Very satisfying victory

The Oden issue is still pissing me off though.

I'm just confused

We need to get Oden involved in there, not sit him all the time

by seasnake333 on Jan 15, 2009 7:06 PM PST up reply actions

agreed

Let’s let him grow. He can’t do it sitting on the bench.

COMCAST SUCKS!!

by shamman on Jan 15, 2009 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

perhaps

he is made to sit until he learns to play hands off on the slashing guards when they clearly have him beat. His problem remains boneheaded fouls. Whether he fouls out or not, he needs to learn. Me thinks coach sarge might be sending a message there.

That's what I think too. Not too long ago there was a call to take the kid

gloves off of Oden. I think this is the start of that. He’s being told he needs to earn his minutes like every one else.

I think so, too

I know you can put admiration in bags, because admiration is real, and tominhawaii says that everything that is real is measurable.

GO needs an offseason to work on the stuff you

all are talking about. Hands, footwork, screens all come in off season drills that you work with a position coach on. Let’s remember he hasn’t had an off season yet His first year he was only out of college and we didn’t get time to work with him and then last year he was still recovering and the coaches didn’t want to work him too hard.

We’re not winning the championship this year (no mater how well BRex plays) let Nate use him in spot situations and let him get used to the NBA game before we go overboard on the bust talk.

...things go well I might be showing my O face...O...O...O...you know what I'm talking about.

by Matt Daddy on Jan 16, 2009 12:24 AM PST up reply actions

Bust?

This conversation wasn’t about him being a bust, but about how Nate uses him when he fouls.

I know you can put admiration in bags, because admiration is real, and tominhawaii says that everything that is real is measurable.

He does need to grow

but sometimes growing isn’t JUST on the court. Although, he can benefit a lot from a game. He needs to learn through practice. Right now, the practices are slim. I expect some quality practices during the All-star break.

I’ve also said that like some other growing centers in the NBA, he may need a Hall of Fame Center to help him develop his game like. Yao has/had Hakeem and Bynum has/had Kareem. Get David Robinson to help out Greg.

the Admiral

was not a low post (back to the basket) player on offense. He shot baseline jumpers

Maybe when Shaq retires he could coach Oden? Spend PA’s money and make it worth his while

Lopez was pulling him away from the hoop and making jumpers

They were gonna pick and roll him to death. I think Nate made the right call to go small ball.

I agree, you can't let the other team dictate our playing style.

I wish Oden the greatest success and I hope this team can figure out a way to get him the ball in the next game. Although, Okafor is going to be tough.

We did, and it worked

but I want teams to adjust to us, not vice versa. Oden is a big part of our evolving identity, let’s get that worked out so New Jersey’s wondering how to adapt, while we execute our game plan.

typo

The best teams FORCE other teams to adjust

by seasnake333 on Jan 15, 2009 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

Easier said than done.

The reason we are sometimes forced to adjust to other teams style of play is because we’re young and have some easily exploitable weaknesses. Notice, for example, how in his first couple games Oden was getting stripped here and there when he got the ball inside, then within a week, it was pretty much a guarantee it was going to hapen when he got the ball.

The great teams don’t need to adjust because they’re rock solid in what they’re doing. We’re a couple seasons from that and Oden is still working into his role in “our style of play.”

Blake's injury impact on Oden

I think this will be an underrated story. Nate needs to figure out how to get him involved. The PGs aren’t setting Oden up and Roy is doing his own thing off the pick and roll.

it appears to the untrained eye

that Roy doesn’t trust GO right now, which is why I believe he doesn’t look for him on the pick & roll, and in other situations.

This is the untold story right now I agree – Oden needs to improve, no doubt, but his teammates aren’t getting him the ball on the way to the hoop at all- and it’s often been there.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

by douglast on Jan 15, 2009 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

Greg sets terrible picks

Greg moves away before he even screens off the defender. Maybe that’s why Brandon can’t find him rolling to the lane.

by OneTrickPony on Jan 15, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions

Yep.

And his hands are too unreliable for a pick and roll type set up. He has trouble holding onto the ball when he’s posted. How can B Roy trust him moving through traffic?

Unfortunately most of the team’s picks are bad. Joel’s the closest we have to a good pick.

interestning conundrum

Blake and Bayless both play best with the starters. If Bayless becomes the full time backup PG, I truly believe Rudy and Outlaw will see their numbers drop a lot. However, its going to be awfully hard to keep Jerryd off the court.

Sweet Dunk..

I think Nate coached this game perfectly, and he should continue this as long as Blake is out. Start Sergio becasue he is better at running the offense, put Bayless in, and when he is in the game have Roy run the offense. Which ever one plays better have him finish the game. Tonight it was Bayless, and man he had a good game!

I take a Monta Ellis with better defense and point guard skills for this team

The Warriors will probably try to use the real one for the point position, which is more likely to fail.

I still consider Jerryd Bayless to be a mediocre defender, but I have high standards for defense.

Anyhow, I tend to believe that the Golden State Warriors will stick with Jamal Crawford at point guard — or, perhaps, allow Stephen Jackson to once again mimick Paul Pressey in the point forward role — rather than place Monta Ellis out of his element.

We dont typically play with a "point guard" in crunch time

Blake often lines up on the wing and Brandon takes it up top for the iso….in this set, blake hits nice 3s. However Bayless is able to create his own shot, and thus i think offering us a better option. Of course that IS if he plays like he did tonight.

Bayless shot 11. Roy shot 16.

That’s a very, very good thing, when you can stick two guards out there together with that kind of ability to get to the line.

