson (to the riiiiiiiiim!!) and would make the PERFECT complimentary SF to LMA IMO.. he would be worth getting.. but at what cost? Roy, LMA, and Oden should be untouchable unless we are discussing some ridiculously amazing superstar. Rudy, Batum, and Bayless seem like guys we should not be jumping to send off until we really know their talent ceiling. Blake and Przy seem like necessary role players that we can only lose if we have a reasonable and ready replacement for.
Not a lot left there, which I bet is exactly how trade talks between Blazers and Bobcats have gone..
I'd have to disagree with the "potential" value of 2 of our 3 SF
I’d bag on martell here but then I’d have a bunch of people jump down my throat because apparently once someone goes away for a while people forget about all their short comings (see: Jarrett Jack). Travis is what does Travis does at this point. Not gonna get any better. Nic could be something special…
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.
-Dave
your right
most of that potential is in Batum.. but Outlaw and Martel are still decent for their price.
Personally, I was willing to give Martel one more year (this year) to prove his potential so I may be giving him slightly more credit than he deserves. Though I am of the philosophy that you can always find a steady 3-pt shooter in the NBA with no other reliable skillset through a trade or a FA signing.
I've seen him play great man defense against all kinds of great players.
Of course he didn’t that much last night, since he didn’t need to do much against Batum, who he was matched with. He did some nice work on roy when he had him briefly.
And I’ve seen him guarding Bron, Caron, Pierce. Dude is a grown man on defense.

i'd take it
I’d even consider trading Frye for an order of fries straight up (just kidding.. they have to throw in a burger.. or even a fish sandwich or something.. maybe a milkshake.. )
Canzano should try looking closer at salaries.. Spurs would have to throw in another 1.8 mil or so to make this trade work..
I think Canzano is right. Frye would be a good addition to their big men, a jump shooter and rebounder, that’s why they added Croshere and Frye is better than Croshere.
I’d rather keep Frye than acquire Udoka though. Too many wings on the Blazers roster already, only interested in a trade that provides a clear upgrade.
http://nbaroundtable.wordpress.com/
Gerald Wallace would be the perfect addition to the team
Defensively he is exactly what we need. He is a physical wing players who is an above average perimeter defender and a good help defender. He solves our major weakness. We have no one on our roster capable of defending a physical wing player who can handle the ball. Finally we could slow down Maggette, LeBron, Iggy, Butler, Ron Artest and Paul Pierce. Batum is capable of defending quick players, but when a player can mow him down, Portland is hurting.
Offensively, Portland would no longer be a team that lives and dies by the 3P%. How difficult would it be to design an offense for three quick physical ball handlers (Bayless, Roy and Wallace) and a quick PF in Aldridge? We are already proficient in the half court (even with Batum in on offense) and we would thrive on the fast break.
If this deal is available to KP he should have pulled the trigger already
I don’t know what he’s waiting for. With the Miles situation as it is, RLEC is our best piece and its time to use it.
Boomshakalaka
Wallace is reportedly available...
but there are reasons that Charlotte fans have a love-hate relationship with him.
He reminds me a bit of Paul Pierce prior to the arrival of the Big 3—many of the comments made about Pierce are now made about Wallace. Ballhog. Second-tier star.
If he is available—he would be worth considering, definitely.
OTOH, look who Pierce’s wingmate is—an excellent off-the-ball gunner. Wallace would be a great guy to pair with Rudy. Would Wallace and Roy work? Maybe, maybe not. Certainly, Wallace, Roy, and Bayless would be an interesting combination—three guys who all need the ball to be effective. It’s OK to have two guys like that, especially if one is a skilled playmaker who will make the pass (a Nash, a Roy, a Rondo, a LeBron) if its better than his own shot—but three of them (or two who don’t like to pass—think Melo/AI) is asking for trouble.
If we get Wallace, then it says we’re committing to Blake (or an improved version, say Kirk Hinrich) at the point. Which would be a change of direction for the team—a postiive one, perhaps, but still a change.

I'd like Wallace coming off the bench myself
Start Webster to add 3 point shooting (more important if Bayless is starting), and bring Wallace off the bench for back-up 3 and 4 minutes. Crash can still get starter minutes and Webster can still get his too.
"Hightide was the only "Yes" vote" - parkinglotj
Joel Freeland=Stud
.... I don't think any of those things you just said are true at all.
And I’m not having like a difference of opinion, these are factually untrue.
There’s a bit of love-hate with coach brown (and even that’s a real overstatement – it’s more like there are hints that GW’s game might not be one that Larry wants to build around) but he’s a big favorite in charlotte otherwise. Everyone realizes he shouldn’t be the main building block for the team, but unfortunately he’s been the best player by far on that team.
Ballhog? What the… his usage rate is 19th for small forwards. His game if fundamentally off the ball. He shoots 12 times a game, and he peaked at 15 last year. He shoots less than LMA, who’s our second banana, and there is no first banana on that bobcats team.
He’s not a “second tier star” unless he’s appeared in some shoe commercials I’ve managed to miss – what he is is a fantastic glue guy/role player, like a very rich man’s Jerome Kersey. Outside of insane basketball fandom (i.e. us), I doubt anyone in america’s ever heard of the dude.
I know bobcats aren’t the most examined team in the league but seriously, I’m finding all of these “opinions” floating around here based more off reading Hollinger than watching the actual players incredibly annoying.

I am not anti-Wallace...
I just don’t think the Blazers can get him for more than they are willing to give up. Looking at it from the Bobcats perspective, why would you take anything less than LaMarcus in a deal invovling Wallace? Their stats are similar and Wallace has proven more over the long haul than LaMarcus.
I don’t make that trade, but I don’t see us getting him for a bunch of our bench players unless they are truly desperate to unload him.
Your desire to unload all of out SFs for him also seems like an overreaction. We would need to keep a jump shooter since he does not fill that role. I also value Travis as another fourth quarter/clutch scorer. Wallace did not do much after the 5 minute mark of the fourth quarter through overtime.
PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04
I want GW
As long as he cuts his hair, loses the headband, and puts his mouthguard back INSIDE his mouth. He plays D and gets to the rim, which we need more of.
