Whats up with Oden??

Great game tonight for Bayless and the Blazers!!! But once again another no show for Oden with a whooping 2 points and 1 rebound oh and 1 block. Lets not forget the blocked shot those have been pretty rare for him lately.I was checking out the stats of Oden and Brook Lopez the rookie center for the Nets out of Stanford. Lopez has started 32 games and has not been under 10 (rebounds+points+blocked shots) in a single game.In Odens 26 starts this year including tonights gem he has been under the 10 mark 9 TIMES, not good. Thats 9 games where he really did not even have to have suited up that night why bother your not going to try anyway. Every game he is given a chance to play as many minutes as he would like something that most rookies would die for. Get a couple of early fouls on him and hes done for the night moping on the end of the bench. Put him back in and 9 out of 10 times he does nothing, and than back to the bench just like tonight. Hey everybody has bad nights but at least you can get out there and play good D and rebound. Afterall I thought he was a great rebounder and defender, but have not seen much of that so far. Anyway enough of that heres to hoping Bayless gets his chance now and takes advantage GO BLAZERS!!!!!!!!

The per minutes stats are pretty similar, slight edge to Oden last I checked

(which was before this game).

Oden’s having a good rookie season, bordering on very good. If he was any other rookie center, we’d be excited. Today Nate didn’t play him enough IMO, but its not like he played great while he was in there. Greg’s inconsistent of course. He was great vs. GSW and Chi, not a factor in the last two games. The team should get him more touches, but its going to be like this for a while for Greg or any other young center.

Patience is a virtue

It can’t be stressed enough that GO is a 21 year old rookie with relatively limited NBA experience. There is no need to overreact. He is going to have his 15-15 games and he is going to have his stinkers. Dude is still so young and takes a while for big men to develop. The Lakers have jumped ship with Andrew Bynum who has more experience than Oden. One night Bynum will put up big numbers and the next he will be a non factor. Just relax and let Greg do his thing.

Lopez is the Nets only legit big man

Lopez isn’t coming off a huge surgery.

Besides, it was clear what was working against the Nets, a smaller lineup.

Really guys, it’s not that big of a deal. Give ALL the rookies more time before we sign off on their future.

Oden is more effiecient

And just about even or better in every category per minute. He barely played tonight and stuffed Lopez pretty hard. Small ball worked tonight…Oden is fine.

i thought oden did ok

he was good playing lopez 1 on 1, the only time i saw him really let lopez do anything was when lopez was stepping out for the foul line pop, which is kinda rare for a lot of NBA centers. i dont know why nate didnt give him more time, i thought he would have been good for 20 mins or so, hard to get into any kind of rhythm in 2 lots of 6 mins.

by Yawnie on Jan 15, 2009 11:15 PM PST reply actions

also another thing i noticed

blazers guards are terrible at giving the ball to the big guys on the roll to the hoop on the pick and roll, oden could have got a few easy buckets that i saw

Oden also has way more double doubles

as I recall. Lopez has put together a couple solid games, but I bet if you raised the bar higher than 10 (boards+blocks+points) Oden would look a little better in comparison. I mean, given that he was coming off of surgery and has one of the best centers this season on his tail, Oden is going to disappear more nights. Like tonight, he would have stayed in the game and no doubt ended up with a decent line if we didn’t have the option to go to Pryz because our pick and roll defense was awful.

This stuff is making me sick

The man is only 20yrs old, played only one year of college basketball and is coming of MAJOR knee surgery. Not only that he as played only 30 or so games of pro ball againts the best players in the world . Oden is fine, someday soon maybe this year or next he will make people eat crow, and the people complaining now will be the first to jump on the Oden bandwagon.

it takes a season to evaluate rookies, doesn't it?

Do we judge Bayless on tonight’s game or last night’s? Batum on only the L*ker game or some game where he is a ghost? Fernandez on the first 20 games of the season or the next ten? And Greg against Chicago, or GS or tonight?

It takes time. Look at it this way: we have four players on their rookie contracts, a couple of them late first rounders, who are active, valuable parts of the rotation. Including Oden. Off the top of my head, maybe the former Sonics, NJ, maybe Miami (any others?) have rookie contributors on par with what get from our four. Any other playoff contender? I think its remarkable.

GO is still shaking off the rust & learning how to play in the NBA

But likewise are his teammates learning how to play with Greg Oden. Practically every time GO picks & rolls to the hoop, he’s open. His teammates have just not learned to get him the ball in these situations—when he’d be most likely to do something good with it. If GO played with Chris Paul, he’d look like a world beater already.

If you have any experience at all watching this league, you should be able to see this. If not, you’ll still see it soon enough. But likely you won’t realize how much of the change is due to improvement in GO’s teammates’ play, not his. Basketball is a team game, you know.

+1

This is something more people need to realize.

The team is used to playing with Joel Pryzbilla and jumpshooting bigs. The entire team has to adjust to Oden as he does to playing in the NBA (and playing again at all).

It's getting

really frustrating for me to see the guards ignore Oden on the pick and roll. It’s not that they’re inept, I just think they don’t even think about it. Something tells me it’s not a play drawn up or even practiced. Well, even if it was practiced, there’s not much emphasis on it.

Greg has 4 more double doubles than Lopez in 7 less games

And Greg averages 8 less minutes a game.

Question: What's up with Oden?

Answer: Recovering from microfracture surgery and a year off.

I dislike these kinds of fanposts.

Here's how I view Oden.

I like him a lot. I realize he is not going to be Shaq, or David Robinson. Someday he will be a very good player, just not this year. I enjoy his good games, and realize he will have down games as well. That’s why it’s always good to have veterans on your team. Thank you Joel!

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

How can anyone realize anything?

No disrespect but he as not played enough for anyone to say what kind of player he is. I think he’s playing at 75% healthy right now . If we had a PG that could penatrate he would be averaging over 15pts a game

Great read from David Aldridge on Oden!

http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/01/15//dose.20090115/index.html

I just finished reading this and thought it sums it up quite well, I love the part about Parish!

Keep the faith Blazer fans, Greg is our guy! :-)

Jerryd Bayless is our FUTURE!! PLEASE DON"T TRADE HIM - TRUST IN KP!! Oh - and please Buy an RV from me and support Blazermania!!!!

yeah

When I read it and thought of my memories of Parish (admittedly somewhat limited), it seems to me that not only would that be a perfect fit for this roster, I can actually see see that being a pretty apt former player to compare Oden to.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

by douglast on Jan 16, 2009 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

Actually, it's not that good a comparison, I'd say

I grew up in the Bay Area, and I remember Parish’s early seasons well. First, he was more of a finesse center than GO—skinny, with a nice jumper. Second, every single time Robert Parish got the ball, he travelled. It was ridiculous!

Then the Warriors traded Parish to the Celtics, and every time he got the ball, he still travelled. Funny thing though: from the day Parish arrived in Boston, the referees stopped CALLING the travelling. Funny how that works!!

Which Oden would you rather have?

1. the one who cares sooo much about being great, who doesn’t want to let anyone down, who wants to work harder, play better, and be one of the greats in the league and if he isn’t he’s disappointed… or

2. one who doesn’t care he’s not playing as well as he would like, but is still fun to be around, happy go lucky, nice guys, who never really achieves his potential (I think we have enough of those in the league already).

That article just makes me think that YES Oden will be as great as we all want, because he will not be satisfied until he is!!!! Keep it up Oden, we’re all behind you!!!

...things go well I might be showing my O face...O...O...O...you know what I'm talking about.