But…

LMA…. shot…. NONE. Not a single foul shot for the starting PF. He played 11 more minutes than Bayless, and shot 11 less free throws. He did have six rebounds to Bayless’s three, so well done, Lamarcus.

Lamarcus is allergic to getting fouled. He would rather throw up a double pump over the shoulder reverse than get fouled.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Jan 15, 2009 7:25 PM PST reply actions

LMA is more of a 10-12 shots per game guy than 15-18

He’s just not efficient. I don’t mind him taking them right now because who else is going to take those shots.

Hoping Oden will start to get more shots.

Jerryd Bayless gets credit for one thing, with that being how he's drawing a foul on over 20% of his ...

field-goal attempts. Hilariously, though, LaMarcus Aldridge’s rate isn’t even half that, which is a total joke.

by AK1984 on Jan 15, 2009 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

this was one of his softest games

He was being guarded by Ryan Anderson. RYAN ANDERSON. Anderson is a very fine player— good shooter, not a bad defender. However, LaMarcus should be able to OWN him.

LMA had a key block and a couple huge jumpers— but if he’d been aggressive all game, we may not have needed Rex to bail us out.

Martell Webster might be fine for a weakside cornerman, although there must be more ...

versatility on offense from the team’s high-post player. At power forward, a guy can’t just settle on inefficiently launching mid-range jumpers nearly every time he shoots the ball. Thus, until the time in which LaMarcus Aldridge either improves his dribble-drive move from the elbow or greatly enhances his back to the basket repertoire, he’ll be fairly one-dimensional on offense.

by AK1984 on Jan 15, 2009 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

But LaMarcus keeps the driving lanes open

LaMarcus’s defender has to come out with him. We’re getting more rebounds that way and any penetration is incredibly effective.

by boppitywop on Jan 15, 2009 8:13 PM PST up reply actions

YES, YES, YES!

Why was the lane open for Brandon and Jerryd to drive and draw fouls? Because LMA was keeping it open by sticking enough jumpers that he had to be defended.

He needs to learn to drive, too, but the ability to draw his man away from the basket is invaluable to this team.

I know you can put admiration in bags, because admiration is real, and tominhawaii says that everything that is real is measurable.

by jscot on Jan 15, 2009 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

certainly, i personally wish LMA would watch a lot of tape of Chris Bosh, maybe even train with him in the summer

they have the dallas connection, so that he can put the ball on the floor like Bosh does. I have never called Lamarcus’ game perfect or even great, I just still think he can be a competent 2nd; call it optimism.

you have to use TS% not FG% to evaluate scoring efficiency

LMA is at .514, Travis is at .526. This paints an even worse picture for LMA than I expected. LMA’s inability to the foul line just cripples his chances of being an efficient #1 or even #2 scorer.

by Sabonis4Ever on Jan 15, 2009 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

in all honestly

Bayless is a way better dunker than Rudy. If the NBA wants to push one of them for the dunk vote, it should have been Jerryd. But he wasn’t playing, so they didn’t (though neither is Alexander, is he?)

I’d say Rudy is overrated as a dunker quite a bit, so if I was making my Blazer list, It would be Bayless, TO, and Martel. wouldn’t mind seeing that contest hashed out. Batum maybe could surprise – he is long and lanky and smooth. Roy could probably do some stuff in that setting. Big guys just never look impressive dunking to me – yeah, powerful and all, but it just doesn’t appeal to they eye like watching a high flyer. Don’t get me started on Howard’s joke of a win last year – all gimmick. He didn’t even dunk on that superman one, and got high marks. Stupid.

I like the trade

but probably not going to happen just because they’ll most likely be looking for a guard who can play off the ball more, which Sergio is by far our worst back court player at. I see their order of preference being Bayless, Rudy, Batum, Blake as a complementary piece (Batum would obviously slide down to the 2).

by Royster on Jan 15, 2009 9:21 PM PST up reply actions

I love Bayless

But if KP can get Hinrich and Deng for Outlaw, Sergio and RLEC he should go ahead and pull the trigger (the salaries match, and the Bulls are looking to dump contracts)

Then maybe Blake goes bye-bye sooner than expected?

Championship-ready backcourt “rotation” of Hinrich-Roy-Bayless-Rudy?

by two4larue on Jan 15, 2009 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

Should've pulled the trigger already...

Those guys are starting to play really well. I watched that Cleveland game. Hinrich was the best player on the court much of the time. He guarded Lebron a lot of times and did a GREAT job. He completely iced everyone else he guarded.

I would love a trade for Hinrich. Hinrich plus Deng would be crazy but I don’t think you’re getting Deng without including somebody like Rudy. With the way Hinrich’s playing, he’s going to demand some talent, too. RLEC plus Sergio isn’t getting it done.

I wasn’t being sarcastic. I don’t have a dunk scale but it was just better than that put back dunk by Vince Carter the other day. Bayless just jumped, avoided contact, and dunked. It didn’t change momentum, it wasn’t the game changer, it wasn’t in anyone’s face… It was just a dunk. I’m glad as heck we’ll have a point guard who can dunk, but it was only a B dunk for me.

I dunno

I thought it was purty sweet. It was cathartic for lil’ Bayless. The height, the power, the timing (I felt it changed momentum a bit, even though it was already in our favor), it embodied the lil’ breakout game he was having. The dunk summed the night up for him. RELEASE.

I’m sure over the years, it won’t be the best dunk of Bayless career, but it’s a nice start.

I was impressed with that no-step flat footed standing dunk he easily did against Detroit, I think it was. That is a lot harder than a running dunk.

You’re just mad because Bayless’ skin is smoother than yours.
